The island of Costa Erez is located in the commune of Trégastel, Brittany. It gets its name from mo-dern Breton as a place for drying, because fishermen used to dry their fish on the island in the sun. The pretty castle made of pink granite was built by Polish mathematician, inventor and

engineer Bruno Abakanowicz in 1893. His Polish writer friend, Henryk Sienkiewicz, wrote the Nobel Prize winning novel “Quo Vadis”, which is also the name of a beach in Trégastel. A popular German comedian is the current island owner.

Litzlberg Castle, originally mean-ing “little castle”, can be found on a pretty island on the Attersee, the largest lake in the Salzkammergut area. The island’s buildings date back hundreds of years according to drawings, which show a stately annex from the 1700s, however the

new castle was built in the 1900s. Well-known Austrian painter Gustav Klimt was known to frequent the island during the summer, and the clear waters and steady winds have always attracted sailors and swimmers to the region. Today, established trees and

greenery conceal part of the castle, offering the owners, the Leitl family, natural privacy.

Boldt Castle was built in 1900 by George Boldt, a wealthy manager of illustrious hotels in New York and Philadelphia, along with four other buildings on Heart Island. Located in the Thousand Islands of the Saint Lawrence River, New York, tall trees and grassy lawns surround the hill-top castle, which is a major land-mark and tourist attraction. In 1977,

the island and castle were acquired by the Thousand Island Bridge Authority for one dollar on the proviso that all revenues obtained from the castle‘s operation would be used to restore and preserve the island for generations to come. Heart Island can be reached by ferry from Alexandria Bay, NY and other points in ontario.

Castle Stalker is one of the best-preserved medieval tower-houses in western Scotland. It is located on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe, about 1.5 miles north-east of Port Appin. Built around 1540 by Duncan Stewart of Appin, this much-photographed castle was

gifted by him to James IV for use as a hunting lodge. In fact, its Gaelic name, Caisteal Stalcair, translates literally as „Castle of the Hunter“. Castle Stalker remains in private ownership and is open to the public at selected times during the summer months.

Mauensee Castle is located on an is-let at the lakeshore of the Mauensee Lake in the south west of Sursee. This square-shaped structure stands on a terrace surrounded by support-ing walls and dominates the entire island. Back in the Middle Ages, this was the location of a fortified

defence structure, the remains of which can no longer be seen, as around 1605, the new building was constructed. Today, the castle, enhanced by the small baroque garden in front of the building, is privately owned by a Swiss family and is closed to the public.

Château de Chillon is a veritable archi-tectural jewel that has earned its place on chocolate wrappers and Swiss souvenirs, as well as being one of the country’s most visited historic monuments. Situated along the breathtakingly beautiful shores of Lake Geneva, the castle occupies the entire island, which can be reached across a short foot bridge. This magnificent building has

always inspired writers and artists, from Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo and Lord Byron, to Delacroix and Courbet. The earliest mention of the castle dates back to 1150, however it took centuries of building and renovations to get it as it stands today. Château de Chillon can also be booked for events, meetings and special occasions.

Though Mainau is synonymous with Flower Island and famous for its colorful displays of spring snow drops, wild summer roses and autumn dahlias to name a few, the Baroque splendor of the Castle of the Teutonic order, built between 1739 and 1746, is the island’s architectural focal point and a place for all occasions.

The castle and its gorgeous parks, flowers and gardens make an ideal setting for banquets, weddings and conferences. The island is noble owned by the Lennart-Bernadotte Foundati-on, created in 1974 and the five Bernadotte successors to Count Lennart, great grandson of Grand Duke Friedrich I and Lord of Mainau, continue his work.

Surrounded by mountains, pretty towns and lakeside villages, Lake Castle ort is built on an island on the Traunsee in the district of Gmunden. Founded around 1080, like most castles with such a long history, it passed through many hands, including a king and a duke. It was officially acquired by the city of Gmunden for the second and fi-nal time in 1995 and could be seen

in the TV series Schlosshotel orth, which ran from 1996 to 2004. Today one can walk across the 123 meter bridge to enjoy private celebrations, weddings, gala dinners, seminars, conferences, company events and performances in the beautiful rooms or regional specialties at the family-run restaurant.

Brecqhou Island was bought in 1993 by successful British busi-nessmen and brothers, Sir David and Sir Frederick Barclay. The identical twins, who own a number of publications including the Daily Telegraph, as well as London’s famous Ritz Hotel, which they bought in 1995, have often been

described as reclusive. Appreciating privacy and seclusion, they built a mock-Gothic castle on the pretty island of Brecqhou in the Channel Islands, which features granite walls, battlements, two swimming pools and a helicopter pad. The island has almost the size of Buckingham Palace.

This stately 13th century castle complex, including the Chapel of St. Joseph, is located on a scenic island in Lake Lauerz (Lauerzersee) and is steeped in history. The castle was renovated in the 1960s and some excavation work was also carried out. In october 1967, the

canton Schwyz acquired the island from the family Auf der Mauer, in whose possession it was from 1809. Today, the island can only be reached with the aid of a ferryman and his boat and still has a mysterious fascination surrounding it.

Singer Castle on Dark Island is lo-cated on the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands region - one of the most picturesque parts of North America. Situated at the border between the USA and Canada, the island’s historic landmark castle, which is open to the public for tours, was built towards the end of the 1800s by Frederick Bourne, Pre-sident of the Singer Manufacturing Company at that time. The castle,

which boasts an intricate network of secret passageways and underground tunnels, was recently used as the location for a brand new reality TV show called „The Great Escape“. Contestants were put in peculiar situations from which they had to escape as quickly as possible.
