AT A GLANCE: 2015 NISSAN ROGUE First introduced for the 2008 model year,

the Nissan Rogue has become a key player in the highly competitive compact SUV market — addressing both the functional and emotional needs of buyers while offer-ing great value.

Rogue challenges convention with bold emotive styling, a premium interior created with comfort and multi-tasking in mind and an array of available affordable technolo-gies.

Thanks to its improved interior packag-ing efficiency, Rogue offers optional three-

row/seven-passenger seating. Among the many interior highlights are

the exceptional passenger and cargo flex-ibility with its innovative EZ Flex seating system.

The 2015 Rogue also offers an innovative, divide-n-hide cargo system that provides 18 adjustable variations (two-row models) between the cargo and occupant areas — including out-of-sight storage and a lower deck to handle taller items.

“Like every Nissan, Rogue is designed to energize owners’ lives by not only meeting

their expected needs, but by going beyond the norm with features such as the Around View Monitor that helps make parking less stressful,” said Steven Rhind, Director, Marketing, Nissan Canada Inc.

“With Rogue, as we’ve done with the Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and Versa Note before it, we’re bringing a new level of affordable technologies and innovations to a segment looking for fresh ideas.”

Assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee, the 2015 Nissan Rogue is the first vehicle to utilize the new jointly developed Nissan/

Renault Common Module Family (CMF) platform architecture.

The added efficiencies provided by the joint development allow Nissan to deliver unprecedented value in the seg-ment.

Rogue is one of a family of Nissan global compact crossovers, along with the European version, called the Nissan X-TRAIL.

As high-volume global growth prod-ucts, Rogue and X-TRAIL are available in 190 countries around the world.

2015 Model2015 Rogue features premium

right-sized exterior, roomy and inviting interior, easily con gu-rable passenger/cargo space and features designed to enhance con dent driving

There’s more to towing than hitching a trailer and hitting the open road.

A number of factors come into play when towing cargo or another vehicle, including the towing capac-ity of the vehicle doing the hauling.

The following are some safety tips for road trippers hitting the road with trailer in tow.

Tow vehiclesWhile many vehicles

have towing capabilities, not all of those vehicles are necessarily right for the job.

Review the towing capac-ities of various vehicles depending on the type of trailer that will be towed.

A larger, more powerful vehicle may be necessary if you will be towing some-thing large and heavy, such as a boat or a recreational vehicle.

You may need more horsepower to maintain a safe driving speed when towing especially heavy cargo.

EquipmentDifferent manufactur-

ers offer towing packages

equipped to work in concert with your vehicle.

Towing packages may include certain types of hitches, batteries, flasher systems, extended-view side mirrors, and even special axles and tires.

In many areas, a trailer with a loaded weight of more than 1,500 pounds requires a separate brak-ing system and a break-away switch located on the tongue of the trailer that activates the trailer brakes in the event it separates from the tow vehicle.

Having the right equip-ment can mean the differ-ence between safely towing cargo and getting in an accident.

AbilityHaving a lot of power

and the right equipment is not enough to safely tow cargo. Recklessness on the road, which includes driv-ing over the speed limit, is a recipe for an accident.

It typically takes time and some practice for driv-ers to grow accustomed to driving while towing cargo. Driving while towing cargo requires that drivers

maneuver their vehicles differently than they would in more typical conditions, and that they drive at slower speeds while leaving room for a larger turning radius. In addition, drivers must accommodate for the extra weight when braking.

Vehicle checkVerifying that the trailer

hitch is secure is not the only inspection drivers must conduct before hitting the open road. The vehicle doing the towing should be serviced, and any repairs should be made. Check fluid levels, particularly the transmission fluid.

In addition, make sure the water level in the bat-tery is acceptable and have the motor oil changed if it is nearing its mileage limit.

It’s also a good idea to replace the air filter, exam-ine the tires for adequate tread and test the brakes.

When the trip begins, give your vehicle and the hitch a once-over to double-check that everything is in working order. This can be done during service station stops along the trip.

TOW CARGO SAFELY

The right set of tiresDrivers rarely think of the tires on their

vehicles until they have a flat. But the type of tires on your vehicle can impact its per-formance. When choosing tires for their vehicles, drivers should consider a host of factors, including the terrain and driving conditions vehicles are likely to encounter.

Understanding tires and what makes some a better fit than others for certain vehicles can make for safe driving and improved handling.

All-season tiresThe most common type of tire and

arguably the best known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equipped with these tires, which are designed to be versatile enough to grip the road in various conditions. They are commonly made of a harder rubber that will not wear out quickly and will retain their tread. Most day-to-day driving can be done on all-season tires.

High-performance tiresPeople who live in dry climates or drive

sports and racing cars can benefit from high-performance tires. These tires are specifically designed to grip the road better and offer superior handling under higher speeds. Because high-performance tires are made of a softer rubber compared to standard tires, they will not last as long as all-season tires.

