Your Fortnightly News Update

Last Thursday August 10, 2017 staff stayed over at Paratehoata Te Kohea Marae. We were all welcomed onto the marae as a group from Kaitao Intermediate and because there were new teachers to the school whom hadn’t been onto the Marae before. That evening, we discussed the importance of a person’s name with each staff member explaining the background of how, when, why they were named and the importance of knowing how to pronounce students’ names correctly

The following day (Friday) most staff participated in the Noho Marae experience. We spent considerable time listening to Ben Manly who now works for the Rotorua Lakes Council. Ben is hugely knowledgeable in Te Arawa history and gave an in-depth account of Rotorua’s development in the last two centuries or more. Afterwards Bryce and Renee representing Ngati Whakaue and whom have both been involved in this now the second Noho Marae experience, led us on a Hikoi of Ngati Whakaue and Rotorua town areas of interest such as Te Kuiarau, Makawe and Pukeroa, landmarks to Maori.

In the afternoon, we worked in groups on what we had learnt and how we could bring our new experiences and new knowledge into the school’s culture and into the school’s curriculum.

We will continue to learn from these outstanding experiences and new learnings and design an action plan that progresses our commitment to all akonga and especially to Ngati Whakaue whose lands we live and work on.

We would like to thank the Board of Trustees for supporting this commitment to Ngati Whakaue and to our own learning by approving the Teacher Only Day which was required to undertake this strand of work.

Prospectus

The prospectus for those students in Year 6 from contributing schools or elsewhere is now available from the office. During this week I will be visiting, the contributing schools along with some of our school leaders, to explain what Kaitao Intermediate will offer students in 2018. For more information please see the enclosed Transition Programme. If you would like further information please contact our school office.

Now the Prospectus has been completed we will have the content added to our new webpage. This will hopefully go live by the end of next week. I am really sorry for the inconvenience but I know you will like it and will find it very useful.

Sports

Our Girl’s and Boy’s Sevens team played in the Sevens Competition on Tuesday. The Kaitao Girls beat Rotorua Intermediate in the final. The boys were placed fifth in the Boys’ section. Well done both teams.

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Whanau,

There is a real concern about the number of students arriving late to school each day. Being

on time ensures that we have the right information to start the day. There is nothing worse,

even as an adult, arriving late to a meeting and having to catch up. Even coming in part way

through a movie means we don't have all the information straight away. Help your children

to get to school on time each day to give them the best chance at learning all ay everyday.

I have the privilege of being in classrooms and watching our tamariki learn. These past few

weeks I have enjoyed being in the music room with students, watching them exploring

instruments and learning about the rhythm of music. Our new music teacher Leonie French

is making a real impact on students.

I also had the good fortune to relieve briefly in Wero and was please to be working with

students to develop their vocabulary for writing using verbs and adverbs.

Last week staff enjoyed noho marae at Te Parahoata. This was a fantastic team building

opportunity for Phil and I, as well as ensuring that teachers build their own personal

knowledge of Ngati Whakaue. Some of the work I was able to do alongside our providers

will see stronger connections with Ngati Whakaue histories and stories right across the

school and integrated across the curriculum.

Winter Tournament.

On Friday 4th of August I had the privilege to take 55 students to the Winter Tournament where they played in

the following sports Rugby 15 Boys, Boys Football and Y7 and Y8 girls netball. What a great day it was in

Tauranga. All teams play to the best of their ability and show great sportsmanship.

Badminton.

On Wednesday 2nd of August I took 20 students from Kaitao Intermediate to the CBOP Badminton Tournament.

All of the students who attended this tournament were brand new to the sport apart from having participated in

badminton sessions in class this year for P.E. The students did very well.

All winter sport fees for Hockey, Netball and Basketball need to be paid by the end of this week.

School uniforms are now available at the school

office. To try and reduce as much stock as possible

we have decided to reduce the price of some items.

A Change is Coming

Our School uniform is changing in 2018. All new Yr

7 students from next year will wear our new

uniform, with current Yr 7’s moving into Yr 8

remaining in the uniform we have now. As stock is

depleted new uniforms will then be available for Yr

8 students.

We are expecting to have a one year transition

period, so by 2019 all students will be in the new

uniform.

After School Parking It has come to our attention that there are issues with

our carpark, including: unsafe speed and parking, parents

using the staff carpark as a pick-up/drop-off zone and

availability of disability carparks.

On arrival Mr Palfrey identified that the staff carpark and

parent carpark needed to be separated at the end of the

day to ensure student safety. This has been done with

cones at the end of the school day. Our caretaker Matua

Brendon patrols this to ensure safety. We ask that you

respect the cones so that our buses can be loaded and

leave safely.

If you have a mobility card you are entitled to park in our

mobility carpark which are currently situated within the

staff carpark. We plan to have these remarked closer to

the office soon. Please let Matua Brendon know that you

require access with your mobility card, if needed.

Thank you for ensuring that our students are kept safe by

parking appropriately and being courteous to other

drivers.
