This is a double issue for July and August as things aren’t quite so busy. But your new Board met during June and new plans are being made for the upcoming year. We will be dropping the Diners Group and Happy Hour unless we get someone to come forward and chair these groups.

Also, we will have several one-time "Potpourri" events, including an antique trip in August. Look for an email with details in August. Happy summer everyone, Marge Davies

July For July 22nd, Nancy Draayer has scheduled a field trip to Lakecliff Gardens in St. Joseph. These beautiful gardens are located on a cliff overlooking Lake Michigan combining art with unusual plants. We will meet at 9:45 at the Oakland/I-94 Park N Ride and leave at 10am. Keep in mind that there may be nowhere to park unfortunately, so this is a meeting spot. Carpooling is encouraged so we can make further arrangements after I receive your RSVPs. We will have lunch in St. Joe and tour the gardens at 1:00. I will email directions and other info closer to the date. RSVP to Nancy's email [email protected]. August On Wednesday, August 26 the group will gather at Lois Loeffler's home at 11:30 am for a potluck/planning meeting. Please RSVP to Lois at 372-0038 or [email protected]. No Diners Club or Happy Hour over the summer!

Very Special Antiques Potpourri Event Barb Perkovic – 375-9061

We need someone to take over Happy Hour

and/or Diners Club next year! As Marge

said earlier, if no one steps forward, they’ll

die off and we all enjoy them too much for

that! They’re easy ones to do and we don’t

need to have them every month. So think

about it!

Special Interest Groups

Book Nook meets the third Monday of each month at Kazoo Books located at 2413 Parkview, Kalamazoo, just west of Oakland Dr. Turn on Book Alley off Barnard Ave. for plenty of parking behind the store. Come join us for great discussions. New members are always welcome! The books for the summer are: July 20, 2015, The Smartest Kids in the World; and How They Got That Way by Amanda Ripley Discussion leader Jane Steimle In a handful of nations, virtually all children are learning to make complex arguments and solve problems never encountered before. They are learning to think, in other words, and to thrive in the modern economy. In a global quest to find answers for our own children, author and Time Magazine journalist Amanda Ripley follows three Americans embedded in these countries for one year. Kim, fifteen, raises $10,000 so she can move from Oklahoma to Finland. Eric, eighteen, exchanges a high-achieving Minnesota suburb for booming city in South Korea; and Tom, seventeen, leaves an historic Pennsylvania village for Poland. Through these young informants, Ripley meets battle-scarred reformers, sleep-deprived zombie students, and a teacher who earns $4 million a year. Their stories, along with groundbreaking research into learning in other cultures, reveal a pattern of startling transformation: none of these countries had many “smart” kids a few decades ago. Things had changed. Teaching had become more rigorous; parents had focused on things that mattered; and children had bought into the promise of education. August 17, 2015, The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin Discussion leader: Jane Vandrè Fikry is a bookseller with a small shop in a sleepy island resort town off the coast of Massachusetts. He’s a bit cantankerous, but with good reason: his wife, the “people person” of the relationship, has recently died and his prized possession, a rare copy of Tamerlane, has gone missing. Despite those losses, there’s one strange addition, a baby girl left on his doorstep with an explicit request for Fikry to take her in. Zevin’s novel offers the reality of both death and rebirth, held together by the spirit of the bookstore. It’s a romantic comedy, a spiritual journey, and if you include the chapter openings, a collection of short story criticisms as well. In short, it’s a celebration of books and the people who read them, write them, and sell them. September 21, 2015, All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Discussion leader: To be determined
