STORY BY RACHAEL HEDGCOTHPHOTOS BY GARY ROHMAN
-
ts been roughly 10 years since Kristy and Carl Reincke bid
farewell to their suburban life in Lenexa, Kan. And they have
never looked back.
Thats not to say it wasnt an adjustment to leave 2,600 square
feet of living space, a big yard and a spacious garage.
But for the Reinckes, the trade-offs have been well worth the
sacrifices in space.
Long-settled in their 1,650-square-foot, fourth-floor condo in
Kansas Citys historic Union Hill, Kristy reflected back on the couples
decision to leave their Lenexa home.
That was a lot of space for the two of us, so it was easy to
downsize, said Kristy. Condo living appealed to us because of the
maintenance-free living.
The couple began exploring condos downtown, in the West Bottoms
and on the Plaza, and ultimately fell in love with the iconic Greenlease
Cadillac Building on McGee Street.
Built in 1918 by Robert Greenlease to house the Greenlease Motor
Car Company, the building was later sold to Hallmark Cards, Inc.,
which used the building for storage for 20 years. The property was
eventually sold to local developer Bob Frye of Union Hill Development
Group, who renovated the building into 29 luxury condominiums.
Modeled after the 1920s New York apartment house style, the
condos were completed in 2006. The buildings athletic club, once
the dealerships showroom, still retains original features such as
marble floors, high ceilings and columns topped with original
Cadillac logos.
The Reinckes came across the building during the initial phase of
construction and opted to purchase a two-bedroom, two-bath unit.
Kristy said the couples list of must-haves included an open floor
plan and two bedrooms, including a master suite with a large bath
and a walk-in closet. Additionally after enjoying the convenience of
a personal garage two heated garage parking spaces were ideal.
It was a fun process, said Kristy of being involved in the
construction process. The floor plan was already in place, but we
got to pick out tile and we changed a few other things. We would
look around and see what everyone else was doing in their condos
and we got to know our neighbors. There were residents ranging
from young people on up to empty-nesters. A lot of the same
people are still here.

For Kristy, a now-retired regional sales manager, and Carl, a
software engineer, the condo offered a fresh new lifestyle.
We wanted to be in the heart of the city so we would be close
to cultural events, the arts and restaurants, said Kristy.
While the couple enjoys amenities such as the popular Martini
Corner and Liberty Memorial located within walking distance of
their urban dwelling, they are also perfectly content to enjoy the
city from their soaring windows.
Easily the condos most notable and coveted feature, a
wonderful wall of glass frames an inviting outdoor balcony and
sweeping views of the Kansas City horizon.
I love that our windows have a great view of the downtown
skyline, said Kristy.
With azure skies and deck chairs beckoning, savoring the sights
and sounds of Kansas City from an elevated al fresco perch is an
everyday treat.
Inside the condo, a cheerful fusion of engaging artwork and vibrant
colors attest to the dynamic personalities of Kristy and Carl.
From the front door, the floor plan leads into an open space
outfitted with an efficient galley kitchen, dining area, living room and PLEASE TURN THE PAGE
laundry room. Maple cabinetry, granite countertops, an expansive
island, crown molding and hardwood flooring are among the
elegant appointments in the condos main living area.
The layout is topped off with a roomy master suite and a second
bedroom that serves as an office (95% of the time) and a guest
suite, thanks to a discreet Murphy bed that folds up into the wall.
Above all, the entire condo also doubles as a canvas upon which
the Reinckes can showcase their diverse art collection.
We have always enjoyed decorating and collecting art, said
Kristy. We have found a lot of our art at the Brookside Art Fair,
Westport Art Fair and the Plaza Art Fair. We have also collected
pieces during our travels to destinations such as Italy, Germany,
Ireland, Iceland, Mexico, San Diego, Denver, Jackson Hole and
Seattle. The end result is a collection of art that makes us happy.
Certainly the most eye-catching pieces are the 35 masks that
hang on a metal display rack on the main living areas wall.
Whimsical, comical, curious, intriguing and serene faces of
myriad materials seem to spill secrets of mystery and merriment.
While many of the masks were procured via domestic travels,
many were also discovered in the City of Fountains.
Our mask collection started when we attended a fundraiser for
the Mattie Rhodes Center, said Kristy.
Of Masks & Modern Spirit

