At the event, Chatham resident Robert H. Doherty, Bank of America New Jersey president, was presented with the Corporate Honoree Award for his involvement with the Boys & Girls Clubs in NJ. NEWEST BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

LEADS TO FREE MAMMOGRAM PROGRAM PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 1, 2011) – The Breast Cancer Association announced the start of

a free mammogram program based on new research suggesting that women begin

mammogram testing at age 30, as opposed to the previously accepted age of 40. Located

on Market Street in Philadelphia, the Breast Cancer Association Center will open its

doors to all women for free mammograms starting Oct. 3, 2011 in celebration of Breast

Cancer Awareness Month.

“Breast cancer may not be preventable, but now we know that it’s treatable,” says

Tanya Sinclair, executive director of the Breast Cancer Association. “On average, 40,000

women die from breast cancer every year. This new research shows that we can help

save those lives.”

Drs. John and Rita Smith of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital found that

mammograms are more helpful for younger women, starting at age 30. These findings

are at odds with the American Cancer Society’s recommendation of women getting

yearly mammograms starting at age 40.

Dr. Robert Samuels of the University of Pennsylvania found that breast cancer is

highly treatable if women detect the lumps early. If the cancer is discovered at an earlier

stage of the disease, the cancer itself is less invasive and there are more treatment options

available. “Mammograms are the most effective way of finding breast cancer as early as

possible,” said Samuels.

Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 2011 marks the 27th annual National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Since its commencement in 1984, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

organization has been dedicated to promoting awareness of breast cancer, educating the

public on the disease, and offering greater access to preliminary screening services for all

women. Throughout the month, individuals and corporations alike do what they can to

spread awareness of the disease.

This year, NFL will celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and spread

awareness about breast cancer by sporting pink during their games. On Sunday and

Monday nights, football stadiums will be filled with pink cleats, wristbands, towels,

gloves, flags, whistles, and even pink goal posts as players, coaches, and staff bring

attention to the cause. The NFL corporation has also pledged to promote awareness by

integrating pink into its website, graphics, and advertisements.

Estée Lauder Companies has also promised to bring awareness to breast cancer by

illuminating famous landmarks around the world in pink during the month of October.

Constantine’s Arch in Rome, Niagara Falls in Canada, the French Affiliate Building in

Paris, and the Empire State Building in New York City, among many others around the

globe, will be lit up to call international attention to breast cancer.

Although October has been dedicated as a month to spread knowledge of breast

cancer, the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month organization continues to provide

information to patients, survivors, caregivers, and the general public year-round through

their website at www.NBCAM.org.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY TO CUT FATTY FOODS IN DINING HALLS

NEW YORK (Feb. 14, 2011) – Columbia University has made the move to healthier

dining halls. Beginning in the fall of 2011, only low-fat meals and snacks will be offered

throughout the campus’s dining halls and convenience stores. Each food item sold will

contain no more than ten grams of total fat, two grams of saturated fat, and no trans fat.

Columbia University has previously offered healthy options, such as gluten-free,

organic, vegetarian, and vegan menus. Columbia Reaching Out With Nutrition

(C.R.O.W.N.), an affiliate to Columbia’s dining services team, has found that many

students are unaware of the healthy options that are currently available.

“Many students find it difficult to eat right in college,” said director of Dining

Operations Victoria Dunn. Amidst concerns that this change will lead to an increase in

the cost of food, Dunn explains, “We do not want our students living off of Ramen

Noodles and soda. We would like to do everything we can to help our students to stay

healthy at the lowest cost possible.”

Many public health advocates, including the Public Health Association of New

York City, are enthralled by Columbia’s decision to create healthier dining options, and

have suggested that other schools follow suit.

$7,500 donated to assist students with educational costs MORRISTOWN, NJ (July 8, 2010) – The North Central Jersey Association of REALTORS®

(NCJAR) recently contributed three $2,500 scholarships to the New Jersey Association of

REALTORS® Education Foundation. Recipients are selected based on academic achievements,

financial needs, interest in real estate endeavors, and contributions to family, school and

community. The three NCJAR-donated scholarships, and their recipients, are:

• Dean A Gallo Award - Carissa M. Bowen (Edison, NJ) • Michael A. Campbell Award - Brittany O’Keefe (Rutherford, NJ) • Edward A. Ward Award - Brenda R. Falk (Dayton, NJ)

“Helping fund a student’s educational future is extremely important to us,” says Lorraine Hunt-

Kopacz, NCJAR President. “We truly believe that young people who excel in academics, athletics,

and extra curricular activities deserve to be recognized and rewarded. We couldn’t be happier to

assist in the bright future they have ahead of them in both the classroom and in their careers.”

Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 were awarded by the foundation to 37 students, to use

toward furthering their educations. The scholarships, totaling $53,500, were presented to recipients

during a recent event at The Pines Manor in Edison, N.J.

Scholarships are available to high school seniors who will attend a four-year institution, students

enrolled in four-year institutions, and students pursuing graduate studies in real estate or related

PENNDOT PROPOSES DOUBLE-DECKER HIGHWAY TO EASE I-76 CONGESTION

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Sept. 19, 2011) – Pennsylvania Department of Transportation

proposed the construction of a double-decker highway on I-76 that is planned to ease

congestion and fuel emissions. The initiative would take five years and $300 million to

complete. Construction would take place in the evening and overnight hours, to limit the

impact on commuters.

“The long-term aim of this project is the benefit of Pennsylvania drivers,” said

Deputy Secretary for Highway Administration Scott Christie, P.E. “Creating new road

space will reduce the traffic that has frequented I-76 for years.”

PennDOT’s plan is modeled after of the George Washington Bridge, which added

a second level to accommodate traffic demands. A second level, to be built above parts

of I-76 crossing through the Greater Philadelphia area, would increase road capacity by

as much as 75 percent.

The State of Pennsylvania will conduct a vote to approve the construction plan on

PHILADELPHIA FIREBIRDS READY TO

RECLAIM WOMEN’S FOOTBALL DIVISION TITLE FOLCROFT, Pa. (Sept. 19, 2011) – The Philadelphia Firebirds women’s tackle football

team is hosting three tryouts on Drexel University’s Buckley Turf as they prepare for the

spring season. Tryouts will take place Sept. 25, Oct. 16, and Nov. 20, 2011, from 9:00

a.m. to noon. A one-time tryout fee of $40 can be paid on their website at

www.philadelphiafirebirds.com or at the event.

“The passion these women have for the game is extraordinary,” said General

Manager Farah Dailey. “We look forward to continuing our success dominating the

league this season, with both new and returning players.”

Football experience is not required to try out. “Playing the game has brought out

true talent that many of these women never knew they had,” said Lorenzo O’Branty, head

coach of the Firebirds. “Amanda Congialdi, one of our newest players, was a softball

player her whole life. It wasn’t until she tried out for the team that she realized her

amazing throwing arm can be used for football."

The Firebirds will play an eight-game regular season, including four games on

their home turf at Benjamin Johnston Memorial Stadium. Competitors include the New

Philadelphia Firebirds: A Touchdown for the Community

Since their launch in 2003, the Philadelphia Firebirds have aimed to be more than

just a successful women’s tackle football team. They strive to empower women and

young girls to follow their dreams and achieve their personal best. Through internship

programs and community outreach, the Firebirds hope to create opportunities for all

women.

In a recent visit to the Rizzo PAL Positive Images Program, the Firebirds met

with young girls ages 11-17 to talk about women’s sports. The team, comprised of social

workers, teachers, police officers, and college students, spoke out against the stereotype

of girls not playing sports and stressed the opportunities available to women.

Because of their dedication to service, the Firebirds were recently chosen as guest

speakers for Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc., which honored a group of more than 400

cheerleaders and football players who demonstrate excellence both on and off the playing

field. The Firebirds spoke about the history of their team and league, as well as the

importance of balancing success in sports with success in schoolwork.

The mission of the Philadelphia Firebirds is to help women to reach their fullest

potential both on and off the field. They hope that their actions will continue to spread

encouragement and create new opportunities for many women and young girls.

exclusive q&a with amber riley! By Seventeen Magazine You probably all know Amber Riley as Mercedes Jones, the fashion-forward diva on Fox's hit show Glee. Her style, her drive, and her amazing singing talent are just a few of the many reasons why we love her, but we're going to give you another. Amber has teamed up with Secret Deodorant's Mean Stinks campaign, which sets out to right the wrongs of girl-to-girl meanness. The Mean Stinks campaign provides an online platform for girls to openly say nice things about other girls, in an effort to stand up to bullying.

