The combination of Aidan O’Brien,
Ryan Moore and Galileo (Sadler’s
Wells) have produced countless
elite-level victories, and that was
again the case at Newmarket yesterday as Love
took out the first fillies Classic of the year, the
1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).
In an almost identical scenario to Saturday’s
2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), unbeaten Group 1 winner
Quadrilateral (Frankel) went into the race as the firm
favourite and loomed up to the front runners in the
final stages of the race, but it was Love who stormed
down the centre of the track to win by of four and a
quarter lengths with the minimum of fuss.
The Richard Hannon-trained Cloak Of
Spirits (Invincible Spirit) was second with
Quadrilateral holding on to finish a head away
in third. Continued on page 2>>

Winner of the Moyglare Stud Stakes
(Gr 1, 7f) at the Curragh last year, Love’s only previous start over the
Guineas course was in the Newmarket Fillies' Mile (Gr 1, 1m) last
November, where she was third behind Quadrilateral.
The three-year-old’s victory in front of an empty Rowley Mile
grandstand was O’Brien’s fourth win in the race in five years and the
fourth overall for Moore.
"She was in control of the race a long way out,” the jockey said. “She
won as she liked, really. She's a very uncomplicated filly and we've always
thought an awful lot of her.
"She won the Moyglare last year and we expected her to win the Fillies'
Mile – I don't know if it was too soft for her that day. She's a typical Galileo
filly. If it wasn't for her last run last year you'd have been pretty confident
she was the one to beat today."
Love has shortened into odds of 2-1 on Betway for next month’s
Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Moore said: "I'd say it's a possibility that
she'd stay (1m 4f at Epsom).
“At the moment she looks the best three-year-old filly around. I don't
know what the plan is but I'd say the Oaks is an option for her."
O’Brien added: “We’re delighted with her. She was doing everything
right all through the winter and the spring.
“She’s a lovely filly. We always thought she would get much further
than a mile. She showed she got a mile last year and we always thought
we’d start here and then maybe go on to the Oaks and I think that’s what
the lads were thinking about doing.
“She was well and that was her target all the time. Ryan gave her a
beautiful ride, very uncomplicated, he got her in a lovely rhythm and I
couldn’t have been happier really. He had her well balanced into the dip,
she’s very genuine and she had her head out and ran to the line.
“We were very happy with her run last year (in the Fillies’ Mile).
Looking at the race, it was a very small distance we had to make up.
“We were delighted with her run in the Moyglare. We thought she
handled Newmarket very well and we thought the experience she had last
year would have done her good for this year.”
Due to the UK lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic,
the Guineas was run a month later than normal and O’Brien said that
provided some extra challenges when preparing the filly for her first-up
assignment.
“It was a little bit tricky as it was a bit stop and start, usually it’s a little
bit dangerous when you do that. You have a target, you think you have a
target and you have to train for it and then it moves – it just makes it a little
bit complicated,” he said.
“Everyone has been great, everyone has been very focused and
everybody has put a lot of work into her.
“Obviously she’s a beautifully-bred filly by Galileo and I’m delighted
for the lads. She’s a special filly.”

Richard Hannon is the only trainer
to have broken O'Brien's 1,000 Guineas stranglehold since 2016 with
Billesdon Brook (Champs Elysees) in 2018, and the trainer has high hopes
for runner-up Cloak Of Spirits, with the Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at
Royal Ascot one possibility.
He said: "I'm delighted with her. She did the donkey work and stuck
at it. She's very elegant and a pretty classy filly. There will be a lot of good
races in her. Maybe the Coronation Stakes could be next but I will speak to
Sheikh Obaid (owner) and see what he says.
"I think being out in front suits her and I think Andrea (Atzeni, jockey)
rode her perfectly. She hasn’t lit the world up with her homework but she
is always like that anyway. I didn’t know what to expect but she has run a
super race and beat a lot of very good fillies there."
Like Pinatubo (Shamardal) in the 2,000 Guineas, Quadrilateral lost
her unbeaten record as favourite when finishing third, but the Roger
Charlton-trained filly stuck to her task doggedly, shaping like she could
stay beyond a mile.
Charlton said: "She stayed on well but just got a little tired in the
closing stages. She could have probably done with a little more cover
but these races are being run from the front and nothing is coming from
behind, so you have to be handy.
"I was happy enough with that. The track probably doesn't play to her
strengths but Jason (Watson, jockey) seemed happy enough with the run."
The trainer added: "I don't know what we will do going forward. I will
talk to Prince Khalid [owner] first. I'd imagine she would stay further but
we won't be rushing her."
Bred and raced by Coolmore, Love (3 f Galileo - Pikaboo by Pivotal)
has had eight starts for four wins and two placings, earning £453,044 in
prize-money.
She is the eighth foal, and sixth to race, out of the unplaced Pivotal
(Polar Falcon) mare Pikaboo, making her a sister to Group 3 winners
Peach Tree and Flattering, while she is also a half-sister to dual Group 2
scorer Lucky Kristale (Lucky Story).
Out of the Danehill (Danzig) mare Gleam Of Light, Pikaboo herself is a
half-sister to triple Group 2 winner and former Ivy House Stables resident
Arabian Gleam (Kyllachy) as well as dual Listed scorer Kimberella
(Kyllachy).
The cross between Galileo and Pivotal mares has a 41 per cent stakes
winners to runners rate with 12 individual stakes winners and six Group
1 scorers.
The Galileo / Pivotal cross is responsible for champion mare Magical
and last year’s 1,000 Guineas winner Hermosa, both of whom were trained
by O’Brien, as well as Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) victor The United States.
Coolmore Ireland stalwart Galileo is the sire of 84 individual Group 1
winners, four of which have taken out yesterday’s Classic. He stands for a
private fee in 2020.

