SOCIAL TENNIS REPORT BY GREG DICKSON Sally Pannifex has the eye of the tiger as she drives a double-handed backhand with force. Master of spin has gone missing NOT a great start to the year. The Katherine Bowls Club has ap- peared to have lost it’s highly accredited reporter. After a couple of years hiatus, Matty Toucher was to make a much anticipated return to print media but he seems to be missing in action. If anyone knows the whereabouts of this master of spin, please point him in the direction of his computer so we can once again marvel at his highly accurate, totally captivating weekly bowls reports. Red Rooster Jack Pot Pairs In the meantime, it is my pleasure to announce that the Tuesday Night Red Rooster Jackpot Pairs has commenced for 2014 (all be it weather permitting). The current jackpot stands at a massive $10 as Fiona and Julie took home the jackpot a couple of weeks ago. Last Tuesday saw the rain hold off until we had finished play and we were all inside for the calling of the cards or in other words enjoying the taste of our first beer. Master of Ceremonies for Tuesday night’s is Mal Trattles who was curiously missing in action (Could it be that he was searching to locate Matty Toucher?) On rink two was a truly captivating game of triples between Higgo, Fiona and Woodsy taking on Dave C, Hayley and Mick. This game had everything including madness and mayhem with some excel- lent bowling thrown in for good mes- sage. Woodsy’s Team held a narrow lead of one shot going into the final end of play. It was anyone’s game but alas Mick’s magic disappeared when he needed it most. Woodsy’s Team entered the club house as winners of the game and the Red Rooster Chickens as well. The game on rink 3 was a seesawing affair with Sandy as swinging lead for Lauren and Bron as well as Dave J and Snake. Sandy failed to fire. Lauren and Dave J were hit and miss so the teams relied on the skill of their skips Bron and Snake and what a great battle that was. Great bowling Bron and Snake under some trying conditions. Well done to Bron’s team who eventually took out this match. If you want to be part of the action on Tuesday Night’s, head of the Katherine Bowls Club and put your name down by 6pm and be ready to play by 6.30pm. Juniors Wow! What a journey our juniors are on. They have competed at the highest level at the Australian Championships in October 2013 and now they are putting in the hard yards for this year’s elite event to be held in Darwin. Great to see the juniors getting on with business at training including train- ing independently last Sunday afternoon. Australian Open Sunday February 16 will see a con- tingent from the Northern Territory ar- rive at Darebin International Sports Centre. This event is Bowls Australia’s ‘Ulti- mate Battleground’ and we wish Kather- ine bowlers Bron, Sandy, Snake and Mal all the very best on their assault at the Australian Open. If you happen to be in Melbourne, please feel free to call in and show your support. The Katherine bowlers will be easy enough to spot; they will be the ones freezing even with jumpers and beanies on. Come and try sports day COME and Try Sports Day 2014 will be held again this year on Saturday Feb- ruary 22 at the Katherine Town Council Sports Grounds Complex running from 9:00am -12:00 noon. The day represents an excellent opportunity for many of the local sporting clubs to boost awareness on the wide range of sports available within Katherine. There will be a range of interactive displays throughout the grounds (includ- ing the YMCA). New residents and those interested in getting more active are encouraged to see what sport suits them best. Many sporting groups will be offering sign up on the day.
