When Al Yelland discov-ered his great-

grandfather was once the mayor of Peterborough, Ont., he learned a lot about his family.

Because “the more important they are, the more informa-tion there is out there about them,” he was able to follow a trail of information and trace his family back to the 1400s in Devon, England.

“The talk in our family was that we were from a Welsch background,” Yelland told KTW.

“That’s not true at all.”

“Family stories that are handed down for years and years can be disproved.”

“You find out the truth about things.”

For Yelland, presi-dent of the Kamloops Family History Society, genealogy is an addic-tive hobby.

It’s why he’s been researching his family — online and through newspaper articles, archives and word of mouth — since 1988.

“Every time I find some information, it’s tremendous. It’s like finding a treasure,” he said.

Yelland and oth-ers from the society will share their family treasures this weekend

during a conference in Kamloops.

The two-day event, which begins tomorrow at the Calvary Community Church, will include guest speakers and visitors from as far as Washington state.

Cyndi Ingle, founder of the genealogy website Cyndi’s List, will be a highlight of

the weekend.Yelland said she

likely has the most extensive cupboard of genealogy links on the Internet.

Archives in an online database

Local historians are getting the fi rst taste of what will become a feast of information as the city’s and region’s newspapers become available through an online searchable database.

It will replace a painstaking, imper-fect system of research based on volun-teers indexing newspapers by subject.

“Right now it’s in soft launch,” ac-knowledged Thompson Nicola Regional District director of libraries Marc Saun-ders.

The project, several years in the mak-ing, began earlier this month with avail-ability of Kamloops Daily News archived copies to 2001. Kamloops This Week is expected to be online in May.

The archive is presented in a clean, easy-to-search style.

“We want to do all the papers in the TNRD,” Saunders said. “We’re able to do this longer-term preservation.”

The library has in the past made avail-able online searchable stories from city newspapers through a commercial da-tabase. But, Saunders said, the service was expensive and provided text-only stories.

WHERE TO START IN TRACING FAMILY HISTORY“When I started

looking at Cyndi’s List, I think she had about 70,000 links on her site,” he said.

“Now, she’s up to over 200,000.”

Her talk, The Hidden Web: Digging Deeper, will focus on ways to conduct online research outside of Google and other tradi-tional search engines.

Also of note, an online archive of city and regional newspa-pers will be launched for public use during the conference.

The project, under-way for more than a year, is a partner-ship between the Thompson Nicola Regional District, Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops Museum and UBC.

Yelland sees the conference, which was resurrected after more than 10 years this year,

as an opportunity to pass on the genealogy “bug.”

“It’s so interesting and it doesn’t cost a lot of money,” he said.

“You can do a lot of research online for free.”

Yelland hopes for the event to be held every two years in the

future by the society, which has been around about 30 years.

For more informa-tion or to register for the conference, go online to kfhs.org.

The living and the dead

While Al Yelland rec-

ommends interviewing family members as soon as possible — while they are still alive — he recommends obituaries for tracing family history.

“There’s a lot of information found in obituaries,” he said.

Obituaries provide launch points for peo-

ple to talk to, places to research or, simply, just to provide insight into who they were.

Maybe they were a fisherman or a banker or enjoyed classical music.

“They write stories about the interests they had,” Yelland said.

For those just begin-

ning to trace their fam-ily history, it’s easy, he said.

Start with yourself and write down your birth date and mar-riage status.

Then, write down your parents names and their birth and marriage dates. Then, take it from there.

Yelland rec-ommends other announcements — anniversary, wed-dings and births.

“You can find quite a bit of informa-tion about these kind of people,” Yelland said.

“One of them may be a relative of yours.”

From page B1

Newshound includes photos, layout, adsThe newspaper archive, dubbed

Newshound, offers searchable imag-es of the papers, including photos, layout and advertising.

“The goal is to present papers for communities long term so people can reflect back on their history and have that reference point,” Saunders said.

Andrew Yarmie, head of the city’s heritage commission, has spent plenty of time thumbing through index cards at the Kamloops Museum and Archives.

“It’s important to have the news-papers to tell the stories,” he said.

“I’ve always used newspapers for every research project I’ve done.”

Yarmie said the index-based system works for news events, for example, but is impractical for larger sociological research projects.

The project began with the easy part first. For the past 15 years or so, electronic images of Kamloops news-papers have been in existence, but not readily available for research.

Saunders said the library is able to get these editions quickly online and make them searchable.

Newspapers from the 1990s from across the region will be made avail-able in the next two years.

Staff are working on digitizing

older microfilm and making images available online.

“The tricky thing for us is we’re trying to get good optical recogni-tion,” Saunders said. “We’re depen-dent on that. We’re running into film that’s really dark.”

Outside the technical problems are copyright challenges. One of the biggest treasures the library hopes to make available is the Inland Sentinel. Newshound has dates blocked out to make the Inland Sentinel available back to 1871.

