August 15th, 2013. Dear friends, It seems like every time I turn on the TV, I see programs about childhood obesity and its long term impact on the health of our children. Putting the genetics argument, (‘everyone in our family is big’) to one side, we know that the two reasons our kids get fat are; poor diet and lack of exercise. As parents we can promote family fitness by giving our kids a break from television and computer games – and by providing them with active alternatives. Increasing family fitness through physical activity improves cardiovascular fitness, reduces weight, builds healthy bones and boosts self-esteem. Enjoying family activities makes fitness fun for everyone and needn’t be expensive. Spend weekends and holidays being active – go walking, swimming, kite flying, surfing or
cycling. Most residential areas have parks, nature walks and recreational facilities just waiting to be explored.
Make it a family rule to use stairs rather than lifts and escalators wherever you are. Buy pedometers for everyone and give treats for the most steps taken in a week. Take a brisk, no excuses, after-dinner walk every night. Make gardening, lawn mowing and washing the car family activities. Play a sport together – choose one everyone can enjoy, at a time that doesn’t conflict
with other commitments. Choices could include ten pin bowling, football, volleyball, golf and running.
Put on the music, roll back the rugs and enjoy a family dance session. Enjoy a regular family bike ride. Take the dog for a long walk together. Walk to local shops rather than taking the car. When you do take the car, park as far away as possible to make everyone have a walk. Find active games you can play inside. Put up a hoop in the back yard and play ball games. At Rosamond, we’ve made a commitment to using recess and lunch breaks to provide our students with opportunities to develop recreation and leisure options, by providing a range of activities, games and programs. Some teachers and support staff offer quiet games in the library, while others transport interested students to a local reserve for a kick of the footy. The newly formed Rosamond Choir rehearses in the gym and anyone wanting to Jump Rope for Heart can go skipping in the Town Square. It’s still very early days, but all indicators are that this is going to be a great success! Not only are more students engaged in a worthwhile activity during break times, but the whole ‘tone’ of the playground has noticeably lifted. It’s very evident!
Have a lovely weekend! Go Seagulls! Kate.

We have settled into the new school environment, enjoying our fantastic surroundings.
There are so many opportunities on offer this term, opportunities that would not have been possible at
the old campus. The playtimes are filled with fantastic programs. Students have enjoyed taking turns to visit the
library at recess and lunch times. Some students have also joined the school choir, practicing each
Tuesday lunch time with Jenni. It is great to be given so many fantastic and enjoyable
experiences.

S8 News Our learning intentions this week in Numeracy have been centred around; addition, number stories and adding money. In Literacy we have focused on instructional texts. S8 have learnt how to look up recipes on the internet and in supermarket ‘free magazines’. We have written instructions and drawn steps to make some of our favourite recipes.
Below are some pictures of students from S8 engaged in learning in our new classroom space.

SCIENCE ELECTIVE
Everyone is enjoying participating in the senior school electives. In Science we are learning about three different states of matter i.e., solids, liquids and gases. Matter is everywhere we see and touch, and in everything we taste and smell. Each week we conduct experiments and Phillip, Thuan and Van have enjoyed making quicksand. Laura, Lachlan, Mo and Khaled worked well together during the dissolving jelly experiment. This week we will be experimenting with fizzing and foaming liquid and then complete a report detailing our observations.
NETBALL
The Netball season has begun with
great enthusiasm. It is a terrific
learning experience for the girls and many stars have
emerged. We have won a few games and we are so proud of the way our
girls support each other.

This term we started a project about Ned Kelly. Esther is planning an excursion to the Old Melbourne Gaol and we are all very excited.
We presented our narratives to Rose’s Class. We have been doing it for a couple of weeks. We told them stories that we have written ourselves.
We started electives in other classes. There was a choice of doing science with Isobel, dancing/art with Dee, photography with Esther or cyber-safety with Rose. Cyber-safety was just for the girls’ class.
Khaled did a science experiment about how to make jelly and Yaser is learning art and dancing.
Hassan and Tristan started going to TAFE. They go every Friday to Kangan in Broadmeadows. They are doing Horticulture. They learn about methods of planting.
We started to talk about things we would like to have at new school. We would like footy goals, soccer goals and lots of sports equipment.
S12 NEWS!

In S10 we have started writing narrative stories!
After watching S12 present their narrative stories we have agreed that all of our stories need to have…
• characters (people or animals to be in the story),
• a setting (a place for things to happen),
• a time (past, present or future),
• a problem (something goes wrong) and
• a solution (they fix the problem).
My story is about Sonic the Hedgehog watching a movie
with me.
I write about Di going to the old school by accident.
My story is about Garfield. All the food gets eaten in my story.
Rose visits the zoo and sees the monkeys in my story.
In my story Mario and Luigi get a flat tyre.