First for Criterion
Four-time Group 1 winner Criterion (Sebring)
sired his first winner yesterday when Blaze A
Trail (2 c ex Flaming by Bachelor Duke) took out
a 1300-metre maiden handicap for country and
provincial horses at Hawkesbury yesterday. The
Matthew Vella-trained colt, who finished third in
the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) in November,
led home a juvenile quinella against the older
horses when defeating Sammy (Medaglia d’Oro)
by a length, with three-year-old Invictus Felix
(Poet’s Voice) a nose away in third. Criterion stood
at Newgate Farm but was found to be subfertile,
producing only 19 live foals; Blaze A Trail is one of
only two to race so far.
Winx sibling to debut at Warwick FarmSix years and four days after the incomparable
Winx (Street Cry) made a winning racetrack debut
at Warwick Farm, her half-sister Covent Garden
(Exceed And Excel) will step out for the first time
at the same venue today. Two-year-old Covent
Garden will see the Winx combination, trainer
Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman, reunite
once more. "She is a bit new, she's certainly not
the ready-made article at this stage but she's a
decent filly," Bowman said. "She is working really
well at home and her trials have been good. She
is ready to race but she is going to improve from
any experience she has. You could see she was a
bit raw in her trial but she got a chance to stick her
head out late which was good."
Vanna Girl chases The RosesA spring campaign targeting the Matriarch Stakes
(Gr 2, 2000m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival
could be on the radar for Vanna Girl (Husson)
if she can win The Roses (Gr 2, 1800m) at Eagle
Farm on Saturday. Co-trainer Toby Edmonds, who
celebrated his biggest career success last weekend
with Tyzone’s (Written Tycoon) Stradbroke
Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) victory, believes that
Vanna Girl has the makings of a top-class middle-
distance and staying type. "We really thought she
was a Queensland Oaks horse but with both it
and the Derby off the table we had no option but
to change her program," Edmonds, who trains in
partnership with his son Trent, said. "The Roses
has been her aim against her own sex and age
although I would not be all that upset if she missed
it. She has won the Daybreak Lover and the Pam
O'Neill, which were both black-type, this time in."
Edmonds pleased with juveniles after AtkinsMeanwhile, Trent Edmonds reported that the
stable was pleased with the efforts of their two
J J Atkins (Gr 1, 1400m) runners; third-placed
The Drinks Cart (Unencumbered) and Wisdom
Of Water (Headwater), who finished fifth. “The
Drinks Cart has a lot of talent and I think he’s
only just starting to realise it,” Edmonds told ANZ
Bloodstock News. “I think he’ll go to the paddock
now and we can aim at the Magic Millions
Guineas, I reckon. We know Rothfire can’t turn
up there! The other colt (Wisdom Of Water)
probably didn’t run out the 1400 metres from
the wide barrier, he got stirred up but that’s just
him and I don’t think that had any bearing on his
performance. He probably has to butt heads with
Rothfire again in the spring, to be fair, in races like
the Coolmore. He’s high class at 1100 and 1200
metres, so we’ll keep him to those journeys.”
Waller to have big say in Tattersalls CupFresh from victory in a 2200-metre Benchmark 80
handicap at Eagle Farm last weekend, the Chris
Waller-trained Stardome (Savabeel) may be given
his opportunity to line up alongside some of the
stable’s stalwarts in the Tattersall’s Cup (Gr 3,
2400m) on Saturday. Stardome may join the likes
of Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Le
Juge (Dansili), Gosford Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m)
victor Another Dollar (Ocean Park) and last year’s
Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) conqueror Shraaoh
(Sea The Stars) in what will be Brisbane’s staying
feature of the winter. "I think he is up to some of
the better races in the winter. But Chris will make
the decision about a Tatt's Cup after he looks at
the likely field," Waller’s Queensland manager
Paul Shailer said.
Group 1 wins add award battle intrigue The first Queensland-trained double in the
Stradbroke Handicap and the J J Atkins since
1984 has thrown the race for the state’s Horse
of the Year title wide open. Voting will start at
the end of July with the award to be presented
in September. Before Saturday’s meeting, it was
expected that Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) would
take the prize, but with the strong Queensland
ties of Tyzone (Written Tycoon) and Rothfire
(Rothesay), it now shapes as a competitive affair.

