Muharram is the 1st month of the Islamic calendar. It is regarded as one of the sacred months [Ash'hurul-Hurum ]. It was forbidden to wage war or fight during this month. Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) has said that the best of fasts besides the month of Ramadan is fasting during the month of Muharram (Muslim ).

Ashura is (the name of) the 10th day of Muharram and is a day of great significance and virtue. However, it is a Sunnah to fast on both the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th of Muharram. It is Makruh (reprehensible) to fast only on the 10th of Muharram (to differ from the practices of the Jews). Those who will fast on the day of Ashura, will have their (minor) sins compensated for the past one year (Muslim ).

Safar is the 2nd month of the Islamic calendar. Some people have erroneous beliefs regarding this month that it is full of misfortune and calamities, e.g. a Nikah (marriage) performed in this month would not be successful. This is incorrect, as Allah says in the Qur'an: "No kind of calamity can occur, except by the will of Allah " (Qur'an 64: 11). He also says: "Whatever misfortune befalls you, it is due to the things your hands have earned, and He forgives many a sin. " (Qur'an 42: 30).

Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) has said that, the descending of illness and evil superstition befalling in the month of Safar is untrue (Muslim ). These types of incorrect beliefs come from the pre-Islamic period of Jahiliyyah [Days of Ignorance].

Rabi' Al-Awwal is the 3rd month of the Islamic Calendar. Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa salam ) was born on 12th of this month. He migrated from Makkah to Madinah (known as the Hijrah ) in this month and departed from this world 63 year later (i.e. on Monday, 12th Rabi’ Al-Awwal 11 AH). Some Muslims celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) in this month (Mawlid-un-Nabi ). There are no authentic evidences from the Seerah or the Sahabah (companions) of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) for doing this practice. Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) is reported to have said not to unduly praise him like the Christians exaggerated over Isa (alayhis salam ), son of Mariam (Bukhari ). However, if it is unavoidable, it should be done without fixing the same date in all occasions (as practised by the Christians).

Rabi’ Al-Thani (or Rabi’ Al-Akhir) is the 4th month of the Islamic calendar. No specific (lunar monthly) Ibadat or duty has been prescribed by the Shari'ah (Islamic Law) during this month. However, one should try to fast on the 13th, 14th and 15th of every month since this was the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ). These are known as the fasts of Ayam-e-Bidh , which are the middle days of every lunar month. It was also a practice of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) to fast on Mondays and Thursdays of every week.

RAJAB 1431 AH

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Rajab is the 7th month of the Islamic Calendar. In this month the Isra' and Mi'raj of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) took place (i.e. the miraculous night journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and then up through the seven heavens into the direct presence of Allah). This event took place on 27th Rajab, about 1 year before Hijrah. Salah is the greatest pillar of Islam (after Iman) and was made obligatory on Muslims in the night of Mi'raj. All other pillars of Islam were made obligatory in Madinah (after Hijrah) via Archangel Jibrail (alayhis salam ). There is no evidence to support that fasting of this day is Sunnah .Du’aa of Rajab: “Allahuma barik lana fiy Rajab wa Sha'ban wa ballighna ila Ramadan.” [O Allah bless us in the month of Rajab and Sha’ban and let us see the month of Ramadan.]

SHA'BAN 1432 AH

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Sha'ban is the 8th month of the Islamic Calendar, which comes between Rajab and Ramadan. Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) used to observe the fasts throughout the month of Sha'ban in preparation for Ramadan. The 'Qibla' (direction to face in Salaat) was changed to the Kabah in Makkah (after facing Bait-ul-Muqaddas in Jerusalem for a short time) in the middle of Sha'ban 2 AH. Performing optional Ibadah (such as optional Salaat and recitation of Qur’an) in the night of 15th Sha’ban (Laylatul Bara'ah) and fasting on that day has been reported to be very virtuous.

RAMADAN 1432 AH

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar. It is the month of obligatory fasting for all adult Muslims. The purpose of fasting is to develop piety, self-control and sympathy for the less privileged (poor) in the society (and around the world). The recitation of the Qur’an is highly emphasised in Ramadan, since the it was revealed in this month (Qur’an 2: 185). It is also Sunnah to perform Tarawih prayer in congregation at night and I’tekaaf (seclusion) during the last 10 days, seeking for Laila-tul-Qadar (night of power), which has a reward of 1000 months worship (Qur’an 97: 3). It is important to pay Sadaqa-tul-Fitr (charity) to the poor before the end of Ramadan so that they can rejoice the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr (festival of ending fasts). It is also important for all Muslims on whom Zakah (obligatory charity) is due, to pay it promptly within a lunar year, especially by the end of Ramadan.

SHAWWAL 1432 AH

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Shawwal is the 10th month of the Islamic Calendar. The first day of this month marks the end of Ramadan with the day of Eid-ul-Fitr (festival of ending fasts). It is the beginning of Ash’hurul Hajj (the months of Hajj are Shawwal, Dhul Qa'dah and the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah). Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) is reported to have said that whosoever has fasted the month of Ramadan and then keeps six further fasts (in any days after the day of Eid) in the month of Shawwal will get the reward of fasting the whole year (Muslim ).

DHUL QA'DAH 1432 AH

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Dhul Qa’dah is the 11th month of the Islamic Calendar. It is a month amongst the months of Hajj (pilgrimage) and the first among the four sacred months (Ash’hurul Hurum ). No specific (lunar monthly) Ibadat or duty has been prescribed by the Shari'ah (Islamic Law) during this month, except those who are performing Hajj are required to follow the Rules of Hajj while in the city of Makkah. Those who are not performing the Hajj should try to fast on the 13th, 14th and 15th of every month since this was the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa salam ). These are known as the fasts of Ayam-e-Bidh , which are the middle days of every lunar month. It was also a practice of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ) to fast on Mondays and Thursdays of every week.

DHUL HIJJAH 1432 AH

Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

Dhul Hijjah is the12th month of the Islamic Calendar (i.e. last month of the lunar year). It is obligatory for all adult Muslims to perform Hajj (pilgrimage) once in a lifetime, if they can afford the cost of the journey. The event takes place during 8th to 12th of the month in Makkah (Saudi Arabia). On the 9th day, the pilgrims will stand on the mount of Arafah for prayers, but all non-pilgrims are recommended to fast (according to their local lunar calendar), which will expiate the (minor) sins for two years (i.e. the past year and the future one). The 10th day is the day of Eid-ul-Adha (festival of sacrifice) for all non-pilgrims and it is forbidden to keep any fasts between 10th to 13th of the month. All adult Muslims are required to offer an animal to sacrifice (Qurbani ) on the day of Eid-ul-Adha (or within 3 days), if they have the means to do so.