Snow tiresPeople who live in snowy, icy condi-

tions will benefit from the use of snow tires. These tires are designed with special treads

to offer more traction in slippery condi-tions. The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible even at extremely low temperatures. Winter tires are best reserved for extreme weather and not used all season long because they will wear out more quickly than others. They may not have the same level of traction on clear roads. In some cases, winter tires may have metal studs included to enhance traction in icy situations. People who do not want to switch tires when cold weather arrives sometimes invest in snow chains that improve traction on standard tires.

Mud TiresMuddy areas can be just as slippery as

snowy conditions. Mud tires are designed similarly to snow tires but will have extra grooves and a tread pattern that facilitates movement of mud away from the tires and road. Mud tires may be wider than standard tires as well.

Truck TiresDrivers of trucks or sport-utility vehicles

often need special truck tires. These tires can better handle the weight and size of a larger vehicle. Many drivers stick with the type of tire that originally came with their truck. Drivers who like to go off-roading may need an all-terrain tire to offer more traction when climbing hills or traversing different conditions.

It can be easy to overlook the impor-tance of tires, but tires help vehicles remain on the road and can affect mileage, maneu-verability and safety.

The new 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HDs are engineered to be stronger, smarter and more confident than ever.

“Heavy-duty pickups are tools that people use to tow heavy trail-ers and haul big loads,” said Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer.

“A great tool like the new Silverado HD pickup doesn’t just get the job done, it makes the work easier, and helps you feel more confident tackling the really tough jobs.”

Updates for the 2015 model year include:

All-new exterior styling with enhanced cooling air flow, which enables Silverado’s 6.6-litre Duramax turbo diesel and 6.0-litre Vortec V-8 to better maintain full power, even under heavy loads and high ambient temperatures.

Integrated cruise control, auto grade braking and diesel exhaust braking (on diesel models) that help make tough towing easier.

A 6.0L bi-fuel V-8, which can run on either gasoline or com-pressed natural gas, will be avail-able on regular-cab, crew-cab and new double-cab Silverado 2500

and 3500 models.Standard StabiliTrak with trailer

sway control on all models includ-ing 3500 duallies.

All new cabs and interiors that provide increased space and com-fort, with extensive storage space tailored to the way customers use full-size trucks.

Chevrolet MyLink, which pro-vides powerful connectivity for work or family with simple, intui-tive controls.

New 6.5- and 8-foot boxes with standard CornerStep bumpers, EZ lift and lower tailgates, and other features that make cargo handling easier.

Silverado HD’s all-new exterior communicates strength and capa-bility, while also enhancing aero-dynamics for improved efficiency and reduced wind noise.

It also improves cooling for more consistent power under tough conditions.

“The passion we have for trucks is reflected in every line and powerfully sculpted machined surface of the HD Chevrolet,” said Tom Peters, design director.

“From the dramatic sculpture

of the one-piece structural bum-per, to its muscular hood and side profile, the design reflects a function-driven solution.”

The design of the 2015 Silverado HD is as much about brains as brawn.

New inlaid doors, which fit into recesses in the body side, help reduce wind noise for a quieter cab.

The smallest details of the body, such as the roof and tail-gate spoiler, were tuned in a wind tunnel to smooth airflow over the truck for reduced noise and improved aerodynamic efficiency.

Because HD pickups are fre-quently used for towing under adverse conditions, engineers paid particular attention to airflow for both engine cooling and the engine air intakes.

Starting with air inlets sized to reduce drag and improve effi-ciency, engineers tested cooling airflow in the wind tunnel and on the road to make sure the engines could maintain power on long upgrades at high ambient tem-peratures.

Careful sealing of the front end also ensures that air entering the engine intake remains cool, for optimum performance under tough conditions.

“It is one thing to generate big

power numbers in cool weather, and quite another to maintain power and torque when towing up a long grade on a blistering sum-mer day,” said Luke.

“We think customers will

appreciate all of the work that went into the cooling for the new Silverado HD when they get a chance to really put it to the test.”

Hyundai ushered in a new era for its world-class premium product range with the Canadian debut of the all-new second-generation 2015 Genesis sedan. With a single-minded focus on delivering the driving and ownership experi-ence expected of the best premium sedans in the world, Hyundai redesigned the Genesis from the ground up with bold styling, cut-ting-edge technologies, and exceptional driving dynamics. Pricing for the 2015 Genesis starts from $43,000.

All 2015 Genesis sedans sold in the Canadian market come standard with Hyundai’s all-new HTRAC active all-wheel drive (AWD) system. Performance of the vehicle’s all-new plat-form was validated in some of the world’s most demanding driv-ing environments, including Germany’s famed Nürburgring Nordschleife and Korea’s Yeongam Formula 1 racing cir-cuit. Standard equip-ment includes a 311

horsepower (est.) 3.8-litre GDI V6 engine, adaptive HID head-lights, LED tail lights, LED fog lamps, proxim-ity keyless entry with push-button ignition, 12-way power-adjust-able heated front seats, an 8-inch touch-screen navigation system with rear-view camera, and much more.

The $48,000 3.8 Luxury model adds desirable features like premium Napa leather, natural open-pore wood trim, front venti-lated seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, blind spot detection (BSD), and a 14-speaker Lexicon surround-sound audio system.

