PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Hi folks, aren’t we blessed with great weather conditions here in the mid-west.

Can’t help but think we should be cruising and touring, as we can drive without

AC in the old jalopy this time of year. Cruise Night at MUGS UP will bring back

memories for sure. Anita in her teens was a car hop for a time at a local drive-in

in Bolivar, Missouri, can’t remember if I tipped her with money or just a Kiss.

None the less Mugs Up has car hops and window trays; I’ll bet Ray has his camera

on location.

This month’s Sept 22 meeting is pizza night so come hungry then the regular

business meeting will follow.

Saturday the 23rd is a must see driving tour. I’ve lived in the area for nearly 50

years and haven’t seen the views we are going to see on this trip. Hopefully we

will have clear skies for the morning drive and we will have handouts with route

sheet and description of stops we will be making. The tour is only about three

and a half hours long not including lunch and mostly out of your cars at scenic

points. Plan some walking but no steps or at least none that you half to take.

One could drive a Model A on this slow tour. Just to keep the tradition going , we

will end the drive at Gates BBQ on State Ave, in KCK.

The Fall Tour has been scheduled for October 13 and 14 at Jefferson City. We will

meet in Sedalia for lunch at the train car restaurant, Kehde’s Box Car BBQ, and

from there to Jefferson City. We are touring Modern Litho where our Bulb Horn

magazine is printed, the State Capital, and Auto World at Fulton, along with other

places along the way.

Change the oil, lube, and check the tires were going to do this!!!

Dan Richardson

VINTAGE MOTOR CAR CLUB OF AMERICA KANSAS CITY CHAPTER

MONTHLY MEETING August 25, 2017

The August, 2017, meeting of the Vintage Motor Car Club of America was held at Faith Presbyterian Church. The meeting was called to order by President Dan Richardson at 7:05 P.M.. President Richardson called for health reports. Maurica Campbell reported that Bob Gentry has lost a lot of energy due a recent bout of pneumonia, but is on the road to recovery. She also related an account where he caught the garden hose with a weed whacker and in the process broke the spigot on an outdoor faucet. Additionally, he lost interest in showing his Falcon at a recent show when the Falcon failed to make it out of his neighborhood. He lost the tread off of one tire and the brakes failed on his attempt to take it back home. Dan Richardson thanked the members who responded with cards and letters for the loss of his brother. The next order of business was the approval of the minutes of the July meeting. Secretary Higdon reported that the minutes were published in the latest issue of the distributor. The minutes were approved as published. The treasurer’s report was requested from Gary Barth, our illustrious treasurer. Gary again reviewed his efforts to open a new bank account and reported that our account at National Bank of Kansas City has now been reactivated successfully and money has been transferred from our Bank Midwest account. Gary announced that there was no other activity during the month. The treasurer’s report was approved as given. Dan Richardson displayed a stack of VMCCA windshield stickers and offered them to the members.

Under new business, Dan reported that a representative from the Faith Presbyterian Church had visited before the meeting and presented him with a rental contract for the coming year. As we had suspected, the contract proposes an increase in monthly rent for our meeting facilities to $50.00 per month. Upon Dan’s request for approval, the attending members voted to accept the new terms. Also, the representative presented Dan with a list of repair items needed for the church building and grounds and asked if we could help with any of the items. Dan reviewed the items with the members and said he would email the list to the members for consideration. It was agreed that we would review the list and select a day when we might get a work crew together to perform some or all of the necessary tasks. Dan announced that there would be no formal board meeting for August, but asked that the board members stay after the close of the regular meeting to hold a short board meeting. Sign up sheets were passed around for members to provide meeting refreshments and for volunteers to develop and lead future tours. The 2017 Christmas party will be held at V’s restaurant on Saturday, December 2, 2017, from 1P.M TO 3P.M. Steve Wolff announced that tickets were still available for the 50/50 pot. A possible September cruise was suggested to Kaw Point at the convergence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers. No definite time or date was established. A possible tour with an overnight stay on the weekend of October 13 and 14 was discussed. No destination was determined. Bob Saderstrom talked about a monthly car show held one Friday each month in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Possible future tour destinations were discussed. President Richardson again displayed the map he had developed and presented at the last meeting showing previous tour destinations. Kermit Beeson told about his recent acquisition of a 1929 Ford Model A tudor sedan that he found in Peculiar, Missouri. Someone mentioned that it was about time for a bus story, but Ray Council was not in attendance. Where were you, Ray? We hope you are not having a problem. At this point, the meeting broke for refreshments provided by Diana Poole and Vaneta Beeson.