When it shut the doors in the 1980s, the newspaper was owned by Thomson Corp. Saunders said the billionaire Thomson family owns its

rights and he has so far been unsuc-cessful in getting any correspon-dence returned from the Thomson family trust.

“I won’t give up on them,” he pledged.

The Merritt Herald, as well as now-closed publications from the Nicola Valley, will be part of the project.

Saunders said he also wants to digitize the Ashcroft-Cache Creek Journal, which he called “a gem.” But, those rights are owned by publisher Black Press.

Once newspapers are 80 years old, they are no longer covered by copyright law. The archive is avail-able at arch.tnrdlib.ca.

In one of Michael Mehta’s classes, stu-dents experience what he calls an inverted course.

It means watching a video he prepares on the main points of the class, doing the read-ings and maybe taking a quiz.

“And, then, the rest of the class they have time to do the real hands-on work,” said Mehta, a pro-fessor of geography and environmental studies at Thompson

Rivers University.For one group of

students, that has meant pursuing cre-ation of a community garden on the campus.

Katherine Hawrys said her group chose that goal as much out of a desire to make the campus healthier as having a keen interest in the concept.

Working alongside Hawrys are students Stephanie Yakimchuk, Lauren DiMambro, Haley Swinden, Nicole McGillvray and Emmalie Louwerse.

They have identified a couple of locations on campus with assis-

tance from horticul-ture instructor Kevin Scollon — a parking lot on the north side of the campus, a plot of land behind the Animal Health Technology Building and a space next to the Culinary Arts Building.

A survey of students resulted in 130 people expressing interest in participating in a garden and the cam-pus’ Roots and Shoots Club is moving forward with the project now that the school year is over.

A crowdsourc-ing campaign saw them top their $1,000

goal, hitting $1,500 last month.

The plan would see those using the gar-den donate a portion of their crops to local food banks — either the city’s or the one on campus.

There would be a charge to have a plot in the garden, Hawrys said.

The group consid-ered creating it as a co-operative but, in researching communi-ty gardens at other uni-versities, the students discovered their expe-rience showed more commitment if a gar-dener has paid some of

their own money. The plan will be

going to the board of governors for approval — not because it’s necessary, but because that kind of blessing will help the group see their plan through to earth dug and herbs and vegetables planted, Hawrys said.

Mehta said watch-ing the student groups

pursue their own interests — all within the context of learning — has been “a real fun ride.”

The groups are applying the knowl-edge they’re learning to real-life situations, co-creating sustainable environmental projects and are taking respon-sibility for the learning, Mehta said.

They are learning

how to finance their projects and commu-nicate their informa-tion to the community outside their class-room.

The goal, he said, is to send students out into the working world not just with a degree and a transcript, but with a large skill set that could see them pursuing any career they choose.

Gardening workshop on Saturday at centre

As it continues to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Volunteer Kamloops is thrilled to introduce Mary Baker as the Volunteer Recognition Award recipient for the month of April.

Baker has split vol-unteering efforts over more than 10 years across three different organizations: RCMP Victims’ Services, CanGo Grannies and the Kamloops Hospice Association. She has contributed to both local and global communities through these activities and, as a result, has had a direct impact on mak-ing Kamloops a better place to live.

Mary has volunteered with CanGo Grannies since January 2007. The grannies raise money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation for the many grassroots projects they support in sub-Saharan Africa, helping grandmothers raise their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren. Baker and the CanGo Grannies recently brought Barbara Coloroso to the Tournament Capital to promote more effec-tive ways to prevent and/or deal with bullying.

Baker has also volunteered with the Kamloops RCMP Victims’ Services program for almost 11 years, averaging about 80 hours per month.

She regularly shares her experiences with new volunteers and is always there to listen and sup-port others in whatever way they need.

While she waited for victims’ services train-ing, she volunteered with community policing in North Kamloops.

Hospice is another passion for Baker. She started volunteering in January of 2003

and visited people in their homes until the hos-pice house opened in February 2004.

You can usually find her there on Fridays, unless she has another commitment.

To find volunteer opportunities like Baker’s, visit Volunteer Kamloops online at

volunteerkamloops.org or in person at 705 Seymour St. to meet with a program co-ordinator

and receive a personalized assessment.

Several alumni and some guest perform-ers will celebrate the past decade of summer presentations at Prince Charles Park — which, this year, will see the troupe present The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and The Shakespeare Show.

Vancouver actor

Mack Gordon — twice nominated for Jessie Awards for outstanding performance — will play the outlaw who robs from the rich and gives to the poor.

He’s worked mostly with Pacific Theatre but had the role of Antonio in X-Fest’s 2010 presentation of 12th Night, or What You Will.

Joining Gordon in the forest of Nottingham will be Stephen Sawka as the sheriff, Andrew Cooper as Guy of Gisborne, Kelsey Gilker as Maid Marion, Wyatt Purcha as Little John, Dusan

SHANGHAI — Ford showed off its new Taurus and Nissan unveiled a midsize sedan designed for China at the recent Shanghai Auto Show that highlighted the commercial resurgence of lower-priced Chinese auto brands.