Cahill and Orman suspended after StradbrokeJockeys Michael Cahill and Jimmy Orman
have been suspended in the aftermath of last
Saturday’s Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.
Cahill rode defending champion Trekking (Street
Cry) and was found guilty of causing interference
to Niccanova (Nicconi) at the 1000 metres. He was
suspended for seven days, starting after Saturday’s
Eagle Farm meeting. Orman, who partnered
Niccanova, also found trouble, banned for 11
days after pleading guilty to causing interference
to Winter Bride at the 100 metres. His suspension
also starts on Sunday. Both jockeys can ride at the
Tattersall's Cup meeting on Saturday. In addition,
Robbie Fradd was fined $500 for excessive use of
the whip on Stradbroke Handicap winner Tyzone
(Written Tycoon).
New-look Avdulla emerges from form slumpSydney rider Brenton Avdulla, sporting a new
bleached-blonde hairstyle, rode a treble on
Saturday that ended a long run of outs that
stretched back to Anzac Day. Two of those
winners were for Chris Waller, who joked that
Avdulla had spurned his advice on his way to
turning around his form. "He said to me a couple
of weeks ago, I can't take a trick and I said don't
change anything," Waller said. "But he didn't take
that. He changed his hair!" Avdulla admitted that
he was starting to lose confidence. "I said to my
manager, if I get to zero and a hundred, I'll retire
back to the provincials," Avdulla said. "I had
someone tell me the other day that I was about
none for 80. They said, 'Are you disappointed?'
and I said, 'Not really, disappointing is when
you're going to the pub and the Uber driver goes
the wrong way.’ This is just racing.”
Maher and Eustace in contention for premiershipsThe Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable
is aiming at trainers’ titles on multiple fronts,
appearing firmly in contention to take out the
Melbourne, Victorian and Australian premierships.
Maher and Eustace are ten wins behind David and
Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig in the metropolitan
title, while they are only one behind the Lindsay
Park team in the statewide race. "There's a lot of
planning going on at the moment to try to catch
Lindsay Park in the metro premiership which is
proving difficult the last few weeks," Eustace said.
"But we haven't given up hope." It is the national
title, where they are one behind Sydney’s Chris
Waller, that is more surprising. "We have runners
spread far and wide and you can't do any of that
without having a lot of people in different places,”
Eustace said. “I think more than anything it would
just be a great lift and a deserved lift for them if we
were able to get the national one."

Yendall’s weekend of country cupsJockey Dean Yendall made it a brace of country
cups this weekend when he took the Swan Hill
Cup (1600m) on Heptagon (Jimmy Choux)
yesterday. That win came 24 hours after he took
the Apsley Cup (2000m) at Casterton on Patch
Adams (Dane Shadow). Heptagon never looked
in doubt, taking the Swan Hill feature by three
lengths with the Mick Price and Michael Kent
Jr-trained six-year-old set for stakes company
later in his preparation. "It was a perfect ride
and he was given every chance," Kent said.
"The Winter Championship was in the back of
our mind pending him going on with it. We'll
get him home, he'll have a week at the beach
and the aim will probably be to get him to
Flemington."
King’s Legacy to return to workDual Group 1-winning juvenile King’s Legacy
(Redoute’s Choice) is set to return to Peter and
Paul Snowden’s stables at Randwick today,
with the colt set to aim at the Golden Rose
(Gr 1, 1400m) and the Caulfield Guineas (Gr
1, 1600m) as a spring three-year-old. King’s
Legacy, who won the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) and the Champagne Stakes (Gr
1, 1600m), was the only two-year-old to win
multiple Group 1 races this season. "He comes
back to the stable on Monday," Peter Snowden
said yesterday. "He's had a couple of weeks of
pre-training so he's on track. All reports are he's
done pretty well. Certainly the Golden Rose
will be a target race for him in Sydney. That
will probably be second-up for him. And the
Caulfield Guineas is a must. We always thought
he would get better as he got older and hopefully
we'll just see that natural improvement in him.”
Spring schedule sees change of plans for Fifty StarsTom Dabernig is looking to the Mackinnon
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) with Australian Cup (Gr 1,
2000m) winner Fifty Stars (Sea The Stars) after
last week’s decision to maintain spring race
programming as is. Dabernig will operate in
partnership with cousin Ben Hayes when Ben’s
father David Hayes departs for Hong Kong at
the end of the season and the pair had hoped
Fifty Stars may be able to contest the Caulfield
Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) if it were run in November.
However, with Fifty Stars on the comeback
trail after a knee issue, he is likely to try and
add a second feature over the Flemington 2000
metres.

Rostropovich cleared to increase workload Lindsay Park stayer Rostropovich (Frankel) has
been given the all-clear to continue his path
towards a potential return to racing. Rostropovich
suffered a pelvic injury and finished a tailed-
off last in November’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,
3200m), with his rehabilitation involving work
on the treadmill and the water walker, before a
bone scintigraphy at Goulburn Equine Hospital
last week cleared him to step up. "He will do four
weeks of trotting and cantering," co-trainer Tom
Dabernig said. "At the end of those four weeks,
and if the vets are happy, he might then progress
to a bit of even time. He may just have a light
spring, even if it's one run or even a trial, then
we may back off him and look to the autumn. He
looks great, is healthy and well, and managing his
freshness at the moment is the hardest thing.”
Dabernig suggests Derby changes for 2020While the spring race dates are locked in for 2020,
Lindsay Park’s Tom Dabernig believes there is an
opportunity to tweak the program by shortening
both the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and the
VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) to 2000 metres. “With
the tradition of it all, I don't know if they ever will,"
Dabernig said. "To me it makes a lot of sense,
especially from a trainers point of view. I think
it would be a much more marketable race for a
stallion's perspective for breeding, but it would
also be a lot easier on the animal. I haven't done
the stats on it, but I just know from our horses over
the years that we've pushed on to the Derby, the
injury rate is quite high and the comeback rate
from it is not the best.”