WELCOME TO EXITS 9’s NEWS
The students from Exits 9 would like to share what a week looks like for them. Just in case parents of students from Exits 9 have not seen a copy of this term’s timetable, I’m sending one home with this week’s newsletter.
The students are involved in a broad range of opportunities beyond their classroom timetable. Two students at a time take part in G.I.F.T. (goal intensive focused teaching) which sees two students participate in five week blocks. This is a very special time for each student to access individual learning time with their teacher, focussed specifically on working towards goal achievement. Donna and Tess have just finished their five weeks and now it is Faduma and Amina’s turn. All students in Exits 9 have been involved in G.I.F.T. this year.
Specialist subjects rotate every five weeks too. The students have just finished an intensive cooking and Living Skills program (which is continued in the classroom). They are now involved in intensive Health and Physical Education programs.
Exits 9 students are also involved in Recreation and Leisure programs which run at Lunch and Recess times. These include Library, Skipping, Piano and Choir activities. More programs will be implemented as we all get used to working in the fabulous new spaces in our school.
Amina and Faduma took part in Eid celebrations last week. Amina wrote about her celebration.
Last Thursday, we had Eid Mubarak with my family and cousins. We went to the Mosque. After, we went to my Uncle’s house to see all my cousins. We had food and drink. We got money from my cousin.

THOUGHTS ON THE NEW LIVING SKILLS ROOM
It has more light, it’s a lot bigger, there is more room and the pantry is bigger. We need blinds. Shae E. The new cooking room would have to be BETTER than the old one at the other school. Some of the things I like about the new cooking room are, it’s bigger, everything is spaced out, there’s more lighting. What I don’t like about the room is where the interactive white board is. The sun light hits the board and makes it a bit hard to see the board and there are no blinds. The laundry also has its own room in the cooking room, I also like that the room is more colourful than the other one. Liam T.
I like the new big Living Skills room. It has more space. I like the bright new colours. Timothy G. It has more light, it’s a lot bigger. The new Living Skills room is way bigger than the old Living Skills room at the old school. The new laundry is away from the kitchen and its way bigger than the old the one. Jye D.
The Living Skills room in the new school is amazing because it is much longer. Way more space to move around in. The bench is longer and there’s a fair bit of space to work on. There is air conditioning and heating in the new Living Skills room which we didn’t have in the old school. The laundry in the new school has great space to go into to do laundry. The windows are good because you see through them to see the lawn and trees. We can see out into the distance. Gheorghe B. There’s a lot of room to do cooking. The laundry is a separate room and has lots of room. Dean Z. The Living Skills room has more space to work in than the old school. Kenny L.
I love the light. We don’t need the fluorescent lights on. The separate laundry is great. Having the fridges and freezer together is good.
We can see all the students at the same time. There is plenty of bench space for students to prepare their ingredients.
Mr Wayne Green
We are all looking forward to all the new and exciting programs that will be operating in the Living Skills room!!

news Hello and welcome to the regular ‘eSmart’ newsletter page.
‘eSmart’ has been developed by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation to assist schools to deal with all issues around cyber-‐safety and the smart use of today’s technology, including social media.
Rosamond has taken eSmart on board to ensure our students are ‘cyber smart’ and ‘cyber safe’.
The following quote has been taken directly from the eSmart charter. It explains the risks and why we need, both as educators and parents, to be proactive. “One of the most common forms of aggression
experienced by children comes in the form of schoolyard bullying. In recent years we have witnessed peer-to-peer bullying shift to cyberspace - with mobile phones and the Internet
becoming major tools in vicious 24/7 bullying campaigns. Addressing bullying is a fundamental step to improving young people's safety in cyberspace.”
If you have a cyber-‐safety concern about your child and you wish to report it to school, you can talk to your child’s teacher or there is a box in the foyer for you to use-‐ there are forms next to the box and envelopes
to place your report into. All reports will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
Students also have a Rosamond ‘Facebook’ page to use as a place where they can report any incidents of cyber bullying or inappropriate use of technology, including social media. So guys, please add us on
Facebook, our name is ‘Rosamond eSmart’-‐ “Got any problems, come to us, feel free to talk through inbox”.
We have a very active committee that meets weekly. This consists of a parent, three students, a representative from the Leadership Team and a teacher. Marie Parany represents the parents, Shae, Liam and Noah are the student reps., Linda Blaschka is the rep. for the Leadership team and Jenni Morlang is the teacher rep. The committee has been working hard to create a cyber safe community at Rosamond. We
have implemented a range of strategies to support and educate our school community to be aware of and resolve potential issues. The student body of the committee provides a student voice and assists in planning and writing the newsletter as well as keeping everyone up to date with the latest technologies and risks of those technologies. Parents are providing invaluable feedback and commitment to making a difference.
Please let us know if you have any questions or information to help keep our children safe.
Thanks, Marie, Jenny, Linda, Elisa, Shae, Liam, Noah.