Seventeen recently got the chance to talk to Amber to find out more about her involvement in the Mean Stinks campaign. 17: Have you ever been a victim of girl-to-girl meanness? Amber Riley: I haven't personally experienced bullying, but when I was in high school, I had a best friend who became a bully. I took a stand and took it upon myself to separate from her. I couldn't be associated with her because it wasn't

the type of person I wanted to be. I have always made a point to befriend those sitting alone or being bullied because I believe everyone deserves to have a friend. 17: What part do you play in the campaign? AR: I'm partnering with Secret's Mean Stinks Program to give girls the strength to break through the meanness and be nice. I want to encourage young women to stand up for each other and speak up when they see others in a tough situation. As part of the campaign, I'll be chatting on the Mean Stinks Facebook page, so continue to check for updates! 17: Do you think the Internet makes it easier for girl-to-girl meanness to continue? AR: Absolutely! According to a recent study that Secret conducted, 94% of young women agreed Facebook, YouTube, instant messaging, and texting make it easier for girls to bully or torment one another. This is a huge issue, especially with young women spending so much time online. That's why the Mean Stinks online community is cool - it gives girls a way to take a stand in a forum that they're already engaged in. 17: What effect do you think the Mean Stinks Facebook group will have on cyber bullying? AR: This campaign, above all, will help drive awareness and let young women know that they are not alone. Bullying is a tough subject and its nice to have a safe community to turn to that is encouraging and will offer support and advice. 17: What goals do you have for the Mean Stinks campaign?

AR: Personally, I want to get my experience out there and help young girls surround themselves with positive people. I want to advise young women to tell somebody, to let someone know if they see bullying happening. I can't stress enough how every little bit counts - and if you're nice to someone or encourage someone else to be nice, it can really help. of the Philly Casting Couch Holiday 2011-2012

tour! My name is Kathleen Tower, and I am the

public relations director for the Theatre Alliance

of Greater Philadelphia. On behalf of our organization, I would like to extend our thanks

to Neil Patrick Harris for his enthusiasm and willingness to partner with us on our latest

Casting Couch tour. Mr. Harris’s passion for the theatre has been contagious, and with

his help, we hope to spread our love for the theatre to all generations.

Through February 2012, Mr. Harris has agreed to serve as host for our Philly

Casting Couch Holiday Tour. Once a week at a Theatre Alliance production, Mr. Harris

and the Casting Couch will take the stage during intermission and after the show and

invite audience members onstage to tell everyone what they love about the theatre. We

believe that Mr. Harris’s presence will inspire younger generations to come out and find

their passion for the theatre as well.

In addition to serving as our host, Mr. Harris will also be the spokesperson for the

Casting Couch campaign. He will be featured in broadcast public service

announcements, posters, and billboards. These advertisements will serve to call attention

to our campaign and incite new audience members to attend a Theatre Alliance

production. With the help of Mr. Harris, we believe that this campaign will reach a wide

The 2011 Skin Sense Awards Gala !

This year’s Skin Sense Awards Gala has been

arguably one of the most successful to date.

The event, which annually honors exceptional

achievement in skin health, including public

education about sun protection and skin cancer

prevention, was held on October 11, 2011 at The

Plaza Hotel in New York City. The honorees this

year included The Skin Cancer Foundation’s

Photobiology Committee, Elliott Sigal, MD, PhD,

Chief Scientific Officer and President, Research

and Development Bristol-Myers Squibb and

Melisse Shaban, CEO of StriVectin.

All proceeds from the evening are put towards

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s public awareness

programs. With more than 400 people in

attendance, the event helped to contribute more

towards the cause than the past two years

combined.

Celebrity hosts for the evening, Katie Couric, Sam

Champion, weather anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, and Jerry Penacoli, EXTRA

correspondent, helped The Skin Cancer

Foundation attract such a large audience. The

hosts each spoke about personal experiences with

skin cancer and announced the honorees.

Also in attendance were Dianne Wiest, Julia

Stiles, Daphne Oz, and many other celebrities.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to

the Skin Sense Awards Gala to show their support

Many people think that because it’s no longer

hot outside, the sun can’t damage your skin. In

reality, the sun’s harmful UV rays can do just as

much damage to your skin in the dead of winter.

Here’s some helpful tips to make sure you’re

protected year-round.

