Next, circle Nov 3 to Nov. 12 on your calendar because that’s when Western Canada Theatre bring Farr to the city for Tuesdays with Morrie.

Farr has been travelling the theatre circuit with the play and

he has been lauded not only for the humour he brings to the role, but the heartbreak, as well.

For those who have not read the Mitch Albom book or seen the movie. Tuesdays with Morrie is the story of Morrie, a retired sociology professor, and a jour-nalist and former student who has lost track of his favourite teacher.

One day, he sees Morrie being interviewed on television and reconnects.

The story is based on Albom’s own experiences.

WCT artistic director Daryl

Cloran said getting Farr and the play to Kamloops wasn’t particu-larly difficult.

Once he had the contact infor-mation, obtained from a friend with the theatre in Hamilton, Ont., “I just had to call his agent in New York and, after I explained where Kamloops was, they were eager to come here.”

Cloran’s also excited to be using a third venue for Morrie.

Cloran said he loves the play, loves the writ-ing and loves the device of going backward.

It was high on the list of plays he wanted to bring to Kamloops.

“It’s just such a good story and the tension is just dripping in it,” Cloran said.

It will be done in a theatre-in-the-round for-mat at Pavilion, bring-ing the audience into the work.

It runs from Sept. 22 to Oct. 8.

Next up is Letters From Wingfield Farm by Dan Needles, a humorous visit with Walt Wingfield, who wants to live a more stripped-down, less complicated life.

It’s a one-man play based on letters to the editor Walt writes to the Larkspur weekly paper.

The play is being peformed by a touring company, which will give WCT time to pre-pare for its Christmas show, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, the first musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd-Webber ever produced publicly.

“It’s a great piece of Canadiana,” Cloran said of Wingfield, “that has seven spinoffs.

“Actually, I’m sur-prised it’s never made its way through here before.”

Commissioned by a school in Britain as a pop cantata for its choir to perform, the work expanded into the musi-cal it is today.

There is little spo-ken word in it; instead, using many musical styles, it takes the audience basically through the Bible’s Old Testament.

It’s a big production, Cloran said — “big budget, big cast” — but he believes it will resaonate with the com-munity.

Dreamcoat runs from Nov. 24 to Dec. 4.

Lorne Cardinal, who co-starred in Thunderstruck last year, returns in For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again by Michel Tremblay.

It’s also based on true life, with Tremblay telling the story of the memories of his mother, Nana.

It’s been called a powerful story of how Nan influenced her son in so many ways with her stories — ultimately creating a man whose stock and trade is sto-ries.

Cloran called it a great Canadian dramatic piece “that is also real-ly, really funny.”

It runs from Jan. 26 to Feb. 4.

On. Feb. 23, WCT presents Noises Off by Michael Frayn.

Again inspired by a real experience, Frayn’s

play resulted from a time he was watching Lynn Redgrave acting in a farce he had written for her, Chinamen.

From his vantage point in the wings, he decided to write a simi-lar farce from that view-point, creating a play within a play that starts at the dress rehearsal, goes through to the matinee and wraps up at the end of a 10-week run.

Partnerships important Through it all are scenes of

chaos, slapstick, turmoil and disorder.

It starts what Cloran called the three first ladies of WCT, Janet Michael, whose husband, David Ross, was artistic direc-tor for years; Anita Wittenberg, whose husband, Jeremy Tow, succeeded Ross; and Cloran’s wife, Holly Lewis.

Ubuntu — The Cape Town Project opens on March 29 and continues to April 7.

Cloran premiered this play, a story not just of politics in South Africa, but the tale of two people, worlds apart, both deal-ing with family ghosts (Ubuntu refers to the South African belief humanity is joined in a shared community.)

It was important for him to bring it to Kamloops for many reasons, Cloran said.

First, it gives the theatre audience a chance to see the kind of work he has done in the past, so they can get to know him as an artist.

The play itself is important to him for the message it brings.

It also will see South African actors take the stage in a new theatrical partnership.

And, after its Kamloops run, Cloran will take the play on the road to Calgary and Vancouver for premieres there.

The final play of the season is The 25th Annual Putnum

County Spelling Bee, a musical by William Finn.

