ROYALS WIN ANOTHER THRILLER--For a second-straight night, the Royals used an 11th-inning home run to break a tie and claim a 2-0 series lead in this best-of-five American League Division Series...this time, Eric Hosmer played hero, blasting the first pitch he saw deep in the California night after Lorenzo Cain opened the 11th with an infield hit...Kansas City became the first team in Major League history to hit extra-inning home runs in consecutive postseason games...Alex Gordon then walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on Salvador Perez’s RBI single to give KC an insurance run...Greg Holland recorded his second save in as many nights, working around a two-out throwing error...rookie Brandon Finnegan earned the win, the first of his career, pitching the bottom of the 10th...the Royals took the early lead when Hosmer singled and reached second on an error in right field, scoring on Gordon’s RBI single...the Angels evened the score in the sixth when two men reached with two outs against Yordano Ventura and Albert Pujols singled to right...Ventura pitched the first 7.0 frames, allowing just one run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts, becoming the first Royals rookie to start a postseason game since Bret Saberhagen got the assignment in Game 2 of the 1984 ALCS...KC’s bullpen combination of Wade Davis, Jason Frasor, Finnegan and Holland combined to blank the Angels on one hit over the final four innings... KC’s 2-0 lead in the series marks the first time the club has been ahead 2-0 in a postseason series since the 1980 ALCS when the Royals swept the Yankees in three games...the victory was also KC’s sixth-straight in postseason play, dating back to Game 6 of the 1985 World Series, the longest streak in franchise history. MEDIA SCHEDULE--Today’s off-day workout by the Royals is optional as the team arrived home from the West Coast early this morning...Manager Ned Yost will meet with the media in the Level One Interview Room at 4 p.m., with Game 3 starting pitcher James Shields available at 4:15 p.m....one other selected Royals player will also be at the podium at 4:30 p.m....the Angels are not scheduled to arrive until later this afternoon, with Manager Mike Scioscia, Game 3 starting pitcher C.J. Wilson and a selected Angels player available in the interview room between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. ROOKIES PLAYING BIG ROLES--Three Kansas City rookies have played large roles already in this series, as right-handed pitcher Yordano Ventura, left-handed pitcher Brandon Finnegan and outfielder Terrance Gore have made their presence felt...Ventura started last night’s game and tossed 7.0 quality innings, becoming just the third Royals rookie to start a postseason game, joining Bret Saberhagen (1984 vs. Detroit) and Mike Jones (1981 vs. Oakland)...Finnegan has made a pair of scoreless appearances in the series, earning the victory last night...he became the youngest Royals pitcher (21 years, 172 days) to win a postseason game for KC, passing Saberhagen, who won Game 3 of the 1985 World Series at 21 years, 194 days...he was also just the fifth pitcher to record his first Major League win in the postseason and first since David Price in 2008...Gore has not had an at bat in the series, but stolen a pair of bases as a pinch runner against the Angels and also had one vs. Oakland last Tuesday. BONUS BASEBALL ABOUND--Kansas City became the first team in Major League history to play three-straight extra-innings games to open a postseason, winning all three of them...in fact, they are the first club to play in three consecutive extra-inning games at any time during the postseason since the 1980 National League Championship Series, when Philadelphia and Houston played four-straight contests (Games 2-5) that couldn’t be decided in regulation...last night was the sixth extra- inning postseason game in franchise history, with KC now 4-2 all-time...only five other clubs (1986 New York Mets, 1991 Minnesota Twins, 1996 New York Yankees, 2003 Florida Marlins, 2004 Boston Red Sox) have won three extra-inning games in a single postseason and all of them have gone on to win the World Series. ALDS 25-MAN ROSTER--The Royals made a couple of alterations to the roster for the American League Division Series...KC will have an 11-pitcher staff with Tim Collins and Jason Vargas added from the inactive list for the Wild Card game, while deactivating infielder Jayson Nix and outfielder Raul Ibanez...the ALDS active roster consists of: PITCHERS (11): Wade Davis, Tim Collins (L), Danny Duffy (L), Brandon Finnegan (L), Jason Frasor, Jeremy Guthrie, Kelvin Herrera, Greg Holland, James Shields, Jason Vargas (L), Yordano Ventura. Game 4 Starter - TBA

MEN OF STEAL--The Royals’ running game his picked up where it left off in the regular season as the club has recorded 11 stolen bases in the first three games of this year’s playoffs, while allowing none to it’s opposition...during the regular season, Kansas City led the Major Leagues with 153 steals, ahead of the 138 thefts by the Los Angeles Dodgers...KC’s 81.0 percent success rate (153-for-189) ranked third in the Majors, just behind Washington (81.5) and the Yankees (81.2).

