Each year that my son’s birthday rolls around and he wants to have a slumber party, my wife nods yes and then weeps in the coat closet, and I paint signs that read: You Break, You Buy!

After all, having one pre-teen boy in the house is grounds for insanity. Inviting five more boys to the house borders on criminal intent.

When it boils right down to it, boys are gross, ill mannered, loud, and destructive. And they know this. In fact, they celebrate it. But, unfortunately, as long as other parents have slumber parties for their kids and invite my son

to them, I am forced to reciprocate. So, once again, my wife and I opened the doors last weekend for an overnight birthday bash in honor of our son.

And, as is customary, each child’s parent stood on my porch, pushed their son inside the door, and repeated the standard line we all learned in Lamaze: “Call me if my son is any trouble.”

Then, he or she ran to his or her car, unplugged the cell phone, and bought a one-way ticket to Bermuda...or so it felt standing there waving goodbye to the last car as six boys slid down the

stairs on the good sofa cushions and into my bad knee.

I turned and ordered them into the kitchen for dinner.

I, however, made the mistake of hesitating, and as I hobbled slowly into the kitchen, the food was devoured.

I stared blankly at the empty pizza boxes. “Did they stuff them in their pockets?” I asked my wife, who, incidentally, had had a slice actually in her hand, but when she blinked, someone stole her toppings. Suddenly, a loud, obnoxious burp resonated from the table. “That’s burp-code,” some blond haired kid announced.

“It means we’re thirsty.”

I walked over with pop and filled each cup. I stood staring for a moment.

”What’s wrong?” someone asked.

”Well,” I began. “When I was a kid, if we didn’t say ‘thank you,’ our drinks were taken away.” Another kid belched. “That’s burp-code for

‘bummer.’

”The children finished what they didn’t spill and headed back upstairs to play - which basically meant throwing toys at each other until they punched a hole in the wall and/or someone started to bleed. Occasionally, I swept through the

house noting the damage.

Later, I walked into the living room and asked my wife:

“Who is the red headed kid?”

”That’s your son’s friend, Richard. Why?”

”Because, I caught him jumping on our bed with a can of orange pop in his hands.”

Her eyes went wide. “Did you tell him to stop?!” “No, I asked him if he needed pretzels,” I answered. “Of course I told him to stop.””What did he say?” “He said we were really cool parents because we have orange dots on our ceiling. He said his mom and dad only bought a white ceiling.”

My wife’s face sank. “Tell me you’re joking.”

”I wish I were. But, don’t worry, Richard also thought it was really cool that the ceiling matches the bed spread...oh, and your pillow.”

She sat slowly down like a heart attack victim. “You know, next year, I think that you need to make bigger warning signs.”

”No way,” I retorted, sitting down next to her. “Next year, I’m printing on the invitations: ‘All children must be accompanied by an adult.’”
