akses utama kayu-kayu illegal.
pembalakan liar pada awal tahun 2000-an, pendapatan alternatif,
perubahan alam dan orangutan. Selain Lanjak, mereka
Danau Sentarum. Wartawan-wartawan lokal asal kota Pontianak
hadir pula berpartisipasi selama kunjungan.
Setelah Kapuas Hulu, rombongan melanjutkan perjalanan ke
Ketapang menuju PT Suka Jaya Makmur (SJM). Para wartawan
responsible for the purchase of imported products into
their country, coupled with the regulation of timber legality
for European Union countries. Therefore, looking through
Indonesia's natural conditions and how the products
derived from illegal activities generate social and
economic losses for the country is a series of experiences
and important infor-mation. Journalists got the
opportunity to visit Lanjak, the city that had become the
main access of timber smuggling port. They discuss with
local people about their life story on the heyday of illegal
logging and their lives now. Issues discuss during the trip
in Kapuas Hulu are associated with illegal logging in the
early 2000s, alternative income, changes in nature and
orangutans. Aside from Lanjak, they spend their time to
have a discussion with bee farmers and Malay
communities living within the Lake Sentarum National
Park. Local journalist from Pontianak was also present to
participate during the visit.

WWF bekerjasama dengan LEI menyelenggarakan training bagi
auditor di Surabaya pada tanggal 15 – 17 Juli 2010. Dalam tiga
hari workshop tersebut, para auditor mendapatkan penyegaran
mengenai pemahaman sertifikasi lacak balak (Chain of Custody),
alur proses tata usaha kayu beserta dokumen-dokumennya,
baseline appraisal. Para peserta diberi tugas membuat laporan
audit berdasarkan materi training dan kunjungan.
Auditor merupakan komponen penting dalam sistem sertifikasi
pengelolaan hutan lestari. Perkembangan sistem sertifikasi di
Indonesia yang selalu dinamis berimplikasi pada perlunya
penyegaran kembali para auditor agar tetap sesuai konteks. WWF
melalui program GFTN-Indonesia memfasilitasi jaringan pasar
produk-produk hutan. Oleh karena itu, training ini bertujuan
melatih tenaga-tenaga penilai lapangan agar sesuai dengan
standar kompetensi penilai lapangan untuk melakukan verifikasi
GFTN dalam skema pendampingan GFTN.
INDEPENDENSI AUDITOR KOMPONEN PENTING SISTEM SERTIFIKASI
WWF is working with LEI to organize training for auditors
in Surabaya on 15 to 17 July 2010. In the three-day
workshop, the auditors get a fresh understanding of chain
of custody certification (Chain of Custody), wood
administrative flow process and documents, the forestry
industry process for tracking the origin of timber and the
baseline appraisal. Participants were given the task of
making audit reports based on training materials and visit.
Auditor is an important component of sustainable forest
management certification system. The dynamic
development of certification system in Indonesia imply for
the need of refreshment for the auditors in order to stay in
context. WWF-Indonesia GFTN program facilitates market
network of forest products. Therefore, this training aims to
train experts on field assessor in accordance with the
standards of competence to verify GFTN in GFTN
mentoring scheme.
AUDITOR INDEPENDENCY AS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT FOR THE CERTIFICATION SYSTEM
hutan tanaman maupun IUPHHK restorasi ekosistem. Pelatihan
diadakan di Yogyakarta pada tanggal 20 – 23 Desember 2010.
Pengelolaan sumberdaya alam secara berkelanjutan adalah
pengelolaan yang mempertimbangkan aspek masa depan secara
lintas generasi sehingga selain mampu mewujudkan keberlanjutan
mendatang. Di masa lalu dialektika sosial budaya komunitas
sering terabaikan sebagai desain awal pengusahaan hutan
berbasis IUPHHK Hutan Alam dan IUPHHK Hutan Tanaman. Jika
diabaikan, timbulnya potensi konflik sosial, klaim tenurial dan
permasalahan sosial lain bisa mengancam keberlanjutan kegiatan
operasional perusahaan.
GFTN-Indonesia and Wana Aksara collaborated to conduct
Training for HCVF's Social Aspect Implementation and
Monitoring for forest managers and potential GFTN
members to improve competency, knowledge and skill in
implementing and evaluating HCVF context in natural
forests, plantations and ecosystem restoration. The
training held in Yogyakarta on December 20 – 23, 2010.
Sustainable natural resources management is a
management that put high attention on future's aspect and
cross generation so that the sustainability could create
sustainable ecosystem to answer social, economy and
community culture needs for present and future
generations. In the past, community's cultural and social
dialectic are often forgotten as the basis for forest
management. If those aspects are neglected, the social
conflict potential, tenurial claim and other social matters
could threat company's operational activities.