THE LAND OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer’s two-run homer in the 11th inning last night was the exclamation point on an outstanding first week of postseason play, as the Royals first baseman is 6-for-11 (.545) with a triple, a homer, 3 RBI, 4 runs scored and 4 walks in 3 games...last night, he joined George Brett as the only two Royals to reach base safely 4+ times in multiple postseason games in their careers...Eric also had 3 hits and 2 walks in the 9-8 Wild Card win over the A’s here on Tuesday night...Hoz also scored the Royals’ first run of the game last night on Alex Gordon’s RBI single in the second inning.

ROYALS HELPING FUEL MOST-WATCHED POSTSEASON--Friday was an exciting day of postseason drama across Major League Baseball as the first three games of the day were all decided by one run, while the Royals prevailed in 11 innings with a 4-1 triumph... The excitement on the field has led this postseason to bethe most-watched since 2010, with 3.8 million average viewers through day two of the Division Series, an increase of +15% over last year through the same point, according to Nielsen.

HOLLY HAS ANOTHER SOLID YEAR--Greg Holland finished the regular season with 46 saves, good for second in the A.L. in saves and is the first Royal to record back-to-back 40-save seasons for Kansas City since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...while postseason stats are not included in the regular season total, Holly has now made good on 47 of his 49 save tries this year, including 40 of the last 41 and 21 in a row after last night’s rescue...over a longer haul in regular season play, Holland has converted 86 of his last 89 attempts (96.6%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 81) and Holland has allowed just 14 earned runs in 113.1 innings for a 1.11 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 113-for-123, the best save pct. at 91.9 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities.

GORE A BLUR ON THE BASES--Terrance Gore, a 23-year old outfielder from Macon, GA, has had a meteoric rise this season, culminating with a little over a month in the Majors thanks to the wheels he possesses...KC’s 20th round selection in 2011, Gore’s year began in Wilmington, KC’s Class A club in the Carolina League, where he pilfered 36 bags in 40 tries...to prepare him for a potential September big league audition, Gore was moved to Omaha (AAA), where he swiped 11 bases in 14 tries...he was then added as part of the September roster expansion and went 5-for-5 as a big league base thief...Gore has proven to be such a threat on the bases that he has been on each postseason roster to this point and swiped a base in each game.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING--This 2014 version of the Kansas City Royals entered Tuesday night’s Wild Card Game with only five players who had previous postseason experience with Wade Davis, Omar Infante, Jayson Nix, James Shields and Raul Ibanez...with Ibanez and Nix inactive for this series, KC is down to three who have extended experience in October baseball.

NORI AND JEREMY TAKE SEPTEMBER HONORS--Nori Aoki and Jeremy Guthrie were voted the Royals’ Player and Pitcher of the Month for the final regular season month of the year...Aoki finished third among American League batters with a .379 average and fourth in on-base percentage at .432...he set a club record with 11 hits in a 3-game series from September 15-17 vs. the White Sox and added 2 walks against Chicago, becoming the first Major League player since 2009 to reach base 13 times in a series...this is Aoki’s first Player of the Month honor since joining the Royals this season...Guthrie was 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA over 5 starts...he tossed 7.0 shutout innings on September 26 at Chicago, earning the win as the Royals clinched a playoff spot and recorded a 0.89 home ERA, fourth-best in the A.L., and finished the season on a 3-game winning streak...this is Guthrie’s third career Royals Pitcher of the Month award.

A LOOK BACK AT ‘14--Kansas City snapped its postseason dry spell with an 89-73 season, capped last Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 win over the White Sox in Chicago to finish one game behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central...the rollercoaster ride that was the 2014 season saw the Royals trail by as many as 6 1/2 games after play on June 1, only to reel off a 13-2 stretch to take a 1 1/2-game advantage in the Central on June 18...KC then fell into a 9-18 skid from June 19-July 21 to fall to eight games behind the Tigers, but a win in Chicago on July 22 jumpstarted a season-ending stretch in which the Royals were 41-23 and popped champagne corks for the first time in 29 years last Friday night with a win over the White Sox in U.S. Cellular Field...the 41 victories since July 22 were the second most in the Majors, trailing only the Orioles and Nationals, who recorded 42 each...the 89-victory season marked the most by the Kansas City franchise since winning 92 times in 1989...KC has coupled its last two seasons for a 175-149 mark for a .540 winning pct.