-
Based in Kansas City, Mo., the Mattie Rhodes Center is
a nonprofit agency that provides a holistic approach to
individual and family well-being through social services,
behavioral health counseling and the arts.
Children in the Mattie Rhodes art program and local
artists donated masks for the annual event, said Kristy. We
acquired several of our masks from that event over the years.
She added with a laugh, The wall is full now and we cant
buy any more masks!
Elsewhere around the condo, abstract paintings, a collection
of lamps and other creative dcor lend a prismatic flair to the
homes design palette and contribute to a decidedly modern
sense style.
Above the glass dining table, a one-of-a-kind pendant light
fixture, created by a Lawrence, Kan., artist, grants multi-color
interest to the room.
Hence the reason for the different colored dining chairs,
said Kristy. We love color.
An artistic and animated pack of miniature dogs,
showcasing various looks and poses, play quietly in the
corner of the master bedroom. (Clearly, they make the
perfect low-maintenance pets.)
When not relaxing in their cozy environs, Kristy and
Carl often enjoy dinners out with neighbors, attending
performances at the Sprint Center or exercising at the
Union Hill Athletic Club inside the building.
Further, in the warmer months, Kristy indulges her inner
gardener with a miniature patch of cucumbers, peas, green
beans, carrots, onions, lettuce, spinach and tomatoes.
There is a woman who owns a nearby house with an
adjoining lot and she created an urban garden project called
Sprout, said Kristy.
Along with several other area residents, Kristy rents out a
modest plot in the 32nd Street Trophy Garden where she
can grow vegetables to her hearts content all within a
short stroll of home.
As the warmer temperatures slip ever closer, the days to
come will bring plenty of opportunities to tap into all that
Kansas City offers.
We enjoy walking to the Memorial, Penn Valley Park,
Crown Center, Union Station and other places whenever we
get the chance, said Kristy.
For the Reinckes, city living is fine living indeed.

Couple savors family, friends and theKansas City scene with chic spare condo.
Story by Rachael Hedgcoth Photos by Gary Rohman

fter her illustrious career flying the United skies
as a flight attendant and his 29-year post as
principal and ultimately superintendent with
the Hays, Kan., school district, Sharon and Will
Roth have finally settled down.
She still flies to visit girlfriends and the couple
are both very active socially and enjoy traveling
domestically and internationally, but their lives are
now defined more by leisurely pursuits rather than
by professional demands.
Married for 33 years, both Sharon and Will grew
up in Iowa, but their path eventually led to Hays
where they resided for nearly 30 years and raised
their children.
After Wills retirement in 2013, the couple
relocated to a two-bedroom condo they had
owned in Denver, Colo., since 2006.
Along with their little pup Gucci, the pair divided
their time between Denver and a vacation home
near their children in Kansas City which they
purchased in 2010, gutted and completely
renovated.
Both the Denver condo and the century-old
Kansas City home proved great opportunities
for Sharon to explore her increasing affinity for
interior design.
She received tremendously positive feedback
on her dashing Denver condo as well as the
antique dcor she incorporated into the Kansas
City Bell Street residence. In fact, many friends
assumed Sharon had hired an interior designer for
both residences.
Her interest and confidence in designing stylish
living spaces continued to grow.