After the break, Bob Saderstrom gave a very informative review of a solar powered fan he recently acquired from the Hillcrest Thrift Store. The original owner was apparently so thrilled with the item that it was given to Hillcrest in the original packaging unused. Bob is so fortunate to be able to obtain such rare items through his association with Hillcrest. Dwight Poole was called upon to give a report on progress being made to restore his 1956 Thunderbird. This is a vehicle Dwight has owned for several years without paying much attention to it. Dwight’s son has taken the car to bring it back to life. Dwight announced that the car is now about 90% finished and he hopes to be driving it by the end of the year. Good luck, Dwight. We hope to see the car soon. Don Oberholtz read a letter that was sent to him in July, 1991. Don had purchased a 1947 DeSoto suburban from the daughter of the original owner. Don had seen the car through the years and occasionally tried to buy it, but was told it was not for sale. Some time after the original owner died, Don was contacted by the owner’s daughter and told that they were ready to sell the car. After Don purchased the car, he told the daughter that he would appreciate it if she could give him some details regarding the history of the vehicle. In response, she sent Don a nice lengthy letter telling about things they had done in the car and that her father has used it to pull a horse trailer in his business. It was a very interesting letter. Don also discussed the 1947 Chrysler coupe that was customized to look like a Zippo lighter for promotion purposes. The lighter addition added 2,000 pounds to the weight of the car and eventually the suspension and the tires failed under the added weight. No one seems to know what happened to the car. Bob Saderstrom was the lucky winner of the 50/50 pot. Dan Richardson confessed that there would be no “Present to Win” pot because he left the wheel at home, Jim Clock said that there would be a Model T exhibit at the Kansas City Car Museum on September 30, of Model Ts invited for display. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 P.M. Respectfully submitted

David Higdon, Secretary

HISTORY OF A 1926 CHEVROLET TOURING

By Mike Welsh

A car club friend, Warren Hunting, bought this car for his father, Leonard Hunting, in

1956 just before Easter. Warren took a few photos which he still has of the car when he

first saw it from the south side sitting in a barn near Chilhowee, Missouri. He also has a

photograph of hooking the Chevrolet up via a tow bar to his 1951 Ford to make the trip

back to Independence, Missouri. After cleaning the car and wiping it with an oily rag, he

gave it a test drive around the neighborhood and found that it was a peppy, good driving

car without much sign of paint. The doors on the passenger side plus another area

under where the top rested when down showed evidence of the original black paint.

Leonard hardly drove the Touring because he could not decide whether to restore it or

preserve it.

Now that Leonard owned the Touring, he ran across a 1927 Chevrolet Sedan which

was parking on the street in downtown Kansas City just a block or two west of Main

Street. Leonard made a deal and brought that car home as a parts car for the touring.

In 1980 Mike Welsh bought the 1926 Chevrolet Touring from Leonard’s along with the

1927 Chevrolet parts car. Mike first saw the car in Leonard’s basement garage in

Independence. As he entered the garage he could not see the car but going further

back and then turning ninety degrees to the left there was the Touring but he still could

not see the car because of all the cardboard boxes and other items that were stored on

top of it. Slowly Mike and

Leonard rolled the car

forward, making the right

turn and moving the boxes

off of the car. Then Mike

rolled the car out of the

garage and down the street

onto a borrowed open trailer

pulled by a 1970 Mercury.

Once home, Mike rolled the

Touring off the trailer and

into his garage. Later Mike

put in a battery and a set of

points and the Touring fired

Page 7: Kansas City Chapter DISTRIBUTOR - Hemmingsclubs.hemmings.com/vmccakc/images/2017_09_VMCCA_DISTRIBUTO… · Kermit Beeson told about his recent acquisition of a 1929 Ford Model A tudor

up. A few test drives followed which were just plain FUN.