The play is set as a spell-ing bee, Cloran said, with six youngsters vying for the top prize.

Joining the six, however, will be four members of the audi-ence each night.

Each night, people willing to pretty much improvise on stage as the play goes on can sign up.

Cloran has seen it done this way before and said it’s delight-ful not only for bringing the community into it so deeply, but by the way these folks get into the spirit, singing and dancing along with the actors.

“It’s just a lovely piece of community engagement.”

WCT is also partnering with the theatre-arts department at Thompson Rivers University on the production in a move Cloran hopes to develop even further.

Students involved will get credit for their involvement.

He noted there has been a TRU-WCT partnership in exis-tence to a degree and he hopes “to take it a further step.”

Spelling Bee runs from April 19 to May 5.

As Tow and WCT general manager Lori Marchand did in recent years, Cloran also wants to use Pavilion Theatre more.

He’s putting a classic drama and a fun musical in it as bookends to the season to help remove the theatre’s image in

some minds as “the place where the new work you don’t know goes.”

The goal is to see Pavilion and Sagebrush — a theatre many find more friendly and accommodating — become interchangeable in the city’s view.

As for his first WCT season, Cloran said he’s testing the boundaries a bit, but is confi-dent of success because he’s had the past year to get to know the city, its acting community and what it is capable of pro-ducing.

The season “plays to some of our strengths,” while cover-ing off all genre to appeal to the widest audience, he said.

There are a variety of ticket options and packages available.

Single tickets go on sale in September.

For ticket information, con-tact the Kamloops Live Box Office, 1025 Lorne St., 250-374-5483, kamloopslive.com.

Spring CleaningStreet Sweeping Notice

Starting mid-March, weather permitting, City crews will begin spring sweeping of streets in the valley bottom and working into the higher elevations throughout the city. The Spring Sweeping program on average requires 6 to 8 weeks to complete.

In an e!ort to reduce sweeping time and costs, signs will be posted in the areas that are being swept advising the public not to park on the street. Some high density areas will have parking restrictions posted and/or notices delivered in advance of sweeping, for example, downtown east.

Residents who wish to sweep the area in front of their property are advised to remove the pile of sand accumulated as these piles can damage a sweeper, and operators are instructed to swerve around such piles.

Your cooperation is appreciated. Inquiries can be made by calling 250-828-3461.

MY SECRET IS OUT.Although to be honest, it

was about as well-concealed as Brussels sprouts hiding in

cheese sauce. When the head librarian made the intro-

ductions at my book launch a short while back, she considered the bit of biogra-phy I’d offered.

And then, with a grin, explained to those assem-bled that I’d come a long way since my first published story.

I sure hope it’s true that there’s

a big difference between my first, broth-thin, attempts at storytelling, and the ones in

Mennonites Don’t Dance. Even though food and farms continue to be themes.

My first published story, first two stories, you see, appeared in editions of Chicken Soup for the Soul and were reprinted in Women’s World, and yet a third feel-good publication after that (the name of which eludes me now). Which means, while I tend to look back and cringe a little at those first offerings, it’s unlikely I’ll ever have that many copies of anything in print again.

Ever! It’s also likely that, no matter what I

write from now on, whenever my mom talks to my Kindergarten teacher, second grade babysitter or pediatrician about what I’ve written, those two editions of “Soup” will be plonked into their hands with motherly pride. All while her daughter pulls her hat down low.

Oh well. Motherly pride is always nice. As are recipes for chicken, souped or oth-erwise. To which end I keep several small

buckets of home made chicken stock in the freezer at any given time. And a good thing I do.

Just yesterday, while I was preparing for a repeat appearance, this time for the library’s 75th Anniversary, my chef husband called to say he was coming home early, and did we have any chicken soup or ginger ale handy?

No, and no. Nor was there much I could do until after I came home.

Off I went, leaving my ailing man in the company of a remote control.

Being the kind of person who comes down with a bug about twice a decade, Dean does not do sick well. He takes it personally when his white blood cells have to be called to go on the offensive.