In recent years, Sharon and Will reevaluated their
long-term housing plans and decided to move
closer to their children and grandchildren in
Kansas City. Once again, they were faced with
finding a new home, and once again, condo
living seemed ideal.
As we are nearing the later years of our life,
my husband and I decided it was important to
live a minimalist style, explained Sharon. We
wanted no yard care, no basement, no stairs,
less room so we would be forced to rid
ourselves of stuff and a community garage
so we wouldn't have the sole responsibility for
the upkeep but would maintain the warmth and
safety of a closed area for cars.
The couple zeroed in on Kansas Citys
signature shopping district its Seville-inspired
Country Club Plaza. They sold their Denver
condo, as well as their Kansas City home, after
finding a residence in the elegant high-rise
Carlton Plaza Condominiums.
Upon closing, Sharon was again afforded the
opportunity to delve into color combinations,
lighting options and furniture elements.
When the dust settled after a complete
renovation, the Roths 812-square-foot unit was
dressed in a modern fusion of cherry wood,
walnut trim and sleek furnishings.
Sharon and Will moved into their second-floor
home in the 12-story, 60-unit Carlton Plaza
in 2014.
As luck would have it, they soon had the
opportunity to purchase the condo located a
quick elevator ride beneath their second-floor
unit. They planned for the additional condo
also a one-bedroom unit to be their
designated entertainment space and guest
quarters. Purchased in January 2015, Sharon
affectionately calls the 879-square-foot first-floor
condo their party place.
The couple toyed with the various ways they
could style their second unit and discussed how
to most efficiently use the space.
Always eager to branch out in new design
directions, Sharon and Will decided an urban
spirit would suit their spare condo.
UPSTAIRS ... AND DOWN
CONCRETE AND STEEL CHARM

After studying different designs, we felt that industrial
would fit our needs the best, said Sharon. We found a very
innovative contractor who was willing to try new and different
ideas. Dan Malone was on board the whole time demolition
through reconstruction. Our main priority was lots of storage
space and a great entertaining opportunity.
Embarking on yet another extensive remodel, they had the
bedroom walls removed, choosing instead to redefine the
entire space in a way that merged kitchen basics and
conversation areas with sleeping solutions and bath essentials.
From the curved cherry wall in the entryway to the exposed
duct work, electrical conduit and steel dcor, the condo
showcases a distinctly industrial-contemporary persona.
I just wanted to do something different, said Sharon.
She chose to blend raw, stripped-down elements and a
utilitarian sense of form and function hallmarks of this
sophisticated style.
She incorporated stained concrete flooring throughout
the condo which captures the coarse essence of industrial
design through its mottled, rusty appearance.
I didnt want the floor to look perfect, said Sharon.
The condo also features concrete board ceilings which add
visual interest thanks to subdued block patterns and shades
of gray.
The kitchen and dining area, or party room as Sharon
and Will call it, feature pared-down appliances including a
microwave, Wolf warming drawer, an under-counter and
full refrigerator, a U-Line wine cooler and a dishwasher
but no stovetop.
-
We love to hang out and sleep down here, said Sharon of her
grandchildrens visits. We have so much fun!
A steel-covered pocket door opens to the spacious baths
tangerine accent wall, antique polished-bronze fixtures, track
lighting and extra-large concrete shower all intentionally
low-maintenance.
Further, Sharon worked with contractor Malone to utilize five
massive sliding barn doors to conceal the generous closet space
in the sleeping and office area.
While the Roths may have whittled down their living space
from what they once had, they find that their two condos serve
them well.
As relatively new residents of Kansas City, they now enjoy the
Plaza up close and personal, take strolls through area parks and
attend shows at the Kansas City Music Hall and the Kauffman
Center for the Performing Arts.
Additionally, they cherish the time they can now spend with their
nearby children and grandchildren enjoying everything from festive
birthdays, youth basketball games and weekend sleepovers to
random get-togethers and Kansas City events.
Perhaps the only question that remains is, What will Sharon
design next?
One of my strong philosophies of designing is get what you
want whether it is what the books suggest or not, said Sharon.
For example, every kitchen appliance I have is from a different
manufacturer, and at some time, I will probably find a unique
antique piece that I will slip into my industrial-designed condo.
A granite composite Blanco sink, white-glass-front cabinets,
pendant and track lighting, exposed brick and a custom steel art
piece round out the kitchen area which cheerfully welcomes good
food and good company.
A flat-screen TV, suspended by adjustable chains, and remote-
controlled Napoleon electric fireplace create an engaging setting
for dining at the expansive quartz-topped eat-at island, square
quartz table and glass bar table.
In the cozy living area, a white leather sectional, Kandinsky
artwork and a wall of windows framing idyllic Country Club Plaza
views merge in an uncomplicated synthesis of upscale panache.
Obviously, I am definitely into minimalist design, said Sharon.
And I firmly believe in if you like it, go with it!
When out-of-town friends visit or a grandchild wants to sleep over,
the first-floor condo serves as the perfect sanctuary thanks to a
sizable bed, small office area and spacious bath.