Reliable Man filly tops South Island Sale
New Zealand Bloodstock’s annual South Island
Sale saw its first-ever online session conclude on
Gavelhouse Plus yesterday, with Lot 2 - a Reliable
Man (Dalakhani) filly out of Listed winner Lady
Zafira (Iffraaj) topping the sale at NZ$58,500.
Prominent agent Phill Cataldo was busy
throughout the sale, investing in four yearlings.
That included the top-priced lot early on in the
session, who was purchased on behalf of an
Australian buyer. “She is a very well-grown, strong
and athletic filly,” Cataldo said. “I like Reliable
Man. I was involved with the purchase of Kinane
at the 2018 Ready to Run Sale. He is a Group 3
winner in Australia and is going really well, so he
definitely appeals to their market.” A total of 64
yearlings were offered, with 34 being sold through
the digital platform.
Changing of the guard for BennerA number of Johno Benner’s stable stars have
left his yard in recent months, but the trainer
remains hopeful that his young team may be
able to step up heading into the spring. Group
1 winner Wyndspelle (Iffraaj) has been retired,
Group 2 victor Gold Bracelet (Pins) has been sold
and will join Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr in
Australia and stakes-placed Piaggio (Vespa) has
also changed hands. “It has put a bit of a hole in the
team but we definitely have some horses here that
can fill the void,” he said. “We’ll probably just plod
along for the next couple of months but then once
spring racing starts, we will have some very nice
horses ready to go. We have got a really nice Exceed
And Excel filly that looks very smart plus a couple
of others that we got from the Karaka sales.”
Wallace enjoying a break back in New ZealandChina Horse Club chief operating officer Michael
Wallace has returned home to New Zealand,
taking advantage of the postponement of some
of the major American yearling sales to be able to
assess the Club’s New Zealand team. “I had to do
the quarantine period when I came back which
finished about ten days ago,” Wallace said. “I’m
only temporarily back here before I return to the
States although everything is fairly quiet at this time
of year. We’re waiting for racing to get going here
in New Zealand but we do think we have quite an
exciting team of young horses that will be ready to
go for the spring. Most of them have gone back into
work this week and we feel like we have a pretty
good bunch.” Among their leading lights is Listed
winner Unition (Fastnet Rock), who is targeting the
New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

Upset Yasuda Kinenwin to Gran AlegriaFor the second year in a row, Japanese champion
mare Almond Eye (Lord Kanaloa) has gone down
at a short quote in the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m).
Yesterday, she never looked likely to defeat third
favourite Gran Alegria (4 f Deep Impact - Tapitsfly
by Tapit), who strode clear under Kenichi Ikezoe
for an effortless two and a half length win. Almond
Eye, who was slightly slow to begin, finished
second, with fellow Silk Racing galloper Indy
Champ (Stay Gold) - last year’s winner - finishing
third, a half-length away. It was a second Group 1
win for Gran Alegria, whose dam Tapitsfly (Tapit)
was a two-time American Grade 1 victor.

British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes
(5f) by a comfortable margin of five lengths in
debut at Lingfield. Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1,

with Dashing Willoughby (4 g Nathaniel -
Miss Dashwood by Dylan Thomas). Dashing
Willoughby, the winner of last year’s Queen’s
Vase (Gr 2, 1m6f) at Royal Ascot, defeated Secret
Advisor (Dubawi) by a length with First In Line
(New Approach) coming home a further length
and three-quarters away in third. The four-
year-old gelding is one of two foals out of Miss
Dashwood (Dylan Thomas) who herself is a half
sister to 2016 France and Great Britain Champion
Older Female and dual Group 1 winner Speedy
Boarding (Shamardal). Dashing Willoughby is
one of 18 individual stakes winners for Newsells
Park Stud resident Nathaniel (Galileo), who stood
for a fee of £25,000 in 2020.
Pinnacle for Lope De Vega mareAfter going winless in 2019, Manuela De Vega (4 m
Lope De Vega - Roscoff by Daylami) kicked off her
2020 campaign in style with a win in the Pinnacle
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 3.5f) at Haydock yesterday. The
Ralph Beckett-trained mare won by a comfortable
margin of two lengths to Fanny Logan (Sea The
Stars) with Vivionn (Dubawi) finishing a further
four lengths back in third. Fourth in last year’s
Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f), Manuela De Vega is a
sister to 2014 Champion 2YO Colt in Italy Hero
Look and dual-Listed winner Isabel De Urbina.
She is one of 69 stakes winners for her former

