From the Dean’s DeskWelcome to our third edition of the KBS Chronicle.

One of the real lessons of recent years has been the need for business schools to stay alert to rapidly changing market demands. Here at the KBS, we continue to review our programmes and to develop new programme offerings that are proving very attractive to the market. At undergraduate level, we will be commencing our new BA in International Business next September. This is a pioneering and innovative new degree that allows students to spend one year of their study overseas in a combination of work placement and study at a university. Demand for the programme has been very high; indeed at a time when demand for undergraduate business programmes remained static at a national level, demand for KBS programmes increased by a remarkable 22%. At postgraduate level, we are also launching new programmes in Taxation, Economic Analysis, Risk Management & Insurance and Finance & Information Systems. I invite you to visit our new website, www.ul.ie/kbs, for more information on these new programmes and on our full suite of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The past six months has also been a time of change in KBS. After a distinguished and hugely influential time as Dean, Prof Donal A. Dineen retired from the University at the end of December 2011. During his time as Dean and, prior to that, as Associate Dean, Donal was a key contributor to the life and culture of KBS. He leaves behind a significant legacy, not only in the form of the new Kemmy Building, but also in the more intangible (but equally important) form of a generation of business leaders whom he has helped to shape.

The Dean’s Office has also lost the services of another early retiree, Mary Humphreys, who worked alongside not only Donal, but also his predecessors, Prof Barra O’Cinneide and Prof Noel Whelan. A wonderful PA who matched elegance with loyalty, she will be sorely missed.

The last few weeks has also seen the retirement of Prof Tom Kennedy, a man who epitomises all that is good about KBS and who, over a period of almost thirty years, helped to embed a culture of excellence and respect in all that we do. We thank them sincerely for their significant contributions to KBS and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

As we near the end of the academic year, we are looking forward to welcoming our colleagues on the KBS International Advisory Board to the school. We are also planning celebrations to mark twenty-five years of MBA education at the KBS, making it one of the longest established MBA programmes in the country. In addition, we continue to re-establish links with KBS graduates. In this context, the Chronicle has proven invaluable as a means of re-connecting with our alumni. So, if you are a graduate, please feel free to email the editor and let us know what you are doing.

Distinctive Undergraduate Experience with the BA in International BusinessThe Kemmy Business School is delighted to launch its new BA in International Business degree. This pioneering new programme provides a distinctive undergraduate experience and accepts its first cohort of students in September 2012. Aiming to attract creative and critically-engaged students, this degree broadens the curriculum available to business undergraduates, facilitating student-centred learning and choice. This programme responds to EU, Government and University objectives of achieving greater student mobility and internationalisation as well as adopting a student-centred approach to learning.

Providing students with strong technical knowledge in a number of key business disciplines, the BA also includes modules that encourage students to understand how business decisions are and should be

undertaken in a globalised world that is shaped by political, social and legal issues. Choice and flexibility are central to the BA in International Business as the programme structure allows students to design their own degree by selecting subjects from a suite of relevant and interesting modules. A comprehensive range of business modules are on offer from the subject areas of Economics, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, Mathematics, Human Resources, Management, Accounting, Communications, Risk and Insurance. In addition, students can select modules from the disciplines of Politics, Sociology, History, Cultural Studies and Law. Students may also opt to take a language option – French, German, Japanese or Spanish - as part of their degree. Thus, throughout the programme, students can choose modules that reflect the subject areas they deem necessary and most interesting for their academic and career

goals. Students of the BA programme will spend their third year abroad, thereby fostering personal development and building important cross-cultural communication and critical-thinking skills. In a globalised, rapidly-changing business environment, graduates with specialist knowledge supported by a broader understanding of business and society will be well positioned to succeed in the business environment. Students graduating with a BA in International Business are also prepared to pursue a wide range of taught and research postgraduate programmes. Crucially, it is a programme that situates business in an international framework, exploring its political, social, cultural, legal and ethical contexts. If you would like to find out more, please see the KBS website: www.ul.ie/business or contact the course director, Dr. Caoilfhionn Ní Bheacháin: [email protected]

The Corporate MBA programme at the Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the graduation of its first cohort of graduants. In 2009 the MBA programme was redesigned with a new form of business leader in mind. The programme has five key learning themes that run through the two years of the programme and they include:

internationalisation; managerial vision and competencies, entrepreneurship and innovation, strategic thinking and leadership. These themes cover the full range of general management issues relevant to contemporary business practice. The MBA has a greater focus on integrative teaching methodologies including networking; mentoring and an international summer school. The MBA programme emphasises

core academic qualities of critical thinking, insightful analysis and learner-centred pedagogical outcomes while developing the management and leadership skills required by MBA graduates in the modern world.

