Typical questions about joining the ClubThe many emails/calls we receive enquiring about what is involvedin joining the club. Some usual questions are:- Can we teach? No. we can't, we are not allowed to. But weshare a great lot of experience with fellow members.- Are there female members? Sure are – we have plenty. Age,gender, occupations and team preferences are of no issue with'Woodies'. We're just crazy about wood!2015 count we had 25 fine female members out of the overall 200at the club. We've seen a 50% increase in recent years of femalemembers, when overall growth was 25%. - What age groups come? Well, our Secretary has worked outsome nice statistics on that. 29% are aged 45-65, 43% are 65-85.We have some younger, and older! So there's a wealth ofenthusiasm, and experience here! - How do I find out about what the club is like? Drop in on ameeting night (1st WED of the month 7:15PM) or when the club isopen, We love showing visitors how to become members! ReferNEWSLETTER last page for open times, and links to activities.- How much does it cost Latest Joining fee/membership fees are on website. Presently(2019-20) $100 pa (due 1st Sept to vote at AGM), with 50%discount after 1st March if a new member, PLUS a one time $50joining fee. Late fee of $10 applies after 31st Oct, and failing torenew by 30th Nov requires another Joining Fee of $50 to be paid.- When do we meet? Refer to the last page of latest newsletters to see the times theclub is open for all the activity groups. But members are alsowelcome to use the workshops whenever there are two or morekeyholders/competent machine user attendees (for safetyreasons), to undertake their own projects, but courtesy suggeststhat priority is given to the activity groups on 'their sessions', toallow them to progress Club works. - History and Activities (See October 2018 Newsletter summary)

SAFETY Corner

Knox “Woodies” SAFETY CORNER

The RIPPLE EFFECT It is just over a year since becomingthe main contributor to SafetyCorner, our monthly newsletterfeature. Readers will surely have noticed my references to

a list of “Top-10” safety tipsI adopted early on. Lookingback, this was a smart way tobegin because I had the next10 months subject matteralready planned! Each month,Mr Google has been myconstant companion for a likelylogo or icon. When I found thisone, I was reminded of a retiredfriend of mine who was a seniorPolice Forensic IncidentInvestigator.

He is still a passionate speaker for the Police academy ontraining days, such is his experience investigating a numberof major tragedies. I am sure you would remember somefrom all that printer’s ink splashed across the front pages ofthe newspapers. He and I often find ourselves together insocial situations. I see his passion overflow as he tellsothers in the group about incidents he has investigated inhis career; many I have heard before. It is not long before apoor unfortunate person will refer to a particular “accident’.Well …. Boy, does that excite him a little more. Using hisbest Police Academy voice, he bellows “Let me assure you, there are no accidents because there is always a cause. They are incidents. We didn’t investigate accidents, weinvestigate incidents.

For all his passion andbluster, he has told meprivately about thepersonal impact on himselfand other forgotten victimswho must live on long afterbeing declared un-newsworthy. They don’tmake the front pages; theyare the families and friendsof the persons killed orpermanently injured. Mypassionate friend calls this'the Ripple Effect.'

So I leave you with a sobering thought. You owe it to yourfamily, to your friends, to investigators, to health workersand to community services to guard against being the causeof A RIPPLE EFFECT.

Workshop Notes - “members helping members”

Phil Spencer provides inspiring technical articles for thisregular TECHNICAL column.

So, what's your project presently? Drop a line withpictures to the Club via [email protected] toinclude in the Newsletter to share your experiences.

For this month's edition of “Ingrained”, we're looking at allthe unique and special equipment that the KDWCClubrooms have for members to use. For anyone who hasa need to use unfamiliar tools, the opportunity of workingalongside other more skilled members on a Club project, isa great way to overcome apprehensions of tackling newprojects with new equipment.

Kidz Korner (each Tuesday morning) and the Toy/GiftsGroup (each Thursday morning) are just two examples ofhow members can meet with others, and get to know what'savailable in the Club workshops.