At a later date, Mike installed a new clutch and drove the car to Veterans Hospital for a

car show put on by the Kansas City Chapter of the Veteran Motor Car Club of America.

This was an annual event to allow some of the patients to come out to the parking lot to

view some vintage vehicles. The touring ran great but on the way home with Paul Gish,

the Touring overheated with steam shooting out the radiator cap and later the muffler

came off and rolled to the edge of the road. After adding some water and carefully

picking up the muffler, Mike did make it home.

In 1983 Mike drove the Touring to Westridge Elementary where Beth and Andy were

going to school so that the other kids could see and sit in the car.

Mike did drive the Touring to Colvin Gish’s house for a small car show in his drive-way.

Sometime in the 1980’s Mike’s family drove the touring around in the back yard. This

was the first time Mike’s son Andy had driven a car, he was about 12 or 13 years old.

Also along for the ride was his mother Judy, his sister Beth and the beagle named

Betsy.

Sunday, June 2, 1985 was the date of the Ararat Shrine Temple and the Associated

Antique Car Clubs of Kansas City 16th Annual Antique Car Show at the Blue Ridge Mall

in Independence, Missouri. The outdoor show featured more than 300 antique, special-

interest and classic automobiles with entries of 27 car clubs along with all the uniformed

units of the Shrine entertaining. The Blue Ridge Mall was an enclosed mall and Mike

had been asked to display the Touring inside the mall during the week prior to the show.

Mike’s wife was embarrassed by fact that the Touring still in the “as found in a barn

condition” was on

display inside the mall

where she regularly

shopped. Mike did

convince her to go to

the mall and see the

car. As they walked up

to the Touring where it

was displayed next to

a very nicely restored

Ford Model A and a

Chevrolet Corvette,

there was a sign which

said “1926 Chevrolet

Touring Owned by

Page 8: Kansas City Chapter DISTRIBUTOR - Hemmingsclubs.hemmings.com/vmccakc/images/2017_09_VMCCA_DISTRIBUTO… · Kermit Beeson told about his recent acquisition of a 1929 Ford Model A tudor

Michael Welsh No Relation to Judith.” After the show when Mike was driving it home, it

quit running. Mike called a friend, Roland Heriford, who lived nearby and was also

earlier at the car show. They checked this and that and it finally did make the trip on to

Mike’s house.

During Mike’s ownership of the car, it was always stored in a garage. First it was in

Mike’s garage, then in his neighbor’s garage during construction to enlarge the garage,

then back in Mike’s garage and then it was stored in Bob Ehinger’s building.

Mike finally decided that he was not going to get around to driving the Touring in its

preserved condition nor was he going to restore it plus the fact that his very generous

storage agreement was coming to an end. The Touring was advertised for sale in

VMCCA, AACA and VCCA publication resulting in a sale from the Vintage Chevrolet

Club of America ad.

On July 1, 2017 the Touring was sold to Brian Haase and it traveled in an enclosed

trailer to a new home in Piqua, Ohio to begin the next segment of its life with a very

proud new owner.

And now the next chapter of the story begins –

Mike,

Thank you for the written history and pictures! That is exactly what I was looking for.

The pictures of the car in the mall are awesome. Very cool!

Work has been slow on the Chevy, but I have made forward progress since getting it

home. The entire body (top and bottom) has been treated to a Gibbs Brand oil bath. It’s

basically super-WD-40 with rust inhibitors and because it does not contain any silicone,

I will be able to paint the car (eventually?) without issue.

After putting a battery in the car, I attempted to start it without success. Further

inspection discovered a bad coil lead and two bad spark plug leads, so I installed a

brand new set of spark plugs and wires. After dealing with fuel and carburetor issues, I

was able to get it to fire, but it ran very poorly. Testing showed that the coil measured

very weak on the high-tension side, so I installed a new modern 6V coil. After

disconnecting the vacuum tank and filling the carburetor bowel manually, I was able to

get it to start up and idle! Hurrah!

The carb and vacuum were both taken off the car to be inspected, cleaned and rebuilt.

