Student Attendance is a Priority at Kanahooka High
Regional representatives will be joining members of the
teaching staff, to investigate current student attendance data, with a view to putting strategies in place to make a
significant improvement in student attendance over the remaining days of 2011.
Parents and students will be surveyed over the coming
weeks and interviews will be organised, to assist in the collection of data on why the school‟s student attendance
rates are lower than those of other schools.
Research shows that there is a significant relationship
between student attendance and student success.
Tree Planting Day Students and staff enjoyed the „spring‟ weather on Friday
29 July, to plant trees and shrubs around the school. Under the careful supervision of Mrs Lowis and Mr Kipp,
approximately 20 enthusiastic students from the school‟s Environment team wielded spades, shovels and picks as
they dug, planted and watered the plants in. The plants were donated by Wollongong City Council and are a fitting addition to the beautification of the school grounds and to
the local ecosystem.
Official Opening of the Intensive Language Centre
This event was held on Tuesday 2 August, when P&C
representatives, students and staff attended the ceremony.
The opening was officially performed by Member for Throsby Stephen Jones, who mentioned that the project was part of the Federal Government‟s commitment to
employment.
The building is a very welcome addition to the school‟s
teaching and learning spaces and provides an outstanding venue for the study of Asian languages at the school.
Japanese is currently studied by Year 8 and Year 9, with plans to extend this to Year 10 and Year 11 in 2012.
Message from Careers This is an important time for Year 10 and 12.
Students in Year 10 will soon be choosing their subjects
for the senior years and those in Year 12 will soon be choosing courses for University, planning their TAFE
applications or starting to apply for Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
It is important for students to develop a career plan with
the help of Ms Phelan. Parents can also provide great help by listening to their child and discussing their plans.
Parents should feel free to contact Ms Phelan by phone, email or in person, to discuss their child's future choices
and find out how they can help.
For up to date information and advice, the school subscribes to mhscareers.

Every day of the school year SAS Staff face new challenges in the running of our public schools and the

On Wednesday during period 4, the SAS Staff attended a thank you

HOST AN INTERNATIONAL
STUDENT AND LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF!
As Marcel Proust, a late 19th century novelist, wrote: “the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new
landscapes but in having new eyes”.
Host an international high school student in February
2012 through Southern Cross Cultural Exchange and prepare to be amazed at the way this unique opportunity helps your family to become closer, to understand
themselves better and to see the world in a new light.
Carefully selected students will arrive in February for one
or two semesters from France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Japan, the U.S.A. and Canada.
They will live as a local, attend a local secondary school, are fully insured and have their own spending money.