This approach is particularly beneficial to newcomers to theClub, as it allows them to break the ice meeting othermembers, and getting used to the Club's facilities. Thismonth's article shows how a member who's been herenearly 30 years equally gained a terrific insight to newexperiences! ....[Phil]

Kidz Korner helped gain confidence on Club Equipment

This month is a visit to the Clubrooms for a change, andshows how the newsletter Editor, Gary, got to use lots ofequipment for the first time, despite being a member fornearly 30 years!

True, all those years of just using one's own equipment atthe man-cave at home, before retirement, and notfrequenting the Club much during the daytime, suddenlychanged when joining with Kidz Korner activities to workon all manner of wooden kits.

What transpired, was the opportunity to use equipment forthe first time.

Now this opens up a whole bunch of benefits.

• Safety awareness with new tools• Familiarity with new functions that tools can do• Repetitive production helps refine skills• Meeting Members already conversant with tools• Gaining confidence in the use of new machines• Learning how to use jigs, shortcuts, techniques

by following the lead of more experienced members• Making worthwhile products for the Club • Everyone's a winner!• And what's more, the opportunity to consider

whether some special tools are worth personalinvestment for the home workshop, and which ones

• Making new friends/contacts at the Club• Help out with KK workshops to witness first hand

the fruits of your labour. • Also enables short comings to be discovered and

corrected on the kits.

Kidz Korner helped gain confidence on Club Equipment

In past months the INGRAINED has covered projects thatMember's get up to when away from the Club, in their ownsheds, to share experiences and knowhow with othermembers. What emerged from those interviews, was anawareness of what machines Members had at their ownworkshops, versus the other machines they needed, which were available for use at the KDWC's workshop.

Big ticket, larger machines or machines needed rarely, thatthe Club has, makes it very handy for members to share, rather than having to buy their own. Examples:

• Spider saw for docking long lengths of timber• Variety of band saws ranging in use for large jobs

or tight turns• jointers / planers• wide 24” drum sander• wide 24” thicknesser• variety of woodturning lathes• large sheet panel saw (say: cutting 2400x1200)• heavy duty docking saws for complex/mitre angles

The above is just a selection that pop to mind. They arelarge, expensive machines, and often, members simplydon't have the space to accommodate owning one at home.

Familiarity and Safety

When tackling a one-off personal project that needs these rarer machines, then the question becomes: “Can I use the machine safely, without damaging my rare project?”

This is where some rehearsal and practice comes into play.Kidz Korner is the ideal solution, because there are manydifferent machines needed to make all the components. And making lots of them, like drilling out wheels for racingcars and tractors, or using bandsaws for bodies for thetrucks, gives a Member the chance to make a few cuttingmistakes, and practice, repeat, practice until perfected.Sure a few wasted parts, but in the end, confidence andquality will be achieved.

The Club, under its Constitution is not allowed toprovide teaching Services to the public (or Members). But sharing knowledge and allowing Members to learnby observation and discussion, is a way to learn.Remember, other Members are at the Club to do theirprojects, not teach, so nobody should be trying to tieup the time of other Members.

Last month, in the article on 'Carvers', it became veryapparent that Carvers have very modest tool requirements(in terms of the storage needed for them). That is, incomparison to furniture making which deals with manytools and large machines, and all the storage needed for avastly different size hobby so to speak. Well that was theobservation in that article.

When such Carvers need the occasional use of the largermachines mentioned above, that's where the Club'sfacilities play a really useful, beneficial role for Members.

But be sure to take CARE of the machines, and notabuse them. If in doubt, ASK first, and adjust later.

Kidz Korner helped gain confidence on Club Equipment

What skills do you see as important to have?

