each other on this Sunday on the Beautiful Sydney Cricket ground, we are in for a sumptuousCricketing dish with a Aussie-Lankan flavor to it.What to follow are the highlights some of the historic clashes between these two teams in previousWorld cup editions-

(http://sportsaction.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/sasl92.png)1992 edition in a way rejuvenatedthe world cricket with making the One-day Cricket more ‘Colorful’ than before and also giving theAsian teams like Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka the confidence to prove themselves on theinternational circuit.

Sri Lanka were put to bat first by Australia. With courtesy of evergreen Aravinda De Silva’s patientknock of 62 , Lankans managed 189 off their 50 overs. In Reply, Tom Moody and Geoff Marsh gavethem a good start with a 100-run opening partnership. After that, Victory was just a formality for theAussies.

Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 189/9  (50 overs); Arvinda De Silva- 62(133) Peter Taylor – 34/2

Australia- 190/3 (44 overs); Geoff Marsh- 60  Tom Moody-57

The occasioncould not have been better than the World Cup Final between the Belligerent Aussies and well-managed Lankans.Jayasuriya and Kaluvitharana gave One day cricket a new dimension of pinch-hitting which was a prime highlight of this edition. In the big Finale,Sri Lanka chose to field on a turning Lahore wicket banking on their spinners.Australia finished their inning at 241 giving a stiff target of 242.Like 1992 encounter, Aravinda de Silvaproved to be the obstacle again for the Aussies. He scored a wonderful Hundred in the World CupHundred (107*) to crown Sri Lanka with the 1996 title.Aravinda de Silva  was judged Man of the match for his all round performance with an amazinghundred and a couple of important wickets.

Brief Scores: Australia 241/7 (50 overs); Mark Taylor- 74(109) Aravinda de Silva- 42/3

(http://sportsaction.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/sasl2003.png)World cup moved to Africa.South Africa-Zimbabwe co-hosted the 2003 edition .The First Semi final was an intense encounterbetween Australia and Sri Lanka with Australia coming into the World cup almost with an authority towin trophy again. Sri Lankans were having a well-gelled team with likes of Jayasuriya, De Silva, Vaasand Muralitharan.

Australia chose to Bat on a batting-friendly pitch keeping eye on the overcast conditions. Sri Lankawere successful in restricting the Aussies to a gettable target of 212. The Controversial but uniqueAndrew Symonds yet again proved his value in the Aussie batting line up with a brisk 91 off 145. Thematch was evenly poised at the half stage. But, Brett Lee , McGrath and co. made the target of 212 look like a 312 one. None of the Sri Lankanswere able get their feet moving. The  Rainy conditions made the matter worse for the Lankans. Losingtoo many wickets early for the Kangaroos to make it easier to cruise into the finals.Brief Scores: Australia 212/7 (50 overs); A Symonds 91(145)  C Vaas 34/3

Sri- Lanka- 123/7 (38 overs); K Sangakkara 39 (111)  B Lee 35/3

MOM- A Symonds

(http://sportsaction.in/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/sasl07.png)The world cup moved on to theCaribbean islands with beautiful cricketing conditions in the Caribbean. Australia and Sri Lankaplayed each other twice in this edition. In the Super 8s, Sri Lanka played with some clumsy tactics ofnot disclosingVaas and Muralitharan to the Australians before the final which was derided later.Australians comfortably won the match with Nathan Bracken picking up 4 scalps economically. The second time they faced each other was in the all-important World cup Final, yet another worldcup final between the two big teams. Looking at the form, it was looking like stage was set for theAussies to garner another World cup trophy in their baggy-green pocket. There was one gentlemanwho was a little quiet under the shadow of Matthew Hayden especially in the 2007 world cup, AdamGilchrist. But, as they say, Big players need Big stage to rise. Gilchrist just murdered the LankanBowlers in the final. Even the veterans like Vaas and Murali were thrashed away by his blazing knockof 149 off just 104 balls. He played an incredible innings of 149 – the highest for any batsman in aWorld Cup final – to give Australia an imposing a massive total of 281 in mere 38 overs.  The matchalmost concluded in confusing circumstances: the game had run on late, having been reduced to 36overs for Sri Lanka, and bad light ended up stopping play with Sri Lanka’s agreement. It was reallydisappointing end to a final with Sri Lanka not getting complete chnace to play their assigned numberof overs in dark conditions.Australia were Victorious and their joy literally knew no bounds.

Brief Scores: Australia 281/4 (38 overs); A Gilchrist 149(104) L Malinga 49/2

Sri- Lanka- 215/8 (36 overs); S Jayasuriya  63 (67)  M Clarke 33/2

MOM- A Gilchrist
