10thank you for joining us

In 1972, my mother Adela somehow scraped together enough money to bring me, a high school freshman newly enthralled with theatre, to see my first professional play at Dallas Theater Center. She was a single mom, working two jobs to raise my little sister and I, the last of ten kids left at home. She probably never imagined that many years later this son of hers would be back at that same theatre

directing a play ironically set in that same time period, the 1970s, or much less that her future granddaughter would be performing in that same production.

“Music is memory”, Mino says in American Mariachi, José Cruz González’s beautiful and deeply moving play that we are so proud to share with you tonight. Given the musical heart of this play, the truth of Mino’s statement is not only evident in the marvelous coincidences I mention above, but in the veins of humanity that flow throughout José’s play. It is especially resonant for me in the “mental illness” Amalia struggles with, a dementia not unlike the one that overtook my mother near the end of her life.

Amidst all the beautiful celebration of “amor, familia y tradición” (love, family and tradition) that is American Mariachi, there also lives for me a parallel celebration of the uniquely Latin American aesthetic known as Magical Realism. In that reality, Amalia’s illness is not something to be pitied or discounted, but rather an alternate reality and pathway to the next life so exquisitely embodied in the Mexican tradition of El Día de los Muertos, The Day of the Dead.

Filled with infectious music, humor, and love, American Mariachi just might also be asking us to consider how we dismiss people with dementia, like Amalia. Perhaps what we as a society discount as illness, may in fact be the music of memory flowing like a river that separates this reality from the next.

In 2009, with the generous support of

Diane and Hal Brierley, Artistic Director

Kevin Moriarty reinstated Dallas Theater

Center’s resident acting company.

His intent was to develop and nurture

professional actors within the North

Texas community and enable them to

make Dallas their artistic home. At

the same time, he sought to enhance

Dallas Theater Center’s artistic profile

and create ongoing collaborative

relationships. The eight-member Diane

and Hal Brierley Resident Acting

Company has since become a signature

component of Dallas Theater Center’s

presence in the Dallas Arts District.
