“The pessimist

complains about the

wind; the optimist

expects it to change; the

realist adjusts the sails.”

In this issue of the Nautilus I have found some wise words of humanity which I want to share with you all. You might have read them somewhere in books or magazines but there is no harm reading them again, they will make you more humble. Life is a gift. It is a challenging gift, though, full of fears and dangers, and in order to deal with problems, we are provided with few tools, not the least of which being “hope”. Hope and kindness and truth. Truth is often hope from those wiser than ourselves, the quotes we cherish in our hearts to light the way for us when we need them the most.

“Everybody has problems. Everybody has bad times. Do we sacrifice all the good times because of them?”

“The five W’s of life! WHO you are is what makes you special. Do not change for anyone.

WHAT lies ahead will always be a mystery. Do not be afraid to explore.

WHEN life pushes you over, you push back harder.

WHERE there are choices to make, make the one you won’t regret.

WHY things happen will never be certain. Take it in stride and move forward. “

Finally I would like this quote by William A. Ward: “The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.”

“Life isn’t meant to be easy, it’s meant to be lived. Sometimes happy, other times rough...but with every up and down you learn lessons that make you strong.”

“Happiness often sneaks in a door you did not think was open.”

“When I look back on my life, I see pain, mistakes and heart ache. When I look in the mirror, I see strength, learned lessons, and pride in MYSELF”

“I fall, I rise, I make mistakes, I live, I learn, I’ve been hurt but I’m alive. I’m human, I’m not perfect but I’m thankful.”

“ It is my prayer that the

Year of the Goat will bring

good fortune, happiness

and blessings ... ”

Firstly, let me wish all our Chinese brothers and sisters a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

It is my prayer that the Year of the Goat will bring good fortune, happiness and blessings to all members of the Club.

This 28 March 2015 will be our Patron’s Nite. This is where we give honour and thanks to our beloved Patron, the Governor of Penang, Tun Dato’ Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas.

The Main Committee hopes that all sections and members will support this event to show our love and gratitude to our Patron.

All the sections are carrying on with their events and recently the DanceSport Group had their event “One Night in Shanghai”.

The Sailing Section is having its International Regatta, starting from Friday 6 - 8 March 2015.

I hope that members, whether you are a section member or not, will give support to all the events, especially when it is termed a “Club Event”.

We have had two EGMs, and another EGM will be called to resolve the issues the Club is facing. The is solely to prevent the Registrar of Societies to come in and take over the running of the Club.

We hope that the members will bear with us, and attend the EGM. which will be fixed sometime in April 2015, so that some of the issues can be resolved.

Thank you.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Simon ChengGeneral Manager

I would like to start my message with this quote. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endless changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. This is what I hoped for all of us at PSC.

As we moved into the months of February and March, we had the Valentine’s Celebration on 14th February 2015 at the Captain’s Restaurant. Hope you had a sweet Valentine’s Buffet Dinner with your loved ones!

We had the PSC Chap Goh Meh’s Celebration at the seafront area on 5th March 2015. Highlights of the evening were buffet dinner priced at RM18.00+ (member) and RM28.00+ (guest), live band entertainment, lion dance, acrobatics lion dance and appearance of the God of Prosperity. The annual KFC-PSC International Regatta was also held from 6th to 8th March at the seafront / sailing area.

from our encounters

with new experiences... ”

Almost 8 months ago, I offered myself to be elected to the Main Committee of PSC at the AGM. At that time I told the meeting that I would do my best to look after the interest of the members. I also said that I know serving in the committee is a thankless job as I had previously served in the committee many years ago.

The Club, 30 years ago, was smaller in many ways than it is today. At that time when I was in the committee, we were embarking on a Master Plan Competition organised in conjunction with the Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (Malaysian Institute of Architects). Today, we have the Tower Block, the Multi-Storey Carpark and the Marina Walkway which are part of the proposals of the winning entry of the Master Plan Competition. Our membership has also grown by 100% since then.

