UT dorm room i n s p i r e d b y ant nests

This project consists of researching systems in nature to inspire a design for a dorm room. I studied ant nests and used the form of the nest to foster ideas about sharing and privacy. The shelving systemin the center of the dorm room is derived from the shape of the ant cubbies, public display shelving, or a shared cubby. The furniture also lends

main back wall shown in the elvation is coated with magnetic paint so the occupants can display pictures or posters without causing damage to the walls.

Urban Loft t h e g o l d e n m i c r o p h o n e

The Golden Microphone is a loft designed for Brad Lowery, a local music artist and my boyfriend. Brad works at Discovery Church as the worship leader . He has distinct personality characteristics that drive the design: organized, detail oriented, and loves people. Typical of a performer, he loves to display his life and work to others. Therefore, I wanted to create a space that would show other people and remind him of his

The private box contains the guest room and bathrooms, the Bob Dylan wall is concealing the writing room, the red wall marks the kitchen space and the brick subtly distinguishes the kitchen area from the living space.

[4.3]

The Cal Johnson Building, built in 1898, is situated in downtown Knoxville on State Street. For this project, we worked with three different clients who were interested in relocating to the downtown area and

tage, and the Glowing Body. Cal Johnson’s life was characterized by the idea of “rags to riches”. He went from a slave to one of the only rich African American men of his time. His duty to horses transformed into a passion of his own. He left his crooked ways of drinking and owned several saloons. Ultimately,he turned his oppression into success. The Cal Johnson building is seen as rags, oppression, and an obstacle. To transform this building into riches, one must go back to bare essentials, the rawstructure. My design builds a minimum amount of qalls which leaves an open plan, freedom.

Pet Safe c a l j o h n s o n b u i l d i n g

4.1

Pet Safe clients desired an environment that promotes safety and serenity with

-ibility in the grooming area. The grooming zone goes from groom to wash and the dryers are on rollers so they can be moved wherever is most convenient. Petsafe also had concerns about their existing merchandise space where pets can easily knock the merchandise with their tails, chew or play with it, or urinate on it. So I created custom furniture to prevent dogs from vandalizing the items and to form a cohesive look throughout the building. I created peep holes in the grooming space at a height

Knox Heritage c a l j o h n s o n b u i l d i n g

4.2

Knox Heritage currently is located in an undersized, cramped office . Relocating to downtown enables them to have more space for future expansion and additional interns as well as a shop space for some of their salvaged items. Again, using minimal construction, I have layed out the space by using objects to define zones. This allows for a very open feeling, as opposed to their current conditions.

Glowing Body c a l j o h n s o n b u i l d i n g

4.3

Glowing Body is a yoga studio located in east Knoxville. My design includes two studios, two massage rooms, a lounge, locker rooms, and retail space upon entry. The openness and the ability to see the massage rooms really creates a unique expe-rience because massage rooms are usually tucked away in the back somewhere.

Schoolhouse Comedy Club

05

In this group project, my two classmates and I were asked to design a space for a client who wanted to open up a comedy club and restaurant in the Knoxville airport area. This building used to be a schoolhouse in the early 1900s and is now home to an asbestos company as well as a business that sells school furniture and supplies. Our underlying concept that drove the design is the irony that a school is now essentially becoming a bar with a night club environment. We incorporated certain ironic moments such as the big clock on the wall (top). Where as time is important in school in order to stay on a schedule,it now becomes an ironic moment in the lounge because no one is concerned about the time anymore.

423 Studio a d v e r t i s i n g a g e n c y

06

423 Studio is a full service advertising agency who caters to businesses, companies, and non-profit organizations in Chattanooga. Clients are regularly hosted on site, following a work pattern known as the hosting pattern. When customers are on site, there exists a great opportunity to impress the company’s image on them. Therefore, the experience needs to be carefully managed. Studio 423’s office is layed out so that the client can see as much or as little as the firm sees fit. From each of the three main view points, one can see the creative team working together, the firm’s work on a large scale, and social activity that shows community and unity in the work place.

Disclaimer: I know this boldness does not fly with corporate if it were a real project.
