At the age of thirteen years, in Ladybrand High School in the Eastern Free State, Gerhard discovered photography while playing with his mother's Kodak instama�c camera.

The camera stayed with him throughput his high school career, and two years a�er high school, while spending eighteen months in Namibia during the Southern African Border War.

In 1980 he enrolled for a B.Ed degree at the University of the Free State, with Geography as one of his subjects. In January 1984 he started as a Geography teacher and spend the next twelve years of his �me in a classroom.

He bought his first “real” camera in February 1984 and a lifelong passion began. First as amateur, but in 1996 as a full-�me photographer. Since 1996 he have covered rugby, cricket, swimming and soccer. In 2011 he began specialising in wildlife photography.

Since January 2012 he spent most of his �me in the Kalahari region. Today he is proud to call himself a full-�me wildlife photographer.