ituated in a beautiful home in the greater Kansas City area, this guest bedroom is nothing short of spectacular. Passionate
about the life and works of William Morris, the father of the Arts and Crafts movement in England (1834-1896), the homeowner
was honored to have toured Morris Kelmscott Manor in England and instinctively gravitated towards the look and appeal of
Medieval and Renaissance England, which is the time period Morris adored and from which he based all of his designs. The client
was then subsequently motivated to create a William Morris-inspired Tudor room of her own.

Over the years, she compiled a three-ring notebook of ideas and design elements she wanted to bring to life.
With the help of Susan Sage, interior designer for Picture Perfect Interiors and with general contractor Terry Skilling
of Rhino Builders, Inc., her dream came to stunning fruition, pulling together the products and elements necessary
to complete the authentic Tudor ambiance she desired.
Skilling was highly instrumental in achieving the exquisite outcome. Partnering with skilled craftsmen and artisans,
he harmoniously married all aspects of the room, most notably the ceiling, walls, doors, windows, flooring and lighting,
to produce a room that not only catches the eye but captures the heart.
The wall panels were designed and crafted of quarter sawn white oak that enjoy a dark stain, giving
the appearance of Tudor paneling. The crown molding has intentionally been positioned slightly down
from the ceiling to allow for LED uplights.
All of the doors in the room are also quarter sawn white oak, attached with ornate hinges. The
escutcheon plates and knobs help set the stage for the look and feel of the Tudor time period.
Taking center stage is the Eastern King bed and customized headboard designed to align with the
design of Morris early 16th century bed and the accompanying bed linens provide homage to Morris
bedroom at Kelmscott Manor in England. The quilt upon the wall Morris and Friends was designed
and made by Michele Hill from Adelaide, Australia.
The rooms original windows were not centered, so Skilling and his crew removed them and rebuilt
the wall to center them perfectly. The Kolbe windows have a quarter sawn white oak interior and clad
exterior. The curry colored shades are Hunter Douglas Duette Powerise.
The Tudor-style leaded glass panels for the windows were designed taking the design elements from
the Montacute House, a Tudor manor in Somerset, England.
Additional elements in the room include the wood floors which are made of eight-inch wide prefinished
planks, intentionally of a lighter color to harmonize wonderfully with the darker elements of the wall
panels and doors. The Venetian chandelier, with its subtle low lights, gives the appearance of candles.
The wallpaper is Morris Chrysanthemum pattern in Pale Olive.
And while most works of art typically adorn the walls, the pice de rsistance in this grand room is best
viewed when looking up. Although not a Morris design, it spoke to the homeowner and she knew it had
to be in the room. She saw this ceiling in the Hassler Hotel at the top of the Spanish Steps in Rome and what is seen
in this room now is an interpretation of that design.
Nearly 20 years of thought went into this room, and the result is a masterpiece in and of itself, noted Skilling.

This Overland Park master bedroom was part of a complete home redesign in 2015.
Ready for an update, it was time to transition to a more modern aesthetic. Starting
essentially from scratch, Suhr worked with the client to take the former traditional landscape
of the room and brought in new accessories, colors, paint and ideas to create a fresh,
modern appeal that entices the senses and brightens the space.
The client loves color and realized this would be an opportunity to have fun, expressed
Suhr. We actually used the bedspread as the inspiration behind the whole room. She had
picked it out from Crate and Barrel and wanted to build off of it.
From this highly colorful bedspread, Suhr pulled out the blue for its fresh and calming
vibe and around that she created a stylish ensemble of upbeat color accented with a spritz
of sophistication.
Using the blue accent wall for a focal point, the client chose to use a gray/tan color
for the remaining walls, allowing for a touch of color without overwhelming the space.
New carpet, fixtures and clean roller shades help to create a crisp and simple look while
simultaneously accentuating the architecture of the space.
While most people tend to go for a matching bedroom set, by intentionally not doing
that in this room, we created a custom and collected look, explained Suhr, noting that the
wood dresser, padded and upholstered linen headboard with nickel nail head accents
and mirrored side tables provide the personality the room desired. By bringing in an eclectic
cast of accessories and furniture, a room can enjoy a customized high-end look without
being stuffy.
Another star of the show is the aforementioned chandelier, which hangs dramatically yet
invitingly from the cove ceiling.
We took out the ceiling fan and replaced it with a sophisticated chandelier, which also
has dimmers, creating a romantic ambiance and allowing for different levels of light in the
room, said Suhr.
By simply adding some color, clean lines, and unique accessories, this room has undergone
a remarkable transformation and seemingly effortless style.