German societies were enthusiastic to hear the story of
Indonesia's forests. With the facilitation of WWF
Germany, four people set forth on the Forest Witness
Tour that held in three cities: Hamburg, Berlin and
Munich. This tour runs for a period of 25 to 30 October
2010. Joseph Unja, a local villager of West Kalimantan,
tells his story as a former illegal loggers and life after
illegal logging was abolished by the government in
2004. Nursamsu talked about the activities of pulp and
paper industry in Sumatra, the condition of forests in
Sumatra (Riau province in particular) and NGO efforts
in overcoming the problems related with pulp and
paper. Syahirsyah (Jimmy) tells his story as an
environmental activist for large - scale illegal logging
that occurred in West Kalimantan. While GFTN-
Indonesia was represented by Dita Ramadhani, who
talked about the efforts of sustainable forest
management in Indonesia.
Forest Witness Tour gives a new perspective for the
Germans in how they see Indonesia and how poor
forest management could influence many aspects such
as economic, social and cultural. This event was
attended by representatives from the goverment
agencies, NGOs, auditors, representatives of FSC
certification bodies, journalists and private companies.

BERBAGI CERITA KISAH
HUTAN INDONESIA DI JERMAN
Masyarakat Jerman antusias mendengar cerita kisah hutan
Indonesia.
berjalan selama periode tanggal 25 – 30 Oktober 2010. Yosep
Unja, satu masyarakat lokal dari Kalimantan Barat, bercerita