Buyers who select the $53,000 3.8 tech-nology model can take advantage of advanced driver assistance fea-tures including autono-mous emergency braking (AEB), a lane keeping assist system (LKAS), adaptive cruise control (ACC) with stop-and-go capability, a full-colour head-up display (HUD), and an industry-first CO2 sen-

sor control system.For $62,000, the

5.0 Ultimate model adds Hyundai’s award-winning Tau 5.0-litre GDI V8 developing 420 horsepower (est.) in addition to premium features such as a 9.2-inch high-definition navigation display, an upgraded 900-watt Lexicon surround-sound audio system with 17 speakers, a continuous damping control (CDC) suspen-sion, a suede headliner, headlamp washers and more.

Originally intro-duced in 2009, Hyundai’s signature “fluidic sculpture” design language has since influenced every model in the brand’s line-up. The all-new 2015 Genesis is the first Hyundai product to feature the styling theme’s second gen-eration, dubbed fluidic sculpture 2.0.

Adaptable to the company’s entire product range, fluidic sculpture 2.0 will give all Hyundai products a consistent modern aes-thetic and a premium overall feel.

Harley-Davidson has more rush in the tank. Spy photos, gossip and wild specula-tion are flooding the Internet as Harley-Davidson fans around the globe anticipate the return of the Road Glide motorcycle. The wait is over and the Road Glide is back.

Weeks before the announcement of its complete 2015 model line-up, Harley-Davidson previewed the Road Glide and Road Glide Special, two of its new 2015 motorcycles. Infused with DNA of the customer-led product development effort Project RUSHMORE, the two sleek, shark-nose touring models were revealed during special events at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, S.D., and at the National Bikers Roundup (NBR) in Tulsa, Okla on Aug. 1.

“Road Glide has always had an incred-ibly passionate following, which is why its return to the model line-up is exciting for our customers and our company,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Operating Officer of Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

“With Project Rushmore technology, intuitive features and great new styling, we’re delivering an improved ride for the Road Glide faithful and the many others looking for more cool Project Rushmore motorcycle options.”

One look at the new contour of the famous Road Glide fairing is all it takes to see past form and convention were put aside and a new rebellious design emerged.

The Road Glide motorcycle earned its status satisfying the hardcore and now it is

back. From the wicked new Dual Reflector Daymaker LED headlights to the combina-tion stop/turn/taillights, the Road Glide motorcycles set out to make the ultimate statement in custom, high-mile aggression and back it up with all the function riders demand.

“The Road Glide has always been a bike for a rider who’s cut from a different cloth, a person who wants to make a statement as they chase the freedom of the road,” said Michael Goche, Product Planning Manager.

“This new model respects that spirit while offering a significant improvement in aerodynamic and ergonomic comfort, LED lighting and the full suite of Project RUSHMORE features that have been such a huge hit with touring riders around the world.”

Road Glide Shaped by countless hours of wind tun-

nel testing, the new frame-mounted Road Glide motorcycle fairing features a triple splitstream vent that significantly reduces head buffeting while still providing com-fortable airflow around the rider. The bril-liant white beams of the Dual Daymaker Reflector LED headlamp blasts through the murkiest of nights. Centered in the inner fairing is the color screen of a Boom! Box 4.3 infotainment system controlled by twin joysticks located on a new swept-back han-dlebar that puts the rider in a commanding, comfortable position. A High Output Twin Cam 103 V-Twin engine burbles through

two chrome mufflers, its abundant torque always on tap with just a twist of the throt-tle. Touring features include one-touch hard saddlebags, cruise control, easy-to-read gauges, adjustable air-ride rear suspension and new ergonomic hand controls with intuitive design and improved tactile feel.

Road Glide Special Select premium features elevate the

performance and style of the Road Glide Special from the base model. These enhancements include the premium Boom! Box 6.5 GT infotainment system with touch screen and GPS navigation, reflex linked brakes with ABS and hand-adjustable low-profile rear suspension.

An exclusive painted inner fairing and

hand-applied pinstriping move the styling up a notch.

The new 2015 Road Glide and Road Glide Special models started arriving at authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships on Aug. 26, 2014. Visit h-d.com/roadglide for more information.

Offered for the first time in a Street Glide, the Screamin’ Eagle Twin-Cooled Twin Cam 110 powertrain pumps out a stout 115 ft. lbs. of torque to really move this bike down the road. A side-fill fuel

tank is topped with a new slammed console with illuminated CVO logo.

Other custom fea-tures include new five-spoke polished chrome Aggressor cus-tom wheels, extended saddlebags, Airflow Collection accessories from hand grips to muffler caps, a custom CVO seat, Daymaker LED headlamp and Wind Splitter wind-screen.

This, plus all the standard Project

RUSHMORE features, including an iconic Batwing fairing with splitstream vent to reduce head buffet-ing and the Boom! Box 6.5GT infotainment system with touch screen and GPS.

Top it off with the added exclusivity of four color options: scorching yellow/starfire black flames, starfire black/gold dust flames, ultraviolet blue/molten lava flames and hard candy mercury/smoky quartz flames.

An Art Deco-style paint scheme, wide whitewall tires, and classic Softail lines elevate vintage style to a classic art form, but this easy-riding motor-cycle also offers mod-ern performance and tour-ready technology.