When you walk down the hall and look into that room, you cant help but smile, expressed
Nancy Ward, interior designer and owner of NJW Design. Its the best room in the house.
And Nancy had some decided help when it came to bringing the clients original vision for the
space to life.
She loves color, said Ward, referring to her client, noting that the living room in her former
home was quite sophisticated with a lot of purple and white. The client wanted to get away from
the purple this time, however, but still indulge her love of color. She makes everything fun and
speaks her mind when it comes to what she wants. I wanted it to be perfect, just like she did,
and we achieved that for her.
Like an ambitious treasure hunter, Ward scoured the city to find the best furniture and
accessories she knew this room would embrace. She originally found a bed and nightstand as
a set, but that look just didnt fit.
The client loved the bed, but she was not in favor of the night stands that came with it,
explained Ward. She likes eclectic, pretty things, and doesnt want everything to match.
So Ward completed her mission and discovered the eye-catching mirrored nightstands with
a frosty facade that boast a sophisticated edge.
These will stay in style, and the padded platform bed softens the room and encourages the
mirrors to readily coordinate, said Ward.
Included in the accessories that work together as a team to pull off this look are the playful
silver stars on the wall, the lamps, the mirror, the off white fabrica carpeting, and the splash of
lime green in the flowers atop the armoire. Additionally, a fuchsia colored metal accent piece
with a pearl overlay situated above the headboard chimes in perfectly.
Despite incorporating fresh new appeal to the room, the client still brought in a voice from the
past in the form of her armoire, a designated keeper from her former home.
No matter the space, if its something you love, it never really goes out of style, said
Ward, quoting the late Billy Baldwin, known in interior design circles as the dean of indigenous
decorators.

After their son moved out, the homeowners wanted to turn this room into a guest bedroom, noted
Erika Manuel, interior designer for the Nebraska Furniture Mart Design Gallery. They are all about
family and constantly have people over, and this room now gives them the extra space they need to
accommodate guests.
Among the many strengths of the space is the abundance of light, which adds a natural layer of
warmth and softness. The windows enjoy Hunter Douglas Flat Roman shades with Kasmir stationery
panels. Except for the original hardwood and the plaster-treated walls, Manuel assisted with every
other aspect of bringing this room to life.
The clients style is traditional, but they wanted to do a softer version of that style, said Manuel.
The wife is big on fabrics and gave me some ideas from which to work and it really shows in the
attention we paid to the mix of patterns in the window treatments, the headboard treatment and the
bedding. This room is all about the fabrics!
While the rest of this 1920s abode enjoys stronger colors, this room craved a softer ambiance. With
gold and yellow as the dominant colors, accented by a touch of copper, the space not only invites
peaceful slumber but also a relaxing escape. The warm toffee color of the wooden Hooker Furniture
pieces plays well with the subdued vibe and also directs ones attention to a couple of highlights in the
room the Eastern Accents bedding and the Century Furniture patterned upholstered headboard.
The bedding brought in more of a bluish and silver tone, which was a bit of a stretch for her, but
she really liked it, stated Manuel. She already has several antiques in her home and while the pieces
in this room are new, they give the appearance of being among her original collection.
The Drexel Heritage striped chair in the corner of the room commands a presence of its own, and
is something the client, who frequently retreats to this room to read, envisions being used for greater
purposes.
Although she doesnt have any grandkids yet, she imagines holding a little one some day while
sitting in that chair, smiled Manuel.
The Loloi area rug and the Crystorama light fixture above complete the look.
Going into this project with family in mind, the coordinating and beautiful end results suggest this
room will rarely know an unoccupied period of time.