last year, returned to British racing for the first

a fee of £250,000 in 2020.
Liberty Beach makes winning return at HaydockLast year’s Molecomb Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) winner
Liberty Beach (Cable Bay) justified favouritism
in the EBF Cecil Frail Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 6f)
on her return at Haydock yesterday. The John
Quinn-trained three-year-old took it up in the
final furlong and went on to win by three-quarters
of a length from the fast finishing Queen Jo Jo
(Gregorian), who snatched the runner-up spot
by a head from Maid In India (Bated Breath).
The high-class sprinter is now five wins from
seven runs and also includes the valuable
Hilary Needler Trophy (5f), the Dragon Stakes
(Listed, 5f) and her Molecomb victory, as well as
a second in the Lowther Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) in her
race record. Woodside Park Stud shuttler Cable
Bay (Invincible Spirit) has had his fee reduced to
$9,900 (inc GST) this coming season, however he
stood for an increased fee of £15,000 at Highclere
Stud in the UK this year.
90 for TeofiloBrasilian Man (4 c ex Alta Fedelta by Oasis
Dream) took his tally to four wins from eight
starts and gained a first stakes success at his first
attempt in Group company yesterday with victory
in the Premio Ambrosiano (Gr 3, 2000m) at Milan.
Gerard Mosse guided the colt to a neck victory
over the German raider Walderbe (Maxios), while
seven-year-old Presley (Gladatorious) was two
and a quarter lengths back in third. The four-
year-old became the 90th stakes winner for his
sire Teofilo (Galileo) who last shuttled in 2017
and stood at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland in
2020 for a fee of €40,000.
30 for CamelotGerman raider Light My Fire (5 m ex Dixie
Dance by Orpen) took out the Premio Paolo
Mezzanotte (Listed, 2200m) at Milan for Károly
Kerekes and became the 30th stakes winner for
her sire Camelot (Montjeu). The mare got the
better of Cima Fire (Holy Roman Emperor) by
three and a half lengths and Agnes (Planteur)
was a further one and a half lengths away in
third. Five-year-old Light My Fire has now won
five of her 21 starts and also ran third in the
Premio EBF Terme di Merano (Listed, 2200m)
last August. Camelot last shuttled to Coolmore
Australia in 2014 and stood for €40,000 at
Coolmore in Ireland in 2020.
Champion returns to land Listed successOnly four went to post in the Premio Bereguardo
(Listed, 1600m) at Milan yesterday and last
year’s Italian Champion Three-Year-Old
Miler Out Of Time (Sakhee’s Secret) took the
honours by a neck from the Claudio Colombi-
trained Villabate (Holy Roman Emperor),
with Beautiful Vintage (Zebedee) two and a
half lengths adrift in third. The Botti-trained
four-year-old was having his first run this year,
having finished up with victories in the Premio
Vittorio di Capua (Gr 2, 1600m) and Premio
Ribot (Gr 3, 1600m) last October and November.
Former New Zealand shuttler Sakhee’s Secret
(Sakhee) relocated from Whitsbury Manor Stud
in England to Italy in 2015 where he has stood
since at Allevamento Si Fra.
Premio Certosa ConqueredThe Conqueror (5 c Excelebration ex March
Madness by Noverre) added a third Listed win
to his CV when taking out the Premio Certosa
(Listed, 1000m) at Milan yesterday. The five-
year-old entire defeated Buonasera (Zebedee)
by four lengths with Trust You (Kheleyf)
coming home a half-length away in third. The
Conqueror is out of six-time Listed placegetter,
March Madness (Noverre) making him a half-
brother to stakes winner Candy Store (Lope
De Vega). Coolmore resident Excelebration
(Exceed And Excel) is the sire of eight individual
stakes scorers, including dual Group 1 winner
Barney Roy. He shuttled to Australia for four
years from 2013-2016, covering 337 mares.
69 for DynastyLate South African stallion Dynasty (Fort
Wood) recorded his 69th individual stakes
winner yesterday when Bunker Hunt (4 h ex
Secret Obsession by Captain Al) took out the
Drill Hall Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Greyville. The
Justin Snaith-trained Bunker Hunt, who had
performed well at stakes level without winning,
was brought through along the inside by Keagan
De Melo, sprinting through strongly for a length
and three-quarter win over stablemate Kasimir
(Captain Al) with Queen’s Plate (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner Vardy (Var) a neck away back in third.
76 for TrippiTrippi (End Sweep) sired his 76th stakes winner
as Wild Coast (3 c ex Beach Beauty by Dynasty)
narrowly defeated Padre Pio (Vercingetorix) to
cause a shock in the Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at
Greyville yesterday. Cape Derby (Gr 1, 2000m)
winner Golden Ducat (Philanthropist) came
home a half-length further back in third. Wild
Coast is the only winner out of Champion South
African mare Beach Beauty (Dynasty). Trippi,
champion sire of 2016 in South Africa, stands at
Drakenstein Stud for a private fee.