An all-new braking system combines a redesigned master cyl-

inder and caliper with a 300mm front rotor to deliver intuitive braking control with reduced lever effort.

The side stand was also redesigned for easier access.

Convertible com-ponents – including a quick-detach wind-shield, saddlebags, luggage rack, backrest

and passenger pil-lion – make it easy to transform the Harley-Davidson CVO Softail Deluxe from a touring machine to a boulevard cruiser in just minutes.

A Road Tech zumo 660 GPS Navigator is integrated with the windshield. Its low center of gravity and 24-inch seat height

make the CVO Softail Deluxe an ideal option for riders of smaller stature.

Drenched in chrome and color, the CVO Softail Deluxe is sure to turn heads as it racks up the miles.

New color options are bermuda blue/star-dust silver and black crystal/dark tungsten.

Volkswagen may not have invented the hatchback, but it cer-tainly made the most of it with the Golf.

It debuted here in 1974 as the Rabbit (the Golf in the rest of the world) supplanting the VW Beetle, until that time, the largest selling car in history.

Compared to the Beetle, the Rabbit/Golf was different in every way. The engine/trans-mission/drive was at the front, not the rear as in the Beetle.

The Golf was water- not air-cooled. Younger readers may laugh, but the Beetle relied on a supplemental gasoline heater to keep the cabin warmish in the winter. But the big plus was more than the two doors and a usable cargo area, which the Beetle lacked. And then there was the big hatch

which endowed the Golf with cargo volume way out of proportion to its outside dimen-sions. And it was fun to drive, whereas the Beetle was a chore.

With its puny-pow-ered flat-four, the best way to drive the Beetle was to keep the revs up as high as possible so as to not lose forward momentum and use the gears for going and stopping because the Beetle’s brakes were marginal at any kind of speed.

The first Golf weighed about 750 kg, thanks to its unibody construction with light-ness resulting in han-dling that set it apart.

To this day, the Golf’s “European” driv-ing feel is considered by many as the bench-mark in the compact car segment.

And buyers around the world have agreed, with more than 30 mil-lion sold to date.

But now the seventh generation Golf is soon to arrive in Canadian showrooms, and while it may have the same overall look (why mess with good thing?), it is a very different car than the previous six models.

It is lighter, bigger, more fuel efficient, more powerful and more versatile than the outgoing model.

Called the Mk 7 inside VW, it now sits atop the Jetta with the Jetta considered the entry-level model.

Along with the Golf GTI (also now in show-rooms), it will be fol-lowed next year by the Golf SportWagon (for-merly Golf Wagon) and the Golf R, which will be the topline model.

The Mk 7 Golf is based on VW’s new Modular Transverse Matrix platform that costs less to produce while adding length-height/width flexibility

for major reductions in economy of scale, while allowing for regional variations and low vol-ume niche models.

It also accommo-dates a wide variety of powerplants including gasoline, diesel, com-pressed natural gas, full

electric, full or plug-in hybrid and front- or all-wheel-drive.In the new Golf, passenger volume is up to 2,650 litres and

cargo expands to 640 litres (floor to ceiling), an increase of 40 litres over the Mk 6.

front-drive Golf is two engines — the first being an all-new 1.8-litre inline single scroll turbo gasoline unit

producing 170 hp and 200 lb/ft of torque with a five-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic transmis-

sion. Also available in the Clean Diesel ver-sion of the Golf is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel with direct injection

for 150 hp and 236 lb/ft of torque. The diesel gets a more flexible six-speed manual or avail-able six-speed dual-

clutch automatic.At this writing

Natural Resources Canada was still cal-culating fuel numbers under the new five-cy-cle testing procedure so they were not available.

I remember when a photographer at the Mississauga News bought a new Rabbit when they first came out. It was unibody too but with nowhere near the chassis rigidity of the Mk 7.

Freddie the Flashbulb would roll that Rabbit into a cor-ner and you could feel the floor beneath your feet bending. In high-g instances, the outside rear wheel would actu-ally lift off the ground. That won’t happen in the new Golf. I know because I tried.

North of San Francisco where the launch of the new Golf and GTI took place, is Marin County that abounds in very tight, very twisty roads, some not much wider than a two-car driveway.

I drove the diesel five-door version and, with 236 lb/ft of torque, it really dug in.

If there was chas-sis flex, I’d never know it but the bite of the front-end suspension geometry and the way it clung to the road (despite what I did to it) was truly confidence inspiring.

One of the best features on roads like these was stopping power. With 11.3-in slotted discs up front and 10-in solids on the rear (the gasoline ver-sion gets 10.3-in), nail-ing the brakes when I over-cooked things was mightily appreciated.

Which brings me to safety. Besides all the mandated driver/passenger aids such as ABS, traction control and electronic stability control is a standard new feature on the Golf called Automatic Post-Collision Braking.

The concept is that a crash is rarely a single-instance occurrence. Instead it is a series of initial impacts in less-ening degrees of sever-ity that often cause additional collisions with other vehicles or objects. What the VW system does is apply the brakes when a

primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors, thus helping reduce residual kinetic energy and, in turn, the chance of additional damage.