Find a body lotion with SPF in it and use it

every morning. This will help to make sure

you’re covered (and moisturized) head to

If the sun is out, wear your sunglasses. Not

only are the rays damaging to your eyes,

but squinting in the sunlight can lead to

premature aging lines around your eyes.

No one wants that!

!Seek the shade, but be aware that

sunlight bouncing off a reflective

surface, such as the snow or ice, can

reach you even when the sun can’t.

!

A broad-brimmed hat goes a long way toward

preventing skin cancer in exposed areas like

the neck, ears, scalp, and face. Opt for a 3-4

inch brim that extends all around the hat.

!Protect your children and teach them sun

safety at an early age. Skin damage

accumulates over the course of a lifetime, so

it’s never to early to teach sun safety.

!Never seek a tan. There is no such thing as a

healthy tan. A tan is the skin’s response to

the sun’s damaging rays.

!Wear a chapstick or lip balm with SPF in it

and apply it often. Many forget that your lips

are skin and can be damaged by the sun’s

rays. Try Burt’s Bees Sun Protecting Lip

!Opt for your makeup brand’s SPF-infused

foundations and powders.

!Wear tightly woven fabrics in darker colors,

such as deep blues, blacks, and bright

get through lighter clothing.

!The biggest skin protection rule? Stay away

from the tanning beds! The UV radiation

emitted by indoor tanning lamps is even

more intense than natural light. Fake

tanning can lead to premature aging of the

skin and an increased risk of cancer.

time and expertise for the Skin Cancer

Foundation this year. Together, we have helped

to save lives.

The 2011 Skin Sense Awards Gala !

This year’s Skin Sense Awards Gala has been

arguably one of the most successful to date.

The event, which annually honors exceptional

achievement in skin health, including public

education about sun protection and skin cancer

prevention, was held on October 11, 2011 at The

Plaza Hotel in New York City. The honorees this

year included The Skin Cancer Foundation’s

Photobiology Committee, Elliott Sigal, MD, PhD,

Chief Scientific Officer and President, Research

and Development Bristol-Myers Squibb and

Melisse Shaban, CEO of StriVectin.

All proceeds from the evening are put towards

The Skin Cancer Foundation’s public awareness

programs. With more than 400 people in

attendance, the event helped to contribute more

towards the cause than the past two years

combined.

Celebrity hosts for the evening, Katie Couric, Sam

Champion, weather anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, and Jerry Penacoli, EXTRA

correspondent, helped The Skin Cancer

Foundation attract such a large audience. The

hosts each spoke about personal experiences with

skin cancer and announced the honorees.

Also in attendance were Dianne Wiest, Julia

Stiles, Daphne Oz, and many other celebrities.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to

!Wear a chapstick or lip balm with SPF in it

and apply it often. Many forget that your lips

are skin and can be damaged by the sun’s

from the tanning beds! The UV radiation

Britta Winans, executive board member of Lambda Pi Eta, heads an initiative to teach underprivileged high school students important communication skills and encourage college enrollment.

New Service Initiative for Philadelphia Senior helps to spread gift of communication to Philadelphia high school students

Students at Villanova University are known for their involvement both on and off campus. Thanks to a number of popular school-wide service opportunities, such as the St. Thomas of Villanova Day of Service and hosting the largest student-run Special Olympics Festival in the

country, the term “service” has become synonymous with “Villanovan.”

This year, however, a new service initiative has been formed. Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), a national honor society for students studying communication, has created a new service program in which its members travel to Germantown High School in West Philadelphia and hold educational workshops for the students. While Germantown High School boasts a

graduation percentage of 98%, the class population typically decreases by about half from freshman year to graduation due to students dropping out.

Britta Winans, senior communication major and editor-in-chief of LPH’s alumni newsletter, is

looking forward to the new initiative. “This is the first real time these students are realizing that college and a successful future aren’t out of reach for them.”

College recruiters will be visiting Germantown High School for the first time in November, which will give students the opportunity to interview directly with the schools. Assigned with the task of devising a curriculum for the academic workshops, Britta made sure to take this

into account. “We thought it was really important to teach the students about how to conduct themselves in an interview.” She has split up the program into two parts: resume building and interview skills in the first semester, to prepare for the college recruiters, and public speaking in the second semester.

Britta has been involved on Villanova’s campus since she transferred to the school in the fall semester of 2009. She is also a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Villanova Ambassadors, the Blue Key club, and a writer for the Villanovan.