For Kidz Korner – there's ALWAYS something to do – evenif it is just bagging up thecomponents ready for sale. Thecomaraderie of chatting with likeminded 'Woodies', opens updiscussion on how the kits aremade, what tools, jigs, templatesand machines were deployed, and all this is a great learningexperience. Years of refinementand trialling have gone into theefficiencies and tricks needed tomake some components. Andknowledge like that can be usedon future personal projects tobetter understand ways aroundwhat might otherwise be a trickysituation to work out.

Such discussions often lead to these questions:• How was that made?• What tool bit, jig template helped achieve that?• Where do you get drill bits, parts, like that from?• Why was that thickness of timber used for that?• ….. sometimes we can have too many questions!

The point is, the more you discuss and share commoninterest information like this, the more successful eachMember is, at making their own projects over time.

So, the only real skill needed, is to be PATIENT and beprepared to LISTEN and OBSERVE what someone withgreater knowledge can share with you. And then put in!

Frank Collins was watching Gary cutting some wood thehard way, and took time to illustrate a sled he made. Here's

the nifty SLED for atable saw, invented byFrank Collins. Usingslides that fit into longslots/grooves either sideof the blade, the sledmoves very accuratelyand parallel, so that youcan trust a 90 degree cutto timber held SAFELYand solidly within thesled, by PUSH STICKS.

What a top idea to makeand retrofit to any tablesaw at home. Frankmade his to bring to theClub saw!

PLUS, it allows otherangled jigs to beclamped inside the sledfor cutting really trickyangles on a table saw.

See photo (right) on the grooves that could hold such a SLED on the home machine!

Kidz Korner helped gain confidence on Club Equipment

What equipment/resources at the Club do you learn?

Making Wheels

It was a surprise to learn that wheels were NOT made on alathe, and NOT by a hole saw. In fact, wheels are madewith a purpose built FORSTNER BIT with a special extracutter in the hollow upper section of the bit. And the bit hasa standard drill in the centre. So using a drill press, in onesingle action, an axle hole can be made, a recess like ahub-cap is achieved (for subsequent recess for a screw andwasher) and the outer wheel is cut. 2nd photo below showsa box full of results! Local company: JALOR TOOLSmade it per Club's specs. PH: 03-9763 1377 Knoxfiled, VIC.http://www.jalortools.com.au/

Drilling holes accurately

Holding an unusual shaped job todrill specially located holes can bea problem. But not if you make aJIG. For instance, drilling theholes needed to hold arms andlegs to a teddy bear, with the bodybeing thin and rounded, needs tobe held in a jig so the drill pressmakes a short job of it! ANDSAFELY DONE!

Left: TIP: Sanding all the wheelstogether makes them the sameand saves time. Using a Phillipsscrewdriver, but with a hollowwooden roller at the 'rubbing end'to avoid the heat/friction meltingthe screw driver. Makes shortwork on the BELT SANDER!Another top idea from the Woodiesat KK. Thanks Peter Wakefield!

Right: A home-madeSLED for a table saw willadd more life to this oldtable saw at homeinstead of that singleprotractor slide on theright slot slown in thephoto.

It's been so hard all theseyears cutting really long(sideways) pieces oftimber and holding themon a small, single, protractor edge to make a90-degree slice thru thejobs.

Thanks to Frank's idea!

Marking up jobs from a MASTER template

So, lots of the same 'truck' needs to be cut out from somesuitable wood. Lots of things to consider.

• Making efficient use of scarce timber• Avoiding knot holes and blemishes• Making sure the BAND SAW will be able to cut

through and if needed, escape without backing up.IE: allow for a straight cut exit everywhere….

Example of efficientlycutting out 4 'truck'bodies in such a way, that the bandsaw canbe used withoutbacking up around abend.

See the 90-degree cutthat is needed for theback of each 'truck'.(middle of photo)

They may be easier tocut, if the bandsaw canenter a straight cutfrom the side. But theblade needs to exitsomewhere first, tomake that 2nd cut fromthe side.

