The graduation of 13 knakamaoli medical students on May

15 is a landmark occasion. It

    marks the most Hawaiians to

ever have matriculated in a single

class in the history of John A.

    Burns School of Medicine.

Compare this number to five (5)

in the next three classes combined.

To mark this historic event,Ahahui o n Kauka and the De-

    partment of Native Hawaiian

    Aloha mai e n kauka,

This is a special time for uskauka its been 35 years

since the University of Ha-waii graduated its firstclass in 1975. There werefour of us then, joining ahandful other Hawaiians inmedicine. Now we are pre-paring to welcome 13 newdoctors into the fold.

We hosted the biennialPRIDoC in 2008 on Kauaiand last year we partneredin a major fundraiser in

order to establish a scholar-ship fund. We also took alook at our organizational

capacity and did some stra-tegic rethinking of the Huias the Hawaiian health en-vironment has changedsince we were founded in1998.

Weve got a slate of con-tinuing education eventsand community serviceopportunities planned for2010, and were alreadyplanning a huakai in 2011.

We look forward to see-ing you at the AnnualMeeting immediately fol-

lowing the khei cere-mony on May 15 at theUH Center for HawaiianStudies. Participate in theKhei Ceremony, wel-come the new kauka, meet up with other col-leagues, pick up yourKauka Hui t-shirt, andelect the next board ofdirectors

    Please join us!

    Since Ahahui o n Kauka

    was founded, we have al-

    ways supported the devel-

    opment of more Hawaiians

    in medicine. This is why

    were calling on all mem-

    bers and not-yet members

to come out and welcomethe 2010 graduates. Our

    by-laws identify kanaka

    medical students as Kauka

    Haumana, and over the

    years, there are been vary-

    ing initiatives to identify,

    enumerate and mentor

    these haumana.

    KA LAMA KKUI. Three

    years ago, a motivated

group of haumana formedan organization at UH

    called Ka Lama Kkui ac-

    cepting as membership

    indigenous medical stu-

    dents at JABSOM. Each

    year the officers change.

    The Kauka Hui has been

    happy to support its activi-

    ties over the years.

    Active members of

    Ahahui o n Kauka are

    defined as Native Hawai-

    ian allopathic (M.D.) and

    osteopathic (D.O.) physi-

    cians.

    There are more than 100

active members, althoughthe numbers of Hawaiian

    doctors worldwide is

    inching up to nearly 300.

    Most are in-state primary

    care physicians. Affiliate

    members are physicians

    who practice in Hawaiian

    communities or, by virtue

    of their specialty, have sig-

    nificant Hawaiian patient

    bases.

    A current member roster is

    enclosed.

    We are always hoping to

    identify Hawaiian physi-

    cians that we dont know,

    such as those in training

    abroad. Let us know!
