It is a whole school responsibility to evaluate student performance and to inform future teaching and learning to programs. Attitudes to School We have received the results of the Attitudes to School Survey that our Year 4, 5 and 6 students completed in May this year. The objective of the annual Attitudes to School Survey is to collect data about the opinions of students from Years 4 to 12 to assist schools with planning, developing curriculum and improving student outcomes. The survey assists schools to gain an understanding of studentsperceptions and their experience of school. It provides schools with valuable data on studentsviews of their wellbeing, teaching, learning and school in general. The highest percentage score 94% indicates that our students believe that my teacher expects me to do my bestand my teacher believes that I can do well at school’. These two comments with positive responses reflect the value and importance we place on assisting students to have high expectations for success. We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction. We are conducting a Karoo based student-led discussion to find out what your child thinks of our school. We will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience. An email has been sent reminding families who have not already done so, to complete the confidential online survey by Sunday 27th August. SENIOR HOOP TIME SELECTION POLICY

We have had a fantastic response from 89 of our Year 5 & 6 students in their expression of interest to be a part of the Senior Hoop Time Competition. Unfortunately, we are only able to take 40 students to this event, which has made selection for this team difficult. As this is their final year at Karoo we have given preference to the Year 6s to participate in this event and all of the Year 6s that expressed interest in playing have made a team. We have had a strong interest from the Year 6s to participate therefore there have only been a few Year 5s invited to join a team. The Year 5s that have been selected by using the following policy:

Grade of basketball played – dependant on the team that a player is required for e.g. If the All Star Girls required more players, then students playing B Grade basketball or higher were selected for this team.

Gender – as Hoop Time regulations state, each team needs to provide a certain amount of girls and boys e.g. Every Future Star and Rookie team needs to have 2 girls on a court at one time therefore we have chosen some of the teams on gender needs.

What if there are more participants than places in a team? If there are more participants filling these criteria than places in the team we have randomly selected players from that list to join. Obviously, our preference would be for mass participation however there are many factors taken into account when making the decision to limit participation to 40 students. We understand and empathise with the Year 5 students who don’t get the chance to participate this year.

Getting the most out of Live Mathletics

For several years now, Karoo has subscribed to an online numeracy resource called Mathletics. This system of lessons and basic number fact practise sessions are available to all Karoo students both at school and at home. Live Mathletics is one of the many great ways to get some practise in at home.

What age is Live Mathletics appropriate for? All ages. The ten individual gaming levels include content from simple addition questions to complex algebra and statistics for Secondary/High School students. Students are matched together based on their personal speed and accuracy scores (regardless of age), so fair and competitive games are assured at all times.

Which level should I choose in Live Mathletics? Live Mathletics has ten levels of games. We recommend you choose a level that will challenge you. Once you reach Hu-man Calculator ranking at one level, try challenging yourself at the next level up. Your individual Bonus Level (shown with a gold star) will guide you where will be a good level to challenge yourself.

How are students matched in Live Mathletics? Students are matched on their ability and skill level, not age or location, to ensure everyone gets a fair game, every time. Live Mathletics uses lots of data from each student (relating to their average score, speed and accuracy etc) to match stu-dents together. In random-match games (such as World Challenge) students will only be matched with another online stu-dent of the same ability, regardless of their age or location. Students are also only matched with another of equal skill rank-ing – from Raging Rookie through to Human Calculator.

How is my ability ranking decided on Live Mathletics? Your ability ranking – from Raging Rookie to Human Calculator – depends on your top score and accuracy level. The Live Mathletics computer uses your average scores from your last three games to decide your ranking. Improve your scores and watch your ranking increase, but be careful… your ranking can also go down!

Keep up the great work using Mathletics Karoo!

Miss Mollica on behalf of the Mathematics Team

Canteen News

ORDER YOUR LUNCHES ONLINE

Our school has made an important change by registering for the online ordering system QuickCliq, which provides a safe way for ordering meals from our canteen online at your convenience.

You can now order your children’s lunch orders online, using this new online canteen ordering system. Full instructions (including a link to the QuickCliq website) is available on the Karoo Primary School website under the Canteen tab.

QuickCliq allows you to set up an account from which your lunch order money is direct debited. No need to worry about having the correct money for your child’s lunch, and orders can be placed at any time that is convenient to you. No lunch orders can be accepted online after 9am for that same day’s lunch.

You are still welcome to order your child’s lunch manually using a paper bag and paying with cash—ordering lunches using the lunch tubs will continue as normal.

If you have any trouble registering or setting up your account, please contact Quick Cliq - [email protected] or call 1300 116 637.

How to get started: • Visit www.quickcliq.com.au • Log on or, if you are not already registered, ‘sign up’ by completing the registration form and follow the prompts • Ensure you have added a student • Select the ‘Meal Order’ tab to order from your canteen • Order at your convenience

More information on how to place orders can be found on the QuickCliq website or contact QuickCliq directly by email - [email protected].

If you have any questions regarding the Menu Items, please feel free to come and see me at the canteen.

Year 5/6 Science

From the Year 6 Science Captains, Samuel V and Olivia W.

In the first five weeks of this term the Year 5s and 6s have been very busy in Science. This term the Year 5s have been learning about ‘Earth’s Place In Space’ and have already learnt lots. They have made models of how the Earth, Moon and Sun move around each other, learnt about people who once thought the Earth was flat and had some fun using shadows to make Sun dials.

The Year 6s have also learnt lots about their new topic ‘Change Detectives’ (chemical science). They learnt about chemical and physical changes by doing cool experiments such as Candle in a Jar, Ice cubes melting and mixing bi-carb soda, citric acid, tartaric acid and water together.
