A SOLAR system with as many planets as our own has been dis-covered with the help of NASA’s Kepler space telescope and arti-fi cial intelligence, the U.S. space agency said Thursday.
“Our solar system now is tied for most number of planets around a single star,” NASA said in a statement.
However, none of the planets are expected to be hospitable to life. The eight-planet system — the largest known outside of ours — orbits a star called Kepler 90 about 2,545 light-years away.
“The Kepler-90 star system is
like a mini version of our solar system,” said Andrew Vander-burg, an astronomer at the Uni-versity of Texas at Austin.
“You have small planets inside and big planets outside, but everything is scrunched in much closer.” The newly identi-fi ed planet, Kepler-90i, is a rocky planet like Earth, but orbits its star once every 14.4 days, meaning a full year there is the same as two weeks on Earth.
“About 30 percent larger than Earth, Kepler-90i is so close to its star that its average surface temperature is believed to exceed
427 degrees Celsius, on par with Mercury.”
Scientists found it by using machine learning from Google, which teaches a computer to scan a trove of 35,000 possible planetary signals collected from NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope in a search for signs of planetary transits. Transits are the dim-ming of light when planets pass in front of a star.
Humans would be far more suited to Kepler-90h, the out-ermost planet in the system that sits at a similar distance from the Sun as Earth. (SD-Agencies)

AN international design summit, themed “The Rebelution,” drew top designers
and educators from different areas, including industrial design, landscape design and community and city design, to Shenzhen F518 Idea Land in Bao’an District to share their innovative design ideas Dec. 9.
The summit invited seven speakers from China, Italy, Canada, the Philippines, the Netherlands, France and the U.K. to shed light on creative design, attracting nearly 200 participants.
The summit was hosted by Trey Hobbs, the founder of Shenzhen Stories, a live event that focuses on building an international community through the art of storytelling. Holding a BA and an MFA in theatre from The University of South Carolina, Hobbs has been involved in theatre pro-fessionally for the last decade, working with many compa-nies, such as Trustus, NiA and Theatre SC in South Carolina, and Theatre Unspeakable and
Black Ensemble Theatre in Chicago.
Now living in Shenzhen, Hobbs is an English voice actor for Fantawild Animation’s hit children’s properties “Boonie Bears” and “Boonie Cubs” as well as theatrical releases from the Boonie Bears franchise.
Ole Bouman, a former cre-ative director of the Urbanism/Architecture Bi-City Biennale Shenzhen (2013-14) who was appointed director of Design Society in January 2015, talked about his experiences fi nding creative ideas in Shenzhen.
Tosca Killoran, another speaker, shared her thoughts on the construction of creative space during the summit. She is the director of Level 5, an innovation hub in Shekou and also an Amazon best-selling author of children’s books. As a doctoral student, Killoran published research focusing on innovation in education.
Some other speakers, including Tommaso Masera, Michael Patte, Anthony Pantillas and Peng Huidong, shared their opinions on the quality, urban develop-ment, individualism, ani-
mation production and etc.The summit received a lot
of positive feedback from the participants and many showed their intention to visit the cre-ative design hubs. Some also want to work with the guests to develop further projects.
The summit was organized by the Edinburgh Shenzhen Creative Exchange (ESCE) under the Shenzhen Creative Investment Group. ESCE
consists of a Shenzhen Center and an Edinburgh Center. The Shenzhen Center is located at Shenzhen F518 Idea Land in Bao’an District.
Aside from the summit, an international design exhibi-tion named Good Innovation is ongoing at Shenzhen F518 Idea Land until Dec. 31. Dr. Priscilla Chueng-Nainby, an researcher from the University of Edin-burgh, and Treasure Hinds
from the Anvil Studios as the curators, along with Martijn ten Bhömer and Francesca Valsec-chi form a curation team.
The exhibition brings together innovative designs from the U.S., the U.K. and Europe and integrates products and services from outstanding designers to demonstrate the radical concepts of academic design researchers.