SIG Combibloc telah meluncurkan label
karton pertama China yang bersertifikat
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC),
mengangkat masalah-masalah kelestarian
di negara yang memiliki signifikansi
ekonomi kuat secara global ini.
Meresmikan komitmennya untuk
pembelian yang bertanggung jawab
dengan bergabung dalam GFTN-Jerman
akhir tahun lalu, salah satu pemasok
terkemuka sistem kemasan karton dan
filling machines untuk minuman dan
makanan ini melihatnya sebagai peran
unik yang dapat dimainkannya dalam
memajukan kehutanan yang bertanggung
jawab di pasar yang tengah berkembang
ini.
"Dengan perekonomian Cina yang
berkembang pesat, makin meningkat pula
pentingnya perlindungan lingkungan dan
iklim global," kata Karl Eagle, CEO SIG
Combibloc Asia-Pasifik. "Peluncuran
karton minuman yang menyandang label
FSC akan membuat konsumen dan
perusahaan lain dan industri-industri
lebih sadar mengenai asal kemasan.
Pengelolaan hutan yang bertanggung
jawab memainkan peran penting di sini ".
Kemasan karton dengan sumber yang
bertanggung jawab ini telah dimulai di
Shanghai World Expo pada bulan Mei,
saat tiga jenis kemasan minuman yogurt
milik Grup Inner Mongolia Yili yang
berlabel FSC, yang dikeluarkan oleh
bungkus karton combiblocMini dari SIG
Combibloc, dijual ke seluruh penjuru
Cina.
SIG COMBIBLOC MELUNCURKAN KEMASAN
KARTON PERTAMA YANG BERSERTIFIKAT FSC DI CINA
Peluncuran ini dibangun atas dasar yang
diletakkan pada tahun 2009 ketika SIG
Combibloc menjadi produsen pertama
dari kemasan karton yang menjelaskan
rantai sistem lacak balak (CoC) untuk
lokasi-lokasi produksinya di seluruh
dunia, sesuai dengan kriteria FSC. Setelah
pertama-tama membuat sertifikasi untuk
situs-situs produksinya di Eropa dan
kemudian mendapatkan sertifikasi CoC
untuk perusahaan-perusahaan
tanamannya di Cina, Thailand dan Arab
Saudi Desember lalu, perusahaan ini
sekarang dapat menawarkan kemasan
karton yang memiliki tanda pengelolaan
hutan yang bertanggung jawab kepada
pelanggan di seluruh dunia.
Kemasan karton SIG Combibloc
mengandung serat kayu sampai dengan
75 persen. Memastikan bahwa bahan baku
utamanya berasal dari hutan yang dikelola
secara bertanggung jawab adalah elemen
inti dari strategi perusahaan. Label FSC
pada kemasan karton minuman
memberikan jaminan bagi konsumen
bahwa semua serat kayu yang digunakan
dalam kemasan, dapat dilacak sepanjang
seluruh rantai penyediaan dari kemasan
karton berlabel hingga ke hutan asalnya.
"Kami memuji kemajuan SIG Combibloc
dalam memastikan penelusuran sumber-
sumber serat dari hutan yang dikelola
secara bertanggung jawab melalui
sertifikasi dari seluruh situs-situs
produksinya," kata Johannes Zahnen,
Manager GFTN-Jerman. "Komitmen untuk
bertanggung jawab terhadap sumber-
sumbernya ini adalah kunci untuk
memastikan masa depan hutan-hutan
dunia yang berharga namun terancam.

FIRST FSC-CERTIFIED CARTON PACKS
SIG Combibloc has launched China's
first Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC)-labelled cartons, raising the
profile of sustainability issues in this
powerful and globally significant
economy. Formalizing its
commitment to responsible
purchasing by joining GFTN-Germany
late last year, one of the leading
system suppliers of carton
packaging and filling machines for
beverages and food recognizes the
unique role it can play in advancing
responsible forestry in this emerging
market.
"With China's fast-growing economy,
its importance in respect to global
environmental and climate
protection also rises," said Karl
Eagle, CEO of SIG Combibloc Asia-
its European production sites and
then achieving CoC certification for
the company's plants in China,

December, the company can now
offer carton packs that bear the
mark of responsible forest

throughout the world.
SIG Combibloc's carton packs are
composed of up to 75 per cent of
wood fibre. Ensuring that this
principal raw material originates
from responsibly managed forests is
a core element of the company's
corporate strategy. The FSC label
on the beverage cartons provides
assurance to consumers that all
of the wood fibres used in the
packaging, are traceable along the
entire supply chain-from the labelled
carton pack all the way back to the
forest of origin.
"We commend SIG Combibloc's
progress in ensuring the
traceability of fibre sources from
responsibly managed forests

(AS) menjalin hubungan baik melalui perdagangan kayu. Namun
pelanggaran hukum. Undang - Undang Lacey (Lacey Act) yang
dikeluarkan pemerintah AS menjadi sebuah respon terhadap
illegal logging dan isu - isu perdagangan satwa dan tumbuhan liar
yang terjadi di negara lain. Sebagai konsumen kayu terbesar di
dunia AS merasa bertanggungjawab terhadap isu kritis ini.
Lacey Act

logging, illegal timber and illegal timber products become
a threat to the life depended on forests. Therefore, a
healthy forest industry plays an important role in this case.
For many years, Indonesia and the United States (US)
establish good relations through the timber trade. But the
legality of timber products that enter the United States is
vulnerable to violations of the law. The Lacey Law (Lacey
Act) issued by the U.S. government become a response to
illegal logging and the illegal trade in wild animals and
plants that occur in other countries. As the largest wood
consumer in the world, US feel responsible for this critical
issue.

