VICE PRINCIPALS’

CORNER Greetings Kaua`i High School community!

School year 2017-2018 has gone by fast. We wish the best to the graduates of the Class of 2018 as they embark on new chapters in their lives. Through our collective hard work and dedication, Kaua`i High School students, staff and families have demonstrated many accomplishments. As we continue on our journey to Educate, Engage and Empower all students to be successful, we would like to remind families of some of the important information for next school year.

ID Badges: At Kaua`i High School, student safety is a priority. One of the ways we keep students safe is to require students to wear ID badges. This is a recommendation from the Kaua`i Police Depart-ment and is consistent with best safety practices across the nation. At KHS, students are required to wear ID badges so that they are easily visible at all times. Students found not wearing an ID will be issued a detention.

School Planners: Each student will be issued a KHS planner at the beginning of the year. The purpose of the planner is to help students stay organized as well as serve as a pass when leaving the classroom during class time. Any student who is not in their class during class time should have a planner indicating where the student is going that is signed by their teacher. Being out of class without permission is considered truancy and may result in school consequences and possibly an arrest. Replacement planners can be purchased through the student activities coordinator.

Senior Class of 2019: In order to inform families well in advance, there will be a mandatory meeting for seniors and their families in August of 2018. This meeting will go over the senior agreement including important information about the attendance requirement (currently no more than 9 days or 40 individual periods of unexcused absences from the start of the school year). Other important information such as procedures for ordering cap and gown, ticket distribution and information on commencement activities (Senior Luau, Senior Picnic, Commencement Ceremony, and Project Graduation) will also be discussed.

Parking and Drop Off: We would like to remind parents and guardians that there are two drop off points for dropping off students in the morning. One is located at the bus shelter on the west side of the campus. The other is a pull around by the gym on the east side of campus. Parking passes for students will be offered in early August so please pay attention to the daily announcements.

I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer. We look forward to seeing everyone next school year!

There is a new fad among middle and high school students that has been on the rise over the past decade, one

that has health risks and is against the law for anyone under the age of 21 – VAPING! Youth across the state are

using Electronic Smoking Devices (ESDs; also called e-cigarettes or vapes) at an alarming rate. Here on Kaua‘i,

24.7 percent of high school students and 23 percent of middle school students reported using ESDs in the past

30 days, according to the 2017 Hawai‘i State Department of Health Youth Behavior Risk Survey (YRBS). This

is a significant increase in youth use, even though it has been illegal in the State of Hawai‘i for youth to purchase

or possess ESDs since 2016.

What Are ESDs?

Electronic smoking devices (ESDs) are battery-powered smoking devices that were originally designed to look

and feel like regular cigarettes. They use cartridges filled with a liquid (e-liquid or e-juice) that contains nicotine,

flavorings, and other chemicals. A battery-operated heating device in the ESD converts the e-liquid into a vapor,

which the person inhales. That's why using an ESD device is known as "vaping." Common electronic smoking

devices are: electronic cigarettes, electronic cigars, electronic cigarillos, electronic pipes, hookah pipes and pens,

box mods, and any e-liquid cartridge, bottle, or other component of the device or related product, whether or

not it is sold separately.

Regardless of their exterior design, all ESDs are constructed to heat e-liquid to produce vapor for inhalation.

Most e-liquids contain nicotine, all contain a range of chemicals. Some chemicals found in e-liquids are

approved by the Food and Drug Administration as “generally safe for human consumption” (orally), however,

these same chemicals can be quite dangerous when heated and inhaled into the lungs. Research shows that

exposure to ESD vapor can lead to serious health risks such as respiratory tissue damage, cardiovascular disease,

and cancer.

Important information for parents/guardians of school-aged youth Spring 2018

Information on Electronic Smoking Devices Spring 2018

E-liquids contain the highly addictive chemical nicotine. Among its many

negative effects on the body, nicotine interferes with normal brain and lung

development, increases blood pressure, and can cause reproductive harm.

Many e-liquids contain high amounts of nicotine, which could cause

addiction and immediate overdose symptoms (experienced between 40-

60mg/mL). Vapor from ESDs has been described as a “harmless water

vapor” by the tobacco industry, however, water is not an ingredient in e-

liquids. ESD vapor also contains cancer-causing chemicals such as arsenic,

benzene, cadmium, lead, and nickel. In addition to exposure to toxic

chemicals, adolescents who use ESDs or are exposed to the vapor have

higher rates of asthma, and ear, nose and throat infections when compared

to youth who are not exposed to the vapor.

Hawai‘i State Law

Hawai‘i State law prohibits the sale or furnishing of tobacco products, including ESDs and e-liquids, to any-

one under 21 years of age. Under this law, which has been in effect since January 2016, youth and young

adults under 21 cannot possess or consume tobacco products. There is a $500 fine for anyone who furnishes

tobacco or ESD products to a person under the age of 21 (§712.1258 and §321.212 Hawai‘i Revised Statutes).

TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT VAPING

With the tremendous increase of youth using ESDs and the intense marketing on local radio stations, it may

seem that vaping is a safe alternative to combustible tobacco, but these products can cause negative health

effects.

What can parents say to their pre-teens and teens about vaping?

• Instead of leading with facts consider starting with genuine curiosity, ask; “What do you know

about vaping/e-cigarettes?” or “Do you have classmates who vape?” Tip: do not accuse your child

of vaping or of doing something wrong.

• To get teenagers to take our concerns about vaping seriously, start by recognizing that they already

may have first-hand observations or personal experiences to arrive at their own conclusions.

• Be positive, ask open-ended questions rather than repeating negative statements. For example:

“Do you know why some of your peers choose to vape?”

• Share YOUR concerns with your child, they will appreciate that you care, even when speaking

about products with potential harm.

For more information about ESD use in Kaua‘i County, please contact the Kaua‘i Community Coalition

Coordinator for the Coalition for a Tobacco-Free Hawai‘i, Valerie Saiki at [email protected] or visit our
