HEY DIV ISION 1B! Have you ever been bullied?

If you have, don’t be embarrassed. Bullying is something that,

unfortunately, everyone experiences at some point in their life. During

the week of March 18th-23rd, the District Programs Committee is

leading a Day of Silence in honor of the lives that have been lost as

casualties of bullying (see flyer page 8).

The service year is concluding in roughly three weeks, but by no

means does that mean a peaceful three weeks. I hope you’re ready

to end the year with a bang! We’ve got events lined up back-to-

back, so take note of the important dates on page 3.

March 15th: Annual Achievement Report Form and all pre-judged

contests must be postmarked by this date.

April 5th-7th: District Convention! Check out

issuu.com/kellytran/docs/nj_d1b_news_dcon07_kt for a little on what

to expect.

Also, please take note that there will be a PCM

following the Bowling for Babies fundraiser!

All the best until then,

Who’s that…?

Hey fellow Key Clubbers,

My name is Cynthia Thurairajah

and I have been elected as

2013-2014 LTG-elect of Division

1B. I’m from Egg Harbor Twp

High School and I am currently

serving as the Recording Secre-

tary and previously served as a

committee chair for Interna-

tional Partners. I’m very excited

to be part of a board filled with

amazing new and current offi-

cers as well as LTGs. My plans

for the next service year in-

clude improvement of commu-

nication within the division and

promoting new Builders Clubs

and K-Kids. Passion for service

starts young and I think by

working together we can in-

crease the membership of

clubs as well as the overall

dedication from members. I

look forward to meeting all of

you and serving our community

together.

When I first asked my brother to

attend the meeting, I thought he

would be reluctant because he usu-

ally was about these things. I was sur-

prised when he agreed and even

asked if he should dress up for it. He

wasn’t the only sibling to attend this

meeting; middle schoolers Kenny

Nguyen, Gobi Thurairajah, and Ray-

mond Chau were also there. When we

were there, they all seemed uninter-

ested and bored; I was worried that

they would later on complain to their

parents that their time was wasted. I

think all of us were surprised when they

started to discuss among themselves

after the elections. They actually got

pretty into it and debated who would

get their vote if they could. Curtis told

me afterwards that it was really infor-

mative and he wished he could’ve

been involved during elections. Some-

thing in my head told me that this was

the spark that ignited his passion for

service and leadership.

In a way, Curtis had always been

a Key Clubber at heart. I never had to

try and convince him to go to a pro-

ject with me; he always agreed to. I

think he might have more service

hours than some members in Key Club.

That’s the main reason why I wasn’t

particularly shocked when he was in-

terested in starting a Builders Club in

his school. He immediately jumped on

the idea. After the meeting, he went

on the Builders Club website and re-

searched the ways he could recruit

members and charter a club. It’s great

seeing my own little brother share the

same passion as I do.

This just proves that servant lead-

ership and community service can

start at a young age. You don’t need

to be in Key Club or Interact to be in-

terested in these things. As long as

something ignites the fire, you can find

a young but strong leader that’s willing

to step up and start something amaz-

ing. It’s essentially the same as sports—

they can start young. I know all-star

soccer players that started when they

were in kindergarten. Why can’t it be

the same for something like Key Club

or Builders Club? The earlier they’re in-

volved, the more they and the com-

munity will benefit from it.

So, if you have a

little sibling, cousin,

or just anyone,

get them in-

volved in the

Kiwanis Fam-

ily—it will liter-

ally change a

life, or two, or

two thousand.

starts with your family. On Saturday, January 19, I went

to Division 1B's LTG elections and PCM.

After attending, I was inspired to start a

Builders Club at the Alder Avenue Mid-

dle School since it was taken out years

ago due to a severe budget cut.

The reason why I want to start this

club is because it helps students be-

come aware of the things happening

around them. It also encourages stu-

dents to work together to create new

ideas, reach more goals, help the

home, school, and community, and in-

spire younger students to lead. This is a

great time to start early for the students

that want to join Key Club when they

get to high school. Starting early

makes you more prepared for what

the future holds. Like sports, Builders

Club can help students become

passionate about service at an

earlier age along with gaining

leadership skills.

What inspired me is how

close all these students

were. When the candi-

dates were reciting their

speeches and an-

swering questions, I

noticed some-

thing: they were

all inspired by

the same thing I

was. They were

motivated by see-

ing all the team-

work, the dedication, working hand in

hand, and they are always looking af-

ter one another. Starting a Builders

Club in middle school would be a

great deal for many students. It will

help students be ready for the things

that life will throw at them. Starting this

club can allow us to do all these amaz-

ing things with a little bit of teamwork

and dedication. Why wait until high

school when we can start now? Any-

one can make a difference.
