The Malaysian edition of the World
Championship F1 Grand Prix is
well known for its unpredictable
weather: scorching heat one
minute and tropical storm
the next. But it is this very
unpredictability that has made
it one of the most exciting races
of the season, with teams and
drivers getting to grips with
their new equipment and many
races being heavily influenced
by the winners and losers of the
scramble for position into the
tight double hairpin bend at the
first corner.
The upcoming race from 27 to 29
March offers yet another exciting
proposition, but off the race track
this time. SIC Chairman Tan Sri
Mokhzani Mahathir revealed that
the second round of the 2015 FIA
Formula 1 World Championship
will now be a wholesome family
affair.
With V6 engines producing a
quieter, deeper sound than
the screaming banshees of
the past, the race weekend is
definitely more acceptable and
comfortable for families with
young children as noise levels
have fallen below the threshold
of pain! F1 fans no longer need
to choose between quality family
time on a weekend and watching
the race.
“In conjunction with the
Malaysia Year of Festival 2015,
we were inspired to make the F1
Grand Prix programme one that
celebrates the position of the
race as an event that is firmly
embedded in the public mind.

“After 17 years, we firmly believe
that many Malaysians look
forward to the race, even if they
only watch it at home or enjoy
photo opportunities during our
annual F1 Grand Prix roadshow.
Indeed, we are focusing on the
family-theme to draw them out
of the living room into the high-
octane atmosphere of the circuit
itself,” said Tan Sri Mokhzani.
This year’s programme - themed
‘Experience F1 Like Never
Before’ transforms the circuit
and the grounds into a huge
entertainment space dubbed the
‘F1 Carnival’. It features family
and child-friendly activities to
encourage families to make
the race their weekend outing.
The carnival event happening
within SIC’s premises during race
weekend amplifies the family
fiesta atmosphere, with many
entertainment and off-track
activities – expanding the F1
experience beyond the race.
The carnival will have something
for all members of the family,
including a fun fair with games,
amusement rides and other
carnival-style attractions
including staples like clowns,
balloons and cotton candy. While
the children enjoy the kids and
tween zone featuring a role play
pit mock up, water obstacles and
cool zone, men and women who
enjoy adrenaline activities or
shopping can spend time karting
and drifting at the X-track or shop
at the F1 Village.

For die-hard fans, they can expect
an all-out intense battle as
world champion Lewis Hamilton
and the Petronas-sponsored
Mercedes team attempt another
championship winning season.
Last year, Hamilton opened his
assault on the world title in
Sepang by winning the first of
four consecutive races, which
was the foundation for his 2014
championship.
Hamilton will come under
severe pressure from former
champions, Sebastian Vettel,
Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button
and Kimi Raikkonen and a host of
other rising stars like his former
team mate Daniel Ricciardo and
William’s Valtteri Bottas. And of
course, the biggest challenge
will come from his own PETRONAS
Mercedes team mate, Nico
Rosberg.
Another exciting season is in store with drivers competing for the top podium at Sepang

8 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE MAC 2015
This year, the Sepang International
Circuit (SIC) and SRO Motorsports
Group is jointly organising the
Sepang 12 Hours race on the 4th to
6th December 2015.
The Sepang 12 Hours race replaces
the popular Malaysia Merdeka
Endurance Race (MMER) which has
been organised by SIC since 1999. The
partnership with SRO Motorsports,
organisers of the highly successful
Blancpain Endurance Series, will
further elevate the profile and
stature of the Sepang 12 Hours.
SIC’s CEO, Dato’ Razlan Razali said
“We have been working on this
partnership with SRO Motorsports
Group for some time and I am
delighted that it has come to fruition.
SRO Motorsports Group brings with
them a wealth of knowledge and
know-how which will go a long way
in transforming the Sepang 12 Hours
further into a world-class race.”
The Sepang 12 Hours will be one
of the highlights for SIC this year.
The December event provides
opportunities to attract competitors
from other championships and
events such as the Japanese Super
GT, Macau GP and Bathurst to name
a few.
The Sepang 12 Hours event is
open to Touring Production and GT
machineries, with SRO Motorsports
Group concentrating on the latter.
The focus will be to bring SRO’s
experience and race networks in both
theGT3-GT4categoriesandinrunning
long-distance events to Malaysia and
to develop the Sepang 12 Hours to
one of the must-participate events
on the international motorsports
calendar.
Sepang International Circuit (SIC),
also revealed that the highly popular
Malaysia Super Series Championship
for Cars and Bikes will be split into
two separate categories.
Previously grouped together
under the Malaysian Super Series
championship banner, the bikes
and cars divisions will have their
own championships due to the
rising number of participants and
increasing volume of enthusiasts.
Beginning this year, the cars category
will be known as the Malaysia
Championship Series (MCS), while
the bikes category will be labelled as
the Malaysia Superbike Series (MSS).
“These are indeed thrilling times for
motorsports in the country. We have
seen positive growth in both the
bikes and cars events through the
increased number of participants
and support races. A change was
needed and I believe the time is
right to introduce the MCS and MSS,”
said SIC CEO, Dato’ Razlan Razali at a
special event in January. - By Zainal