The new Golf is available in three- and five-door models, the Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The entry-level Trendline is the only version offered in three-door and five-door. All others are five-door models.

The three-door Trendline starts at $18,995 for the manual and $20,395 for the automatic. Starting prices for the 1.8-litre five-door by trim level are: $19,995, $22,895 and $28,495. For the diesels, starting prices are: $23,095, $26,795 and $30,995.

At this writing, Volkswagen Canada is poised to see 2014 set an all-time record with 17,925 units already sold by the end of April.

If so, 2014 would represent the fifth straight record year. With the seventh gener-ation Golf, it looks like the VW beat will just keep on coming.

The classic Golf hatchback lines have evolved over the years but are still immediately recognizable as a Golf. The interior of the 2015 Golf is very clean and simple with extensive use of soft touch materials.

While the S-Class may be the flagship, it is the C-Class that is the cornerstone upon which the pas-senger car division of Mercedes-Benz is built.

The largest volume-selling car in the Three-Pointed Star fleet, the attraction of the C-Class is that it makes Mercedes-Benz qual-ity and build-integrity attainable for the great majority of us who don’t have luxury-lined wallets.

When it arrives in September, we will initially get two ver-sions, both with 4Matic all-wheel-drive, starting with the C300 4Matic with a 2.0-litre, turbo four-cylinder produc-ing 235 hp and 273 lb/ft of torque.

It will have a starting price of $43,000.

The other model is the C400 4Matic with a twin turbo direct injec-tion V6 with 329 hp and 354 lb/ft of torque.

Starting price will be $51,400. Shipping fee

for both is $2,075.At this writing fuel

consumption numbers were still being calcu-lated.

The C-Class is big-ger in every way with a three-inch longer wheelbase, as well as 1.6 inches wider and 3.7 inches longer, which allows for a larger cabin and an increase of 17 cu ft of cargo volume.

Total trunk volume is 480 litres.

The suspension is totally new with a four-link front axle sys-tem separate from the spring strut.

The result is more grip that increases lateral input response from the driver.

At the rear there is a five-link independent setup.

Buyers will have a choice of standard steel suspension, or option-ally, the first air ride in the segment at all four wheels.

Standard is Agility Control that offers the driver a choice of five damping modes: Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual.

The latter allows the driver to dial in a vari-ety of personal settings. All this is made pos-sible by a simple rocker switch on the centre console.

The new C-Class is loaded with techno wonders, but perhaps the most significant (at least to me) is the touchpad set into a hand rest that juts over the controller on the centre console.

Like a smartphone, the pad is sensitive to

finger gestures, but it also recognizes let-ters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting.

The user receives clear tactile feedback when operating the touchpad’s control surface, which boosts its intuitive nature and makes it much easier for the driver to learn to the point it becomes second nature.

Also new to the C-Class is a heads-up unit that displays a

wide of range of real time information on the windshield in the direct ahead line of sight of the driver.

I drove both versions of the new C-Class in the Seattle area and discovered that, as I am finding on other German luxury cars, the new breed of air suspensions is the way to go.

Besides simply low-ering or raising body height depending on conditions, air sus-

pension reacts more positively, not to men-tion more quickly, to whatever road surface is being encountered.

That four-cylinder in the C300 may be small, but it is lusty in power delivery, thanks to the near instant arrival of turbo power to the four wheels.

But, the V6 in the C400 raises the C-Class into a sports sedan to reckoned with, not just for the straight-line power, but also for the way the 4Matic takes torque and applies it to the pavement.

Standard safety features begin with Pre-Safe that can detect when an accident is imminent and begins by tightening the safety belts and closes the side windows and sunroof if a rollover is sensed.

This is part of the Collision Prevention Assist Plus system that gives a visual and sound warning when a crash is sensed and works within a speed range of 7-250 km/h. In addition, if the

driver does not react between 7-105 km/h, the autonomous partial braking steps in to slow the C-Class.

Another standard feature is Blind Spot Assist, which uses short-range radar along the side and rear of the C-Class and shows a red warning symbol on the exterior mirror if another vehicle moves into the blind spot zone.

If the driver ignores the symbol, or the other car moves closer, there is an audible warning sound.

Lastly, Attention Assist monitors the behaviour of the driver by looking for signs of inattentiveness.

If that occurs, both a visual and audible warning are displayed/sounded, letting the driver know it’s time to pull over. The system works in the 60-200 km/h range.

The C-Class offers and contains so much undreamed technology from just a generation ago, yet, with a price that many can afford.

COMPLETE TURBOCHARGER & FUEL INJECTION REMANUFACTURING

767 Notre Dame Drive // Kamloops , BC250.372.9300 // Visit us online at TVDI.ca

It gets cold - here are some things we should check:

r

water separation guidelines

Are You Ready For Winter? We have 25 years experience with

diesel mechanic repairs and are passionate about what we do and take pride in all our work.

We have the latest updates and ashes, OEM scan tools and are up to date in the latest technologies in Turbo Chargers, Fuel Injection and Diesel Motors.

We actually have the tools , knowledge, and experience to rebuild parts like fuel injectors and turbo chargers if there is a need to do that.