Competition in China is intensifying as economic growth slows and more manufacturers pile into the world’s biggest auto market by number of vehicles sold.

Global automakers are spending heavily to appeal to Chinese tastes and local brands are rolling out lower-cost versions of SUVs and other popular vehicles.

Ford Motor Co. used the Shanghai show for the global debut of its lat-est Taurus, reflecting the event’s rapid rise to become one of the industry’s most important showcases.

General Motors Co., Mercedes Benz and other global brands also unveiled new models or versions modified for China.

Features on the Taurus, Ford’s first full-size sedan in China, include massage units in the back seat.

That is aimed at buyers who have drivers that ride in the back — a market niche that increasingly is driving automakers to design bigger, more com-fortable rear seats.

“Even though the mar-ket is slowing down, we are still growing,’’ said Ford CEO Mark Fields.

This year’s show high-lights renewed strength for Chinese automakers following two tough years spent losing market share to foreign rivals.

Local competitors have spent heavily to roll out new models.

Brands including SUV producer Great Wall Motor and Geely Holding, owner of Sweden’s Volvo Cars, reported first-quarter sales gains of up to 70 per cent.

That helped to boost the market share of Chinese automakers so far this year to 43 per cent from last year’s 38 per cent, accord-ing to LMC Automotive.

Geely reported the num-ber of vehicles sold under its own brand jumped 57 per cent in the first quarter.

“The improvement in Geely’s performance has to do with the competitive strength of our new prod-

ucts,’’ said Geely chairman Li Shufu.

Still, Shufu was cau-tious about saying Chinese brands were doing better than global rivals.

He said the smaller scale of sales by Chinese brands meant any change looked better in percentage terms.

For some global brands, including Volkswagen AG, sales were flat or even declined due to their emphasis on higher-priced vehicles with growth in low to mid-single digits.

That was a sobering development for automak-ers that are counting on China to drive future rev-enue.

“Market growth has come to a halt for inter-national brands,’’ said Bernstein Research in a report Monday.

“Chinese brands are staging a comeback.’’

The president of VW China, Jochem Heizmann, said the company failed to keep pace with overall market growth because it lacks products in the bud-get SUV range, where sales doubled.

He said VW is working on “very concrete projects’’ to develop smaller SUVs

and budget-priced cars for China.

GM’s lineup included the Buick Verano, a sport sedan, and a plug-in hybrid Cadillac CTS. Baojun, a low-priced Chinese brand made by GM and state-owned local part-ner Shanghai Automotive Industries Corp., debuted an SUV, the 560.

“Chinese consumers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and, if you look at the market, they are spoiled for choice,’’ said Matt Tsien, president of GM China.

Great Wall recently debuted the H6 Coupe and showed the H8 SUV under its Haval brand.

The popularity of its SUVs have helped trans-form it into one of China’s most successful auto brands.

The company says it hopes to sell 10,000 units a month of both of its new vehicles.

“It will propel the Haval brand to a new level,’’ said Zhang Yun, a marketing consultant for Great Wall.

SUVs, popular with Chinese drivers who value their image of safety in the country’s chaotic traffic,

accounted for 26 per cent of all passenger vehicles sold in the first quarter, the highest proportion of any major market.

“We predict that this year will be an SUV feeding frenzy,’’ said Ola Kallenius, head of marketing for Mercedes Benz, which dis-played an SUV Coupe con-cept on Sunday.

The abrupt deceleration in China’s economic growth has dragged down auto sales growth and prompted buyers to shift to lower-priced models.

Growth slowed to seven per cent in the first three months of this year, its lowest quarterly expansion since the aftermath of the 2008 global crisis.

That still is higher than the low single-digit growth forecast for the United States and Europe this year, but well below China’s peak of 14.2 per cent in 2007.

Auto sales growth slowed to nine per cent in the first quarter of this year, down sharply from 2009’s peak above 40 per cent.

Growth is forecast to cool further this year to seven or eight per cent and to level off at about five per

cent in coming years. The deceleration to what

Chinese leaders term the “new normal’’ of slower but more sustainable economic growth has cooled corpo-rate profits and the real estate industry.

The ruling Communist Party is pressing companies to boost wages in an effort to promote growth driven by consumer spending instead of trade and invest-ment.

Nissan Motor Co. unveiled the Lannia, a midsize sedan designed for Chinese buyers.

The company, which has made China a pillar of its global turnaround strategy, calls the Lannia its first offering for the country’s “youth generation.’’

For the SUV market, Nissan announced its Murano hybrid.

GM, Ford, BMW, Ford’s Lincoln luxury brand and other automakers also dis-played SUVs, many of them offering hybrid-electric versions.

Geely also displayed its Borui sedan, its first model developed using Volvo technology following its 2010 acquisition of the Swedish company.

New models unveiled in China’s crowded auto market JOE MCDONALD THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The 2016 Ford Taurus was recently shown at the Shanghai Auto Show.