So, while stock I have in plenty, by the time I was on my way home later in the afternoon, I knew that a stop at the grocery store, for a plastic container of their fresh-made chicken noodle, was the best I could

offer in a hurry.I’m afraid it only made matters worse.Today, however, is another day. There’s stock thawed and warming on the

back of the stove. A freshly roasted bird (the carcass of which will form the basis of my next stock) sits ready to join some carrots and noodles. In short enough order it will all become a light and fresh tasting chicken soup. One to erase the effects of the slimy, slightly burnt one from the store.

Hopefully it will prove to be good for what ails.

If nothing else, though, there’s a very good chance it will be good for the soul.

At least that’s what my mom, and a whole series of feel-good books, have to say about the matter.

In a large pot, heat stock over medium-high, bringing it to a simmer. Add carrots and simmer until just tender.

At the same time, cook fusilli to al dente in boil-ing, salted water; drain. Shred chicken meat and add, along with pasta, to stock. Season to taste while bringing soup just to a simmer.

As soon as it simmers, turn off heat, add herbs, and serve.

Cook’s note: The pasta in this soup needn’t be fusilli. Any shape that’s not too large or long will work, including egg noodles. For something a little different, add cooked long grain rice (such as bas-mati) instead.

Tough times call for tough measures, Capricorn. Cut back every way you can, and your bottom line will improve. A mess at work needs cleaning up.

Trust is everything, so make sure you keep your end of the bargain. A breech in etiquette at work is no reason to get upset. Overlook it, Aquarius, and move on.

Economical issues rear their ugly head, and you are asked to take on extra responsibilities for no compensation. Be gracious about it, Pisces, and rewards will come.

Moments to yourself are rare these days, so when the opportunity arises, make sure you take advantage of it, Aries. A furry friend brings joy to your life.

Pay those naysayers no heed, Taurus. Press on, and you will win the race. Riveting tales from yesteryear keep the mood light at home.

Peace finally reigns at home. Take everyone out to celebrate, Gemini. A project at work is interrupted, giving you the time needed to refine it.

The announcement of changes at work is no reason to fret, Cancer. They will be for the better. A friend keeps their promise and arrives on time.

You are not a pushover by any means, Leo, so why are you sitting there and taking it? Stand up for yourself and prepare to be amazed.

Tensions mount over money. Bring in a pro for an unbiased view, Virgo. A mission in organization is accomplished with ease, thanks to a friend.

Uh-oh, Libra. The to-do list expands. Attack it in order of importance. A novel idea deserves applause, no matter who is behind it. Give them their due.

The debate continues at work. Adding fuel to the fire is not a good idea. Take a step back, Scorpio, and look for a compromise amidst it all.

Opportunities are ripe for the picking, Sagittarius. Don’t miss out! A milestone is reached at work. Mark the occasion with some delightful treats.

The Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism will book-end April, Autism Awareness Month, with two events to raise awareness about autism and funds for the centre.

Autism activ-ist Jerry Newport speaks today (April 1) at a dinner event at the Grand Hall at Thompson Rivers University.

Newport, whose life was portrayed in

the movie Mozart and the Whale, gives frank — but humourous — pesentations on living with autism.

The movie tells the story os his relation-ship with his wife, Mary.

The two both have Asperger’s syndrome, one of the points on the autism spectrum.

The centre ends the month with the Chris

Rose Walk for Autism on Saturday, April 30.

Registration at NorKam secondary will begin at 9 a.m., with free coffee and fruit.

The walk will start at 10 a.m., with a cir-cuit around McArthur Island.

Following the walk, participants can enjoy entertainment and purchase lunch from

the North Kamloops Lions.

Registration and pledge forms can be picked up from infor-mation tables at Save-on-Foods on April 2 and the North Shore Safeway on April 16.

The tables will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The forms can also be downloaded online at chrisrosecentre.com.

The Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism strives to pro-vide an environment that will enable all students achieve their social, emotional, aca-demic and vocational goals with the support of parents and caregiv-ers.

The centre believes all students should have the opportunity, whenever possible,

to integrate into their community schools and to become fully participating members of their community.

The centre works with children on a one-to-one or one-to-two basis to instruct them in life skills, play, social integra-tion, pre-academic and academic training in addition to other thera-pies.

