GENEVA – Clara Van-

Bosch was born 100 years ago

on Jan. 24, 1914, in a house on

Dean Street in St. Charles and

had not been on a bicycle for

50 years – that is, until she just

rode an adult-sized tricycle

provided by the Mill Race Cy-

clery of Geneva.

“I really enjoyed it,” Van-

Bosch said. “It was a big sur-

prise to me. Four girls came

in my room and said, ‘Clara,

we have a surprise.’ And they

took me out in the front and

all of a sudden, I see this guy

coming with this three-wheel-

er. Oh my God, I was surprised

myself.”

VanBosch has been at

Briarwood Healthcare at

GreenFields of Geneva while

recovering from an illness. Ac-

tivities coordinator Erin Mc-

Cart learned that VanBosch

loved to ride a bike and missed

the activity.

She called Mill Race Cy-

clery owner Bruce Heidlauf to

see if he could participate in a

bike-riding surprise for Van-

Bosch – and he was immedi-

ately on board.

“I was kind of thinking, ‘Is

she actually going to be able to

ride?’ I didn’t know what to ex-

pect,” Heidlauf said. “She was

the cutest little spunkiest little

lady, and she just took off. I was

running to keep up with her.”

Heidlauf and the facility

staff created a small looped

course in the parking lot of

Briarwood so VanBosch could

use the bicycle.

“I figured I would be walk-

ing alongside her, but I had to

run to keep up,” Heidlauf said.

“It was a lot of fun. I was kind

of blown away by what she

did. She went around a couple

of times. She had the greatest

time and the greatest attitude.

I would take it [the trike] out

again if they asked me to.”

VanBosch said she wouldbe ready to ride it again aswell.

“I really enjoyed it. He wasthe nicest person,” VanBoschsaid of Heidlauf. “He wasstanding there, and I’m off.And then he caught up withme. He said, ‘I’m getting ex-ercise to catch up with you.’ Ikind of looked behind me, andI saw him running to catch up.I did enjoy it. It was such a bigsurprise. It certainly was anice surprise.”

VanBosch said her maidenname was Cailliau. She saidshe was the youngest of fivechildren all born at home ina house on Dean Street in St.Charles.

“When I was young, I rodean awful lot with the bicyclewith my older brother along-side me,” VanBosch said. “Notonly that, I went roller skatingat rinks and him, too. He wasgood for it for being a brother.I would also walk miles andthink nothing of it.”

BURLINGTON – It seemsnothing can slow downformer Burlington Cen-

tral golfer Matt Weber thesedays.

Weber, 18, in the midst ofa summer full of competingin tournaments and main-taining his golf game, is setto compete July 21 through23 in the 65th Illinois OpenChampionship in Glenview,in which he finished 18th lastyear. Since he was among thetop 25 finishers in the tourna-ment, Weber did not have toqualify into the tournamentthis year.

“I played pretty well,” We-ber said of his showing lastyear. “It was a good finish formy first professional event.”

In addition, he will com-pete in the 84th Illinois StateAmateur Championship atCantigny Park in WheatonJuly 15 through 17. It will beWeber’s first time compet-ing in the tournament, buthe’s familiar with Cantignybecause he used to practicethere during the winter.

Weber joined the Ameri-can Junior Golf Associationand captured his first victoryat the 2012 McArthur Toweland Sports Future Legends,at the Legend of Bristleconein Hartland, Wisconsin, a54-hole stroke play eventconducted by the AJGA. Overthe three-day tournament, the rural St. Charles residentposted scores of 69-70-73, to

capture the win over 72 othertop-tier male junior golfers inthe nation.

Returning to varsity playhis senior year at Centralafter missing his junior yearbecause of an eligibilitymisunderstanding, he helpedlead the Rockets to a fourth-place team finish in Class2A and took second overallindividually at the IHSAState Tournament. Weberhas his sights set on attend-ing Indiana University inthe fall, where he will study

business and finance as wellas play Division I golf for theprogram. Besides Indiana,Weber received offers fromNorthwestern, Illinois, NotreDame and Virginia.