First for Honor Code
Honor A P (3 r ex Hollywood Story by Wild Rush)
became the first Grade 1 winner for Honor Code
(A P Indy) when landing the Santa Anita Derby
(Gr 1, 9f) at Santa Anita on Saturday. The John
Sherreffs-trained three-year-old turned the tables
on the previously undefeated San Felipe Stakes (Gr
1, 8.5f) victor Authentic (Into Mischief) in scoring
a two and three-quarter length victory under Mike
Smith. The Michael McCarthy-trained Rushie
(Liam's Map) ran a good race to be a length and
three quarters third on his stakes debut. The victory
assures Honor A P a spot in the Kentucky Derby (Gr
1, 10f) in September and takes the ridgling's tally to
two wins from four starts with earnings of $362,200.
Honor Code stands at Lane's End where his 2020
fee was $30,000.
16 for Candy RideVekoma (4 h ex Mona De Momma by
Speightstown) captured his first Grade 1 victory
at Belmont Park on Saturday when taking out
the Carter Handicap (Gr 1, 7f) and he became
his sire Candy Ride's (Ride The Rails) 16th top
level winner. The winner of the Nashua Stakes
(Gr 3, 8f) as a two-year-old and Blue Grass
Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) last year, the George Weaver-
trained four-year-old settled just off the pace
and kicked clear in the stretch to record a seven
and a quarter length victory. Network Effect
(Mark Valeski) took second by a length and a
quarter from American Anthem (Bodemeister)
in third. The win gives Vekoma an automatic
berth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) at
Keeneland in November, being a 'Win and
You're In' race, and he is now three wins from
six starts, with earnings of $112,980. Candy Ride
stands at Lane's End where his 2020 fee was
$100,000.
Improbable lands Hollywood Gold CupLast year’s Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) favourite
Improbable (City Zip), who had largely
disappointed as a three-year-old, including
when fourth on the first Saturday in May,
showed some of his old sparkle on Saturday
by taking out the Hollywood Gold Cup (Gr 1,
10f) at Santa Anita. The Bob Baffert-trained
Improbable, who raced handy throughout,
drew away for a comfortable three and a
quarter length win over Pacific Classic (Gr 1,
10f) winner Higher Power. It was his first Grade
1 win since taking the Los Alamitos Futurity (Gr
1, 8.5f) in 2018. “This horse has been training
so well,” Baffert said. “Drayden (Van Dyke)
had him in the perfect spot and he had plenty
left for the run home. I'm happy for the team.
Everyone thought this horse was a turf horse,
and I thought he needed the dirt. This horse is
only going to get better."
Madison County progressing well towards States debutTwo-time New Zealand Group 1 winner
Madison County (Pins), who was also runner-
up in last year’s Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m),
is set to make his first American start in the
coming months after an injury-interrupted
preparation. Madison County, who is now in
training with top turf handler Chad Brown, has
been back in work a month. “We took Madison
County over to America and he was in his first
prep when he pulled up a little bit scratchy in
the same knee that he chipped when he ran
second in the Australian Derby,” China Horse
Club chief operating officer Michael Wallace
said. “It wasn’t anything major although we
had to back off him a little, but he has been back
in work for about a month now. He is getting
through some slow work and I would hope that
come the early part of September he would be
ready to step out somewhere.”
Charlatan out of Belmont, Kentucky DerbyArkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f) winner Charlatan
(Speightstown) will miss the Belmont Stakes
(Gr 1, 9f) and the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f)
after suffering a minor ankle issue, trainer
Bob Baffert revealed on Saturday. "He had a
little filling in the front of his ankle; we X-rayed
it and really couldn't see a lot," Baffert told
Bloodhorse. "We did an MRI and then we could
see some tiny little (specks). We're going to go
in there and just flush it out. It's very minor,
but it's agitating the front of it. It's the first time
he's had heat and a little pressure in the ankle,
so we're going to flush it out and give him 45
days off and get him going." Charlatan remains
under a cloud for his Arkansas Derby win after
he failed an initial post-race test; his B-sample
is being tested.

Matthew Poon illuminated a
rain-drenched Sunday at
Sha Tin yesterday with a
four-timer capped by victory
aboard the courageous Perfect Match (Not A
Single Doubt) in the Class 2 Butterfly Handicap
(1400m).
The Danny Shum-trained Perfect Match
defied a 130-pound burden to gallop with
resolute heart through yielding ground and
claim the afternoon’s finale by half a length from
the fast-closing Mongolian King (Sufficient).
“I didn’t expect this; I didn’t expect four
winners today,” Poon said. “The rain we had
meant that conditions must have suited my
horses and they were able to perform, so I had
all the benefits – I’m very happy and lucky!
“Perfect Match was brave but in the last
200 metres I wasn’t too confident because he
carried top-weight; he had worked hard early
because other horses made the pace strong
so I thought he might tire. I was careful not to
hit him too early and he showed he was fit and
tough enough. Danny Shum put him in a turf
gallop and that just put him spot on and made
the thing happen.”
The rider bookended the action: he teed up
the quartet with a success in race one, the Class
5 Wu King Handicap (1200m), aboard Great
Son (Danerich) for trainer Paul O’Sullivan.
“Great Son had a perfect run,” Poon said.
“He was just behind the fast pace and travelled
comfortably so he was able to give me a little
kick.”
Between times, Poon was on the mark
with the Ricky Yiu-trained Mighty Valor
(Snitzel), followed by the Jimmy Ting-ridden
Hello Daddy (Keeper) in the Class 3 On Ting
Handicap (1600m) – the New Zealand import,
winner of the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m)
last year, opened his Hong Kong account at the
seventh attempt.
Poon’s four-timer was his second in Hong
Kong and first at the big track, having achieved
the feat at Happy Valley on September 13, 2017.
Yiu inches towards first title
Poon had the luxury of enjoying an eased-
down cruise past the post on Mighty Valor
in section two of the Class 4 Po Tin Handicap
(1200m), a success that gave the long-time
premiership leader Yiu a welcome five-win
cushion over his nearest rival, Francis Lui.
Yiu knows every victory is precious at the
tail-end of any Hong Kong season but when a
championship is on the line, those victories are
priceless. With ten of 87 race meetings still to get
through, keeping the athletes fresh and happy
is as paramount as fitness and placement.
Yiu had the foresight to give Mighty Valor a
break after the maiden’s form faded out in mid-
February, sending his charge to the Hong Kong
Jockey Club’s facility at Conghua in late March
before returning the gelding to Sha Tin earlier
this week, primed to go again.
“He’s really taken benefit from his time in
Conghua,” Yiu said. “He’s more settled, he’s
healthier – you can see in the sheen of his coat –
overall, he’s much more relaxed now.”
And the handler is hoping his charge will
give further aid to his cause before the season
ends on July 15.
“We’ll run him again at the same distance –
today I took the blinkers off because he’d been
showing me he had enough speed,” he added.
Such was Mighty Valor’s dominance that
Poon dropped his handful of rein low on the
three-year-old’s neck through a free-wheeling
final 50 metres.
“He trialled very well on the dirt in Conghua
and I think since he’s had a rest he’s come back
fitter and he was able to handle the wet conditions,
so that’s why it looked so easy,” Poon said.

