Burdin is staff scientist at ASLC and UAF
and a member of the IUCN/SSC Cetacean Specialist Group. He started his
marine mammal research in 1979 on sea otters in the Commander Islands.
Since 1995, he originated and led the investigation into large endangered
whales in the Russian Far East seas: bowhead whales in the Sea of
Okhotsk, the western population of gray whales near the Sakhalin coast,
and humpback whales in the western Bering Sea. Author and co-author of
about 90 scientific publications, Alexander Burdin has worked since 1999
with Erich Hoyt as co-director and originator of the Far East Russia
Orca Project (FEROP).

Начал свою научную деятельность в 1979 году на Командорских
островах с изучения командорской популяции каланов. С 1995 года
является одним из организаторов изучения краснокнижных видов
крупных китообразных в дальневосточных морях России: гренландских
китов в Охотском море, серых китов западной популяции на острове
Сахалин, горбачей в западной части Берингова моря. Автор и соавтор
более 90 научных публикаций.
С 1999 года, как и Эрих Хойт, создатель и
ко-директор проекта по изучению косатки в
дальневосточных морях России (FEROP).

founder. He started to study killer whales in 1973 off northern Vancouver
Island, returning for some ten years, writing articles for National Geographic,
Defenders and a popular book, Orca: The Whale Called Killer (Hoyt, 1990).
In the early 1990s, he researched and wrote an investigative report on
captive orcas and the aquarium trade, called The Performing Orca for WDCS,
then a young conservation, campaign and research organization with a
special interest in orcas. Erich Hoyt is one of the world’s leading experts
on marine protected areas, ecotourism and whale watching.
HAL SATO
Experienced photo-ID researcher of rorquals and
orcas in Japanese waters, Hal Sato is FEROP’s
principal investigator and co-founder. She helped initiate
photo-ID work on Bryde’s whales from Shikoku Island
and on minke and killer whales in Hokkaido. Hal Sato
has researched and written many papers and articles
and translated reports and books into Japanese. Her
current research focuses on the social structure of killer whales in the
western North Pacific. She also works as a whale watch guide and operator
in Nemuro Strait, Hokkaido.

косаток в японских водах, Хэл Сато – исследователь и
один из создателей проекта FEROP.
Ей принадлежит инициатива проведения работ по
фотоидентификации полосатиков Брайда возле острова Сикику, малых
полосатиков и косаток на о. Хоккайдо. Хэл Сато написала много статей
и перевела большое количество научных публикаций и книг на японский
язык. Ее интерес в настоящее время направлен на изучение социальной
структуры косаток в западной части Тихого океана. Она также работает

DR. OLGA FILATOVA
Research associate at the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, Faculty
of Biology, at Moscow State University, Olga Filatova has taken part in
FEROP since 2000. She started to study orca
acoustic communication as a student at Moscow
State University and, following her identification
of killer whale dialects in the western North
Pacific, obtained her PhD through the project in
2005. Her scientific interests now extend to
acoustic communication in mammals. In FEROP
she manages the research into the vocal repertoire and dialects of killer
whales in the RFE.

Принимает участие в проекте по изучению косатки в
дальневосточных морях России (FEROP) с 2000 года. Начала
изучать звуковую коммуникацию косаток еще будучи
студентом и аспирантом МГУ, и в 2005 году защитила
кандидатскую дисертацию. Область научных интересов - звуковая
коммуникация млекопитающих. В настоящем проекте руководит
изучением вокального репертуара и диалектов косаток в морях
Дальнего Востока России.
