The bad news, Michael Altshuler,well-known motivational speaker, as-serts, is that time flies. Te good news,he declares, is you are the pilot.

Seasons greetingsrom my desk at80 King Street. It took some doing butI now share comortable office accom-modation between the 80 buildingand good old 74.

I am not sure I agree with Michael Alt-shuler that time flies is bad news. I seeit as a act o lie and something thatwe need to actor into our everydayunctioning. Hence I agree with himthat you are the pilot is good news; itmeans you are in control.

February 2014 marks the 40th anniver-sary o the Kingston Bookshop. imeflies. It seems like just a ew years agowe were celebrating our 30th anniver-sary. Te decade since then has had itsups and downs but under the directiono the Almighty we have been able topilot the KB ship and as we come to thisnew milestone we are able to look backon many successes. I will not list themhere; we have a ull year ahead in whichto do that. Suffice it to say: Hitherto

    hath the Lord helped us.

ime has actored in our situation notonly in respect o the number o yearsand our successes but even more im-portantly in how we have used the timeallotted to us. ime is probably theonly commodity that is given to manon undisputedly equal terms. Tere are24 hours in a day and whatever yourstatus or position that is what you haveto work with.

    1. Educate Yourself about

    the Products that You Sell

Large, impersonal chains dont haveto be super knowledgeable aboutwhat they sell their l ow prices givethem a huge edge over the competi-tion. o compete with the big guys, you have to have in-depth knowl-

edge about every item that you sell.Learn the pros and cons o each itemthat you carry. Keep up to date onnew developments, and tr y to stockthe most current models.

    2. Be Enthusiastic about

    Your Products

A customer is a lot more likely tobuy what youre selling when he getsthe sense that youre genuinely en-thusiastic about it. It helps tremen-dously to be a an o the productsthat you sell.

    3. Be Friendly, Not Oppres-

siveI youve ever been harassed by astore salesperson, you know howoff-putting and aggravating it canbe. Give a customer that kind o ex-perience and you can orget aboutearning any repeat business romthem. You should make your pres-ence known and be riendly, but youshouldnt hover over your customersor breathe down their necks. Suffo-cating a customer is a surefire wayto chase them away. Breathing spaceis essential here, so resist the urge toollow their every move. In the longrun, this strategy will work out well.

    4. Ask the Customer Ques-

tionsAsking questions is a lot more e-ective than pushing a product on acustomer at least, it is i you wantto make lots o sales. When youask questions about what they wantor need, you show customers thatyou care. Tis is especially effective

when it is done in a low-key andlaid-back way. Keep the pressureto an absolute minimum and makeit clear that you genuinely want tohelp them find the right thing.

    5. Avoid Asking Can I

Help You?How many times have you walkedinto a store, and asked i you needany help and said, No thanks, Imjust looking? Its probably hap-pened more times than you can re-member. Asking a customer that, islike handing them a card that ex-cuses them rom interacting withyou. A better way to go is to let themwalk in and get the lay o the land.Once theyve roamed or a minuteor so, ask them a question based onwhere they are browsing. Youre less

likely to be blown off that way.

    6. Sell Add-Ons, But be

Savvy About ItCross-selling related items to a cus-tomer is a tried-and-true way toboost sales. It tends to annoy people, though, when you do it at the regis-ter. By that time, the customer has

made his decision and is reon with his lie. Being peseven more can sour the wence or him. Instead, suggeitems while he is still out opossible, put a personal spinrelating stories about the that youve put to good use.Putting stellar sales techniqu

egies to use can make an aerence in your overall suretail game. Its even bettecan bolster those strategiepeople who are knowledgeand genuinely enthusiastic. goal here is to make people wback again and again. Whewith positive thoughts abostaff, they are a lot more liback. Repeat sales are cruciaing a robust business, so dokeep the above points in mcustomers develop througsive, riendly sales techniqusteer people to buy what yo

MILESTONES TO 40In this issue we feature the longest serving member of the Kingston Bookshop staff, Mr Boris Palmer. He has been with the company for 33 ofthe 40 years of its existence and is a striking example of KBs appreciation of, and penchant to reward, hard work, diligence and commitment.

    oris Palmerrom holidayrker to manager

is Palmer has been describedn important player in the his-o Kingston Bookshop (KB) byss a person than Chairman andging Director, the Hon Stead-