Thousands living with Parkinson’s disease

Bill’s wife noticed he was holding his left arm close to his chest.

His right arm swung naturally when he walked, but his left arm didn’t move.

Sandy noticed his speech was slurred and his voice very soft.

Matthew was stiff and shaky. Frank thrashed about in his sleep. Fran and Mary both observed their handwriting

becoming smaller and almost illegible. Alex had trouble getting up from a chair. Katherine and Rendy developed action-induced

foot dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions causing inward and downward twisting of the foot) while jogging.

All these Kamloops residents have since been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and are mem-bers of the Kamloops Parkinson Awareness Group.

April is awareness month for Parkinson’s disease, as well as the birth month of Dr. James Parkinson, for whom the disease was named.

The Parkinson Society British Columbia (PSBC) says there are at least 11,000 people in B.C. living with the disease.

“The society’s services include information, resources, and education for people living with Parkinson’s” said Diane Robinson, CEO. “We are reaching out so that we can help as many people as possible in BC and let them know that they are not alone in dealing with Parkinson’s.”

Parkinson’s is the second most-common degen-erative neurological disorder, after Alzheimer’s.

Its symptoms are many and include tremor, rigidity, postural instability, difficulty talking, walk-ing and swallowing, reduced facial expression, depression and dementia.

It can strike anyone – women and men of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles.

There is no known cure. For more information, online to parkinson.bc.ca.

WE GET LOTS OF QUES-TIONS

at CMHA, so we thought we would try to give you some infor-mation about mental health, the brain and the mind that answers the most-common questions we get.

If we failed to answer your question, you can still write to us at [email protected] as we always love to hear from you.

Did you know?! Bananas contain

a natural antidepressant chemical that stimu-lates the production of serotonin and dop-amine, the same neu-rotransmitters affected by Prozac, which improve one’s mood.

! Of all the senses, smell is most closely linked to memory and is a powerful cause of flashbacks, anxiety attacks and other symp-toms.

! Identical twins have brain-wave pat-terns that are almost exactly the same.

! Most dreams last five to 20 minutes and the average person has more than 1,460 dreams a year.

! Of the 10 lead-ing causes of disability worldwide, five are mental disorders.

! By 2020, it is estimated depressive illnesses will become the leading cause of disease burden in developed countries like Canada.

! Less than four per cent of medical-research funding goes

to mental illness.! The Business and

Economic Roundtable on Mental Health evaluated the impact of depression on business productivity, estimat-ing economic costs of mental illness are 14 per cent of corporate Canada’s net operating profits.

! Thomas Edison, the light-bulb inventor, was afraid of the dark.

! People who are afraid of flying should consider that more peo-ple are killed annually by donkeys than die in air crashes.

! The average per-son laughs 13 times a day.

! Mental illness is the most-prevalent health problem in Canada.

It is more common than cancer, lung dis-ease or heart disease combined.

! The prison sys-tem is the largest sup-plier of mental-health services.

In 2006, 56 per cent of prison inmates and 64 per cent of jail inmates had a diagnos-able mental illness.

! More than half of students 14 or older who suffer from a men-tal disorder will drop out of high school.

! From all the oxygen that a human breathes, 20 per cent goes to the brain.

! Women are twice

as likely to be diag-nosed with depression as men.

! It is not possible to tickle yourself.

The cerebellum warns the rest of the brain that you are about to tickle yourself.

Thanks for reading Mental Health Matters and remember to laugh because, as Bob Hope used to remind us, “A

sense of humour is good for you. Have you ever

KIBIHT

KIBIHT: Rich in history

THE SCHEDULEThe 2011 Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament schedule is online now at kibiht.com

The inaugural Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament was played in 1969, with teams participating from North America and Europe.

Since Bud Fraser and Eldon Dever founded the tourney over 40 years, some of the best bantam teams on the planet have flocked to Kamloops on a yearly basis.

In the 1970s, it was the likes of Eddie Johnston, Brad Maxwell, Ryan

Walter, Glenn Anderson, Jari Kurri and Mario Lemieux taking the ice in the River City.

The 1980s saw Cliff Ronning, Kevin Hatcher, Mark Recchi, Glen Wesley, Joe Sakic, Rod Brind’Amour, Mike Modano and Adam Foote in action at KIBIHT.

