Biographical Sketch William Terence Kane, S.J., was born on October 20, 1880, in Chicago, one of six
children of Lawrence and Elizabeth McCarthy Kane. He attended Holy Family School
and St. Ignatius College before entering the Society of Jesus in 1898. During World War
I (1918-1919) he was a Chaplain for the 35th
Division, where Harry S. Truman was a
major. In 1930 he was named University Librarian at Loyola University, Chicago, a
position he retained until his death in 1946. While University Librarian, Father Kane
established the Jesuitca and Napoleonica collections at the library, in addition to creating
an archival collection documenting the university’s history, Jesuit history, and local
Catholic history.
Scope and Content The Kane Collection is comprised of 19.5 linear feet spanning the years 1829 to 1945.
The collection includes correspondence, reports, journals, minutes, photographs,
blueprints, drawings, programs, syllabi, flyers, booklets, theses, sheet music, and
Photostat copies. Father Kane concentrated on collecting Loyola University, Jesuit, and
local Catholic history. Languages found in the collection include English, French, Latin,
Italian, and Spanish.
This collection is organized according to a classification schedule developed by Father
Kane. It is broken down into four categories – Loyola University, Jesuitica, Local
Catholic History, and Prints/Photographs, which are further divided into subjects within
each category. The numbering system used by Father Kane (i.e. A1.1 – A1.11) represents
individual items and is used as the folder numbers for this finding aid.
