Firstly I would like to thank all the students from Kallangur for their participation in the First Round Tournament held at the Kallangur Community Centre. Your participation has helped the Kallangur Club pick up second place in the overall club points tally. Well Done! As most of you would know the Kallangur Club ran the Canteen on the day with proceeds raised from this and the Mother's Day raffle going towards the purchase of new equipment for the club. I’m expecting to have the equipment purchase finalised after the grading with some more training knives and focus mitts on the agenda. Thanks again to all the parents who helped out on the day, whether it be with tasty donations to sell or help in the kitchen, the success is due in part to your

It’s important that I mention at this time that the upcoming training camps (Black Belt and All rank) as well as Black Belt & All Rank training sessions are an absolute must for those looking at Black Belt and High grade promotions.

Favourite Kicks of All Time : #3

Reverse Turning Kick: Performed similar to spinning hook kick except with a straight leg. Some of the reasons Reverse Turning Kick is my 3rd favourite kick are—It can be executed from different angles, speeds and heights and can be targeted to different areas of the body (head and mid-section), and of course is a heel kick (which means it hurts your opponent more) Additionally it is one of, if not the most powerful kicks you can execute

support, and for that I can't thank you all enough. (Mel, Fiona, Rosemary, Linda, Desley, and Mum – I hope I didn’t forget anyone) So half the year has almost passed, and at astonishing speed. The Kallangur

club has a lot of higher grades at the moment pushing for promotions to Brown Belt, Black Belt and beyond, it's great to see the effort being applied in class, in particular some of the younger students who are rising to the challenge - keep up the good work everyone.

Eliot Wilson is currently training hard and balancing Uni commitments in preparation for a December 2nd Dan Promotion – this will be a big occasion for the club and myself, – Although not the first second Dan from Kallangur in recent times, Eliot was one of the first students to join the Kallangur club when I took it over from the Chief Instructor approx. 9 years ago.

Martial arts also teaches children respect. Instructors respect their students, junior belts respect senior belts & instructors, senior belts respect junior belts & instructors…….all around there is an atmosphere of mutual respect. Everyone feels valued for their contribution, as everyone has something different to offer. Because of this, the children tend to value people around them, which in turn helps them develop into respectful young adults. Martial arts also promotes gender equality, as in girls do the same exercises as boys. The ability to get on well with others of the opposite sex is an important part of life. Martial arts also gives children a

foundation to interact with the opposite sex. As there are both male & female students, training gives children a safe and comfortable place to interact with each other, when sometimes this isn’t always possible in the school ground. It teaches children that no one is invincible as they watch each other

win, and lose spars, and at times have to help each other up. These interactions can build a solid foundation for male-female relationships in the future, and can lead to more rounded teens. Some children struggle to make friends, or become accepted as part of a group. Martial arts gives children a good support group and sense of belonging. With martial arts, they have no choice but to interact with the other students, doing sparring, self-defense, and pad work together. Strong bonds and friendships form, as everyone is participating in common experiences, all with the same desired outcome. All students are there to support each other, and help each other achieve the common goal. Finally, as well as all of the positive effects already mentioned, is the fact that martial arts is a fantastic physical workout for children. Martial arts builds endurance, speed, strength, and stamina, which in turn keeps the child fit and in good physical shape. This helps the child have a positive personal image, and increases self confidence in all facets of their life.

We all want the best for our children, and we all worry about what the future holds for them. There is only so much we can control within their lives, and we can’t be there every moment of every day to protect them. We can, however, give them a great life skill, to help them throughout their everyday lives……..the knowledge of a martial art. There are many reasons why learning a martial art is important for a child, of which the most obvious reason is self-defense. Whether we’re watching the news, reading the paper, or browsing online, one thing is evident in today’s society…….it’s a violent world out there, and crime can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime. Not only do we constantly hear about “king hits” (more recently aptly re-named the “coward punch”), but there are many sexual predators out there who can scar a young person for life if they are subject to an attack. Having the knowledge of self-defense is an invaluable tool throughout life, and can give both the student, and the parent, a feeling of safety in the knowledge that they may have the skills to protect themselves. Another major issue children face as they grow into their pre-teen and teenage years, is bullying, and being compared to others, which in turn can cause low self-esteem and self-confidence. Within the martial art family, each student is valued for their own personality and skills. Students are promoted through their achievements by belt rank, and as each child climbs through the ranks, this can help improve self-esteem and self-confidence. As this self-esteem and self-confidence grows, it can make the child less vulnerable to bullying and peer attacks. Martial arts can help children to achieve balance in their lives, by offering a safe place to take out these frustrations and release negative emotions. Release is obtained by using kick shields or punching bags, or the child learns to control themselves with breathing techniques & self-discipline. Such exercise also increases endorphins, and puts the child in a more positive mood. For both boys and girls, friends will come and go as they grow, but the martial arts family is one that remains constant, giving them a sense of belonging. The road may not always be easy for them, but they are able to have the same goals to achieve as any other child. The sense of worth you see in the child’s face when they achieve the same as all the other children is priceless. As focus is an important part of martial arts, this can also help children in both the classroom and at home with homework, and make the child more goal-oriented and self-motivated to achieve well.