with them when the ultimately buy their first home. For now, however, they had to work with the space
they had, making the most of the pieces incorporated into while still forecasting what their future needs
and tastes might require.
They did not want pieces that would be temporary, emphasized Ford, who assisted with the selection
of everything, from the bed to the night stand and the dresser, opting for pieces that give a strong nod
to a transitional vibe, blending traditional elements with a modern flair.
We tried to establish balance in the room, creating a mixture of color the client desired and partnering
that with more neutral tones, adding some personality to the space yet also giving it a restful and
peaceful feeling, explained Ford, noting they essentially started the project from the ground up,
providing everything to create the look except for the flooring and the lighting, which was already in place.
We wanted to start clean and fresh, knowing they will add to it over time, said Ford.
Among the featured highlights in the room are the white window treatments with a coral trellis pattern,
which partner easily with the warm feel of the furniture, best described as hardwoods with a stippled
stain wood finish. One of the talking points of the space is the mirrored piece above the headboard of
the bed.
Those are actually four mirrors that I purchased from Uttermost, noted Ford. I simply hung them
side-by-side together to give the appearance of one solid piece. The center of each individual piece is
convex, sticking out against the antiqued mirrored background. These pieces can be easily reconfigured
to create a fresh new design.
Having a master bedroom in an apartment setting may not always offer everything one desires, but
Ford has created a unique look that complements the clients personalities while simultaneously
allowing for change.
As the clients tastes change over the years, the furniture and accessories will grow with them,
she said. I really like the way this room looks and feels now. Its uncluttered and has a great personality
all its own.

We offer a complete line of high quality products to fit any budget andwe carry items that fit into customers decorating and design schemes, noted owner Steve Roberts, who runs this business with his wife Angieand their five employees. We are happy to help customers figure out thestyle and design that best suits their needs and then we fit the productspecifically for the windows.
And Roberts also knows when not to sell something, leaning heavilyon the companys philosophy for honesty and transparency with eachtransaction. This company will not defer to high pressure sales tactics andconsistently works with each customers best interests, style and budgetin mind.
Certain windows simply dont need any coverings, and while this maysurprise some people, we arent in the business of selling products thatreally arent needed, explained Roberts.
Figuring out which windows to cover and which products to use canbe overwhelming and time consuming, but the experts at AffordableBlinds & Shutters know their craft and are more than happy to make theselection and installation process as simple and efficient as possible.
Affordable Blinds & Shutters provides free in-home consultations tolearn what the customer wants. Roberts and his team can show numerousoptions on his tablet and once the choices are narrowed down to a selectfew, samples are brought in to the customers home to choose fabrics, colors and styles.
We are a fully insured shop-at-home dealer so customers can see theproducts in the context of where it will be, Roberts commented. We also
provide an exact quote on the spot, not just an estimate, and that includestaxes, delivery, installation and the products themselves, all in one quote.
One of the main reasons to choose window coverings is for privacy, most notably for bathroom windows and master bedroom windows.
Window coverings also offer a sense of security, noted Roberts, explaining that having them for kids bedroom windows is a motivatingfactor. Window coverings are great for keeping people from lookinginto rooms.
Window coverings also help to shield the interior of the home from theeffects of the sun and are proven products at reducing energy costs.
Some window coverings can reduce energy loss by up to 80%, sosome of those products essentially pay for themselves over time becauseof the energy efficiency they bring to the home, stated Roberts.
Among the most popular window coverings include motorized shades.Roberts stands behind the Hunter Douglas brand, which is known for highquality products and excels in automation and motorization.
Motorized shades allow you to set as many schedules as you want, explained Roberts. You can have them open at sunrise and then close atsunset. You can also have them set on different schedules in other rooms. These can even be controlled from a smart phone while you are awayfrom home.
Other popular items include Hunter Douglas Silhouette windowshadings, Pirouette window shades, and the Nantucket window shadings, which are made of sheer fabric designed to filter out the brightness, glare and UV rays from the sun while also protecting furniture and flooringfrom fading.
After the window coverings are installed, Roberts and his team doa quality check and instruct the customer on how to use the productsand will continue to provide service after the sale. During the first yearafter installation, any parts and labor required for any repairs are free. After that time, the manufacturer's warranty kicks in and and pays forreplacement parts.