On 22 May 2008, the United States Congress passed a
new law that prohibits trade in plants and plant

ilegal masuk ke Amerika Serikat (AS). Perusahaan-perusahaan
products derived from illegal sources - including log and
wood products. This new arrangement is the result of
amendments to the provisions of 100-year-old law. While
the Lacey Act has long been one of the most powerful
tools for a variety of U.S. institutions in the enforcement
of crimes against wildlife, it's potential to combat
illegal logging just being excavated recently. Lacey Act is
now a precedent (the first model) in global trade for plants
and plant products, which recognizes and supports the
efforts of other countries in managing their own natural
resources and provide a strong incentive for company's
plant commodities to do the same.
Lacey Act is the first law among others similar regulations
that prohibit the import, sale or trade of wood products
and illegally harvested wood to enter the United States
(US). The companies importing wood products to the
United States will require suppliers, such as mill and
manufacture from the Southeast Asia, to understand their
role in ensuring compliance with these regulations. Since
the declaration of new products under the Lacey Act
enacted in September 2010, many importer of wood
products located in the US will seek assurances from the
supplier of the products, that the product that they buy
have been produced legally. It means they have to
demonstrate the timber harvested, possessed, traded, sold
or exported without breaking the rules in the country of
origin where the tree grow, although the wood is then
processed in another country.

REGULATION
LEGALITAS KAYU UNI EROPA
EUROPEAN UNION TIMBER LEGALITY
Governance and Trade-Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT-
VPA).
mencapai langkah maju - setelah melalui perundingan intensif
Iman Santoso, Direktur Jenderal Bina Usaha Kehutanan
Kementerian Kehutanan, Jum'at, 18 Februari 2011. "Perjanjian ini
sangat perlu bagi Indonesia karena akan memungkinkan eksportir
produk perkayuan Indonesia memperluas pasarnya di Uni Eropa.
Ini sangat penting, karena Uni Eropa baru-baru ini telah
mengeluarkan aturan Timber Regulation yang melarang
perdagangan kayu-kayu yang dipanen secara illegal di pasar Uni
Eropa mulai Maret 2013." Perdagangan produk perkayuan
Indonesia ke Uni Eropa bernilai sekitar 1 milyar USD per-tahun.
Dalam rangka menanggulangi pembalakan liar, mendorong
perdagangan kayu-kayu legal dan memenuhi tuntutan pasar, sejak
Indonesia is expected to become the first Asian country to
conclude a legal timber trade agreement with the
European Union, through a Forest Law Enforcement,
Governance and Trade-Voluntary Partnership Agreement
(FLEGT-VPA). Indonesian and EU negotiators took a big
step forward when - following 2 days of intensive talks in
Jakarta - they agreed to conclude the agreement within the
next 2-3 months. When a FLEGT-VPA is in full
implementation, there will be a credible trade instrument
that allows only legally verified timber and timber products
from partner countries to be supplied to the EU market.
"We're nearly there" said Indonesian Ministry of Forestry
Director General Iman Santoso on Wednesday, February
23rd, 2011. "This agreement is crucial for Indonesia as it
enables Indonesian timber exporters to expand their
market for timber and timber products in the European
Union. This is especially important because the EU has
just enacted a Timber Regulation which prohibits the sale
of illegally harvested timber on the EU market by March
2013." The value of Indonesia's timber trade with the EU
stands at an estimated USD 1 billion per year.
Since September 2009 Indonesia has been rolling out a
timber legality assurance system designed to tackle illegal
logging and to meet new market demands. Already in
September 2009 Indonesia telah mengimplementasikan sistem
verifikasi legalitas kayu.
Eropa. Produk-produk perkayuan Indonesia yang bernilai tinggi
seperti mebel, bahan-bahan bangunan dan pulp & kertas
memberikan sumbangan besar bagi pembangunan ekonomi baik
2008 the USA amended the Lacey Act requiring US
importers to make sure their timber imports are legal. The
new EU Timber Regulation also seeks to ensure imports of
legal timber only. When the trade agreement with
Indonesia is fully operational, Indonesian timber will be
verified legal and therefore have an advantageous position
on the EU market.
Julian Wilson, EU Ambassador to Indonesia, welcomed
this development saying "This is a big step forward for
trade relations between Indonesia and the EU. This
agreement demonstrates Indonesia and the EU's
commitment to address the problem of illegal logging and
associated trade. It will be the first of its kind in Asia, and
it will enhance Indonesia's reputation both in the timber
market and in the climate change community. The next
step will be the implementation of the Agreement. For
Indonesia this means reducing illegal timber production.
For the EU this means assuring it will only import legal

