CO-OP WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT

Introduction:

1. Provide a description of the organization you worked for (i.e. what do they do, how long have they been in business):

Hydroform Solutions is one of the divisions of Martinrea International Inc. They are specialist in medium and large module stampings and assemblies. Martinrea International comes in top 3 in fluid management systems by revenue in North America. They have over 38 facilities worldwide over spread across over overseas such as South America, Europe and has over 13,000 employers. There is business strategy is based on technology, quality and talent development. In year 1998, Martinrea International Inc. was founded just as a joint venture between several corporations and continue to grow under successor corporation Royal Laser Tech corporation.Over a span of 14 years, Martinrea managed to grow successfully in manufacturing assembly business and in year 2013 company experienced an increment in sales, setting up a new record crossing over 3.2 billion. The company continued to quote and and made new business corporates along the way such as transmission housing for Daimler, metal forming and module assembly, fuel filler and fluid management systems for GM. Overall Martinrea International operations continue to improve, thereby building a base for 2014 and for coming years.

2. Provide a description of the department you worked in (i.e. # of employees, main function):

I worked as Production Worker on Lasercell and wide variety of machines and production lines in Bay 3 of Plant. I worked with production and manufacturing engineers along with production supervisors and other co-workers.Meanwhile,I also assisted milliwright technicians, electricians in troubleshooting of machines. Besides this, I also trained new workers on various production lines.

Content:

3. Provide a comprehensive description of your duties, responsibilities, and accomplishments during the Co-op work term. NOTE: Provide a minimum of 500 words in response to question #3 or your report will be considered as incomplete.

I was working as production worker for the co-op work term.I worked primarily owith laser cutting equipment such as TRUMP Lasercell 1005, Robotic Weld cell, Adaptive Bender, Saw cut Support and Schuler. Alongside production,I Performed go and no go guage checks as a part of quality control measures. I had to ensure that all equipment and tools were set up before production starts.I would safely produce the required quantity and

quality of parts on schedule in accordance with company specifications.Assuring that all parts built are highest standard of quality and work with team members to maximize productivity was also one of my daily responsibilities.

Alongside this, I also trained new workers on production lines. Just as I did, I gained hands on experience with Stamping presses,Robotic Welding cells, Jigs and Fixtures. I worked as a team player and complete one or more tasks such as cutting hole creation, finishing and inspection. However, I also reported time, amount of work done as well as any problems to supervisor on hourly basis daily. As a production worker, in my co op role I also evaluated OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) on machines where I worked on daily basis.I also filled OK TO RUN sheet before I actual start production. On Daily basis, I maintained visual check on parts on hourly production so as to produce parts as per highest standard of quality.

The machine where I worked was functioned to cut hole with the aid of laser for mass production of parts. The parts that were produce were GM/CHRYSLER SIDE RAILS. These side rails were further sent for nail piercing and weldment of bracket assembled to the rails. I had to make around 100 or Sometimes, if machine is down/ trouble I as usual would be troubleshooter and try to make machine ok to run as soon possible and if it is not possible I would certainly inform my supervisor or lead hand about that.

I also worked in quality department where FAURECIA MUFFLERS were checked and certified. In that department, I certified different type of models, checked for rattles in mufflers and if there is split on shell and if there is drain hole on the rib.I had to make sure every part is good to go for further processing and manufacturing. I also worked at Robotic Weld cell where Panel Assembly Dsh Upper, GM GMX 350, Buick Regal, Chevy Maliabu and XTS Cadillac components were welded and assembled. After they were assembled a conveyor would move them and I also worked at packaging station where they needed to pack into big bins for shipment.

I also worked in hydroforming section where tubes were hydroformed and bended in presses and highly automated systems. The tubes were hydroformed using SCHULER(PISTON TYPE ACCUMULATOR). While I working for Martinrea International, I learnt the usage of radio controller. Whenever I am in trouble or the machine where I am working is down I immediately call my supervisor through radio controller and therby gradually learnt the art of using radio controller. After that I learnt that my supervisor told me to train other people and tell other to use in right and proper way.Besides this, sometimes I also assisted my co-workers, technicians and electricians when machines were down or they need me there. I got to know the usage of sensors, transducers and actuators.

4. What contributions did you make to the department and to the organization:

I worked as production worker on Laser cell. I was working as a Team member and was helping department to meet their daily production targets by best possible production I can. I was able to implement what I have learnt in classroom to real life engineering products or machines such as Automation control systems(PLCS), Workplace design and industrial ergonomics and most importantly Jigs and Gauge Fixture Design.

5. Describe the knowledge you gained while on the job (include, where possible, how the knowledge gained from your courses was beneficial):

CO-OP WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT

I was able to gain vast amount of knowledge within short span of time. Earlier in semesters I learnt programming, blueprint reading and engineering materials, manufacturing processes. How workforce work on various workstations cycle time downtime those all concepts got crystal clear with exposure to practical manufacturing environment and I became more technical and analytical towards my day to day job duties.I was able to understand with a depth that how those huge assembly and production lines work to meet production deadlines to customer specifications.

6. Describe the skills you developed on the job and/or skills that were reinforced from your courses taken:

Blueprint Reading(Dimensions, drawings, reference) as to actual taking and measuring the production parts.Architecture and working knowledge of PLC(Programmable Logic Controllers).Quality Control as Inspection of production parts on hourly basis.Instrumentation and calibration of various measuring equipments and gauges(checking on fixture).

7. Describe the work attitudes/values that you learned were important on the job:

When we enter industrial manufacturing environment, organization our attitude, values and moral ethics value as much as position in organisation. At my workplace, I was able to develop professionalism, courteous demeanor and strong communication skills to bring execellent results. While I was working, I was quite positive and enthusiastic about my work and kept myself honest to my sub ordinates, co workers and supervisors and managers. With my friendly behaviour and being approachable and cooperative attitude I was able gain trust and reliability from my fellow workers and supervisor. It was really great experience for me to work in one of the most named and famed automotive manufacturing giants Martinrea International Inc.

8. Changes you would make on how the organization operated:

I think organization does not need any changes, infact it is proceeding and growing at a very good pace. The organizarion has high end automated machining and manufacturing machines and systems which are really time and cost effective.

9. Academic suggestions – improvements to the program:

The program is quite good and I think it does not any inmprovements. But I just want to highlight the fact the college courses are too basic, there should be an upgradation of all courses from basic to advance level so as we step into the industry we are a certain level to easily learn and grasp the things.

10. What could you have done to make your co-op experience more fulfilling?

CO-OP WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT

I think I could be more productive at certain times and need to more technical and real engineering oriented person in mechanical industry.I need to develop some sort of leadership qualities and managerial qualities(organizational) and need to work on that.

11. Other comments you wish to make regarding this co-op experience?

It was overall good experience, I enjoyed working there. In the end I would like to thank my supervisor, co workers for having faith in me and believing in me and giving opportunity to work with them. The knowledge, experience I gained and learnt on my co op term would help me to become more successful in future.I am really looking forward to work with them.