89-WIN YEAR--The Royals recorded 89 victories, the most for the franchise since going 92-70 in 1989...with 86 wins last year and 89 this season, Kansas City has eclipsed the 86-win mark in consecutive years for the first time since 1977 (102) and 1978 (92)...the last two full seasons KC had a winning mark was 1988-89, when the Royals went 84-77 and 92-70, respectively.

RUNNIN’ ROYALS--As evidenced by Tuesday’s MLB postseason record tying performance with seven thefts in the win over Oakland, the stolen base is a valuable asset in the Kansas City offensive arsenal...for the second straight year, the Royals led the Majors in stolen bases with 153 both this year and last season...Jarrod Dyson, despite being a part-time player, has swiped 30, 34 and now 36 in his last three seasons, totaling 100 bags in that span which is seventh among all big league thieves, most of whom play every day...KC was the only big league club with three players with at least 25 thefts, as Dyson is joined by Alcides Escobar (31) and Lorenzo Cain (28), marking the first time for the franchise since U.L. Washington, Willie Wilson and John Wathan each swiped at least 25 bags in 1983.

KEEPING IT IN THE YARD--The bullpen duo of Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera combined for 140.0 homerless innings during the 2014 campaign...Davis has tossed 72.0 frames and allowed only five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple), while Herrera has fired 68.0 innings and given up 12 extra-base knocks (all doubles)...Davis, Herrera and the Dodgers’ Brandon League were the only three pitchers in the Majors who have worked at least 60.0 innings with no home runs surrendered.

DAVIS SETS STRIKEOUT MARK--The breakout bullpen year of Wade Davis ended with 109 strikeouts, shattering the team record for a reliever held by fellow bullpen-mate Greg Holland, set last year, and Jim York, a reliever for KC in 1971...Davis attained his 109 K’s in 72.0 innings for a 13.6 strikeout to 9-inning ratio, the third best mark in the A.L. (minimum 60.0 innings).

ESKY LOVING LEADOFF--Alcides Escobar was moved to the top of the batting order on September 13 and responded by hitting .375 (24-for-64) from the leadoff position in the last 15 games of the regular season, with four doubles, a home run and eight runs scored...he also hit safely in his last nine contests at a .415 clip (17-for-41)...he finished with a career best 34 doubles, the second most by a Kansas City shortstop in team history, trailing only Kurt Stillwell’s 35 in 1990.

OFFENSE DOUBLES DOWN--Kansas City had nine players with at least 20 doubles this season, tying a club record...the group of Eric Hosmer (35), Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon (34 each), Billy Butler (32), Lorenzo Cain (29), Salvador Perez (28), Nori Aoki (22), Omar Infante (21) and Mike Moustakas (20) are the fourth nine-some to hit the 20-double mark joining the 1977, ‘78 and 2008 squads.

REPLAYING 2014--Manager Ned Yost finished the first year of instant replay in the regular season making good on 22 of his 35 requests for a 63% success rate...he requested only three reviews in the last 33 games of the season...on the flip side, KC’s opponents went 18-for-43 (42%) in replay challenges...there were 1,275 reviews during this initial campaign of replay, 310 were confirmed, 352 stood and 603 were overturned...the overall overturned figure was 47.3%, while Kansas City finished well above that at 63%...there were 1,051 manager challenges and 224 Crew Chief Reviews.

NED LONGEST TENURED KC SKIPPER--Ned Yost has been at the helm for 775 regular season games as the Kansas City manager, surpassing Royals’ Hall of Famer skipper Dick Howser (770) for the most games managed in franchise history, and becoming the first manager since Howser to lead the Royals to the postseason...Yost has a 373-402 ledger as KC’s manager, including a 175-149 (.540) mark in the last two seasons...coupled with 457 wins in Milwaukee, Yost is tied for 73rd on the all-time managerial win list with 830 over his 11-year career, matching Fred Hutchinson’s total in a 12-year career as a skipper of the Tigers, Cardinals and Reds.