Because of her strong interest in the communication field, she decided to become a member of Lambda Pi Eta. Since joining LPH, her passion has driven her to become more involved. In Spring 2011, Britta was inducted as the editor-in-chief of LPH’s alumni newsletter, the VCAN Connect.

While LPH is an organization dedicated to academic

excellence within the communication field, they also have dedicated themselves to service in the community. This past year, Lambda Pi Eta has participated in a number of service opportunities including Philabundance, a hunger relief organization serving the Delaware Valley; Back on My Feet, a nonprofit organization promoting self-sufficiency of those experiencing homelessness; and Food for Friends, an organization donating food to homeless shelters.

As a member of the executive board, Britta is not required to attend the workshops, but she remains passionate about the cause and chooses to participate anyway. “I really

think that as a member of LPH, we have an obligation to help others enhance their communication skills,” said Britta. LPH’s mission statement aims to promote and encourage professional development in communication. By providing the current students with the vision of an academic future, Britta hopes to encourage future classes at Germantown High School to continue their education as well. colleges across the country to ask students to donate meals from their meal plans to his cause. This bold initiative will help Food for Friends develop into a nationwide presence.

Dr. Bryan Crable, Chair of the Department of Communication, recalls Fiorenza as a student, saying, “I will always remember Derek as one of the most sincere and earnest students I’ve had the pleasure to meet. With everything that Derek has done to help his community, he deserves great thanks.” Fiorenza, however, does not believe that he should get all of the credit. He acknowledges the help of his family, friends and trust in God for his accomplishments. “It is not a singular act, and I am thankful for everyone that has been supportive,” he says. Through his commitment to service and strong faith, Fiorenza has been able to make his charitable dreams a reality.

Food for Friends is a program in which professional caterers and restaurants prepare meals to be served in homeless shelters within the Philadelphia PHWURSROLWDQ�DUHD��8QGHU�WKH�QRQSURÀW�umbrella of United Charitable Programs, Food for Friends has been an annual event since its inception – VHUYLQJ����PHDOV�LQ�LWV�ÀUVW�\HDU�����LQ�its second, 100 in its third and 2,000 at its most recent event.

Fiorenza explains, “[Food for Friends] is an initiative to give back, inspire and assist those in need. I see it as an opportunity to unite the community as a whole. If we help one community and one shelter at a time, then we can make a difference.” Food for Friends currently serves 16 shelters in nine Pennsylvania counties, serving communities from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.

Fiorenza is currently working to expand Food for Friends. Shelters in New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware will soon be added to the organization’s donation list. Fiorenza, however, has plans to reach neighborhoods beyond the immediate area. Adapting an idea popular for fundraisers at Villanova, Fiorenza plans to travel to different

As a student at Villanova University, Derek Fiorenza ’08 was incredibly involved on campus. Not only was he a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Villanova football team, he also found time to dedicate to service and volunteer work. Being actively involved in the community was something that Fiorenza truly valued and loved; however, he never imagined how great of an impact he would eventually be able to make after graduating from Villanova.

Besides his active involvement in campus life, Fiorenza also achieved academically and left a lasting impression on the Department of Communication faculty. Dr. Qi Wang, one of his professors, remembers, “He was overloading [on courses], an athlete and commuting, but his coursework performance was not compromised. I remember when I asked how he could live such a busy life; he grinned and said that he still had plenty of time to serve.”

During his senior year at Villanova, Fiorenza regularly served breakfast to underprivileged children in West Chester, Pa. This experience later inspired Fiorenza to create Fiorenza’s Food for Friends. He asked the caterer involved with the West Chester

Washington  Sentinels  Tackle  Domestic  Violence  Executive  Summary  

Domestic  violence  is  any  assault,  battery,  or  criminal  threat  from  one  member  of  a  

household  against  another  member  of  the  same  household.    Domestic  violence  does  

not  always  come  in  the  form  of  physical  abuse.    Psychological  abuse,  threats,  and  the  

forcing  of  sexual  acts  are  also  all  considered  domestic  violence.    Although  emotional  

and  psychological  abuses  are  not  considered  criminal  behavior,  they  can  open  the  

door  to  physical  abuse.    There  is  no  “typical”  abuser  or  victim  of  domestic  violence  –  

it  can  happen  to  anyone.    In  the  wake  of  a  number  of  professional  athletes  coming  

forward  as  both  abusers  and  victims,  the  Washington  Sentinels  Football  

Organization  believes  that  it  is  necessary  to  reinforce  its  no-­‐tolerance  policy  toward  

domestic  violence.  