Pemerintah Indonesia dan Norwegia
menandatangani kerjasama konservasi
kehutanan untuk mengurangi emisi
karbon senilai 1 miliar dolar AS, sebagai
bagian dari komitmen bersama untuk
mengatasi perubahan iklim.
Penandatangan kesepakatan yang
berbentuk Letter of Intent (LoI) REDD+
pengurangan emisi dari deforestasi dan
degradasi hutan itu dilakukan oleh
Menteri Luar Negeri Marty Natalegawa
dan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup dan
Pembangunan Internasional Norwegia Erik
Solheim di Government Guest House,
Oslo, Rabu, 26 Mei 2010, sore waktu
setempat.
"Indonesia akan melaksanakan kewajiban
kami, apa yang ada di LoI karena
Indonesia sangat berkepentingan untuk
menyelamatkan hutan kami, lingkungan
kami, untuk rakyat kami dan untuk masa
depan kami," kata Presiden Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono yang menyaksikan
penandatanganan itu. Oleh karena itulah,
menurut Presiden, Indonesia telah
menetapkan pengurangan emisi 26 persen
sebelum tahun 2020, semata-mata untuk
kepentingan bangsa kami dan juga untuk
manusia sejagad yang ada di bumi ini. Ia
menegaskan, bahwa komitmen Indonesia
untuk menyelamatkan lingkungan sangat
kuat. Sehingga sekalipun tanpa bantuan
luar negeri Indonesia, tetap akan
memenuhi target ambisiusnya untuk
mengurangi emisi karbon sebesar 26
persen pada 2020.
Namun, bantuan negara-negara maju
dapat membuat upaya tersebut lebih
efektif, apalagi semua pihak akan
mendapat manfaat yang sama jika hutan
hujan tropis Indonesia lestari. Menurut
LETTER OF INTENT (LOI) REDD+ ANTARA INDONESIA DAN NORWEGIA
Presiden berdasarkan LoI itu, maka
pemerintah Norwegia akan memberikan
bantuan 1 miliar dolar AS jika Pemerintah
Indonesia mampu memenuhi tiga tahap
yang tercantum dalam LoI itu dengan
sesuai.
Tahap pertama adalah proses persiapan
atau pembangunan kapasitas yang antara
lain dilakukan melalui pembentukan
lembaga yang memiliki kewenangan
dalam pelaksanaan program tersebut.
Tahap kedua adalah penerapan atau
proyek percontohan.
Menurut Perdana Menteri Norwegia, Jens
Stoltenberg pada tahap kedua itu kedua
pemerintah akan menyetujui sebuah lokasi
untuk proyek percontohan. Sedangkan
yang ketiga, kata Stoltenberg adalah
penerapan secara menyeluruh atau
nasional. Pada tahap ketiga itu, akan
REGULATION
berlaku prinsip pembayaran atas dasar
performa atau hasil atau dengan kata lain
bantuan tersebut akan diberikan jika
Indonesia benar-benar terbukti mampu
mencegah deforestasi dan degradasi
hutan. "Pada awalnya, kita membantu
untuk pembangunan kapasitas tapi
kemudian kita membayar berdasarkan
hasil," katanya.
Pemerintah Norwegia telah melakukan
metode yang serupa di Brazil. "Kontribusi
ini akan didasarkan pada pengurangan
penebangan hutan. Oleh karena itu,
menurut saya monitoring dan verifikasi
adalah kunci untuk memastikan bahwa
benar-benar terjadi kemajuan dalam
mengurangi penebangan hutan," ujarnya.