Many past presidents of the Club would often boast that we are a Premier Club. This is a statement that I often find difficult to reconcile. Although our Club’s seafront location has given it outstanding views of the sea, I would not claim that we have the best facilities. Our one and only swimming pool is more than 100 years old and has outlived its economic and structural lifespan. Indeed expensive repairs are needed to further prolong its lifespan. Various parts of the century-old clubhouse have undergone extensive repairs and refurbishments as have other facilities like the boatyard and the boat ramp.

This year would have been a critical time to strategically plan for renewal and replacement of old facilities. The leasehold status of various plots of land where our original facilities are sited has to be renewed every 30 years and we are currently almost halfway through the lease period. This is a constant item of expenditure that the Club has to bear that will run into millions of Ringgit. Talk of applying to the State to convert the leasehold status to freehold has been going on for some time and committees come and go but it would appear that only a superhero would be able to bring this to fruition.

However, it has now come to pass that the management of the Club is in total disarray. But what everyone has to realise is that the situation today is not the result of some action yesterday. It goes back many years... the fact that the Club has been run by 5 different general managers over the past five years is telling. The past few months have seen an unprecedented assault on the committee masterminded by a belligerent few. How did a simple and straightforward case of swimmers being allowed by previous committees to hold training on Sunday and public holidays result in the resignation of the President and Club Captain? The answer to this imbroglio is relatively simple although it has been complicated and confused by those who sought to discredit the past President and committee. It only took one very determined member to bring down the members of the committee and along with it, whatever the good work and time that were sacrificed by the member of the committee. Misinformation, rumours, fear and even religion were sown by these people through chatgroups and in all corners of the Club. The lack of effective communication by the current President and committee has further encouraged the spurious comments by these people, leading to the defeat of the committee’s stand on the issues.

People who have been elected to lead the Club should have been given the opportunity to present their plans for the future of the Club and to manage the affairs of the Club to the best of their wisdom. This is not a matter of good over evil or right over wrong, and certainly not to create this division of “us” against “them”. Those who have been elected in the various capacities whether in the Main Committee, Development Committee, Elections Committee or Disciplinary Committee must act with wisdom, think strategically and for the long-term and not be blinded by a false sense of self-righteousness, one-upmanship and cavalier posturing.

I reiterate that service to the Club is a thankless job and members should appreciate that and not make it more difficult than it is for those who are volunteering their time, expertise and wisdom to carry out their responsibilities without fear or favour. The task of the committee is made much harder by the lack of continuity in the management staff.

Members ultimately decide on the direction of the Club, and at the moment, a small group, some with personal scores to settle, is stirring a storm in a teacup.

On 14 February 2015, Penang Swimming Club was embraced in an ambience of warmth and love as members treated their families and loved ones to a scrumptious dinner at the Captain’s Restaurant. CLUB HAPPENINGS

There is nothing quite like a fun filled day at the beach. The event started at 4pm with a game of beach cricket. It was the first time such a game is organised, it was entertaining as rules were made up along the way. Member of all ages, men and women, all joined in.

We also launched the doughnut water tube, pulled by our 200HP rescue boat, a popular choice for thrill seekers. Children were so excited and wanted more but we had to stop at 6pm to get ready for the BBQ.

A bonfire was set up by the children, and with great food and wine, all are joyful and satisfied. The sailing section had a lot more than just fun. 80 members and guests had a taste of the sun, sand and sea, a perfect recipe for the weekend.

ANOTHER HISTORY IN THE MAKING!

For the past three years, the PENANG SWIMMING CLUB

Swimming Team had emerged victorious in the Penang

State Age Group Swimming Championship for both

categories of gold medals and overall points accumulated.

It was a rare feat ever achieved by any swimming team

in Penang, and for Penang Swimming Club, it was

the greatest achievement ever accomplished by the

Swimming Team.

We attributed this glorious success to the undivided

support from the Main Committee and also the full

dedication from our coaching team.