Chan’s first trebleAlfred Chan broke new ground with
the first three-timer of his career. The Hong
Kong Jockey Club Apprentice Jockeys’
School scholar opened with Magic Supreme
(Zoustar), continued with Care Free Prince
(Street Sense) and wrapped up with Baltic
Whisper (Charge Forward).
The crowning victory came in the Class 3
Fu Tai Handicap (1000m), with Chan urging
the Shum-trained Baltic Whisper stand-side
through the rain to hold off the Joao Moreira-
ridden favourite War Of Courage (Declaration
Of War) by a short-head.
“That feels good – absolutely,” Chan said.
“I galloped him the other day and I said to
Danny that he worked much better than when
I rode him earlier this season. The weather
and the track conditions affected a lot today
but he enjoyed it.”
The rider, now 16 months into his Hong
Kong career, had already posted three doubles
this season, the latest only a week ago.
“The important thing for me is that now
we’re at the end of the season, my seven-
pound claim is really helping the horses,” he
said. “I’m progressing slightly and gradually,
just getting better and learning all the time.”
And it was so close to being a Poon-
matching four wins but for Mister Monte’s
(Hussonet) narrow second to Great Smart
(Fastnet Rock) in race four.
“I was beaten by a short-head – I was a
little bit angry about it but I couldn't help the
draw (13). Racing is racing and one day you
beat the others and another day they beat
you,” he said.
The apprentice’s first win helped John
Moore edge closer to contention for the
trainers’ championship as Magic Supreme
improved the handler’s haul to 51 wins, seven
off the top spot and just one behind third-
positioned Tony Cruz. Chan guided the four-
year-old to a maiden score in section one of
the Class 4 Po Tin Handicap (1200m).
He then teamed with a horse he knows
well, Care Free Prince. The Manfred Man-
trained seven-year-old was Chan’s first Hong
Kong winner, back on April 7 last year, and the
rider made no mistake when hurrying to the
fore from gate 12 and driving to victory in the
Class 4 Sam Shing Handicap (1400m).
Man took his tally to 29 with his sixth
double of the campaign: Great Smart, ridden
by Matthew Chadwick, got his head down
to deny Mister Monte in the Class 5 Yau Oi
Handicap (1800m).
Moreira started the day five behind Zac
Purton in the jockeys’ title race but closed
the gap and ended a run of 26 races without a
win when the John Size-trained Leap Of Faith
(Sebring) won the Class 4 Tai Hing Handicap
(1600m).
Benno Yung saddled a 283/1 winner at
Happy Valley on Wednesday night and the
trainer welcomed a 12/1 success thanks to
Win Win (Casino Prince) living up to his name
again after four consecutive double-digit
finishes. Brazilian rider Vagner Borges pushed
the four-year-old a length and a half clear in
the Class 3 Lung Yat Handicap (1400m).

Kameko, one of 14 top-level
performers by US turf sire
extraordinaire Kitten's Joy (El
Prado), proved a cut above his
rivals when landing the opening Classic of the
British season, the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at
Newmarket.
The colt, who won the Vertem Futurity
Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) at two, is owned by Qatar
Racing, whose silks were previously carried by
Kitten's Joy's highest-rated runner to date, the
much-missed Roaring Lion.
Kameko got the better of the Aidan
O'Brien-trained Wichita (No Nay Never) by a
neck, though was value for a greater margin of
superiority.
Although the master of Ballydoyle missed
out on training the winner of this year's 2,000
Guineas, his family did have a hand in breeding
the rising star.
Qatar Racing's journey with Kameko began
at the same place their involvement with
Roaring Lion started, the Keeneland September
Yearling Sale, with racing manager David
Redvers paying what now looks a bargain sum
of US$90,000 for the youngster when he was
offered by Paramount Sales.
Bred by Calumet Farm, Kameko is the
fifth foal out of Sweeter Still, a daughter of
Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill) formerly trained
at Ballydoyle and bred by O'Brien's wife,
Annemarie. Sweeter Still finished fourth in
the Flame of Tara Stakes (Listed, 6f) at two but
enjoyed greater success after switching to the
US, most notably when winning the Senorita
Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) for Jeff Mullins.
Despite her evident talent as a broodmare,
Sweeter Still, a half-sister to Racing Post Trophy
(Gr 1, 1m) scorer Kingsbarns (Galileo) and the
Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial (7f) winner
Belle Artiste (Namid), boasts a wildly varied
sales history.
In 2014 she was bought by Royal Oak Farm
for US$750,000 at the Keeneland January Sale,
but transferred to the ownership of Calumet
Farm for a mere $35,000 in November 2016.
Even more remarkably, she was then sold on
to T Lesley Thompson for only $1,500 in November
2018 when carrying to Optimizer (English Channel),
just two months after Redvers purchased Kameko.
Her 2019 yearling - a daughter of Big Blue
Kitten (Kitten’s Joy), and therefore a close relation
to Kameko - was bought by Atlantic Bloodstock
for just US$5,000 last September.
The filly is entered in the Arqana Breeze-Up
Sale, due to be held in Doncaster on July 1, where
she will be consigned by Church Farm and Horse
Park Stud.
Kameko's victory also provided Rock Of
Gibraltar with his first Classic success as a
broodmare sire. Fittingly, he achieved that feat in
a race he himself won in 2002 when beating Hawk
Wing (Woodman).
The son of Danehill (Danzig) is the damsire of
five Group/Grade 1 winners, with Kameko joined
by Belvoir Bay (Equiano), Line Of Duty (Galileo),
Mikki Isle (Deep Impact) and Photo Call (Galileo).