Don’t forget to use your powerful punches in your patterns too. Important: The candle activity should not be attempted at home unless you’re supervised by a responsible adult and you’ve taken all the necessary precautions. Placing your tea-light candle in a bowl or tray of water is an added safety consideration. Your hands should never touch the flame, so get your distance right!!! On behalf of the Bribie club, I wish you continued success and fulfilment in your training and IMT journey. See you on Bribie on the 19th of July.

Congratulations to our Bribie troupe who came home from the tournament, justifiably proud of their efforts and success. For two of our participants, Aidan and Tamara, it was their very first tournament and they did themselves proud, showing lots of courage and a growing confidence to step onto the floor and give it their best. I wish to commend Victoria who, with an outstanding attitude, continues to face up to taller or bigger opponents at each tournament. She never backs down. Go Victoria! That’s the spirit – the IMT spirit! Remember, it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog! Our club continues to train surrounded by a very supportive band of parents and to them, I extend my deepest gratitude. Next month sees Bribie host the next tournament. We look forward to welcoming you all to the island and to the Banksia Beach State School hall. Either check the location on Google Maps, await the directions from your instructor or on IMT’s Facebook page. We wish everyone attempting the upcoming grading all the very best for a successful display of the skills and techniques you have developed thus far. Regardless of whether it’s your very first grading or you’re attempting your black belt grading, it’s your special moment. Make sure it’s one to remember for all the right reasons. Needless to say, a lack of practice, particularly in your patterns, will be evident. It’s your responsibility to practise and refine your patterns and you will certainly reap the rewards of ongoing, committed practice.

The Power within the Punch Recently, our club has focused on developing a powerful punch and discussed the source of this power. Some people mistakenly think that it’s just from the shoulders, even just the fist, but a powerful punch draws from the joining of energy of both the mind and the entire body. It must be remembered though, that body is not tense in the lead up to the punch. The fist tenses at the moment of impact, with just the squeeze of the “pinky” finger only. Under strict conditions and with safety in mind, we set up candles (tealights) at training and from a prescribed distance, each student attempted to extinguish the candle, not from contact of course, but by the ‘wind’ created by the punch. Needless to say, mouths had to be closed due to the temptation to blow the candle out with their breath. It wasn’t as easy as they thought, but soon uniform sleeves were ‘snapping’ with the power and hips and feet engaged in the synchrony of movement and breathing. One should be exhaling from the depths of the diaphragm, even from the stomach, not from the upper region of the lungs. Wrists should be flat, and the first two knuckles the ones to make contact with the target. Next time you’re doing bag work, check which knuckles are red. If all knuckles are red, you’re punching hand is in the wrong position. Get advice from your instructor if you want to improve on this technique.

Ormeau Update

After a few questions at some of the recent training sessions from members I thought I would fill you all in on my back ground. As some of you know my club and I came over from another style in September last year. I started training with Michael Kelly when I was 14 and trained at his home (as a human punching bag). After a couple of years I started my formal training in Taekwondo under Peter back in 1994 when it was still the AFTA. I stayed on and trained with Peter until around 1996/7 at which point I started training with Michael and Brett Kelly (both had trained under Graham Johnson along with Peter at the ATI). I earned my Black Belt with the Kelly’s and in 2000 I suffered a knee injury in preparation for my attempt at 2nd Dan. This injury put me out of training for a year. I then returned to training in 2001 and earned my 2nd Dan at the start of 2002 under the Kelly’s. I then left training for a while and focused on Gym based training while wanting to join the ADF. In 2003 I re-joined IMT along with my daughter Leana when she was only 5 and we both started training. After an absence I started fresh with her and then stayed on and trained with IMT until 2006 when I then switched my focus to my army enlistment preparation. I joined the ADF and ended up moving to Townsville, In 2011 I decided to get out of the Army and get back into training in TKD, unfortunately the only style available in Townsville was an ITF based school where the politics ruled. In September 2011 I conducted an RPL