Competing for the Kamloops cup in the 1990s were talents such as Mike Peca, Brendan Morrison, Darcy Tucker, Sergei

Fedorov, Patrick Marleau, Scott Hannan, Mike Comrie and Vincent Lecavalier.

Stars that appeared in Kamloops this decade include Ryan Kesler, Dion Phaneuf, Patrick Kane, Kyle Turris, Jordan Eberle and Evander Kane.

This year’s rendition of KIBIHT, which runs from April 6 to April 10, will give spectators a chance to watch a new batch of future greats as they make names for themselves on the ice.

There are not many better places than KIBIHT for bantam-aged hockey players to get noticed by junior-hockey scouts.

“I can tell you, based on business cards, the last two years every Western Hockey League team has had somebody here sometime during the tour-nament,” said Willy Saari, KIBIHT chairman.

“Plus, the [Kootenay International Junior Hockey League] scouts. Plus the B.C Hockey League scouts and player agents are also in atten-dance throughtout the week.”

Over 75 scout-ing packages were handed out at last year’s KIBIHT, Saari said.

“It’s a top-end

tournament at the end of the year to wrap up the season.

“For some of the play-ers, it’s the last time they play minor hockey before going on to junior.”

KIBIHT

A minute with the chairman of the tourney

The Kamloops International Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament (KIBIHT) is a big deal and organizers work almost year-round to make sure it goes off without a hitch.

Leading the way is KIBIHT chair-man Willy Saari, a Kamloops product who knows what the tourney means to the River City.

“With the old organizing committee stepping back, I wanted to make sure KIBIHT stayed in Kamloops and the history stays here,” said Saari, who runs H.I.S. Ventures, a firefighting and tree-removal company.

Saari and his committee, which includes website manager Rob Fryer, head of sponsorship Jim MacKenzie, director of officiating and security Jason Rende, treasurer Ian Shaw-MacLaren and media liaison Gerard Hayes, took over after the 2008 tourna-ment when the preceding organizers

stepped down.Saari’s team meets monthly from

September until Christmas and twice-monthly from Christmas until puck drop.

In addition to the organizing commit-tee, a volunteer team of about 50 people perform various duties throughout the five-day tournament, which runs from April 6 to April 10 at Brock Arena, Interior Savings Centre and McArthur Island Sports Centre.

Volunteers can sign up for duty online at kibiht.com.

Saari was never good enough to play in the tournament, he said, but he did don the stripes for about 15 years.

This is Saari’s third year as the tourna-ment’s chair.

Watching young players develop and attract the attention of scouts has kept him coming back.

“It’s an excellent hockey development tournament,” he said.

“It’s also the last tournament before the Western Hockey League bantam draft.”

TRAVEL

Wells Gray Tours staff believe every destination has a story.

Now, they plan to prove it — with the toss of a dart.

Tour company owner Roland Neave will toss a dart on a map of North American on Monday, April 4, during the city’s annual travel show at the North Shore Community Centre, and then plan a tour to that destination.

“The idea is a takeoff from Steve Hartman’s Everybody Has a Story,” said Neave, referring to the jour-nalist from the CBS Evening News who ran the feature for more than seven years.

Hartman would throw a dart at a map of America, travel to wher-ever the dart landed, randomly pick someone from the phone book and do a story on someone in that household.

Wells Gray Tours has been look-ing for ideas to engage its more-adventurous clientele.

Twice a year, the company offers mystery tours, where trav-ellers sign up and pay for a trip where they do not know where they are going.

With Every Destination Has a Story, Neave is counting on appeal-ing to the same sense of adventure.

FAITH

Your emotions: Holy or hollow?ONE TRANS-

LATION OF 1 Corinthians 2:4 reads:

And my language and my message were not set forth in persuasive (entic-ing and plausible) words of wisdom, but they were in demonstration of the Spirit and power (a proof by the Spirit and power of God operatng on me and stirring in the minds of my hearers the most holy emotions and thus persuading them).

Emotions are part of being human.

Emotions are neither good nor bad in them-selves.

