A District Cooling System produces chilled water within a centralized energy plant, distributes it through underground pipes to buildings and provides them with air-conditioning. Once used in customer buildings, the water is returned to the central plant to be chilled again then re-circulated through the closed-loop piping system.

What is District Cooling?

By developing an ‘intelligent’ District Cooling System, Veolia contributes to reducing energy consumption and operation costs and enhances real-estate net space and urban landscape. We advise our customers to make this District Cooling System a model for smart growth and sustainable development.

How? We make sure that our systems are attractive with a high level of energy efficiency and a strong environmentally-friendly profile. This matches our commitment to ensure that our systems help end-users reduce their carbon footprints.

Veolia aims at providing excellent service to the many high-profile buildings and attractions served by our District Cooling Systems, as we collectively work toward a more sustainable environment. It means providing reliability, comfort and performance with guaranteed chilled water tariffs.

Advantages of District Cooling?

1 Building Air-conditioning System

Heat is generated within the buildings as a result of the internal activity (people and computers, for example) as well as the external climatic conditions.

2 Energy Transfer Station

The heat from the building air-conditioning system is transferred into the District Cooling (DC) chilled water network through the Energy Transfer Station (ETS), located in the basement of the building.

3 Chilled Water Network – return to DC plant

The DC chilled water network is a closed circuit. It is used for transferring the warm water from the ETS to the DC plant and chilled water from the DC plant to the ETS.

4 Chillers

The water is cooled to the required temperature using centrifugal chillers which work on the vapor compression principle (similar principle to a common fridge).

Saadiyat Cooling: 8 step process

5 Condenser Water Circuit

The condenser water circuit is an open circuit within the DC plant building. The heat extracted from the chilled water by the chillers is rejected in the condenser water loop and is discharged into the atmosphere via the cooling towers.

6 Cooling Towers

Cooling towers remove heat from the water by forcing the evaporation of water by inducing a strong air draft through the water flow. Upon contact with this air draft, a small portion of the water droplets evaporate. The change of phase of the water takes energy; this energy is taken from the droplet, translating into a decrease in its temperature.

7 Thermal Energy Storage

Thermal Energy Storage charges up chilled water during the periods of low cooling demand. The stored chilled water is later used during periods of high cooling demand.

8 Chilled Water Network – supply to customers

The chilled water is conveyed from the DC plant to the buildings using the DC network supply pipes.
