from Principal Hamada

We are pleased to announce Kapaa High School’s partnership with Kauai Community Federal Credit Union in launching the Warrior Credit Union (WCU) student branch beginning on February 10, 2016. Personal finance education is a key element in establishing a sound and secure economy within our community and beyond. It is our goal to provide real life financial experiences and information to youth in order to nurture financially productive adults. By participating in this educational program, your student will be introduced to beginning concepts regarding personal savings, identifying needs vs. wants, using a debit card, monitoring monthly and online statements, and financial goal setting. Age appropriate saving and checking programs will be offered through the Warrior Credit Union in order to encourage students to develop

good financial habits.

Not only will this program educate participating student members, but it also serves as a live learning experience for students at Kapaa High School. The Warrior Credit Union will be operating the student run branch every Wednesday from 9:25-11:35am in Room I-101 next to the office. Students may make real money deposits, check deposits, and withdrawals up to $20 at the WCU school branch. For more advanced transactions, students will experience typical member services at

KCFCU branches and ATMs.

The Outdoor Classroom is a reminder that innovation is alive and well in public education. Students love the

Outdoor Classroom. When a teacher asks who wants to go outside every hand is

raised. Absenteeism goes down on Outdoor Classroom days. By preserving a student’s innate sense of curiosity and wonder we will foster active and engaged lifelong learners.

Yes, learning can be FUN! This is evident in Ms. O’Rourke’s class.

Also, proximity to the surrounding neighborhood often leads to service learning projects that emphasize social involvement and responsibility. We are ever grateful to the many organizations that continue to provide our students with

well-rounded service learning opportunities.

represents Kapa’a High in Science Fair

Please make time to read The Garden Island Newspaper write up on Ritikaa Kumar as the Science Fair competition has only begun. She has been working tirelessly on this incredible and relevant science fair project, which is getting a lot of recognition both in the scientific community and in the general public. If you see her, make sure to congratulate her. We still have District Science Fair to get through in February, and we are still working hard to make her ready to qualify for states... but no matter the outcome, she has certainly made a name for herself. http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/education/honey-of-a-science-project/article_ac832106-aa0d-58c6-8bbc-22d433f98698.html

Aloha and thank you to all who have supported her through this. Nicole McKamey

Virtual Enterprise on its Ninth Year The Shark Tank presentation evolved from the Virtual Enterprise Business Plan presentations that began in 2008. This year was our ninth presentation. Last year Ms. Farina tried something new - instead of having the students come up with different business ideas and voting on ONE that they would develop, she let them develop the ones they wanted to. Instead of having each business present their business plans individually, they competed "Shark Tank” style. Last year we had four businesses competing and this year there were five. Both years had five sharks that voted on which business was presented the best, was most likely to be successful, and which they would most likely invest money in. Both years had a monetary prize for the winning team. The winning team this year was Gardens of Feedin' - a company that will install and maintain vertical food and/or ornamental gardens for private households as well as businesses.