This year, the 51st PASA-Speedo State Age Group

Swimming Championship will be held for three days

from 6 March to 8 March 2015 at the Chinese Swimming

Club. This year, 83 swimmers registered to take part in

this swimming meet in various events under different

age groups, it will be the greatest challenge for us as the

other swimming clubs and teams will send their strongest

line-ups to wrestle back both trophies which we held in

firm possession for three consecutive years.

It will be another history if the PSC Swimming Team could

win both trophies again this year, so we look forward to

getting full support from all the club members to make

this impossibility possible!

The fun-filled Annual Angling Carnival held on 11 January 2015 was a time of relaxing outdoor activities enjoyed by many members. Sprawling over the spacious Sailing Area and old walkway, 74 members and their children commenced the programme with a fishing competition. The excitement was instilled by prizes for the first 41 anglers who caught fishes regardless of weight. On top of that, there was another round of recognition for top six heaviest catches!

Next in line was a team event for sand carving. Four teams, comprised of 5 to 7 members each, took part. Winners of the top three were rewarded with prizes.

The event ended with a simple buffet dinner that was heartwarming for all.

The group comprised nine angling members and the section’s regular marshal, all who travelled some 7 hours in a convoy of four vehicles. Angling Section and Tai Chi Group jointly celebrated Pre-Chinese New Year Dinner on Sunday, 8 Feb 2015.

Some 80 Angling and Tai Chi members had a joyous pre-Chinese New Year dinner. Participants mostly clad in typical Chinese New Year theme, had an eight-course dinner with mandarin oranges and ground nuts spread around the tables, exuding a celebratory New Year feel.

The festive joy was further escalated with karaoke singing, which kicked off with Chinese New Year songs. The party had the privilege of being entertained by the winning team of the recent karaoke competition - the team representing Angling Section, Stanley Chew, Joy Yeoh and Koh Ewe Tee. While many other singers continued to take the microphone, some members danced away to the joyful tune.

The party dispersed only when the singing ended.

Seventy (20 more than last year!) Scuba Section members sat down for the Annual Scuba Chinese New Year celebration on Friday, 27 February 2015. Most were wearing at least one item of red clothing...on the outside. Some claimed that the item was on the inside!

The atmosphere was “boisterous” with many older members catching up, babies being introduced for the first time (congratulations to Jason) and new members getting used to the informality for which the party is famous for...and

drinking more than their fair share of the wine allocation. Speeches were short and relatively sharp with Jon Ooi thanking the present committee on a job well done and cooperation with good team to work with and Fred McGuire concentrating on “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”...only he knows why.

Thanks to Annie Lim for organising a great event and the Club Staff for staying ahead.

In conjunction with the Chinese New Year, our classes have been themed with Chinese New Year songs and dances. One of which is the Chinese Fan Dance. In Chinese culture, nothing is more graceful than the Chinese Fan Dance which dates back to 2000 years ago. The delicate movements of the opening and closing of the fans is undeniably beautiful to watch. The members were so captivated with the dance that they have requested for us to keep it as a permanent feature in our Mix Dance class on Tuesday. Come and experience this gorgeous and graceful dance with us.

Yoga members took part in the Inter-sections Karaoke Competition on 30 Jan 2015. The competition kicked-off with Leanne Cheah as the first contestant rendering Abba’s song, “SOS!”-“Don’t take that, a call for help, yeah?” Leanne who rarely sings, participated just to fulfil the number!

Jennifer Yeoh, Vanessa and Leanne Cheah may not have won us the trophy, but their participation is itself, a victory for the group! Shu Chen, who represented us last year, was delighted to see the presence of more Yoga Group supporters in comparison to the miserable two when she participated! Feeling motivated, assured of her entry next year. Regrettably, she was one of the several others who left before the group photo was taken.

At time of writing, we are in the midst of preparing for our AGM cum CNY celebration!