We specialize in anything diesel old or new, we can get the job done for you cost effectively.

As the weather gets colder, make sure your diesel vehicle is ready to bear the winter months.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

In the colder weather it is always advisable to keep your fuel tank as full as possible to minimize the condensation that can occur as the tank cools off at night.

Remember to treat your fuel with a good quality conditioner, such as Stanadyne Performance Formula, never a conditioner

that emulsifies the water.Fall is a good time to change

your fuel filter and it is impera-tive that you use an OEM filter or the Racor equivalent so that your water separation ability is intact.

Early in the fall is a great time to book a repair on those 4-wheel drive issues that have been postponed.

Take care of it before the snow and ice hits and to avoid delaying repairs when you need them most. Remember, your

tire guys would rather have the opportunity to deal with your winter tires in much the same manner.

Is your block heater and fluids all in acceptable winter condition?

Diesel engines are compres-sion ignition systems and diffi-cult cold starts become increas-ingly more of a problem as the weather turns. Get on top of hard cold start problems before the temperature outside leaves you looking for a tow truck.

Today’s diesel vehi-cles have been rede-signed and reimagined, making them a growing commodity for buyers.

While diesel cars and trucks were once the relative outcasts of the automotive con-sumer market, diesel passenger vehicles are now the center of new-found demand.

One of the main draws of diesel cars and trucks is their fuel economy.

Consumers focused on saving money and protecting the planet concurrently often find that diesel vehicles are more fuel efficient than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline.

Although diesel costs more at the pump than other fuels, driv-ers who fuel up with diesel gasoline can save around 30 per cent through improved fuel efficiency over regular gasoline.

That can add up to

considerable savings over time.

According to Rushlane, demand for diesel vehicles in the United States was just 3 percent in 2011.

It is predicted to increase to a minimum of 10 percent during the next 10 years.

Why are diesels more efficient?

Diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines.

Higher compression ratios than gasoline produce ultra-high temperatures that will ignite fuel injected directly into the cylin-der head, according to BMW.

Diesel vehicles are equipped to use more of the energy content of the fuel to produce output than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline.

It takes less fuel to provide the same power as standard gasoline.

In the past, diesel cars were associ-

ated with black, sooty exhaust and clanking engines.

However, today’s modern diesel cars are quiet and burn fuel more cleanly due to new technology.

New, clean diesel fuel is the only diesel fuel being sold in the United States.

Although diesel vehicles have been popular in Europe for a while, they have not been very appealing in North America. Things are starting to change.

German-based Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi have a history of offering an extensive range of diesel-pow-ered vehicles in the American market.

Recognizing the demand for diesel cars and trucks, Chevrolet/GMC, Ford and Jeep are now offering diesel vehicles that they hope will attract a new legion of customers. — Metro News Service

Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled the all-new Mazda2 this summer.

Production of the model, which has been fully redesigned for the first time in seven years, has begun at Mazda’s Hofu Plant No. 1 in Yamaguchi, Japan.

Following the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6, and Mazda3, the all-new Mazda2 is the fourth in Mazda’s line-up of next-generation models which adopt the full range of SKYACTIV Technology and KODO – Soul of Motion design.

The all-new Mazda2 will be rolled out in global markets starting in Japan this

autumn.The all-new Mazda2 brings new levels of

functionality and added value by evolving the concepts and technologies cultivated through the development of earlier next-generation products, and condensing them in a compact body.

KODO design gives the car a dynamic and energetic form, and finely crafted inte-rior, imparting a presence unrivalled in the subcompact class.

Development based on the same engineering concepts as those in larger next-generation models — new SKYACTIV

engines, transmissions, body, and chassis — allow the all-new Mazda2 to provide both outstanding safety and eco-performance, and the brand’s trademark driving pleasure.

The model also features a wide range of cutting-edge technologies such as the Mazda Connect next-generation car con-nectivity system, and i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features that aid the driver in recognizing and responding to hazards.

The all-new Mazda2 will be available in certain markets with the SKYACTIV-D 1.5, a new small-displacement clean diesel engine that offers excellent fuel economy and eco-performance while delivering torque com-parable to a 2.5-litre gasoline engine.

Along with next-generation high-effi-ciency direct-injection gasoline engines, the

SKYACTIV-G 1.3 and SKYACTIV-G 1.5, the clean diesel engine will allow Mazda to offer an engine line-up tailored to the needs of each market.

The Mazda2 will come to the Canadian market in 2015, and will get the SKYACTIV-G 1.5-litre gasoline engine.

With total sales of over 2.4 million units globally, the Mazda2 is one of Mazda’s core products.

Starting with the launch of the original in 1996, the Mazda2 has brought new value to the subcompact segment every time it has been fully redesigned.

With this fourth generation Mazda2, Mazda again offers customers all over the world a new interpretation of the subcom-pact car.

The award-winning Buick Enclave contin-ues to draw accolades and bring new custom-ers to the brand for its outstanding design, performance and safety features.

The three-row luxu-ry crossover that forged the brand’s renaissance saw its best year ever in 2013. Recent acco-lades include Kelley Blue Book’s 2014 5-Year Cost-to-Own award for the full-size luxury SUV/crossover cat-egory.