examination and was promoted to an ITF 2nd Dan. I stayed on and trained with this group and when I moved back to the Gold Coast opened the class…. And the rest is history. I will say that I love being back training with the IMT, being motivated by the best martial artists around. Our current students range in age from 6

through to 46 and we have a range of white belts through to brown belts. Our younger students, Devon, Amber, Alex, Mitchell, Jordan, Boston and Zoe. We then have our teenage students Gemma and Samantha and our adult students are Malcolm, Crystal and Aaron. We then have our assistant instructors Leana and Crystal.

They have all made the transition from the SPTKD ways to the IMT ways quit well and they all love the new range of patterns with a higher focus on kicking and with a higher standard. We train out of the Ormeau state school at the multipurpose centre on Monday and Wednesday night from 6-7 and we welcome new students. I hope you are all enjoying the cold weather. I know it can be hard to get motivated to train during this cold weather however you need to persist as this is the time when your dedication can be tested, trust me I know. But as the above shows Taekwondo is never something that you quit, it is a way of life, train hard and continue to Strive for perfection. MDT I hope you all enjoyed the recent all rank training session at the centre. I am looking forward to seeing you all on the floor at the

women’s self-defence session on the 28th of June. As I mentioned in my last article I am offering special rates for any IMT members who want to do any additional training and I am very pleased to see John Barron running his class from the centre. We also have the fight & supplement shop up and running and now stock gloves, shin pads, belts, head gear as well as a full range of supplements. Come in and see us, get your extra training in for the next tournament. I am looking forward to seeing you all on the floor learning new things post grading on the 5th of July and those of you at the Black belt session on the Friday night. ALSO note we are running a Richard Norton seminar at MDT on Sat and Sunday 12th and 13th July. Come train with a superstar of martial arts movies—special pricing for IMT members. Details will be with your instructors shortly!

help gain extra height. To further improve your height and hang-time hold the knee tuck for as long as possible which then allows you to remain in the air for longer. Squat Jump Tucks are an excellent way to strengthen your leg muscles allowing them to be more explosive therefore improving your jumping ability. Jumping high along with hang-time allows you to better perform advanced techniques such as jumping double and triple kicks as well as spinning techniques like the 540 spin hook or even the 720. With the next round of the tournament just around the corner jumping kicks are a great way of beating your opponents guard and scoring an easy 3 points.

fully execute your technique as well as landing back in a sparring stance so you are less vulnerable to counter attacks. How to improve the height of your jump: The first step is to create as much momentum as possible travelling upwards. To do this you need to generate momentum by accelerating as much body mass upwards as achievable. To do this, bend your knees and jump off the balls of your feet, tucking your knees to your chest in one explosive motion. At the same time, throw your arms and even your head up towards the ceiling to

With more students progressing into the higher ranks you are required to expand your repertoire of techniques. Although many students find this challenging. I’m here to provide you with some easy and useful tips to improve your jumping techniques. In order to perform successful jumping kicks with exceptional technique there is only one primary focus area!! This area is gaining maximum hang-time. To do this you need to jump as high as possible to allow yourself enough time to

Hello again everyone. We have reached the halfway point of the year and I’m sure you will all be in agreement in saying “Where did that 6 months just go?” Well at Redcliffe, they went into hard training and focus on the gradings and tournaments. Everyone at Redcliffe was very happy with our results at the first tournament at Kallangur. I am, of course, extreme-ly proud of every one of my students who competed on the day.

Remember to give it your best and you will do yourself and your instructor proud.

With the 2nd All Rank train-ing Camp just a couple of months away as well, I would like to see a big turn-out from the students who have never attended a camp before. It’s definitely

a case of “you don’t know what you’re missing!” They are great fun, as well as an opportunity to make new friends, learn something awesome and become a better martial artist. I hope to see you there. That’s it from Redcliffe for now, keep training hard.

