UNDERSTANDING THE BED BUGWhy is it that this small bug has become such a pest?

The nocturnal bed bug feeds on human blood. So, the perfect area for them to hide is typically in sleeping quarters; in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, cracks, crevices and night stands or dressers near beds. This keeps them close to their human food source.

From the bedroom they travel by way of clothing, suitcases and briefcases to other areas where people spend time and are then easily transplanted to an office, store, warehouse or manufacturing facility, where they will seek out new food sources and a new place to call their home.

IDENTIFYING A BED BUG PROBLEMThe first sign a problem with bed bugs exists is usually the red itchy bites experienced by the people in the affected surroundings.

When bites are noticed, it is time to start looking for the source. They are typically found in bedding, upholstery, carpeting and nearby cracks and crevices.

Signs to look for are:

• Bed bugs themselves in various stages from egg to adult.

• Bed bug exoskeletons which are shed and left behind as they move through each stage of growth.

• The dark spotting of bed bug feces.

CONTROLLING BED BUGSControlling bed bugs can be difficult, particularly when looking for a solution that is safe for the residents, guests or employees of your facilities. Even the use of traditional, less safe pesticides is now an issue.

An article in the Wall Street Journal (Rapidly Evolving Bed Bugs Won’t Die by Robert Lee Hotz, January 26, 2011) indicates that use of many traditional pesticides is becoming less effective because the bed bugs are evolving their own biochemical defenses against those pesticides, becoming more resistant. It states that laboratory testing shows bed bugs can now survive doses a thousand times greater than the lethal dose from a decade ago.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF A BED BUGAn adult female bed bug can lay 5 to 12 eggs, per day. The eggs usually hatch 6 to 17 days later – 11 days on average. Once they hatch, the new nymphs will start on a 5-stage feeding and molting progression toward adulthood. This progression can take 32 to 48 days as they typically feed once every 5 to 10 days.

When food supplies are readily available for bed bugs, they will typically live 10 months. However, without adequate blood supplies they can live even longer. They have been found to live in empty buildings for over one year.

This evidence of bed bugs hiding under upholstery includes eggs, smaller nymphs, adults, shed exoskeletons and feces.

United proposes a solution for these issues with safer, bio-based alternatives for which the bed bugs have not developed a resistance.

UNITED’S BED BUG MITIGATION PROGRAM Do a thorough cleaning

of the affected area before treating:• Vacuum entire area.

• Wash all bedding and clothing in hot water and dry with high heat.

• Continue with diligent cleaning until problem is eliminated. Be sure to wash bedding weekly.

Treat Mattresses and Upholstered Areas with United 239 SLEEP TIGHT Bed Bug Spray.SLEEP TIGHT is bio-based and safer to use and for the environment. The natural botanicals in SLEEP TIGHT will kill bed bug larvae, nymphs and adults on contact. It is water-based and will not stain most fabrics. Spray mattresses weekly when changing bed linens and spray carpeting and other upholstered surfaces every 2 weeks. This botanical formulation is 25b exempt from federal EPA registrations.

Treat bed frames, box springs, cracks and crevices with United 236 DUSTED Powdered Insecticide.DUSTED is a botanical based product that is EPA registered with applications for bed bugs. This powdered formula remains safer to use in areas where contact with people or animals is a concern. It is perfect for applying into cracks and crevices, inside the bottom of the box springs, around floor boards and in dressers and nightstands behind and under the drawers – all the areas where the bugs like to hide. The powdered formula adheres to the bed bugs as they crawl through it and is tracked back to the nest, helping to spread the product where it is needed. DUSTED provides residual protection for up to six months, but must be reapplied if product is removed or vacuumed up during regular cleaning.