Karaoke Section One Nite in Shanghai “One Nite in Shanghai” on 6 February 2015 was another night of merriment. The event had several ladies turning up in sexy cheongsams, and men looking good in traditional Chinese shirts/costumes. Charlie also traded his bandana for a cap and Lee Ah Teik was every inch a “gangland boss from Shanghai” (armed and dangerous with his fists!). 100 members had a good time winning prizes for spot dances, and turning chairs over to look for hidden tickets to a possible RM3,000,000 fortune. Well, nobody went home empty-handed. Every member was greeted with an orange, a nien-gao, an angpow and enjoyed delicious food from the Snake Temple. Let’s all hope our programmes get better all the time, ya?

Because of the massive traffic jams everywhere, the crowd turnout did not meet expectations. However, members who were present gave their support to all the competitors and it was a rowdy crowd alright. Watch out for up and coming new singers because these young ones are going to give the veterans a tough fight next year. Thanks to all the Chairpersons of The Aerobics, Library, Yoga, Sailing, Darts, Tennis, Angling, Dancesport, Scuba, Tai Chi and Swimming Sections for helping to make this event a success.

Grand Theme Night: One Nite in ShanghaiWe had our theme night, One Night in Shanghai, on 28 Feb 2015. This was our grand theme night, being the last one before end of the 2014/15 term. Since this was also Chinese New Year, it was a double celebration. The dinner was a Chinese sit down dinner, and we had the opportunity to do the Lau Sang, may our wishes be realized. The DSS senior dancers performed a formation Swing Waltz to start the evening. It was as good and gracefully done as always. Later dancers from The Annie’s Dance World put up a show of synchronized Latin dance. The talented young dancers demonstrated a spirited and lively dancing. The program was well designed to not let the dancers wait too long, and between dishes, they all have time for their favourite dances.

Next, we elected our best dressed ladies. Three winners were selected from among ten dressed in traditional Chinese costume. It was quite wonderful to see our ladies dressed in colourful traditional dresses. The evening was in high spirit, and one could feel the vibrant energy level prevailing. It was truly an evening for the dancers. All good things must come to an end, so it was good night at mid night, till we meet again.

We met and shared some of our thoughts with our dance Instructor, Mr Peter Ang, recently to both learn a little more about him and to have his views on dancing activities in PSC.

Mr Peter Ang, and Sharmaine presently conduct classes in Latin Solo, Mixed Dance, and Modular Latin. He has assisted the club in choreographing and overseeing practices on dances for a number of club events. Mr Ang started his professional career in 1996, after a period of active participation in competitive dancing. He is an amateur member of the International Dance Teachers Association, IDTA, and had been trained under top coaches in Latin dances, including Mr Loke Tze Hao.

We spoke to Peter on his views on dancing activities in PSC. His advices to our dancers are as follows; it is important to have a good foundation of sound basic and correct techniques. Frequent practice is vital, willing to update and modernize (upgrade) one’s dancing ability. He is pleased to note that there are sufficient members in PSC who are able to dance to his choreograph beautifully. It would be helpful to have differentiated classes such as beginner, advanced, and techniques to cater to different need.

Moving forward, he hopes to continue to play a role in advancing the interest and popularity in dancing at PSC. His parting words were, use what you have learnt and get onto the floor and dance! Dance like nobody is watching.

After our debut in 2012, once again the Penang Sports Club extended an invitation for us to enter this year’s Penang Sports Club International Seniors Invitational Tennis Tournament which was held from 16 to 18 January 2015 at the Penang Sports Club. A total of 12 clubs participated with 3 teams coming from Sports Club and one team each from the rest, including Darwin Garden Tennis Club, Jakarta Senayan Club, Trang Tennis Club, Kelab Darul Ehsan, Lake View Club, Wilson Friends, Sungai Petani Club, Kulim Club and lastly, our club.

Our team consisted of Lim Khoon Seng, Lim Ene Chin and Aaron Tay playing in the men’s doubles 55 years old and above. Meanwhile Jeffrey Peh, Victor Wong and Sunny Ng played in the men’s doubles 45 years old and above. For the ladies’ doubles 45 years old and above we have Felicia Pegg, Sue Hee and Joyce Chung. The tournament started off with 12 teams being divided into 4 groups with the round robin format being played. We were up against Trang Tennis Club and Sports Club Black Team where we lost to both of them who turn up to be the eventual 3rd and 4th place winners.