International workshops are a key element of the Corporate MBA programme at UL. The 2011 international workshop took place in Beijing, China. The workshop included visits and talks given by senior level management of: IBM, BMW, Ericsson’s; Novo Nordisk; Crowncork; and Rainbow Labs. Guest lectures were given by Dr Brendan Smith (LSE); Mr Dirk Laermans (CRH and Orientas) and Mr Ernest Yeung (Changsheng Fund). Cultural events included visits to the Great Wall of China; Jingshan Park, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

We look forward to you being part of the planned celebrations of the MBA programme and if you wish to join us, please contact the MBA Course Director, Dr Naomi Birdthistle at [email protected].

KBS Marketing Students Raise Awareness of Student Volunteering in ULStudents of the MSc in Marketing, Consumption and Society programme at the KBS have been commended for their recent marketing campaigns promoting student volunteering on campus. This live marketing project, which is an integral part of the module Marketing & Society, focused on the themes of employability, personal learning, supportive communities and connectedness to raise awareness of volunteering among

UL students. It also promoted the recently launched UL President’s Volunteering Award (PVA) where UL students receive an award from the President of UL for their volunteering efforts.

During the autumn semester, MSc students launched and ran creative and impactful campaigns on campus using print & electronic media, promotions and events

to raise awareness of volunteering to UL students. The campaign was primarily funded and supported by UL Student Affairs with Snap Printing generously contributing to the printing costs. As part of the evaluation process, the students formally presented their campaigns to a panel of experts including representatives from the Student Affairs and the UL President’s Volunteer Award Working Group and the winning campaign Volunteering within Supportive Communities was selected. Using the slogan “Volunteer with Support”, MSc students Joanne Dunne, Neil Fennell, Sophie Mitchell, Ruslan Mustafajev and Lizzy O’Halloran developed a highly creative and imaginative campaign raising awareness of the supportive nature of volunteering communities and organisations to UL students.

“This live project represents an innovative and impactful method of engaging students to develop meaningful and effective campaigns to promote the value of student volunteering to their peers on campus” states Dr Deirdre O’Loughlin, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the KBS.

The campaigns were showcased at a recent prize-giving exhibition in UL and selected campaign material will be directly used in future promotional initiatives to market student volunteering in UL.Pictured above is the Student Volunteering Campaign winning team with faculty from UL.

Enterprise Ireland Think Outside the Box AwardsEnterprise Ireland recently launched a major drive to spur entrepreneurial students to develop innovative business proposals as part of the 30th ‘Think outside the Box Awards’ competition at the Kemmy Business School. This is a great opportunity for ambitious and enterprising students to build a real-world business venture and at the same time be in with a chance to win a prize from the overall €30,000 cash prize fund, and €30,000 consultancy fund, which includes a €10,000 first prize. The ‘Think outside the Box’ competition, which is co-sponsored by Invest Northern Ireland, Cruickshank Intellectual Property Attorneys, Mammoth Advertising and now Grant Thornton, is open to all full time third level students in the island of Ireland.

Launching the competition, Jerry Moloney, Enterprise Ireland’s Director Mid West Region, said: ‘We encourage them to team

up with their colleagues and friends from other faculties to think outside the box, innovate and collaborate on coming up

with business proposals that will help them explore their ideas and own appetite for going into business for themselves’.

Prof Donal Dineen Retires as KBS DeanProfessor Donal A. Dineen retired as Dean of the KBS in September 2011. Prof Dineen joined the institute in 1973 when it opened as the National Institute of Higher Education, Limerick (NIHE,L) and has been Professor of Public Policy Analysis since 1997. He had been a head of department in the Business School since 1984. For almost 40 years, Prof. Dineen has been at the centre of business education in Limerick at the University of Limerick.

As Dean of the KBS since 2002, Donal has overseen a multi-million euro transformation of the Kemmy Business School with the addition of state of the art facilities which includes specialist laboratories and the first simulated trading floor in Ireland. He also led the School’s drive towards international accreditation across a number of programmes.

Prof. Dineen was Chairman of the National Committee for Economics and Social Sciences (of the Royal Irish Academy) and served on Ireland’s first Social Sciences Research Council. He also chaired the Economics Committee of the National Economic

and Social Forum and was a member of Ireland’s first Aviation Appeals Panel (both of these were Ministerial appointments). He is member of the Irish Economic Association and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 1990, Prof Dineen was awarded the EU Commissioner’s ERASMUS Prize for Ireland for outstanding contribution to the ERASMUS programme in its first phase of operation, 1987 to 1990. His research interests include tourism policy evaluation, economic impact studies and issues relating to the social economy.

Prof. Dineen said “It has been a privilege to be part of the process of building Ireland’s first independent university in the history of the state. Since university status was granted in 1989, the Kemmy Business School has been transformed in terms of the quality and diversity of its faculty and programmes, while retaining its uniqueness for being innovative, entrepreneurial and attuned to the needs of the business community and society. The School is well placed to build an enviable international reputation as one of Ireland’s leading business schools”.