“I’m really excited. I hada lot of choices, but I reallyliked [Indiana’s] coaches,”Weber said. “They have greatfacilities, and I’m lookingforward to getting there.”

With his college planssettled, Weber can point hisfull attention to his upcomingtournaments. The pressure

of the tournaments doesn’tseem to bother him, as he hasbeen playing golf since hewas 7 years old. His father,Mark Weber, would bringhim to Elgin Country Club, and it was there his love forgolf sprouted. At the age of 12,Weber began to compete intournaments through the Illi-nois Junior Golf Association.

Weber competed in theIllinois State Junior Ama-teur Championship, and hada one-stroke lead, shootinga one over par 72, heading

into the final round. Weberultimately surrendered thewin to Brendan O’Reilly, whofinished with a total score of212. Weber finished fifth at216.

Despite the tough loss, forWeber, he’s just focused on“progressing as a player,”with all his tournaments andschooling ahead.

“I’m really lookingforward to what is in storefor me at Indiana, and I amdefinitely going to miss highschool golf,” Weber said.

Cougars lose on walk-off hit in 14th inning on the roadKANE COUNTY CHRONICLE

CLINTON, Iowa – The Cou-gars won’t be returning to Ash-ford University Field againduring the regular season, butthey almost squeezed in anextra game with a lengthy ex-tra-inning matchup in Clintonon Sunday. The Cougars (12-4in second half, 57-29 overall)lost to the LumberKings (5-11,

36-48), 2-1, in 14 innings.Clinton held on to a 1-0 lead

as Jose Flores faced just oneover the minimum throughfive innings. The Cougars fi-nally tied the game with anRBI single from Shawon Dun-ston Jr. in the sixth inning. The game was tied at 1 andremained that way until the14th.

Tyler Skulina started for

the Cougars and allowed justone run on six hits throughsix innings. The Cougar right-hander didn’t walk anyoneand struck out three.

Flores was pulled in theseventh with runners at thecorners, but the Cougarsweren’t able to cash in.

Both bullpens were domi-nant after the starters’ effortsas Jen-Ho Tseng worked five

scoreless innings allowing justone hit, as he brought the gameinto extras. James Pugliese con-tributed by getting out of twoinnings with the potential win-ning run in scoring position.

Clinton finally found thescoreboard 13 innings aftertheir first run as GerardoConcepcion (1-2) gave up twowalks and a single to load thebases. Martin Peguero put

the game away with a walk-off single for the 2-1 win in thebottom of the 14th inning.

Aaron Brooks (5-2) earnedthe win after two scoreless in-nings.

DeKALB – In less than amonth, fall camp will begin, and Northern Illinois’ foot-ball season opener againstPresbyterian will be rightaround the corner.

The Huskies openpreseason practice Aug. 2.

However, workouts arestill in session throughoutthe summer as playerscondition and work out thekinks.

There’s the weightlifting, conditioning, football drills. Each Tuesday and Thursday, redshirt sophomore quarter-back Drew Hare and redshirtjunior quarterback MattMcIntosh organize 7-on-7competitions. It’s a time forthe players to get in somenice, fun reps.

For redshirt juniorcornerback Paris Loganand redshirt senior safetyDechane Durante, there’salso the duty of helping thenewcomers get acclimated.

“We’ll basically just goover any questions that thefreshmen may have,” Logansaid. “We’ll go over like ourbase coverages and stuff.”

Players are allowed toparticipate in up to eighthours of preparation duringan eight-week period eachsummer, provided they areenrolled in summer schooland meet specific academicbenchmarks.

Per a new NCAA rule, coaches are now allowedaccess to strength andconditioning, but still aren’tallowed to be involved in theon-field drills such as the7-on-7 drills.

It’s up to the players toorganize those.

NIU junior wideoutJacob Brinlee said that withsummer work not being asstructured, it allows playersto work on more individualthings.