The carb wasn’t too bad, but it did have some contaminants the needed to be flushed

out. After thorough cleaning and a set of new gaskets, it’s now back on the car. The

vacuum tank seemed to have a number of leaks and the bung that feeds the carb had

Page 9: Kansas City Chapter DISTRIBUTOR - Hemmingsclubs.hemmings.com/vmccakc/images/2017_09_VMCCA_DISTRIBUTO… · Kermit Beeson told about his recent acquisition of a 1929 Ford Model A tudor

http://clubs.hemmings.com/vmccakc/index.htm

broken free from the bottom of the tank. I re-soldered that and I finished reassembling it

last night with fresh gaskets. It is now ready to put back on the car.

I dropped the gas tank to inspect the interior and found it to be decent. This weekend, I

will be shaking it with a chain and a few nuts inside to knock rust/dirt off of the interior

surfaces. I cleaned the inside of the vacuum tank by letting it soak in vinegar for three

days. It appeared to do a great job, so I think it will work nicely for the fuel tank too. I

have concerns about using tank sealants, so I will oil the tank liberally and always keep

the tank full. Ethanol-free gasoline is rare around here, but I have a local contact for

aviation fuel. It is alcohol-free and contains low amounts of lead. While it is more

expensive, with the amount of driving that I plan on doing, it should work very well.

The interior cleaned up well. I added some seat foam and a couple of Indian blankets

on top of the existing material. I used a number of female-threaded neodymium

magnets to secure the blankets to the body. The blankets shouldn’t flap around or fly

out of the car while in motion. I also removed the top, wrapped it up in plastic and put it

in storage. The material is in rough shape and I don’t want to lose any of it while driving.

I’ve found a gentleman in Cincinnati who specializes in antique cars of this kind and I

may have him redo the top next year. I’m still undecided on that.

The next project after the fuel tank will be the wheels. I’ve decided to use steam to clean

the spokes. It’s low-moisture and shouldn’t create any rust issues on the (oiled) fellows

and rims. I have some linseed oil with beeswax that should help the spokes swell, stay

protected and look better.

I found a very cool and period-correct Duplex toolbox to keep with the car as well as a

Tilt-Lock “fatman” steering wheel. I met a gentleman 30 miles south of me in Dayton,

Ohio who has been to Hershey every year for the past 40 years. He purchased the

wheel 35 years ago and it had been sitting in this closet since then. It’s in excellent

condition and has a functioning key and hub lock. The linked picture is from his ad and

doesn’t show how nice it really is. I have a couple machinist friends who can help me

get that installed this winter. Hopefully it just needs a hub adapter made.

I hope all is well with you and your family. Has Bob filled the empty spot in his

warehouse yet? I’ll continue to send you updates about the car and what I have been

tinkering with.

Cheers,

Brian Haase

SEPTEMBER CRUISE NIGHT

I don’t know if it is in the name of the establishment, the special take on the hamburger

or maybe past memories but for some reason Mug’s Up drew our membership from all

corners of the city – Olathe, Kansas City Kansas, Lone Jack and Kansas City North.

This had to be a testament of interest as there is enough road construction going on

around town that the drive to Independence during evening rush hour could be

intimidating. Thirteen cars were present at the drive-in delivering 24 hungry diners.

Once again we had spectacular weather which encouraged everyone to get out of their

cars to roam around and visit. The drive-in did an excellent job in taking orders and

delivering food to hang

on our car door windows.

I was a little concerned

that they may not like

having us hang around

for as long as we did but

they expressed they were

pleased to have us and

there were available

spots for their regulars.

One of the women

helping with the

delivery of the food

reminded us that this

Mugs Up has been in

operation for 60

years.

SEPTEMBER 23rd TOUR

Meet just outside the gates to the National World War I Memorial at 9:00 AM. From Main you turn west at 27th which is then called Memorial Drive - there should be plenty of curb parking. Our tour takes us to several sites on the West side of Kansas City, Missouri through the west bottoms over to Kaw Point on the east side of Kansas City, Kansas. We will be accessing these sites without having to use highways so driving speeds will be appropriate for anyone wishing to drive an earlier model antique. We will be having lunch at a Gates BBQ before tour disbands.