Domestic  Violence  Within  Professional  Sports  

From  L.A.  Laker  Kobe  Bryant  to  figure  skater  Tonya  Harding,  a  surprising  number  of  

professional  athletes  have  been  convicted  of  domestic  violence.    While  the  number  

of  professional  athletes  who  become  abusers  is  not  disproportionate  from  the  

general  population,  a  larger  focus  is  placed  on  professional  athletes.    An  athlete’s

career  places  his  or  her  life  in  the  public  eye.    As  such,  it  is  vital  that  an  athlete  

understand  that  he  or  she  is  also  a  role  model  for  any  fans  of  his  or  her  team.    WWE  

wrestler  “Stone  Cold”  Steve  Austin  assaulted  his  wife.    Football  player  Jim  Brown  

threatened  to  kill  his  wife  and  vandalized  her  car.    Hockey  player  Sean  Burke  beat  

his  wife.    Professional  athletes  must  realize  that,  whether  they  want  the  

responsibility  or  not,  they  serve  as  role  models  for  future  generations.    Therefore,  it  

is  crucial  that  they  set  a  positive  example.  

Unfortunately,  even  in  the  public  eye,  professional  athletes  are  not  resistant  to  

harmful  physical  domestic  abuse.    In  the  cases  of  football  player  O.J.  Simpson  and  

WWE  wrestler  Chris  Benoit,  the  abuse  was  not  found  until  the  victim’s  death  came  

as  a  result  of  the  domestic  violence.    The  most  infamous  cases  of  domestic  abuse  

became  such  because  of  extreme  violence  such  as  this.  

Threatened  and  actual  physical  violence  is  illegal.    Many  people  who  abuse  their  

loved  ones  do  not  believe  that  some  of  their  actions  are  abusive  because  they  are  

not  criminal  acts.    While  domestic  violence  is  most  often  thought  of  as  physical  

abuse,  it  can  take  many  other  forms.    Verbal  threats,  forced  sexual  acts,  put-­‐downs,  

and  even  social  restrictions  are  all  forms  of  abuse.    Although  non-­‐violent  acts  of  

abuse  may  not  leave  physical  scars,  they  are  still  harmful  to  the  victim.    Both  violent  

and  non-­‐violent  acts  of  abuse  can  damage  the  victim  emotionally,  mentally,  and  

psychologically.  

Domestic  Violence  Myths  

Domestic  violence  is  very  commonly  misinterpreted.    There  are  many  myths  

existing  in  our  society  regarding  domestic  violence,  its  abusers,  and  its  victims.    It  is

a  commonly  held  belief,  for  example,  that  domestic  violence  is  solely  a  situation  in  

which  a  husband  physically  abuses  his  wife,  possibly  as  a  result  of  an  stress  or  some  

other  factor.  

An  abuser  may  be  a  husband,  boyfriend,  wife,  girlfriend,  fiance,  father,  or  mother.    

The  violence  caused  by  an  abuser  affects  everyone.    40%  to  60%  of  men  who  abuse  

women  also  abuse  children.    Anyone  can  be  a  victim.  

In  attempting  to  understand  domestic  violence,  many  people  attribute  abuse  to  

unrelated  factors.    Alcohol  use,  drug  use,  stress,  and  mental  illnesses  have  

commonly  been  attributed  as  the  cause  of  domestic  violence.    In  reality,  these  traits  

are  all  merely  excuses.    While  they  may  commonly  accompany  abuse,  domestic  

violence  happens  when  an  abuser  has  learned  and  chooses  to  abuse.  

One  might  ask  why  a  person  who  is  the  victim  of  domestic  violence  stays  in  an  

abusive  relationship.    Not  leaving  the  relationship  does  not  mean  that  the  victim  

wants  or  accepts  the  abuse.    It  may  simply  mean  the  victim  sees  no  way  out.    

Whatever  the  case  may  be,  no  one  deserves  abuse.    The  only  real  reason  behind  

domestic  violence  is  the  abuser.  