It was then an even prouder moment when the final results came in and we found ourselves in the lead by such a large margin. We were all very motivated to keep this lead throughout the remainder of the year, but realise there are a lot of other very motivated stu-dents and instructors who would love to get their hands on the trophy. It will make for a very exciting tournament series I’m sure! I am also very happy with everyone’s training leading into this next grad-ing. Good luck to all students grading, I hope you all do very well.

Good luck Jaz

I’m sure most of you know 2nd degree black belt, Jacinta Forbes (aka Jaz) from Banyo club.

Over the past 5yrs, along with her Tae Kwon Do training, instructing, and attending most

tournaments/gradings etc, Jaz was completing a Bachelor Degree of Physiotherapy. She

completed this last year with flying colours, and recently had her graduation ceremony.

Jaz was also lucky enough (or skilled enough), out of many applicants, to secure one of

four new grad positions this year with Qld Health as a Physiotherapist, based at The

Prince Charles Hospital, Chermside. Out of the 4 new grads employed, 2 of them had to

do a 6 month placing in Rockhampton. 1 person wanted to go, so the odds were in Jaz’s

favour that she wouldn’t have to be the other person to go. Clearly the day they drew the

name out of a hat, wasn’t Jaz’s day, as her name was picked……..not really the lottery she

wanted to win! So, from 13th July, Jaz’s presence will be completely non-existent at Banyo

class for 6mths, and very rare at any other Tae Kwon Do events. I believe she will fly back

to attend gradings or tournaments when she can, but this may not be very often. I know

Jaz’s skill, experience, professionalism, & approachable personality will be greatly missed

in class, and we can only wish her all the best in her experience over the next 6mths, and

look forward to her return. Maybe a tunnel of death when she comes back might be in

order to show her how much we have missed her? Good luck in Rockhampton Jaz, enjoy

every moment, miss us heaps, and make sure you come back!

Rule 2 - A different situation needs a different takedown, so like our “tool box” approach to self-defence, have a similar approach and attitude towards takedowns. Rule 3 – As the person being taken down, DO NOT just fall over. Rule 4 - Takedowns do not rely on strength but in fact throws the person off balance and uses their own weight against them. Rule 5 – In a takedown avoid going down with the person. The point of the takedown is to get them down and you get away How many takedowns do you know? Most people will only ever try 1-2 of them at a grading in set sparring. The more you try them the more confidence you will have and the more natural they will feel.

Banyo breakers

Wow, half the year gone already. We at Banyo have had a great start to the year with yet a few more new members joining our class. Zac, Andrew, Oliver, Aidan and Lina are all new to IMT and we have also had Diep and Hoang join us from the Murrumba Downs club. A big welcome guys it is great to have you there. On a sadder note we will soon be saying farewell to Jaz for 6 months as she heads away for work. On behalf of the whole class we wish you well Jaz and hope like hell you hate it up there so you definitely come back to us. Your passion, enthusiasm, skill and that great smile will be sorely missed by all of us.

After having a number of students unavailable at the last tournament we still managed an honourable 3rd. I hope all the other classes are training strongly as we are coming to get you next round. Training tip: Its winter, its cold and we are more susceptible to injuries during this time. Make sure you get to class early and have a thorough stretch and warm up before it starts. The more time during class we spend warming up, the less time you have to learn.

Narangba has welcomed a few new students including Kade & Casey. Good luck to Kade who will be attempting his first grading today. Narangba has made the move to Burpengary permanent. With the extra facilities at Modern Defensive Tactics it was a pretty easy decision – however we will miss the air conditioning of the dance room at Narangba on those hot summer days of training. Last weekend the Murrumba club had a stall at the Mango Hill night markets at St Benedict’s.

There was a lot of interest and we had 2 demonstrations on stage. A big thanks to all those that came down and helped. It was a fun afternoon/evening and students had the opportunity to show off their skills. Training Tip Recently in both classes we have been looking at the variety of takedowns. At a lower grade we start using takedowns in set sparring. Takedowns are one of those things that are very easy to get WRONG. As we learn you should try to use a variety of takedowns often to help you gain confidence. Rule 1 - Look how the person has their body weight placed. Too much weight on their front foot and it will be hard to pull them backwards.
