Introduction:
Green Audit can be defined as systematic identification, quantification, recording,
reporting and analysis of components of environmental diversity. The ‘Green
Audit’ aims to analyze environmental practices within and outside the college
campus, which will have an impact on the eco-friendly ambience. Through Green
Audit, one gets a direction as how to improve the condition of environment and
there are various factors that have determined the growth of carrying out Green
Audit.
Eco club has been formed to monitor the proper conservation and plantation in
the campus. As per the suggestions made by IQAC, Eco club is entrusted with the
responsibility to do green audit.
The college was established in 1965. Total area of the college is 4.11 acres of
which 10% is covered by herbs, shrubs and trees including valuable medicinal
plants. The Eco club Committee encourages to increase greenery in campus. Extra
efforts taken by the college to create environment consciousness among students
are the extensive plantation programs (Vanam-Manam) organized by NSS units
and Eco- Club of the college. Extension programmes are also organized to create
environmental awareness and conservation of biodiversity among the students and
public.
The purpose of the audit was to ensure that the practices followed in the campus
are in accordance with the Green Policy adopted by the institution.
The methodology include:
Plantation
The college undertakes various activities through N.S.S. and Eco- club like Clean
and Green, Vanam-Manam and Swachh Bharat Programs. The biodegradable
and non-biodegradable waste segregated by the college was utilized for
composting. To create eco-friendly awareness among the students college
arranges special programmes by inviting the eminent personalities, who in turn
train and educate public. Students are encouraged to participate in eco-friendly
activities by making them a part of the curriculum.
Rain water harvesting structures and utilization in the campus:
Rain water harvesting is installed to reduce the usage of well and bore waters
from tanks.
Staff and students are instructed not to waste water unnecessarily in order to
avoid situations like water scarcity and drought in the absence of rainy season.
The instruction is given to students through Public Address System about the
importance of water harvesting.
The run off rain water from the terrace of the college building is channelized to
the water harvest pits located in the campus.
All the runoff water is also channelized to the rain water harvest pit.
To facilitate the ground water recharge, all structures are provided.
Layers of bricks filled inside the recharge will ensure proper filtration of
harvesting water.
Waste Management:
The hazardous waste from chemistry lab is disposed.
Waste chemicals, oils and cleaning materials are expelled.
Semi micro analysis is done to minimize the wastage of chemicals.
Plastic awareness programmes are conducted.
The acid batteries and electronic instruments are disposed periodically from the
lab.
Dustbins are provided in all class rooms for maintaining cleanliness effectively.
Napkin disposal machines are installed inside the campus to dispose the
napkins in a hygienic way.
Canteen wastage and dry leaves of plants are vermicomposted.
Computer science department disposes the unused computers and related
accessories periodically.
Ups batteries are recharged and repaired.
Unused Ups are exchanged by the suppliers.
The electronic instruments in poor working conditions are exchanged by
dealers.
Rain water harvesting and RO water plants are installed in the college and hostel
campus.
Green landscaping with trees and plants:
The college organizes various programmes to create awareness among students
in the campus and involve them in maintaining eco-friendly environment.
Medicinal plants and herbal garden are maintained.
Plan to develop a centre for environmental management in the campus.
Organizing Clean and Green Programs.

Overall Report
Conclusion:
Considering the fact that the institution is predominantly an undergraduate college, there is
significant environmental research both by faculty and students. The environmental
awareness initiatives are substantial. The installation of solar panels, paperless work system
and vermicomposting practices are noteworthy. Besides, environmental awareness
programmes initiated by the administration shows how the campus is going green. Few
recommendations are added to curb the menace of waste management using eco-friendly
and scientific techniques. This may lead to the prosperous future in context of Green
Campus & thus sustainable environment and community development.
