December 2019

2019 was a quiet year … Written by Jan Dalm

We only launch a newsletter when something has to be announced, actually this is not easy for 2019, the project is going well without major issues, but it’s a good habit to bring out a newsletter at the end of each calendar year.

Without major issues ..?. Well, we have been attacked by an aggressive crowd of termites, who had chosen the Jamilo School as their goal in their desire for destruction. Some empathy towards animals destroying everything on their path was not present (not even with us) and they have been eradicated with pesticides that may not longer be allowed in Western society …. Furthermore, all fragile materials have been treated so that the termites will think a bit before they will start a next attack.

Shika Tamaa is a sponsorship plan

which enables orphans to enroll (or stay enrolled) in

school. New sponsors can give a child hope in a

better future for only €60,- per year.

You are supporting locals

who adopted these orphans into their homes and families. There are many people who take (related) children into their homes, but who

don’t have the supplies to pay for their education.

With your support we can help the foster families to pay the schoolfees and

keep the children in school.

Kindergarten leavers Every year we do mention the children who leaves class 3 (Nursery) from kindergarten and who will continue to primary school next year (Primary). We appreciate the amount of attention that is given to the so-called "Graduation Ceremony" dressed in "Academic uniforms". It must be an event that they will never forget.

Construction class 8 The construction of the 8th and final room is almost complete. The Kenyan school years are equal to the calendar years, and to guarantee the flow of students to the next class it is always necessary to start in December. The construction of the school has been made possible thanks to important financial support of the Cargo Network company. And of course thanks to the generous gifts from many people who feel closely involved to the Jamilo School. Thanks for that..!!!

Tablets As you probably know (from our facebook page), all the computers were stolen from the school at the beginning of this year and a lot of damage was made at the same time. However, the damages are repaired, additional reinforcements have been made and a safe has been purchased. From a primary school in July this year, we received eight second-hand, but still good working, tablets. After a test shipment of one tablet, to see if it will arrive, the remaining seven were sent. It was an exciting happening if these would arrive also, but we succeeded.

What about the maintenance….?…. The school is almost complete now, 3 classrooms for nursey, 8 classrooms for primary, there is a kitchen and there is a multifunctional room. The only thing that still needs some attention are additional toilets with a decent washroom. In the meantime, the first signals are heard regarding maintenance. The primary classes are built from a timber frame with corrugated iron, a common used method of construction in Kenyan terms, but no matter how sober, it needs maintenance. The maintenance signals now mainly sounded, are about the nursery building, the first building that was installed in 2010 and built entirely of stone. So there is work to do in the coming period.

News about and from Homa Hills Written by Dieuwer Blom and Ibo de Joode

As mentioned in earlier newsletters, the activities in Homa Hills are coming to an end. With the small buffer we still have, we will provide small financial support to Willis Oballa as the manager of the Orange House in Homa Hills. However, this support will decrease. But he will be still able to arrange a number of things from the Orange House. One of his duties is to complete the Adoption Plan in Homa Hills. This year only 6 children went to school, 1 of them went to Secondary Vocational Education. Next year there will be 3 or 4 left. At the beginning of this year a request came from another organization in the Netherlands, giving extra support to the Goats project. As a result of this, Gerald Omollo wrote a report at our request with the state of affairs and what was needed. Unfortunately, contacts about this later broke down this year. The project itself is going well, but from the women's groups there was a strong desire for expansion. However, this is not possible with our limited resources.

Shika Tamaa Even for Shika Tamaa the year went smoothly. The plan now includes 116 children/young people, 85 of them attend Primary Education. In the past year, 9 young people went to the University or College. One student graduated from this and we hope that she will find a job soon. Unfortunately it also happens that young people no longer report to Lilian because they have left to another area. If the place of residence is no longer traceable without any contact with Lilian, than we don’t to allow the child to participate in the sponsor plan anymore

anymore. Lilian demands information (in particular from the older youth themselves) about the school progress on a regular basis. Unfortunately, sometimes we receive sad messages, such as the death of a young mother of two sponsored children. These children are fully orphans now and we hope that the local residents will take care of these children. A small advantage is that these children have been sponsored for several years and that they can stay at their own school. As a foundation we have been busy again in the past weeks emailing the sponsors with the request to transfer the contribution for 2020. We have already received many donations, so for most children we are able to pay the coming school fees in January. Occasionally we also receive a request from Lilian to include new children in the sponsorship plan and we are currently looking for a sponsor for Rosemary Adhiambo, 12 years old. She goes to class 6 and wants to finish the 8 year of Primary school. Her sister has been sponsored for a few years, but due to increased costs, their mother is no longer able to continue to pay the full school fees for Rosemary. But together we can ensure that Rosemary can also finish primary school. Maybe (as a recipients of this newsletter) you can make someone enthusiastic about sponsoring this girl for €60 a year. A new sponsor can register via our website. We hope, with your help, to be able to mean a lot again in 2020 for these children in Kisumu, so that 2020 can be another great new year for many of them!

House moving At the end of January, the foundation postal address at the Chamber of Commerce will be changed to:

Hyacint 109, 2215CT te Voorhout. This has to do with the house moving of Jan Dalm and the secretary / treasurer Ineke Dalm-van Stam.

Happy days