How we choose to respond to our emotions is crucial.

Just because we are emotional creatures is no excuse for uncontrolled emotional responses.

The truth is, we do not have to be controlled by our emotions.

We can choose to fix our mind on the truth (obedience), take every thought captive to the truth and allow God to sanctify and control our

emotions.Actually, it goes back

to surrender — giving God my emotions for worship, not worry; comforting others, not controlling others; feel-ing the pain of another and responding with care and compassion.

What emotions have been stirred within us by the recent world events — holy or hollow?

Holy emotions are stirred from a broken heart, crying out in des-peration for a holy and faithful God.

These have little regard for self.

When these have reached their ultimate goal, they have become God’s way of complete

surrender evidenced through complete bro-kenness — an emptying of ourselves, our wants, our needs and our suf-fering.

Hollow emotions are a desperate attempt to be seen, heard and to manipulate others.

They cry out for attention from others and from God but, because they are self-focussed, He cannot respond.

It may sound like a cry to God, but He is not the focus.

The situation, the person, or whatever has caused this grief has become the controlling force.

People with hollow emotions are still look-ing for “It” (the circum-stance, person etc.) to bring relief.

They are wanting God to change “It” so they won’t have to suffer any longer.

This cry out is for self, not for surrender.

Touch me, comfort me, love me and so on.

God does want to answer our pleas and He

is close to those of a bro-ken heart.

But He is not inter-ested in simply giving us relief, but in chang-ing our focus, in turning these hollow emotions into holy ones — con-trolled, sanctified and surrendered to Him for His purpose.

Author and speaker Larry Crabb said: “Recovery from pain is absorbing an increasing share of the church’s energy . . . we have become committed to relieving the pain behind our problems rather than using our pain to wrestle more passionately with the character and purpose of God. Feeling better has become more impor-tant than finding God.”

God desires every-thing about our life to be under His control, including our emotions.

They are to be no lon-ger controlled by people or circumstances but must be surrendered to His control.

Growing in Christian life entails that we are to be conformed to the

image of Christ. Therefore, my reac-

tions, my emotional responses are to be in line with His character.

God, through the guidance and teaching of the Holy Spirit, wants to sanctify and set apart my emotions for His good purposes.

Here’s a sampler of general differences between holy and hollow emotions.

Holy emotions: ! Surrender and sub-

mit through pain to God;! Cry out for healing;! Produce faith;! Speak sincerely

even through tears;! Confess adoration;! Declare God’s

righteousness;! Seek comfort;! Soar through

prayer and worship.

Hollow emotions! Scream and spit

venom of blame, fear and doubt;

! Cry out to be heard;

! Produce fear;! Speak suspiciously

and cynically through tears;

! Confess adamant demands;

! Declare the per-son’s rights;

! Seek control;! Sink through wor-

ries.In his book The

Purpose Driven Life, author Rick Warren wrote:

“Whenever you are hurt by someone, you have a choice to make: Will I use my energy and emotions for retaliation or for resolution? You can’t do both!”

We need help in the area of expressing our emotions.

We need the right response when we are faced with traumatic cir-cumstances, daily living and situations that arise from relational conflicts.

The solution is to keep our minds renewed through the Word of God, especially by such passages as Isaiah 26:3-4; 50:10, Philippians 4:4-8 and Colossians 3:1-4.

Here is a suggested

prayer to confront and handle emotions in holy ways:

“Thank You, Father, for the gift of emo-tions — for allowing us to experience joy and delight in what is good and even for the ability to experience pain.

“I acknowledge that, in this fallen world, pain is an inescapable real-ity. I confess that I often choose to believe and act on my feeling without stopping to consider whether or not those feel-ings are based on truth.

“I frequently allow my responses to be controlled by how I am feeling and by my cir-cumstances rather than by Your Word and Your Spirit.

“Thank You that regardless of how I feel or what my emotions tell me, Your truth is absolute and unchanging.

“Help me to trust You in the midst of any cir-cumstance. Amen.”

OBITUARIES AND IN MEMORIAM

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fi elds of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush Of beautiful birds in circling fl ight.

I am the start-shine of the night. I am in the fl owers that bloom, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there – I did not die.
