Notes from the

Pastor’s Pen . . . This morning I spent some time in the office cleaning out my desk drawers. I discovered a terrible thing about myself – I am a paper hoarder. I found old sermons, keys that I have no idea what they belong to, notes I made to myself so I wouldn’t forget – I forgot. I also found lots of nice cards from some of you (that was fun). There were many other things in that drawer, some sad, some sweet, and some that I wonder why I even kept that. Why do we hold onto things in our junk drawers – and our lives? Will we ever use that twisty tie again, or do we really need 50 pencils? I don’t know, but I do know I certainly don’t need a lot of the stuff in my junk drawers and cabinets. How do I get these things, really? I have been thinking about stuff for a while now. I know I have too much stuff. I’ve been going through my closets and even got Tom to go through his. Marie Kondo says, “if it doesn’t bring you joy, get rid of it.” That’s my new motto. I even gave some of my nativities to the LDS church for their annual nativity display. I did keep a few that are special to me, but many more people will be able to enjoy them now. But I do like “stuff.” I once collected shot glasses. Not because I drink – I don’t – but because it was always so much fun to see the different types and designs of glasses of places I traveled. I have since given that up as it took up too much room. I have one left, the very first shot glass I ever collected. It was a gift from my friend when she went to Germany. Now I collect smashed pennies which take up infinitely less room.

Notes from Pastor (Cont.) I say all this because I wonder how much stuff we have in our lives that keep us from our true calling. What could we get rid of that would bring us closer to God? Perhaps you gave up something recently for Lent but then took it back on Easter morning. But perhaps there are things in our lives we should give up permanently – those things that keep us far from God. I’m still working on getting rid of stuff. It’s a process. I’m thankful for my daughter, Heather, who always gives me that look when I want to keep something I shouldn’t. As we get closer to summer and warmer weather, think about doing some spring cleaning in your house and your life. Don’t let anything come between you and God. Have a blessed May! I’ll look for you in church! Pastor Vonda

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies! We are trying something new for treats after worship. We are asking everyone to bring cookies next Sunday, May 5, whether store bought or homemade. We will use some cookies on Sunday and then freeze/store the other cookies for use on later Sundays. We will use the cookies until they are gone and then ask for more cookies to start again.

You may continue to sign up for treats on the board posted in the Narthex (Church Lobby). Special events and celebrations are always welcome. We will only use the cookies when no one has signed up to be a coffee host for a particular Sunday.

“Bunny-tiful” Easter

Carnival Our first annual Easter Carnival on Wednesday, April 17, was a fun time for all with our Bunny Hop Easter Egg Hunt, Egg Roll Obstacle Course, Face Painting, Mini Cake Walk, Crafts and more. We even had a surprise visit by the Easter Bunny.

Thank you to everyone who helped work on the Carnival preparations. There were multiple hours of filling eggs by many helping hands. Big thanks also goes out to everyone who helped by contributing to our event with Easter eggs and candy. Last but not least, thank you to all of you who helped at the Easter Carnival event. Many smiling faces were seen that night. I hope you felt the joy by all those who attended. --Shelly Buller Christian Education Director

Planned-Giving The goal of planned giving is to help you plan your estate and charitable giving in a way that benefits you, your family, and charity. There are many ways you can make a planned gift to charity and enjoy tax and income benefits. One way is:

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT)

Your Goal: •You own cash or property and are looking for a way to make a charitable gift, save on taxes and receive fixed income for the future. How It Works: •You transfer your cash or property to fund a charitable remainder annuity trust. •The trust sells your property tax free and provides you with fixed income for life or a term of years. Your Benefits: •Fixed income for life, lives or term of years •Avoid capital gains tax on the sale of your appreciated assets •Charitable income tax deduction for remainder portion of your gift For more than 50 years, the Northwest United Methodist Foundation has provided United Methodist churches, agencies, and individuals with resources about stewardship, planned-giving, and endowments. If you would like additional information regarding the topic of a Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust (CRAT) or on any of the other types of planned giving instruments or gifts, please contact us at 800-488-4179 or [email protected].