In December 2011, the Public Policy, Enterprise, Governance and Sustainability (PPEGS) Seminar Series at the KBS, hosted a seminar on “The Euro Crisis – Capital Markets versus Politics”. The participants were John Walsh, Editor of Business and Finance magazine, Lorcan Roche Kelly, TrendMacro, Hedge Fund Advisor, Dr. Stephen Kinsella, Department of Economics and Dr. Finbarr Murphy, Department of Accounting and Finance. The session was chaired by Dr. Martin Mullins, Department of Accounting and Finance. The aim of the seminar was to

examine the apparently vexed relationship between States and financial markets. The panel members were unanimous is dismissing this binary relationship between politicians and markets as a gross over-simplification and sought to lend a degree of precision, in the main absent from media coverage, as to the nature of market participants involved in sovereign debt markets. The panel was also sceptical of the more doom laden predictions of the demise of the Euro. The consensus was that the Euro project was too far advanced and too important to fail.

KBS Community Communication Workshops The KBS is working with community development organisations in Limerick faced with the challenges of communicating their work to a wider audience as well as enhancing internal organisational communication. Developing good communications strategies is an issue which is particularly significant for marginalised communities in the non-profit sector faced with increasing financial and personnel constraints.Dr. Matthew Cannon, Lecturer in Communications at the KBS, developed a series of Communications Workshops to assist local community groups in developing a range of communication skills. His KBS colleague, Dr. Caoilfhionn Ní Bheacháin also contributed to the development and running of the workshops. The workshops are used by local organisations such as Doras Luimni, the New Communities Partnership and the Northstar Family Support Project in Moyross

and are tailored to meet the needs of each organisation. The topics covered include interpersonal communication, communication strategies, active listening skills and conflict management/resolution. The workshops can be run as a stand-alone to address specific communication needs, as was the case for the Northstar Family Support Project which wanted to focus on aspects of conflict resolution through two programmes: one for staff and one for clients. They have also been run as part of a larger programme, as was the case with the Doras Luimni workshop which was part of an overall programme on Leadership for entrepreneurs from new communities. The KBS has a strong commitment to community development in the region which is evidenced in the time and commitment of its staff to improving local development projects. Research Collaboration between KBS and MSSI on European FP7 ProjectSANOWORK is a European partnership research project funded under the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). As partners on the project, researchers at the KBS will work in collaboration with researchers in the Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI) at UL to examine issues around the insurability of nanotechnology.

After consultation with the industry, the project aim is to generate a model which will overcome the attitudinal and legal issues which represent hurdles to insurability at present. A combination of methodologies from material science, financial mathematics and toxicological data for accidental and acute exposures to nanomaterials will be used to overcome the problem of quantifying risk associated with exposure to nanomaterials

In terms of risk management, SANOWORK will create risk reduction strategies for the nanotechnology sector and generate data that will assist in the transfer of risk to the insurance industry. The second task is seen as key for the sustainability of industrial scale nanotechnology based production. In this part of the project, the goal is to create a more objective underwriting process through the utilisation of data sets based upon an analysis of the application of nanomaterials and insights from the field of financial/actuarial mathematics. To this end, the group will bring together the three main stakeholders namely, the regulatory bodies, the insurance industry and the nanotechnology sector. Given that, in insurance terms, the project is examining new and emerging risks the work is considered to represent an important step

towards ensuring that the risks associated nanotechnology can be more objectively assessed and ultimately become manageable within the insurance paradigm.

One of the principal aims of this project is to develop and validate a quantitative model for the risk assessment of nanomaterials in order to facilitate the underwriting of nanotechnology related activities. The main focus is on the underwriting of compensation of workers exposed to nanomaterials production, processing and handling. By providing precise risk characterisation of nanotechnology processes, SANOWORK will potentially play an important role in facilitating the underwriting of athe nanotechnology sector. This achievement would represent a major step forward both in terms of the sustainability and the competitiveness of European based nanotechnology companies. For more information on the project, contact Dr Martin Mullins at the KBS.: [email protected]

A costs/benefits analysis of both risk reduction and risk transfer strategies will be undertaken in close consultation with nanotechnology industry stakeholders. Whilst it may be possible to reduce the risk around production and therefore make some gains in term of health and safety and risk transfer costs (insurance premiums), attention needs to be given to the effectiveness of nanomaterials. There is a need to develop risk control strategies that do not simply displace health and safety risk toward operational risk. Ultimately, the economic well-being of the organisation and indeed the industry needs to be protected. In considering cost/benefits, there is also a need

to factor in legal/regulatory requirements. The work of SANOWORK in characterising risk in nanotech production will make it more possible to arrive at objective judgements on the balance between the costs and the benefits associated with any changes in production protocols.
