Mission Statement Kearns Spirituality Center invites people of all faiths searching for a deeper meaning in their lives to experience an environment dedicated to the renewal and revitalization of the human spirit. A Catholic retreat center sponsored by the Sister of Divine Providence, Kearns Spirituality Center shares in the mission of the Congregation “to make God’s Providence more visible in our world.”

THEME: “Open our Hearts to New Life”

Dear Friends of Kearns:

Our Provident God be with you and yours, especially in this month of Thanksgiving. This year

we have chosen as our theme “Open our Hearts to New Life.” The year 2015-2016, the focus

of this Report, has been another year of Grace for our ministry here at Kearns. As can be seen in

our Center Usage chart we have another year of increased participation in terms of both hosted

and program/retreat participants. As a result of this increase in usage, we also show an increase

in income. New groups are addressing vital societal needs in terms of healing and wellness as

well as a variety of meditation and retreat methods. Examples include Yoga, Tai Chi Qigong,

Integrated Relaxation, Centering Prayer, 12 Step Spirituality and the Christian Perspective, etc.,

to mention just a few.

Two highlights this year involved our friends and neighbors in a very special way. First,

Members of the Pittsburgh Symphony sought us out for a benefit Christmas Concert featuring

the “Baroque Christmas Concerti” and the “Recorder Suite in A Minor.” The evening was

unique in providing the opportunity to view these great artists at close range in our Chapel and to

interact with them at the reception which followed. Secondly, the UPMC Passavant Foundation

renewed their grant for $10,000 toward the Comfort and Hospitality Program. This renewal

indicated their satisfaction with the program as well as with Peggy Huwe’s detailed financial

reporting.

The Association of Pittsburgh Priests increased their number of lectures offered at Kearns from

three to five, including such well known speakers as Sr. Ilia Delio OSF, popular author and

lecturer from Washington Theological Union and Josh McElwee, NCR’s Roman reporter.

While our wonderful staff members have remained the same, we have had an increase in

volunteers. Kearns has also inaugurated an annual dinner for volunteers, which focuses on

getting to know one another and on their marvelous annual service contribution to the mission

and the patrons.

As a result of the closure of Providence Villa, the Kearns staff has placed emphasis on

hospitality to those persons and groups who were serviced by the Villa in prior years. We have

offered tours, hospitality, and the possibilities for programs or individual retreats, spiritual

direction etc. to those who have come to join us. They have also been added to our growing

mailing list.

In all of the above mentioned ways we have opened our hearts to new life and an expanding

vision of the mission of making Providence more visible here at Kearns during the past year.

Sincerely in God’s Providence,

Sister Agnes Raible CDP Director

PROGRAMS/RETREATS/SERVICES

Page 5

Programs The theme which we have chosen, focusing on opening our hearts to new life applies to the program area in very specific ways. First of all, those who attend our programs are often searching for new life in varied ways which relate to their own or group growth in spirituality. Secondly, they are willing to open their hearts to God and to others because the welcoming staff, speakers, topics and environment encourage this. Also, the new life in the Catholic Church with the impact of Pope Francis has encouraged this. The APP’s speakers, e.g. Daniel Scheid on “Laudato Si”, Josh McElwee’s address on expectations regarding the Synod on Family and the Book Discussion’s choice of Francis of Rome , Francis of Assisi: A New Springtime for the Church by Leonardo Boff have opened the hearts of all of us to further spiritual growth. The most direct thematic application, however, was Doris Klein CSA’s fall retreat actually entitled, “Open Our Hearts: The Ebb and Flow of Mystery and Grace in the Seasons of our Lives”. All of our programs, however, contributed to this being a year in which we were constantly blessed by our Provident God as daily we opened our hearts to new life. Also, we are deeply indebted to the Program Committee for their help and especially to David Lavender for his very attractive graphics and layout work on our brochures.