What is a leader? It is a
question that cannot easily
be defined, for they can fill
so many different roles and
they can have a range of different traits.
For the team that Simon Johnson leads at
Godolphin Australia’s Woodlands property,
where he is assistant stud manager, he is the
epitome of a leader. It is why he, for the second
consecutive year, has been nominated for the
Leadership Award, one of seven categories that
will be recognised through the 2020 Stud and
Stable Staff Awards, supported by Godolphin.
“Simon is the person these Awards were
created for,” said Johnson’s colleague Kylie
Mills. “He is a motivator who is constantly
leading his team toward excellence, fostering
their careers and always encouraging.”
That fits with Johnson’s definition of a
leader and stamps him as a mentor fostering the
breeding industry’s up-and-comers.
“A leader respects their team, trusts that
they give their best and enables them to do
their best work,” Johnson told ANZ Bloodstock
News yesterday. “A leader supports their team
to succeed and values there is something to be
learned from everyone and that two heads are
generally better than one.
“I am very grateful and acknowledge that
many people have invested a great deal of time
and effort on me throughout my career and that is
something I try to do for the people I work with too.

NAME: SIMON JOHNSONAGE: 39EMPLOYER: GODOLPHIN AUSTRALIA - WOODLANDSNOMINATED FOR: LEADERSHIPNOMINATED BY: KYLIE MILLS

joining Patinack Farm, where I was broodmare manager and then
assistant stud manager. I joined Darley, working as stallion manager at
Kelvinside, and it’s been great to continue the Darley connection in my
current position.”
In his role at Godolphin Woodlands, he is exposed to some of the most
regally-bred and best-performing mares in Australia and he admits that it
is still surreal at times.
“All of the horses get industry-leading care, the highest level of
care possible, but there are occasions when you realise the quality and
value of our mares,” he said. “Earlier this year, just before Covid-19 hit,
we had visitors I was showing around the farm. A group of horses were
near the gate so we stopped for them to give them a pat. In the paddock
were multiple Group 1 winner Alizee, Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi
(Golden Slipper winner) and Group winner Pohutakawa, among others.
It happens all the time - at Woodlands, we are surrounded by superstars
of racing every day.
“There are too many of them to have favourites but they all have their own
personalities and idiosyncrasies and knowing them makes every day special.”
One of the horses though that Johnson admits having a soft spot for
is Lonhro (Octagonal), who he worked closely with when he was stallion
manager at Darley Kelvinside: “I’ve never managed to watch his Australian
Cup win without getting emotional! He’s a superstar of our industry and
a real character. The years I spent riding him around Kelvinside keeping
him fit and stimulated were very special.”
The Leadership Award winner receives a trophy and $10,000, with
$3,000 to their employer to share amongst staff.
“It’s a great honour to be nominated for doing what I love,” Johnson
said. “I’m honoured to work with such a great team and they make me
a better horseman every day. It’s a terrific initiative to acknowledge all
the people that dedicate themselves to our industry and share their
knowledge and love for horses.
“To win would be amazing and would be an acknowledgement of all
the outstanding people we have at Woodlands, they are such a great team
to lead.”
The Stud and Stable Staff Awards will be presented during a virtual
ceremony on June 17.
“We have an obligation to give everyone who comes into the industry,
and who shows a willingness to learn, the opportunity to advance
themselves. I get tremendous satisfaction from sharing what I know with
the great people we have at Godolphin and at Woodlands.”
A South Australian native, Johnson has been surrounded by and
exposed to horses for almost all of his life.
“Growing up in Adelaide, I spent all of my school holidays with my
grandparents on their farm between Yorketown and Edithburgh on the
Southern Yorke Peninsula,” he said. “I was horse mad and spent all day
riding around the paddocks or down to Coobowie beach. I was involved
with the Southern Yorke Peninsula pony club and have many great
memories from those days.
“As I got older I rode and worked at Templewood in the Adelaide Hills
too.”
The one thing that Johnson has continued to do, from his teens until
now - on the cusp of his forties - is to further his education so that he can
continue to gain knowledge.
“During high school I attended Urrbrae Agricultural High School and
completed Year 12 part-time over two years so I had time for horses. I then
completed a traineeship through the Morphettville TAFE,” he recalled.
“I spent two years working for Templewood horse riding centre before
starting at Adelaide University, and while at uni, I spent two years studying
an Advanced Diploma in Horse Husbandry and Management. In third
year, I studied a Postgraduate Bachelor in Rural Business Management at
the Roseworthy College campus.
“During this time I was competing in eventing. I also took the
opportunity to work my practical placements at Haunui Farm in New
Zealand, which was my first horse work away from competition horses
and in the Thoroughbred breeding industry. The opportunities afforded
me by the Chitty family changed the focus of my career.
“I’ve continued to study throughout my working career and also hold
a diploma in frontline management, occupational first aid, mental health
first aid and things like that.”
His time with the Chitty family at Haunui Farm, where he was assistant
yearling manager, began him on a path in the thoroughbred breeding
industry on which he continues to this day.
“From Haunui, I became yearling manager at Emirates Park
Murrurundi,” he said. “I was then stud manager at Trevannah before
I’m honoured to work with such a
great team and they make me a better horseman every day.