Enclave continue to outsell rivals includ-ing Lincoln MKT, Volvo XC90 and Infiniti QX60 with its state-of the-art features, capability and safety offerings such as the industry-first stan-dard front centre air bag, forward collision alert, lane departure and text-to-voice tech-nology.

It is also designed to comfortably accom-modate three rows of adults and provides

more third-row leg room than the Infiniti JX, Acura MDX, Lincoln MKT, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90.

For the 2015 model year, Enclave offers a new heated wood steer-ing wheel. It is stan-dard on Leather and Premium models – and adds another luxurious detail to the inviting interior.

The Enclave’s exte-rior and interior colour palettes have also been refined for 2015. A new dark plum interior colour is available, as well as four new exte-rior colours: Crimson red tintcoat, dark sap-phire blue metallic, dark chocolate metallic and midnight amethyst metallic.

This year the Enclave is offered in two trim levels: leather (1SL) and premium (1SN). All-wheel drive is available on leather and standard on premium, and all models are pow-ered by a direct-inject-

ed 3.6L V-6 that delivers a fuel efficiency rating of 9.9 L/100kmn the highway (FWD model).

The Buick suite of privileges on all 2015 Buick models includes two years/40,000 km of scheduled mainte-nance, including oil changes and oil filter changes.

It comple-ments Buick’s four-year/80,000km Buick base warranty and six-year/110,000 km powertrain component limited warranty.

E cient, smooth driving experience

Enclave is driven by a 3.6L V-6 engine featuring fuel-saving direct injection tech-nology and continu-ously variable valve timing, and matched with a six-speed auto-matic transmission. Direct injection helps the engine produce power comparable to a V-8 – SAE-certified 288 horsepower (215 Nm)

and 270 lb-ft of torque (366 Nm) – with good efficiency. Fuel effi-ciency ratings of 14.2 L/100km city and 9.9 L/100km highway for front-wheel-drive mod-els are very competitive with other three-row crossovers and utilities.

The strong V-6 engine also enables Enclave to tow up to 2,045 kg (4,500 pounds) when properly equipped, and it can be flat-towed in both FWD and AWD configura-tions.

The available intel-ligent all-wheel-drive system provides increased traction on slippery roads by actively managing the torque distribution between the front and rear axles, based on factors such as wheel speed, throttle and sur-face conditions.

There is no driver intervention; the system automati-cally decides how much torque to apply and

delivers it to the wheels that have the best trac-tion.

Safety featuresThe Enclave

includes the seg-ment’s first front center air bag. This feature deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat and inflates between the driver and front passenger, provid-ing added protection

for both front occu-pants in side-impact crashes.

Standard safety features also include StabiliTrak, traction control, panic brake assist, rearview camera system and a total of seven air bags – includ-ing head-curtain side air bags covering out-board occupants in all three passenger rows.

Enclave offers a

number of camera- and radar-based safety features. They monitor areas around the vehi-cle and provide alerts to assist the driver in avoiding collisions.

Side blind zone alert and rear cross traffic alert are radar-based, while forward colli-sion alert and lane departure warning are camera-based.

ENCLAVE OFFERS LUXURY, REFINEMENT AND VERSATILITY

Toyota Canada celebrated 50 years of business this summer. July 17 marked the 50-year anniversary of Toyota granting a dis-tributorship agreement to Canadian Motor Industries, which later became Toyota Canada.

Since 1964 Toyota Canada has sold more than four million vehi-cles in Canada through a national network of 285 Toyota, Lexus and Scion dealerships.

Sun Country Toyota has been in Kamloops for 12 years, moving to its Cariboo Place location nine years ago. The local dealer-ship has won pinnacle awards from Toyota Canada for customer satisfaction. Three years ago the dealer-ship expanded to accommodate Toyota’s Scion brand.

“As partners with Toyota Canada we are very proud that Toyota has grown from its humble beginnings in Canada to being a net exporter of vehicles,” said Rob Splane, dealer principal at Sun Country Toyota.

In 1965, Toyota offered two models and sold 755 vehicles in Canada. Today, Toyota offers a full lineup of 20 cars and trucks and has cumulatively sold over four million vehicles. Toyota Canada now has two assembly plants in the country and employs 24,000 people either directly or indirectly.

Toyota maintains its belief in building its vehicles where it sells them. Eighteen Toyota and Lexus mod-els are built in North America, including six in Canada. Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Lexus RX 350 and Lexus RX 450h are built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ont. The RAV4 and RAV4 EV are built at Toyota’s newest plant in Woodstock, Ont. Toyota Manufacturing Canada was the first plant outside Japan to

build a Lexus vehicle and is the only manu-facturer in Canada to assemble both hybrid and electric vehicles.

The Toyota Earth Charter, which outlines the company’s prin-ciples for being envi-ronmentally respon-sible, was adopted by all Toyota affiliates in 2000. In 2001 it was recognized as being in compliance with inter-national environmen-tal management stan-dards and has since expanded its programs across Canada.

In addition to investing $8 billion in Canada’s automo-tive industry, Toyota Canada has donated millions of dollars to various charitable initiatives through the Toyota Canada Foundation.

