[email protected] READING GROUP “Would you rather love the more, and suffer the more, or love less, and suffer less?” Paul, the protagonist in Julian Barnes’s latest novel The Only Story, asks himself this philosophical question. As in Barnes’s previous novels the story starts in the 1950s, continues with university life in the 60s. But in Paul’s case his life takes a dramatic turn when he falls in love with a middle-aged woman he stays with for many years. Gradually we see the changes in their relationship until neither hate nor love is left. It is an account of how romantic love becomes trapped and loses all meaning. This exceptional novel with its understated melancholy will be discussed by our group in June.

Recently I came across a classic novel worth (re)reading: Travels with my Aunt by Graham Greene. This entertaining book also takes you back to a 1950s tongue-in-cheek atmosphere, including some political incorrectness . Henry Pulling , a retired bank manager, meets his elderly aunt for the first time in 50 years at his mother’s funeral. Soon after she persuades him to join her on her travels and abandon his quiet uneventful life. But who is this aunt really and what company does she keep? A very fitting read for a summer’s afternoon, I’d say. TRIP TO THE PEAK DISTRICT Our trip to the Peak District with visits to several Gardens (Harlow Carr among others) and Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and the James Herriott Museum from 23/8 to 28/8 with OAD reizen is going ahead with eight British Society Members and four guests. For the full programme please consult the OAD website. There may still be a few places left. It should be pointed out that this trip is also open to the general public.
