Recycle Irvington! All yard waste is to be dropped off at 406 coit street Monday - Friday durning the hours of 8am-3pm. Please note: Garbage, soil, rocks or other debris should not be placed in this brown bag. 150:3 G Leaf Recycling Effective January 1, 2008 leaves will no longer be raked, blown or piled on any Township road. All residents/property owners of houses, multi-unit dwellings including apartment buildings will place leaves and yard waste(i.e. clippings from grass, bushes) in recyclable paper bags. During Leaf Season from September 1st through December 31st, leaves in recyclable paper bags will be put out for collection after 6p.m. the day before street cleaning. The Board of Education and the Housing Authority shall also bag their leaves into brown recyclable paper bags and dispose of them with their own personnel and transportation and deposit their leaves at a place designated by the Director of Public Works. Prunings Branches Leaves Brush Flowers Weeds Grass Leaves Leaf Season During leaf season, September 1st - December 31st, bags will be picked up at the curbside on Street Cleaning days. Both Street Sweeping sides will be picked up twice a week. Example: if your street sweeping is done on one side on Mondays, you may also put your leaves out for Thursday Street Sweeping. ONLY PUT LEAVES INSIDE OF THE RECYCLABLE BROWN PAPER BAGS. THIS IS ONLY DURING THE LEAF SEASON. IF LEAVES ARE IN PILES, SUMMONSES WILL BE ISSUED Please note: During leaf season branches, prunings and other yard waste are not to be mixed with the leaves. Spring & Summer Fall & Winter Throughout the Year Throughout the year you may bring leaves and yard waste to 406 Coit Street. Monday - Friday during the hours of 8am - 3pm Please note: During leaf season branches, prunings and other yard waste are not to be mixed with the leaves . Garbage, soil, rocks or other debris should not be placed in this brown bag. Sewer Backups What causes them? The majority of sewer backup, in either the lateral line or main sewer line are caused by the improper disposal of grease, sanitary napkins, cloth napkins, food waste being disposed down the toilet or sink. When these items clog the main sewer line the waste backs up through your lateral lines into your basement, usually through an improperly sealed cleanout or through a shower, sink or toilet in the basement. What do I do if I have a sewer backup occur? If a sewer backup occurs during normal work hours 9:00 am to 4:00pm contact the Department of Public Works at 973-399-6690. If one occurs after normal work hours please contact the Irvington Police Department 973-399-6602. How can the Township assist me? When a sewer backup is reported to us, the Department of Public Works dispatches men specially trained and equipment designed to eliminate the blockage. The average response time is less than two hours. A truck with high pressure hoses and specially designed nozzles is sent to the location and the hoses are introduced into the clogged line. The hose and nozzles is sent under high pressure into the blockage, forcing the line open. When grease buildup is the cause of the blockage, special chemicals are used to dissolve the material. This is the only effective way of eliminating a sewer blockage. Why does the waste end up in the basements: When the main sewer line is backed up the waste generated in your home either stays in the line or looks for a weak spot (i.e. toilet or shower in the basement or an improperly tighten sewer cleanout). Because, the only way to eliminate a sewer backup is to use equipment that operates under high pressure; an improperly tighten sewer cleanout cap can pop off causing water and waste to pour into a basement. How can this be prevented? Since the Township is obligated to respond to a sewer backup and since the use of high pressure is the only efficient method of dealing with a blocked sewer, it is up to the property owner to make sure that he/ she has done everything to prevent or minimize the effects of a sewer backup. The property owner should make sure that the cap on the sewer cleanout is tightening properly. The property owner should also look into installing a “BACKFLOW PREVENTER” – this is a one way valve, that we recommend be installed by a licensed plumber. The one way valve allows waste and water to flow OUT into the main sewer line and does not allow material to flow back through the line into your basement. Dear Neighbor, It is our pleasure along with the Irvington Township Council, to provide you with the new regular garbage and recycling schedule for 2015. We ask you to join me in our town-wide garbage and recycling effort to give new life to household waste that would otherwise be added to landfills or incinerators. The Department of Public Works mission is to design, build, operate and maintain the Township’s public facilities and infrastructure in a manner that is safe, sustainable, economical and attractive. However, your commitment is important. We encourage you to join our “Keep Irvington Clean” initiative –If you see it PICK IT UP—If you see it CLEAN IT UP—If you love it DON’T MESS IT UP. Let’s all work together to create a greener Irvington and show our community pride. The more we clean and recycle, the more money we save for other community programs, such as road repair, park maintenance and special events for you and your family. If for any reason you are unsure of your garbage collection or recycling schedule day, our dedicated staff at the Department of Public Works can assist you by calling (973) 399-6690. Join us as Irvington renews its commitment in 2015 to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. As always, our best wishes to you. On behalf of my Administration, I am pleased to present the 2014-