“We are proud of Toyota Canada’s history and look forward to a long and successful relationship with them and our Canadian cus-tomers,” Splane said.

This time of year, the big-gest mistake people make is either not winterizing their RV or leaving it until the last minute, and by then it’s too late.

Your RV’s waterlines are narrow and filled with water, and if you don’t win-terize, the waterlines will freeze when the weather turns cold.

That causes them to expand and burst open.

Winterizing your RV is cheap — repairing it is not.

A $10 plumbing line could cost you hundreds of dollars to replace because it’s so difficult to access the line to change it.

It’s easier than you might think to winterize your own RV, just follow these simple directions.

Step 1: Drain the system

Drain your black water and then your grey water at a sani-dump (this order is important because the grey water will wash away the black water).

Next, drain your cold and hot water line drains.

They’re low-point drains, so only a little trickle of water will come out.

Be sure to put the plugs

back on after draining or your antifreeze will drain out.

Now, it’s time to drain your fresh water tank.

Drain your hot water heater.

First, alleviate pressure by opening up the hot tap in the kitchen or the relief valve on the water heater itself — otherwise the plug will shoot out at you like a rocket!

The two main brands of hot water heater are Atwood and Suburban.

If you have an Atwood heater, you’ll need a 7/8” socket with an extension.

If you have a Suburban, you’ll need to remove the anode rod with a 1” 1/16 socket. Let the water drain out.

Step 2: Bypass your hot water heater

First off, you don’t need to put antifreeze in the hot water heater, fresh water tank, or grey and black water holding tanks.

They’re already drained, so there’s plenty of room for expansion if some remain-ing liquid freezes inside.

It’s the waterlines them-selves you need to worry about because there’s no

room to expand. Plus, if you accidentally

circulate antifreeze into your hot water heater, you’ll need eight to 12 gallons of antifreeze, which is com-pletely unnecessary.

Your heater will have a water line in the bottom – that’s the cold water going in.

A hot water line comes out on the top which fills your hot water pipes.

If there’s a middle pipe connecting those two water lines, that’s the bypass which prevents antifreeze from entering the water heater.

Most units have this bypass already installed — usually a one-, two- or three-bypass valve system.

With a three-valve sys-tem, make sure the valves on the cold and hot water lines are turned perpen-dicular to the line itself.

Then turn the valve on the bypass so it’s parallel to the bypass line; these allow water to bypass the tank and flow freely from the cold to the hot line.

On a two-valve system, turn both valves to that they’re perpendicular to the cold and hot water lines, and parallel to the bypass line.

With a one-valve system, all you need to do is close the valve so it appears per-pendicular to the cold water line.

Some RVs don’t have a bypass system built in, so you’ll need to buy a tempo-rary bypass kit.

Come into your local RV dealership parts depart-ment to figure out what kind you need.

If you have a water filter, you’ll need to bypass that too.

Sometimes it’s as simple as removing the filter from its container and re-attaching the container, and sometimes you’ll need to put in a bypass.

Again, the parts depart-ment can help.

Step 3: Connect antifreeze to the water pump

You’ll need to set up a temporary water pump bypass to get the antifreeze into your plumbing system.

Have a few towels handy in case of dribbles, and disconnect the water pump from the fresh water tank on the water pump side.

Screw in the temporary bypass to the pump side, then put the other end into a jug of RV antifreeze.

In total, you’ll probably need two jugs of antifreeze.

Make sure it’s non-toxic RV plumbing antifreeze,

which is specifically designed for a plumbing system.

Step 4: Run all water outlets

Now you’ll want to get that antifreeze pumping through all your waterlines.

Make sure the outside drain plug and all water taps are closed, and then turn on the water pump.

Run everything individu-ally.

Run your hot tap in the kitchen until you see anti-freeze and let it run for a second.

Do the same with the cold tap. Run the hot and cold in the bathroom sink, then run the hot and cold in the tub, and make sure you run the shower head until you see antifreeze.

Flush the toilet until you see antifreeze. Pour about a cup full of antifreeze down all of the p-traps (drains).

If you have an outside shower or taps, make sure you run them on the hot and cold side until you see antifreeze.

Lastly, turn off your water pump.

Step 5: Fill check-valve line

The check-valve line is where you hook up your RV to city water. It needs a bit of antifreeze too.

First of all, it’s very important to make sure your water pump is in the off position.

Remove the screen attached to your city water hookup.

Push in on the check valve inside (some water will spurt out) and hold it down until you see some antifreeze trickle back down that line.

If your RV has a washing machine or an icemaker, you’ll have to winterize those items too.

Give your local RV deal-ership a call for more infor-mation.

The last step is a crucial one, or you’ll be kicking yourself come springtime.

Go back to the water pump and reconnect it.

A lot of people forget to connect it back up, then hook up their water in the spring and flood their floor, causing water damage and a huge headache.

With that, you’re fully winterized for freezing tem-peratures.

If that sounds compli-cated, bring it in for winter-izing

If those steps were easy and straightforward, then great.

If they sounded compli-cated, then remember that you can always bring your RV into a service depart-ment that offers a complete winterizing package.