“You have some free time, and I think it’s good becauseyou can work at your weak-

nesses and you have time towork on them,” Brinlee said.“Because you’re not busywith class and everything,so you can come in for 30minutes and do a little extra, say if someone’s lookingat [their] weaknesses. It’s

different by position and guyto guy.”

Up to two of the eighthours a week can be used forcoaches to meet with playersto study film, another rulethe NCAA passed this sum-mer.

“I think it’s really bigfor the younger guys. Theolder guys that have beenin the program, the playsthat they’re installing we’vebeen doing already. So it’sgood just to be in the swingof things so when we getto camp, we’ll be on theground running,” Brinleesaid. “Definitely big for theyounger guys, they don’tknow much. So it’ll be easyto spread it out over the sum-mer rather than when I firstgot into camp it was, learn itright now and let’s go.”

Dear Abby: I am an oph-thalmologist, and all toooften I see patients whohave already lost someof their vision becausethey waited too long toschedule an appointmentfor an eye exam.

Many times the reasonwas limited insurance orthey couldn’t afford theco-pay.

After helping nearly1.8 million people, Eye-Care America, a publicservice program of theFoundation of the Amer-ican Academy of Oph-thalmology, continues tomatch eligible seniors inneed with volunteer oph-thalmologists who pro-vide a medical eye exam– and up to one year ofcare – at no out-of-pocketcost to the patient.

This July, as we cel-ebrate our country’s in-dependence, invite yourreaders to also celebratetheir personal indepen-dence by getting regulareye exams, especially asthey age.

Many eye diseasesdevelop later in life. Infact, one in six people age65 and older has a visionimpairment that cannotbe corrected with glassesor contact lenses.

Dear Abby: My in-lawsare pressuring me to letthem take our small chil-dren for overnights andtrips around the city.

I’m extremely uncom-fortable about it becauseI don’t trust their super-vision.

They obviously lovethe kids, and I’m happythey’re in our children’slives – as long as theycome to our house tovisit.

There have been sev-eral instances in whichthey made some ques-tionable decisions withrespect to supervisingmy little ones in public.

I have so far suc-cessfully dodged theirrequests, but it will beimpossible to do it for-ever.

If I tell them how I –and their son – feel, theywill be hurt, especiallybecause my parentsroutinely watch the kidsoutside our home.

What’s the best way tohandle this with the leasthurt feelings? – St. LouisMommy

Dear Mommy: This issomething you and yourhusband will have todiscuss with his parentsTOGETHER. If you do italone, you will foreverbe blamed for “favoring”your family over his.

When the discussionhappens, you should citeyour reasons for feelingthe way you do.

I can’t promise therewon’t be hurt feelings, because there probablyalready are, but yourchildren’s safety mustcome first.

How do you getall of your tricks?

Zig Ziglar, a writer, salesmanand motivational speaker whodied in 2012, said, “You wereborn to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare towin, and expect to win.”

To succeed in a bridge dealmay require taking a winner atthe right moment. A trick toosoon or too late may prove fatal.

In today’s deal, South is infour spades. West leads the clubqueen. What should declarer do?

In the auction, South prob-ably should have rebid threeno-trump. With eight winners,he needed partner to provideonly one more trick, or for theopening lead to be a low heartaway from the ace.

Declarer apparently hasthese 10 tricks: six spades, oneheart, two diamonds and oneclub. However, to get that hearttrick, South has to lead his kingto drive out the ace, then get tothe dummy to cash the queen. And apparently the only dummyentry, the club ace, has beenremoved by West’s opening lead.Well, if a heart trick is impossi-ble, maybe South’s 10th trick canbe a club ruff in dummy.

Some players would take thefirst trick and return a club, butthe defender who won that trickwould surely shift to a trump tostop declarer’s club ruff.

Instead, suppose West isallowed to take trick one. Whatwill he do next?

If he leads a trump, Southwins, draws trumps, and leadsthe heart king to establish dum-my’s queen, with the club acestill on the board. If West con-tinues clubs, then declarer canruff a club on the board for therequired extra winner. Perfect!