Government of Indonesia and

President, based on the LoI, the
Norwegian government will grant US
$ 1 billion if the government of
Indonesia is able to meet the three
stages of the LoI stated in it
accordingly.
The first stage is preparation or
capacity building, among others,
done through the establishment of
institutions that have authority in the
implementation of the program. The
second stage is the implementation
or pilot projects. According to the
Prime Minister of Norway, Jens
Stoltenberg, at the second stages the
two governments will approve a
location for a pilot project. The third
stage is the application of overall
implementation on the national level.
In the third phase, it will apply the
principle of payment on the basis of
performance or results if Indonesia
really proven to prevent deforestation
and forest degradation. "Initially, we
helped to build the capacity but then
we pay based on the results," he said.
The Norwegian government has
made a similar method in Brazil.
"This contribution will be based on
the reduction of deforestation.
Therefore, in my opinion the key is
monitoring and verification, to ensure
that true progress in reducing
deforestation," he said.

WWF CAMPAIGN
The year 2010 is a crucial year for tiger conservation.
Besides declared as the year of Biological Diversity by the
UN, 2010 is also the year of the tiger in the Chinese
calendar which is massively celebrated every year. To that
regard WWF sees 2010 as the year of tiger conservation,
in which some important activities will be conducted this
year aimed at doubling the number of the world's tiger
population by 2020, or in the next year of tiger in Chinese
calendar.
WWF-Indonesia also took part in the 2010's tiger
conservation campaign. Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris
sumatrae) is the last tiger sub-species that live in
Indonesia. Two other sub-species, namely Java tiger
(Panthera tigris javanica) and the Bali tiger (Panthera tigris
balica) has been extinct in the mid-20th century. The
number of Sumatran tigers is currently less than 400
individuals in the wild and the population is scattered in
lowland forests and peat lands from Aceh to Lampung.
With that population number, Indonesia has 12% of the
world's tiger population, which are 3.200 individuals.

gambut dari Aceh sampai Lampung. Dengan jumlah populasi
tersebut, Indonesia mempunyai 12% dari jumlah populasi
harimau dunia yaitu 3,200 individu.
harimau sumatera. Pada tahun 2010, unit patroli harimau WWF-
Indonesia bersama Balai Taman Nasional menemukan dan menyita
79 jerat harimau berupa sling dan nilon. Pada akhir kampanye
Tahun Harimau 2010, WWF-Indonesia mengadakan lokalatih
berbasis ekosistem.

Since 2004, WWF-Indonesia has started research in the
area of tiger habitat and working with government and
local communities to reduce poaching, illegal trade and
human-tiger conflicts, especially in the Tesso Nilo and
Rimbang Baling, the important habitat for Sumatran tigers.
In 2010, tiger patrol units together with WWF-Indonesia's
and National Park Authority discovered and seized 79 tiger
snares of slings and nylon. At the end of the 2010 Year of
the Tiger campaign, WWF-Indonesia together with
Director General KKH of the Ministry of Forestry held
training about fighting illegal trade in wildlife in Riau
Province which was attended by 47 participants, mostly
law enforcement officers.
In addition, WWF-Indonesia is also working with
communities in reducing the impact of illegal logging and
monitoring of forest crime, working with the company for
better management of plantations, as well as working with
governments to plan and implement ecosystem-based
spatial planning.
In 2008, 10 Governors from Sumatra and four Ministries :
Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Environment, Ministry
of Forestry and the Ministry of Public Works announced
their commitment to save Sumatra's remaining forests
and begin to design Sumatran ecosystem-based spatial.
This commitment is resembled to a document of
Ecosystem-Based Spatial Rescue Road Map, which was
launched in 2010. This Road Map deliver the RIMBA area
of integrated ecosystem (an abbreviation of Riau, Jambi
and West Sumatra), which covers 19 districts in the
province of Riau, Jambi and West Sumatra. RIMBA
Integrated Ecosystem Wilderness Area covers lowland
forest areas and high in 19 provinces including
three important landscapes of Sumatran