Taking  Action  Against  Domestic  Violence  

The  Washington  Sentinels  have  a  strict  no-­‐tolerance  policy  for  domestic  abusers.    As  

a  part  of  each  individual  athlete’s  contract  with  the  Sentinels,  they  are  required  to  

sign  a  domestic  violence  clause.    Any  athletes  who  have  been  convicted  of  domestic  

violence  in  the  past  will  not  be  considered  for  placement  on  the  team.    Any  athletes  

who  are  accused  of  domestic  violence  will  have  their  contracts  suspended

indefinitely.    Convicted  abusers  will  immediately  be  released  from  their  contracts  

with  no  chance  for  reinstatement.  

Professional  athletes  are  clearly  not  the  only  domestic  abusers,  so  the  Washington  

Sentinels  believe  it  is  imperative  to  spread  awareness  about  the  dangers  of  domestic  

violence.    The  Sentinels  have  teamed  up  with  Futures  Without  Violence  

(http://futureswithoutviolence.org),  formerly  known  as  the  Family  Violence  

Prevention  Fund,  in  an  effort  to  prevent  and  end  domestic  violence.    At  all  home  

games  throughout  the  season,  Futures  Without  Violence  will  have  an  information  

booth  set  up  to  educate  people  on  domestic  violence,  how  to  identify  it,  and  how  to  

escape  it.  

Domestic  violence  is  no  longer  something  that  can  be  swept  under  the  rug.    No  one  

asks  for  or  deserves  abuse.    The  first  steps  towards  ending  domestic  violence  are  

awareness  and  education.    The  Washington  Sentinels  are  stepping  up  to  tackle  

domestic  violence  –  are  you?

Lauren Lindberg After! battling! ADD! and! depression! throughout! high!school,! Lauren! learned! to! focus!herself! on! a!passion!of!hers!–!filmmaking.!!By!taking!any!video!and!film!classes!she!could,!Lauren!quickly!learned!that!she!had!a!genuine!talent!in!film.!!She!decided!to!use!her!newfound!voice!by!making!social! justice!documentaries,!and!has!won!nine!film!festival!awards!in!the!process.!!

Combining!her! new! passion! with! her!entrepreneurial! talents,!Zoe!began! selling! customLmade!clothes.!!She!started!by! selling! to! family,!friends,! and! classmates.!!After! her! first! dress! sold!for! $13,! her! business!expanded! faster! than! Zoe!ever!thought!it!could.!

Zoe!soon!realized!that!she!wasn’t!getting!the!bang!for!her! buck.! ! “I! was! selling!dresses!for!$40!that!should!have! been! selling! for!$250.”! ! To! sharpen! her!business! skills,! Zoe!enrolled! in! a! Network! for!Teaching!Entrepreneurship! (NFTE)!program,! which! seeks! to!give! lowLincome! students!access! to! lessons! about! business! and!entrepreneurship.!!At!NFTE,!Zoe!learned!that!the! $13! dress! she! sold! in! high! school! was!actually!worth!a!couple!hundred!dollars.!

The! program! taught! Zoe! how! to! create! a!business! plan! and! market! her! startup!company,! Zoe! Damacela! Apparel.!!Everything! that! she! learned! from! the!program!helped!her!to!win!her!top!honors!at!the! NFTE! Chicago! Citywide!Business! Plan! Competition!and! second! place! at! the!NFTE! National! Youth!Entrepreneurship!Competition! Meet.! ! “I!attribute! all! of! my!entrepreneurial! success! to!NFTE! because! that’s! how! I!learned! to! run! my! business.!!It!really!was!my!big!break.”!

As! a! reward! for! her! success! in! these!competitions,! Zoe! got! to! meet! President!Obama.! ! “I! gained! a! lot! of! publicity! and!media! attention! for! that,! which! led! me! to!being! on! the! Tyra! Show,! speaking! at! the!White! House,! being! featured! on! Oprah’s!Angel!Network,!and!even!being!on!the!cover!of!Seventeen%Magazine.”! !Seventeen’s! recent!“Pretty! Amazing”! contest! was! a! nationwide!search!for!a!regular!(nonLcelebrity)!girl!who!is!making!a!difference.!!Zoe’s!determination!to!surpass! all! challenges! presented! to! her!throughout! her! life,! as! well! as! her! genuine!personality!and!business!savvy,!helped!her!to!land!first!place!in!the!competition!and!a!spot!