Kidz Korner helped gain confidence on Club Equipment

Working with Members & Machines inspires home projects

Having enjoyed the opportunity to try a hand at using aBandsaw, has now lead to exploring opportunities withsome equipment at home, long been left idle.

It was just a matter of seeingthe potential of what a toolcan do, when using it in aninnovative or perhaps justsimply, a more educatedway at last!

Scroll saws, bandsaws, jigsaws and the various wayseach of those machines cantackle a given job in aparticular way, has nowprompted the restoration ofan 80 year old jigsaw athome.

Who knows?

Kidz Korner kitsmight be made onthis beast in thefuture, for the Club!

Thicknessers versus Sanders

A brilliant piece of advice arose from an interview withMember: Harry Deschepper in the JULY 2019 edition of'Ingrained'. Harry said:

….“Don't ever SAND things to reduce in size! Only sand things to make them nice and smooth.” ...

And so, to the properuse of a thicknesser toCUT (not sand) a pieceof wood down to theright dimension. Lateron, it can be sanded fora nice finish on a beltsander or drumsander

(Left:) Here's long timeMember, LindsayHorsley showing the24” THICKNESSER torecent new memberFrances Henderson.

Cleaning up sandpapers (and belts and discs)

Here's Frank using thescrewdriver and wooden holder tosand down a nice finish on abunch of wheels, in action.NOTE: The roller is at the front (on left photo) is CORRECT.Whereas the photo below isINCORRECT (wearing out thescrewdriver handle)

The machine is a combinationbelt sander and disc sanderon the side. The discsander is beaut for makingrounded edges on wood, whilst the belt sander withits rolling flat surface, allowsfor the wheels example tospin/rotate and get theentire circumferance of thejob done in a singlesession.

But let's discuss another interesting TIP for sanding. Onanother day, some wood with a degree of gumimpregnation was attempted with the same belt sander, and alas, the gum quickly clogged the sandpaper.

Now, ideally, it would have been better not to use themachine, and avoid the contamination. But if accidentshappen, there is a cleaning solution, and it is important todeploy, otherwise, the next Member will attempt sanding, and all that gum will displace all over their fine specimen! Not good for public relations! (Nor the timber!).

These are expensive, so some people try ideas like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv5xWkoxXz0

TIP: But a rubber stick is the real answer, and the Clubhas these, but Members should use them sparingly.

There's plenty on the market:https://www.google.com/search?q=sandpaper+rubber+cleaner&tbm=isch&source=univ&client=firefox-b-ab&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi1-7fuzqfkAhUFdCsKHav-DF4QsAR6BAgIEAE&biw=1668&bih=777

Some other useful machines at the Club

SPIDER SAW.

It is the opposite to a table saw where the saw is in a fixedposition and the operator moves the job. On the SPIDERSAW, the job sits steady on a really large, useful bench, and the saw is moved across the job to make the cut. Inthis case it is pulled towards the operator to make the cut. This machine is ideal for docking off pieces from really longsticks of wood. Recently for Kidz Korner, a number ofpieces were needed for making pencil cases. Really longlengths (like 4Mtrs) of slender timber needed lots and lots of300mm long pieces cut up. It was a simple matter of usinga G-Clamp to hold a STOP-PIECE on the right side of thesaw blade, 300mm away, and then feeding the long lengthof timber in to that STOP, pulling the SPIDER SAW overthe job to dock a piece off, and then repeating themovement over and over till the 4Mtr piece was finished.

EASY and SAFE, when using head shields and ear muffs

BANDSAWS

SAFETY FIRST!

The club has a number ofbandsaws and there is onereally important rule!

Never cut a round log on a bandsaw.

You simply cannot allow abandsaw blade to cock orjamb in an piece of wood thatis not flat and solidly placed onthe bed.

So take heed of all theWARNING SIGNS onequipment

What wood/glues/finishes have been discovered?

With the series of interviews in last 9 months, there hasbeen a real good highlight on products that seem to be ineverybody's shed. Now it's more than likely if all 183members were interviewed, there would be even moreproducts, but whilst the pot is hot, perhaps a summary herewill be a good start to help those who need a head startnow.