Being third in the group, we were then placed into the plate competition with the Sungai Petani Club, Jakarta Senayan Club and Sports Club Yellow Team for another round robin format being played. We started off well with victory over Sports Club Yellow Team and Jakarta Senayan Club. However we lost narrowly to Sungai Petani Club. With all the matches being played, we were tied against Sports Club Yellow Team and Sungai Petani Club with the same ties being won and lost. So the winner will need to be decided on the basis of the number of games won/lost.

Finally, after three days of hard work by the players, it eventually paid off as we claimed the Plate Championship with 4 games difference from the second place team. Congratulation to the players for the superb performance and fighting spirit. We would also like to thank the supporters for being there to give the players full support and inspiration throughout their matches. Lastly, we would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the Penang Sports Club for hosting such a wonderful and successful event.

Library Section emerges Champion in the Inter-section/group Karaoke CompetitionNot only can Library members read and write well but they can also sing, as evidenced by the Championship Trophy they won on the 30 Jan 2015. The photo shows the 3 representative sof the Library Group, (from left) Low Mei Leng, Cecilia Chew and Josephine flanked by Karaoke Chairman, Lee Boon Seng and Club Captain, Lim Hooi Siang.

Thank you ladies. Well done!

The Library pays tribute to

Dato’ Mahinder Singh Dulku

the library to stand as a beacon of a fight to institute an icon that this 111 year-old PSC so rightfully deserves. It is a sad day for the club and all members that he chose to leave this club as an OTM after all he has done . Was there so much unhappiness in him that he has turned away from something he loved so dearly? However Dato’ is now officially appointed as a respected ‘Trustee’ of the Penang Swimming Club.

We wish him all the best and may his high standard of leadership be emulated by all those who come after him. Thank you Dato...from all in the PSC Library by Tan Siew Hoon

It was on 9 January 2015, that a selected group of members were sent a special note of goodbye from Dato’ Mahinder Singh Dulku. I was the lucky one (call it unlucky, given the sorrowful mood it set me in after that). The words “effective the end of last month, I am no longer an Ordinary Transferable Member of the PSC”, haunted me and I was too despondent and solicitous to reply.

This special tribute to Dato’ Mahinder, one of the finest past Presidents of PSC, is to thank him and let the members know that, in 2010, without Dato’s brave move in response to a petition by 280 signatories to requisit an EGM to shoot down the building of the Library (despite the fact that the budget of RM500,000 was unanimously approved 2 years before in 2008) the Library would not have been born. Sadly there was no quorum (200 needed) as the majority of the signatories, including the writer of the petition chose not to turn up, making a mockery of the club and everything principled in it. Members can still remember Dato’s words when the EGM was called off :-”....henceforth, let no one speak a word against the construction of this Library. With immediate effect the construction/renovation of the Library starts and it will be handed to the Club exactly 3 months from today”. This reaffirmation is reassurance to the club members and lovers of literary works that our correct ideals and path of righteousness will always live in the hearts of good Presidents and good members. Dato’ Mahinder’s head will be held high and the light will always shine on the Library he has helped to save.

Never one to be a disinterested bystander, as an ordinary member or a President, he has allowed

We have successfully introduced a dedicated library website in September last year. Leveraging on information technology to bring our club library closer to home, or your smart-phone, we plan to introduce a web-based Library Management System in Q2 this year. This will enable library members to; I. Perform book search (by author, title, ISBN),

II. Check for book availability and reserve books for collection,

III. An inventory of books borrowed by members,

IV. Auto reminders for overdue books,

V. Renew books, all performed in the comfort of his/her home via the internet. We are proud to say that Penang Swimming Club will be the first private club in Penang to employ the best there is in its class for Library Information Technology. This system would significantly enhance the overall productivity in managing our club library.

The library committee has launched a request for quotation (RFQ) to engage a suitable local and international IT vendor. We will continue to keep you posted, stay tuned!