Fuller. Tis, in relation to hisg contribution to the companyll as his enviable position as thet serving member o staff at KB.

almer, like many o the staff at KB,the journey as a Summer Worker.m, summer 1980 marked the start

hat relationship continued through3 when on completion o his highl career he was asked to stay on.he rest reveals an interesting story.

cation is 70b, the first, and at thisonly store in the chain. As Boris

it: 70b helped me develop myess sense and ability to know prod-nside out. It was there that I got myaste o management afer being ap-ed Stationery Supervisor by thenman and MD Mr Leslie Ridout.

has not only worked long in the in-y, he has been instrumental in theh and profitability o the Kings-ookshop. When KB started to ex-and created a ull service Statio-

Centre, Boris was the first personame to mind to run that Centre.

ed first at 95 Church Street and laterKing Street, Mr Palmer was head o

the unit with responsibility or theirown purchasing, selling, promotionand distribution o stationery itemsin Jamaica. His ability to lead saw thefledgling Stationery Centre growingrom a concept to a major challeng-er in the local Stationery industry.

Over the years under his leader-

ship manuacturers have awardedKB exclusive distribution rightsor their products. Internationalgiants such as Monami, Stabiloand soon to come Maped, Helixand Buffalo have helped to orma ormidable orce in the Kings-ton Bookshops stationery armour. On this point, MD Fuller pointsout: Boris can be considered a pio-

neer o KBs Stationery Department. His early work in this area has been otremendous benefit and is reflected inwhat the Department is today. Borishas the last word on this: Mr Fullerguided my development all the way. Heallowed me to grow and I can say heand Mrs Fuller, a powerul orce besidehim, have made me what I am today.

Since April 2013, Boris Palmer nowocusses on the Purchasing o Statio-nery items. Tis shif came as part oa realignment exercise in the strategicdirection o KB. His task: to use hisexpertise in identiying trends and hishighly honed skills o negotiation to getthe best prices at all times or KB - oneo the many strategies that keep KB #1!

Mr Palmer is a recipient o theBook Industry Association o Ja-maica Award in the en Year cat-egory; we look orward to his recog-nition or the wenty Year Award.

Outside o work Boris is a keep fitbuff. He maintains his youthul lookand (almost) slender figure by jog-

ging or walking every day, eating sen-sibly and participating regularly in theSigma 5K run held annually. Direc-tor o Corporate Services, Mrs SoniaFuller asserts: Keeping fit is not newor Boris. I remember when he usedto jog down Mountain View Avenue toWindward Road to catch his drive orwork. He was always fitness conscious.

For some o you who may not know,Boris guides his daily living by twopowerul principles: to be comort-able in your own skin which to himmeans to know and accept who youtruly are and being proud to reflectthat act and to know your limi-tations, which when interpretedmeans not to be araid to ask or help

or guidance; the experience o oth-ers will help to teach you wisdom.

His style o coaching mirrors thato Jose Mourinho o Chelsea and his

management skills resemble that o or-mer Manchester United manager AlexFerguson but he preers i you reer tohim as Arsene Wenger, the managero Arsenal. Who are we talking about?

We are talking about Steadman Ar-sene Wenger Fuller Jr, the man thathas guided Kingston Bookshop toplay at the highest level o Business

    The Man of the Moment

    House Football, the Division One.

We can recall at the start o the oot-ball season that Coach SteadmanFuller Jnr predicted that KingstonBookshop will qualiy or DivisionOne next season. When he made

this prediction, many o his criticsthought that this was outside the KBleague and was never possible.

Coach Fuller recognized that i heis to make well on his promise he isgoing to need the Human Capital, one that his Father Steadman Fulleremploys that made KB the numberone bookstore in the Caribbean. SoCoach Fuller went out and assem-bled a group o individuals, someo whom, at the time, were playingootball at the highest level withinthe country.

Afer getting these skilul players tocomplement those that were alreadyhere, Coach Fuller appointed two ohis more experienced players ONeilLynch and Jermaine Simms as part

o the coaching team. Tis manage-ment team allowed Coach Fuller toconcentrate on what he does bestand that is coaching.

With all this in place the rest washistory as Kingston Bookshop willbe a orce to be reckoned with at thehighest level o Business House 5-A-side Football in 2014.

Te Next time you see and his players at your sment and/or parking lot plhearty congratulation to thwell done. You have all mand we look orward to team dominating Division