2015 Recycling Calendar.

This is one informational brochure that should be kept as a reference

guide and carried out till the end of 2015.

This year, we are returning to our full color recycling brochures as we

introduce our new curbside recycling program.

Now, bottles, tin cans and aluminum, newspaper, cardboard, paper,

books, magazines, junk mail gets placed out for recycling on the

same day. Your recycling day has not changed; we just made the

process easier. The rules have remained the same; household trash

and recycling materials are not to be mixed.

The Department of Neighborhood Services mission is to utilize

the 3”E” Equation: Education + Enforcement=Effectiveness to bring about a philosophy of

“accountability” within our community; furthermore to address residents concerns and thus

improve their quality of life.

There are also new enforcement efforts underway which will address the commercial, industrial

and multi-unit sectors compliance of Township wide recycling procedures.

You may obtain additional information throughout the recycling calendar; as well as by telephone,

our website, cable television, and clean community events. Our enforcement team will hold those

who refuse to cooperate accountable.

With all of us adhering to all of the rules and regulations; we can expect the benefits of an

aesthetic community becoming evident town wide. We must work together to make a difference

and Make Irvington a Cleaner Community.

Sincerely yours,

Wayne Smith, Mayor

Sewer BackupsWhat causes them? The majority of sewer backup, in either the lateral line or main

sewer line are caused by the improper disposal of grease,

sanitary napkins, cloth napkins, food waste being disposed

down the toilet or sink. When these items clog the main sewer

line the waste backs up through your lateral lines into your

basement, usually through an improperly sealed cleanout or

through a shower, sink or toilet in the basement.

What do I do if I have a sewer backup occur? If a sewer backup occurs during normal work hours 9:00 am to 4:00pm contact the Department of

Public Works at 973-399-6690. If one occurs after normal work hours please contact the Irvington Police

Department 973-399-6602.

How can the Township assist me? When a sewer backup is reported to us, the Department of Public Works dispatches men specially trained

and equipment designed to eliminate the blockage. The average response time is less than two hours. A

truck with high pressure hoses and specially designed nozzles is sent to the location and the hoses are

introduced into the clogged line. The hose and nozzles is sent under high pressure into the blockage,

forcing the line open. When grease buildup is the cause of the blockage, special chemicals are used to

dissolve the material.

This is the only effective way of eliminating a sewer blockage.

Why does the waste end up in the basements: When the main sewer line is backed up the waste generated in your home either stays in the line or looks

for a weak spot (i.e. toilet or shower in the basement or an improperly tighten sewer cleanout). Because,

the only way to eliminate a sewer backup is to use equipment that operates under high pressure; an

improperly tighten sewer cleanout cap can pop off causing water and waste to pour into a basement.

How can this be prevented? Since the Township is obligated to respond to a sewer backup and since the use of high pressure is the

only efficient method of dealing with a blocked sewer, it is up to the property owner to make sure that he/

she has done everything to prevent or minimize the effects of a sewer backup.

The property owner should make sure that the cap on the sewer cleanout is tightening properly. The property

owner should also look into installing a “BACKFLOW PREVENTER” – this is a one way valve, that we recommend be

installed by a licensed plumber. The one way valve allows waste and water to flow OUT into the main sewer line and

does not allow material to flow back through the line into your basement.