STROUD: Yes, shrubs can be rejuvenated by trimming back
overgrowth. For perennials, all herbaceous non-woody plants
can be trimmed to the ground, or to an inch or two above the
ground, what I refer to as stubble. Woody perennials like spirea,
hydrangeas, and rose of Sharon are a judgement call and can
be trimmed to the desired height. All ornamental grasses are
usually trimmed close to the ground also. Dont forget to NOT
trim your spring bloomers or they wont bloom!
KCHS: # "#!"#!####""#!#"# !#""##"#"#"##
STROUD: This is a good time to apply fresh mulch. Your mulch layer
should be 2-3 inches deep if this is the initial mulching. Follow up
years, the layer should be 1-2 inches depending on how much
the mulch has decomposed. If flowers are already started to show,
go ahead and cover them lightly with a thin layer of mulch.
KCHS: #"## !#!#"# "#!## "# "#!"" #!## !#!"#!#
STROUD: A ball and burlap shrub is safer to plant earlier than a
container plant as the root mass is larger and stronger to withstand
the risk of freeze and stressful transplant. In general on an average
year, most shrubs can start being planted in early March.
KCHS: # #" !#""# # # !# ""# !"! # !#!"# #"#! "##!#"!# #! !## ##
STROUD: Now is the time to apply pre-emergent weed control.
This is designed as an effective preventative method of
controlling weeds before they germinate. Crabgrass preventer is
a good example.
KCHS: "#"#"# #""! "# "# "###" "# !"#"#"#!#""#!#! ## "#!#!"# !#""" # "##
STROUD: This is a good time to cleanup any debris out of the beds,
do spring cutbacks or pruning (mentioned above) shovel cut or
straighten up all of the bed edging, install a weed pre-emergent
throughout all beds and mulch. Then you are ready for the season!
KCHS: "#!""# #!"#!##"#!# "
STROUD: This is the time of year when we might have periods where
it can be very dry out. If the weather is nice, hook up your hose for
a day and water your plants. That will really help the health of your
plants and give you something to do on a nice day.

WELCOMINGTulipTulips add bright color and height to containers.
As a bulb flower, its easiest to purchase already-
blooming pots in the spring and nestle the plants
in your container.
HyacinthThese fragrant bloomers and vibrant colors make
them a staple to the spring mix. Purchase them
in a pot before the blossoms have opened to
include in your planter. Transfer to the ground at
a later date to enjoy them the following spring.
Spotted Dead NettleLooking for a great edging that drapes over your
planter? While the spotted dead nettle wont
bloom until May or June, its attractive foliage is a
great addition to a spring mix.
PlantersIts fun to get creative with your planters. Pot
options range from basic colors to mosaics,
clay to ceramic. Boxes and crates in various
colors, materials and sizes make great pairings.
Repurposing items opens up the opportunity for
a fun and whimsical look. Watering cans, pails,
tires, wagons, rain boots and buckets are just a
few ideas for planters.

BloomsMothers Day before you plant your flowers. Butwith the sights and sounds of early spring upon
us, container planting can bring about spring
cheer while were waiting for warmer days.
Theres a number of plants that can stand a
little chill and a gorgeous spring container is easy
to put together. Use a mix of colors if youre going
for a showy look or use one color if you prefer a
more elegant appearance.
Here are some hardy bloomers that arebegging to adorn your porch:
Pansies and ViolasThese two are a container staple and it doesnt
seem like spring without them. As they tend to be
low growers, they look great in a low and wide
planter or used as filler when mixed with larger,
taller plants.
PrimroseThis semi-evergreen perennial comes in a wide
variety of colors. Also short, it should be placed
in the front of a container.
Lenten RoseAn early-blooming perennial, this flower, which
isnt a rose, works well in a shady container. Once
the blooms have finished and warmer weather is
upon us, you can relocate it to your landscape for
blooms in years to come.