Glues

Seems that one name: TITEBOND just keeps coming up!Every Member seems to tell a slightly different tale aboutthis glue, but it is probably due to two things:

- whether they use it inside or out, or for potentially water ingress situations or not - how good a deal they got it for! (multiple sizes from 237ml thru 3.785Lt even up to 19Lt)

Anyway, a short list of some of theClub's favourite suppliers, offer thisproduct at various prices from time totime. So give one of them close toyou, a call to see what's happening.

Finishes

from Feasts Weston (See July 2019 Newsletter)https://www.feastwatson.com.au/

A really popular one, is MASTERTOUCH Wipe-On Poly

and their Satin WAX: Mastertouch Carnauba Wax

And from Organoil, for a nice finish, also consider Tung Oilwith a combination of Citrus Terpene 50/50 especiially forthe first coat. (see Aug 2019 newsletter)

Happenings around the Clubrooms…..

some trivia…..

Everybody knows the terrific carving that Albert Bak does, but this photo has a striking resemblance to one of hisworks….

Sprung!

Spotted in Palm Cove by Hurtle Lupton in early August.Hurtle ran into Charles Bruckner on holiday up in the area!Small world, hey? You can't hide from Woodies – they'reeverywhere! Hope you're both enjoying a break fromMelbourne's near zero temperatures this month.

Sharpening advice

Please: Don't change any club chisels to a different angle. Gouges are gouges – they are NOT scrapers! The club recently acquired a beautiful new 3/4” sizedgouge, and someone has foolishly and excessively used agrinder to put something like a crazy 80-degree scrapingangle on it. In fact, scrapers don't even go to such anextreme angle. It has taken years of life out of thisotherwise nice tool. What's even more of a concern, isthere are perfectly good scrapers on the same rack next tothe gouges! Someone needs to lift their game!

There are tons of instructions/help on such matters:

Attention all CARVERS! CARVE-IN 2019 5 th /6 th OCT 9:00AM Templestowe VIC

At Woodcraft Manningham we have about 40 members whoare woodcarvers. Every year we conduct two weekendevents which combine carving with social activity - one, heldin May, which is a full residential weekend in the country, and our October carve-in held at our club room inTemplestowe, on the first weekend in October, after theGrand Final weekend.

The October Carve-in covers all of Saturday, and goes untiljust after lunch on Sunday. There is an optional groupdinner at a local pub on the Saturday evening, and peoplethen return home and come back in on Sunday morning. Inaddition to our Club members, we extend invitations to anumber of other clubs in Melbourne and regional Victoria -the out-of-towners usually stay in a cabin at a nearbycaravan park.

The event is very social, with as much yakking, gawking, eating and drinking as actual carving. Because so manyturn up (30 - 35) we actually hire the YMCA hall next door, and use our own little clubroom for the handful of powercarvers. Everyone brings their own project and tools, andsome people bring their own little workbench to help usstretch our bench equipment. There are people there whoare very experienced and sympathetic carvers, who arewilling to lend a hand to anyone who turns up needing a bitof advice or guidance.

We extend an invitation to carvers in your Club, or to othercarvers that you might know of. It's first-come, first-served, so it is advisable to make a commitment promptly. Ienclose an application form, and would be grateful if youcould forward it to others who might be interested.

PLACES ARE LIMITED so contact ASAP. This would havenormally had a cutoff date of 31st August, but extended aweek. Email Melvyn for application form. (Gaz has copy )

HUMOR

What's in the box (in the main Workshop)

There's no prize for this at all…. Just the GLORY of being theMember that actually knows what's in this box after 20 years!

It's been sitting above the drill press for 'Yonks' (I think that's a long time + 5 more years)….

Without peeking, can anybody guess what this is? Maybewe should haul it down next Member's meeting night and seeif it needs feeding or something….
