Hi gang, Hi gang, WHATS NEW??? I will be 84 tomorrow. Yep the old odometer is rolling over again. I have lived one year longer than my dad and hewas in better shape than I. At 80 he could lay the union quota of bricks by noonand not one one brick corner could be seen when you looked down the groves.
What did I look like when I was a small kid? See below..............
Mom and dad and the 1928 Ford Model-T. Dad and Mom holding me at 2y at home in Mahaska,Ks.
My brother Don and I at Crystal Springs at Fairbury Neb 1936
My dad is 2nd from the left.^ standing in front of my Mahaska grade school in 1937. I was 6 and in the first class opening day of this school. Today it is a hole in the ground next to the words “School Ave.” at 3:00 o'clock on the map. My house stood on the west end of Kansas Ave on the north side before the bend in the road. There is a trailer house there now. All of those trees were not there, Cuz we had a huge garden. Looks like 95% of the buildings are gone. u The 2015 Kansas QSO Party preliminary results are out one day after logs were due. This year we had 316 logs (52,588 QSOs) which beat our 2014 record of 275 logs. Once again, John/n6mu completed the Kansas Sweep of 105 counties, and he got 104 of them already on Saturday! We had 44 1x1 calls on the air including 16 mobiles. Final results will be out in about a week. Look for 2015 Results on the KSQP web site: http://www.ksqsoparty.org/. 73, Bob, w0bhKSQP Coordinator
u Now, "Clarity on Parity" -- the Video! In August, the ARRL acted to address objections and concerns being raised by representatives of community and neighborhood associations regarding the Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015 -- H.R. 1301 and S. 1685. "Clarity on Amateur Radio Parity" made it clear that the bill would not create new federal policy with respect to outdoor amateur antennas, nor would it require homeowners associations to approve huge radio towers. Now, anew video -- "The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2015 -- Separating Fact from Fiction" -- doubles down on the arguments contained in the League's August statement. ARRL President Kay Craigie, N3KN, said the video will be made available on Capitol Hill to make sure that Members of Congress have correct information, instead of misrepresentations.

Communications Emergencies don't just happen in bad weather.
Almost 800,000 people experienced a near total communication lapse during the World Series Parade.
In that scenario, a 2 meter handheld would serve as a nice backup, but only if there is someone on the other endto assist.
If you had been in distress in that crowd, what methods would you use to summon assistance? Do you carry a handheld with you on a daily basis? Is your Go Kit ready right now?
Good things to consider as we approach the snow & ice season in KC, where the weather can change in a matter of hours.
Our November 9th meeting will be a SHOW and TELL, featuring What's in your Go BAG....be sure to bring us your innovations and show them off!

They weren't in my pockets. Suddenly I realized I must have left themin the car. Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My husbandhas scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car's ignition. He's afraid that the car could be stolen. As I looked around theparking lot, I realized he was right. The parking lot was empty. Iimmediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed thatI had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen.
Then I made the most difficult call of all to my husband:I left mykeys in the car and it's been stolen."
There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice. Are you kidding me?" hebarked, "I dropped you off!"
Now it was my turn to be silent. Embarrassed, I said, "Well, comeand get me."
He retorted, I will, as soon as I convince this cop that I didn'tsteal your damn car!"

Qantas Airlines: Repair Division
In case you need a laugh: Remember, it takes a college degree to fly a plane but only a high school diploma to fix one. After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a 'Gripe Sheet' which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems; document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the Gripe Sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humour. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers. By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never, ever, had an accident.. P: Left inside main tyre almost needs replacement.S: Almost replaced left inside main tyre. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: Something loose in cockpit.S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield.S: Live bugs on back-order. P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud.S: DME volume set to more believable level. P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.S: That's what friction locks are for. P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode. P: Suspected crack in windshield.S: Suspect you're right. P: Number 3 engine missing.S: Engine found on right wing after brief search. P: Aircraft handles funny............ (I love this one!)

u Ahhhh, but like a good Popiel commercial - "Wait, there's more". as it turns out, the source of my broadband QRM is the entire modem IT'SELF. Turning off the WiFi feature did narrow the pulses, but didn't totally rid me of the "garbage" - I have some toridial choke forms (as suggested by a couple of folks) on the way, so hopefully it will take care of the problem. Once I put together screen pix of the spectrum-analyzer (before & after), and write this up, it will be going to the Engineering dept of CenLink, PLUS to the FCC. I also have a contact who will get it to the ARRL, so hopefully a bit of fire will be ignited under this. Let's face it - Part 15 is a cruel joke... it's not very effective, and I suspect involves how much money a manufacturer gets to the "right place", to allow this junk to proliferate in the market. Switching power-supplies, plastic cabinets, no RFI bypass or choke components, and "get it out the door" designs are ALL at fault... but as the XYL reminded me "Only YOU GUYS care about it, 'cause most people are oblivious to the problem" Tom - WØEAJ

u Hi, Tom from Colorado - this was sent to me, after a discussion about a chap needing a charger for a UV-5 series Bao Feng H/T. I too, have experienced the problem with the chargers failing (too much current going through the tiny chip (made of "unobtanium"). This is a mod that prevents that... should anybody ask.
Getting cooler out here on "the ranch" - might actually see a bit of snow this Wednesday - not unusual at 6,320 feet MSL. 73 Tom Dailey - WØEAJ
u My (and K5JAX's) experience with the Hex Beam...
My very good friend Roger had a hex-beam.. terrific antenna, which was resonant everywhere they said it would be. Only one problem - the construction techniques used, mean that these antennas ARE VERY PRONE TO FAILURE. These antennae will perform wonderfully IF you don't experience strong & sustained winds. His QTHis between Wiggins & Ft. Morgan, Colorado and as such, endure some pretty prevalant winds of "stout" nature. What happened was that one tie-point (from the loop to the outside) failed, then the remainder failed... when it was taken down, we also found that the fiberglas rod that's used to mount it, had also BROKEN. The factory's offer was to send him parts to repair it - unfortunately, that does NOT address the basic problem.
Caveat Emptor - but if you live in a fairly windless area, you'll love it.

u http://www.amsat.org/amsat/features/sounds/firstsat.html Yep, it was in October of 1957 on 20.007 mHz, and most hams of the time had general-coverage receivers, so many listened to it. The "beep" carried no telemetry, but the message it sent to the West was Loud & Clear!... "We got here first!". A fellow up the street, from where we lived in Mission, KS, had a Hallicrafters SX-62 receiver*, and let me listen... I had no idea that some 10 years later, I'd be involved in US Navy Satellite Communications. *Must be why I've had 2 of those, and am going to restore another I have right now. Tom Dailey, W0EAJ - [email protected] PS - I don't think I'll ever forget, keying up the AN/SSC-3 portable SATCOM terminal (being tested on Guam Island) and hearing my own voice come back to me, about 2½ seconds later, from a round-trip of about 45,000 miles.