is hoped that all parties will improve the protection of
the Sumatran tiger habitats so that populations of
Sumatran tigers can grow and meet the target amount
to double by the year 2020.
In addition to campaigning on local government and
community level, WWF-Indonesia also conducts public
awareness campaigns and fundraising for the Sumatran
tiger. During the year 2010, as many as 1.769 people
have donated through the Friends of Tiger, a one-time
donation activity released by WWF-Indonesia in the
early campaign Year of the Tiger 2010. In addition,
various activities such as WWF-Indonesia Panda
Mobile, photo exhibitions, visits the school has
collected more than 230 thousand people; WWF-
Indonesia online campaign through social media like
Facebook, Twitter and website on the Year of the Tiger
2010 also has embraced more than 430 thousand
visitors.
Tiger is one indicator species for a healthy forest. Year
of the Tiger 2010 has ended, but the works relating to
the conservation of tigers continue to be supported in
2011 which also declared as the Year of Forests by the
United Nations. In closing this Year of the Tiger, WWF-
Indonesia will continue to multiply their efforts and
ensure that this charismatic species will continue to
survive until the next generation.
Pada tahun 2008, 10 Gubernur se-Sumatera dan empat
Kementerian yaitu Kementerian Dalam Negeri, Kementerian
merancang tata ruang Sumatera berbasis ekosistem. Komitmen ini
diturunkan menjadi sebuah dokumen Peta Jalan Penyelamatan
Kawasan
ini menjadi kawasan model demonstrasi praktek perencanaan tata
ruang berbasis ekosistem. Dengan penataan ruang berbasis
ekosistem tersebut, diharapkan seluruh pihak dapat meningkatkan
perlindungan habitat harimau sumatera sehingga populasi
Sepanjang tahun
2010, sebanyak 1,769 orang telah menyumbang melalui Sahabat
Harimau, sebuah kegiatan donasi satu kali (one time donation)
bertahan hingga generasi selanjutnya.

Why We Need the GFTN and How it Works
Every year, more than 30 million acres of natural forest are destroyed to meet the
growing global demand for wood and agricultural products.
The Global Forest & Trade Network (GFTN) recognizes that an effective response to
such devastation is to turn the global marketplace into a positive force to save the
world’s most valuable and threatened forests. Increasingly, consumers want to know
where their wood comes from and to be assured that today’s forests will be here
tomorrow for their children and grandchildren.
The GFTN—a WWF-led partnership—links more than 360 companies, communities,
NGOs, and entrepreneurs in more than 30 countries around the world. The goal is to
create a new market for environmentally responsible forest products. Since 1991,
market-driven demands from GFTN participants have increased the economic
incentives for responsible forest management. This is helping to ensure that millions of
acres of forests are independently and credibly certified, a guarantee that the forests are
well managed and that their products come from legal and sustainable timber harvests.
But despite this solid progress, reliable supplies of credibly certified “good wood” are
still limited. And trade in wood and pulp from illegal or controversial sources is
continuing.
A growing number of forest owners and managers, manufacturers of wood and paper
products, retailers, distributors, and investors support sustainable forest management.
But there are complex obstacles to achieving this goal. A major problem is uncertainty
about how to achieve “good wood” certification and benefit from it.
The GFTN exists to support and facilitate greater coordination of national and regional
efforts to expand responsible and credibly certified forest management, including
technical assistance throughout the certification process and enhanced marketing
opportunities.
GFTN participants are committed to increasing the availability of forest products from
well managed forests, helping each other benefit and profit from sustainable forest
management, and ending the purchase of forest products from illegal and controversial
sources. This is the GFTN mandate.
