A sun drizzled landscape brimming with lush vineyards, sandy beaches, epic landscapes and platters

filled with sumptuous food.

South Australia is often described as

‘Australia in one’ and it’s easy to see

why. It boasts many unique places

of cultural, natural and spiritual

significance. Its 2,000 mile coastline has

fantastic fishing, boating and surfing.

And for wildlife you can’t beat Kangaroo

Island, a zoo without fences, where

kangaroos and koalas abound, set in an

ocean that teems with fish, sea lions,

penguins, and even whales.

With wine and seafood aplenty, an

accessible Outback, stunning coastal

scenery and the warmest of welcomes,

South Australia is the country in a

nutshell. From the tree-lined boulevards

of its capital, Adelaide, to the rocky and

remote Flinders Ranges, no one knows

South Australia better than Bridge &

Wickers. Our specialist consultants would

be delighted to tailor-make your holiday

to this incredible destination.

Freedom isn’t a state of mind,

it’s an island. And what an

island! Minutes from

the mainland, but

a million miles

away in other respects, Kangaroo Island

is a unique, unspoilt sanctuary for wildlife

and a place of natural, rugged beauty.

Just a short flight from Adelaide, it is one of

the best places to see the widest range of

Australian native animals in

their natural habitat.

There’s so much to do on

Kangaroo island: explore

untouched bushland, fish

on pristine beaches, observe

the wildlife on an eco tour or

take a self drive. Visit Seal

Bay and watch sea lions as

they rest, play and surf the

waves, or follow the Kangaroo

Island Shipwreck Trail along

the spectacular coast. Visit

Flinders Chase National Park and

watch the abundant wildlife, or

go bushwalking along trails

through forests that open up to

stunning beaches. And visit the

HOP OVERTO KANGAROO

ISLAND

Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch which

reveal the amazing wild forces of nature.

Few places in the world are as committed to

sustainable tourism as Kangaroo Island. It is

protected through conservation zoning,

wildlife reserves and heritage listings, and

the local population are totally dedicated to

the cause. KI (as it’s known to the locals) is

an easy island to explore. Hire a car on the

mainland and take the short ferry ride across

and then discover its delights under your

own steam. Alternatively we have lots of

small group guided tours which we can

arrange. You can find details of one of our

favourites overleaf.

Day 1 - Flinders Chase National Park

This two-day tour of Kangaroo Island starts

at the airport on your arrival from Adelaide

and includes the Flinders Chase National

Park, and a visit to a 20,000 strong fur seal

colony at Admirals Arch, a spectacular

coastal grotto. You will also see Remarkable

Rocks, a cluster of huge natural granite

sculptures (think Henry Moore meets

Salvador Dali) and enjoy a memorable picnic

in the bush. You’ll stay the night at Stranraer

Homestead, a family run 1920s farmhouse

with a wraparound veranda and a spread of

5,000 acres. It’s very traditional in style, with

open fires in all four bedrooms and lots of

little comforting touches like the basket full

of woolly slippers just inside the door and a

set of Driza-Bones just in case the weather

turns wild. It’s right in the middle of the island,

with great views, and the food is terrific.

Day 2 - Seal Bay

On day two you’ll travel through some of

the island’s best farming country to the

North Coast and Lathami Conservation Park

where you’ll walk quietly through the bush

with your guide looking for wallabies, koalas

and kangaroos (what makes that noise,

whose tracks are those, and who left THAT

little pile there?) After another fine bush

picnic you’ll walk along the beach to see the

sea lions loafing, playing, nursing and

occasionally scrapping on the beach at Seal

Bay. In the late afternoon, return to the

airport for your flight back to Adelaide.

Our two day ‘KI in Style’ tour costs from £775 pp, including small group

touring, flights and accommodation at Stranraer Homestead

DISCOVER KANGAROO ISLAND ON A TWO DAY SMALL GROUP GUIDED TOUR

Kangaroo Island, just a hop away from

Adelaide is one of the best places on the

continent to see a menagerie of native

animals in its natural habitat, including many

rare species. It’s the Galapagos of Down

Under. Even in a day on KI you are likely to

spot koalas and wallabies (5,000 of the latter

to every person!), emus and kangaroos,

possums and penguins, seals and sea lions

and birdlife from cockatoos to ospreys.

Divorced from the mainland 10,000 years

ago, its evolution has been free of feral pests

and predators such as foxes. The entire

island has barely changed since explorer

Matthew Flinders first stepped ashore

back in 1802.

STAY IN STYLE

Kangaroo Island is dotted

with wonderful places to

stay, ranging from simple

homesteads to luxury boutique

hotels. Our recommendation is for

a minimum of two nights to truly relax and

experience this idyllic island paradise.

SOUTHERN OCEAN LODGE

Southern Ocean Lodge is Australia’s premier

luxury lodge, offering a unique and exclusive

travel experience. Located on top of a

secluded cliff overlooking a rugged stretch

of coast, the lodge commands peerless

views of the wild Southern Ocean and

pristine Kangaroo Island wilderness.

Sensitive, intimate and sophisticated,

Southern Ocean Lodge is a sanctuary

of refined comfort and style.

STRANRAER HOMESTEAD

Converted from a delightful

1920s homestead, Stranraer

offers unique accommodation

on a working farm which

produces prime lamb, wool

and grain. It offers a country

experience with peace and

tranquillity. Adding to its beauty,

the property has two large, bird filled

lagoons (including cape barren geese and

musk duck) and is surrounded by beautiful

scenery. It makes a comfortable and

convenient base for exploring more of

South Australia is renowned for

its wineries in the Barossa,

Clare Valley and McLaren Vale.

And its capital, Adelaide, is home to a

huge variety of top-class restaurants

bars and hotels.

Adelaide is a pretty city, complete with

spacious boulevards, interesting architecture

and lush gardens. Indulge in some retail

therapy at Rundle Mall, or sample the variety

of tastes on offer at the famed Adelaide

Central Market. With its lively restaurant and

small bar scene the city has a real

cosmopolitan feel and there

is a wide choice of places to

stay, from stylish boutique

hotels to spacious apartments.

You might also like to hop

on a tram from the city centre

to the delightful seaside suburb

of Glenelg and enjoy the sea air

with a walk on the prom.

The Barossa and Clare Valleys are

among the oldest wine growing

regions of Australia; their famous

names include wines such as Peter

Lehman and Penfolds.

Just 40 kms south of Adelaide is the

McLaren Vale region with its rolling vine-

covered hills.

If you prefer not to drive, Bridge & Wickers

can arrange personalised wine tours, such as

the ones detailed opposite and we can

recommend places to stay, like The Louise in

the heart of the Barossa.

Ikara Safari Camp offers a new ‘glamping’ experience; safari tents, including king size beds and en-suite bathrooms, set amongst river red gums, native pines and abundant wildlife.

2 nights, with breakfast and dinner, from £200 per person

South Australia’s outback is

easily accessible. Within 2.5

hours drive from Adelaide you’ll find

yourself in the southern Flinders Ranges.

This is a land of magnificent mountains,

glowing red in the sunset, with caps of

lichen covered rocks and razored edges.

Spend a few days at one of our

selection of properties in the

Outback and you’ll feel

immersed in nature with emus

and kangaroos passing by and

wedge-tailed eagles soaring

overhead. The landscape was

summed up perfectly by

South Australian artist Hans

Heysen: “the bones of the

earth laid bare”. Its layers,

colours and vastness provide

an almost intimidating reminder that we are

only on this earth for a short time.