In 1978, singers-songwriters
Horn, Downes and Woolley fretted
over the effects of technology
and 20th-century inventions for
the media arts and predicted in
their new wave-synthpop song
that Video would kill the radio
star. They could not have been

27 years later, radio is more
relevant now than ever before.
In conjunction with World Radio
Day, iM4U fm, a relatively new kid
on the block of radio stations in
Malaysia, celebrated the unique
power of ‘Youth and Radio’ with
the launch of its spanking new
studio. iM4U fm is targeted mainly
at youths and aims to spread
messages about volunteerism,
positive values and nation-
building. It is broadcast over the
frequency of 107.9 fm or www.
iM4Ufm.my for streaming.
The Power ofYouth and Radio
10 KEMBARA PLUS ONLINE MAC 2015
Touted as the only non-profit
station in Malaysia, iM4U fm is
able to spearhead social causes
and discuss issues close to its
heart as it is not revenue-focused.
The fresh, vibrant concept of iM4U
fm’s new studio reflects positive
youth participation in the radio
community which is aligned with
iM4U’s mission to boost and instill
the spirit of volunteerism amongst
young Malaysians.
As radio is the most accessible
communication medium to
reach their target audience,
iM4U fm hopes to become the
preferred station among youths
and to provide a platform for the
development of fresh ideas and
creativity. Recognising that young
people do not like to be told what to
do, the station approaches youths
through music that they like to first
capture their attention. Only then
are elements of volunteerism and
positive values included, amplified
by the power of radio.
iM4U fm is also reaching out to their
fans by organizing events, special
activities and contests through
campus invasions and iM4U Street
Teams. Judging by the enthusiastic
response at these events and the
sharp growth of listeners, iM4U
fm is not too far from reaching its
finest hour. To quote that iconic

Armed with this belief, iM4U was
established to encourage and
attract youths to volunteerism
and socializing with communities
around Malaysia. The not-for-
profit organization is not just
about instilling altruism amongst
Gen Y and Z but also providing
them with opportunities to
develop skills, learn more
about career options, make
friends, garner new professional
contacts, get exercise, spend
time outdoors/with animals/
with kids, or just shake up their
routine through volunteering
activities.
To do that, their attention and
buy-in must first be captured.
Towards this end, iM4U has
launched ‘Reach Out’, a series
of conventions and celebrations
where entertainment is merged
with the serious messages. The
‘Reach Out’ roadshows are taking
place around Malaysia including
Sabah n Sarawak in venues such
as Politeknik Seberang Perai,
UiTM Kota Kinabalu, Politeknik
Kuching and others throughout
February and March.
Rudi Malik, the Chief Operating
Officer of iM4U, acknowledged
that it was a challenge to convince
colleges and institutions of
higher learning that Reach Out
was not another run-of-the-mill
convention but a unique platform
to promote volunteerism to
urban youth through sharing of
experiences by champions of
volunteerism who are successful
in their own arenas.
Sinceitsbirthin2013,ReachOut
has introduced international
and local icons to share their
experiences in volunteerism
and to show that volunteer

opportunities come in a variety
of exciting ways. Speakers have
included an impressive line-up
such as CNN Hero 2012 Pushpa
Basnet, co-founder of Earth Hour
Andy Ridley, Youtube sensations
David Choi, Kina Grannis
and motivational talks from
Skate4Cancer founder Rob Dyer,
violinist Sung Ahn, Micheal Teoh
(National Youth Icon and budding
entrepreneur), and National
climber Qobin.
For the entertainment element,
local acts such
as Pop Shuvit,
Mark Adam, DJ
Fuzz, Bunkface,
and Altimet have
drawn in the
crowds.
Rudi believes
that the
pop culture
approach is
the best way
to engage
youths and
introduce them to volunteerism.
“Volunteerism needs strength
physically and emotionally,
and we have that in our youths.
If we don’t put them in the
right direction, they can easily
get involved in unhealthy and
negative activities. Life is now
very challenging, so if we do
not instill positive values in our
youths, especially the spirit of
wanting to help others, they
will be blind to the hardships of
life. Volunteering is one of the
best ways we know of to make
a difference in our community.
Whatever your passion, however
you get involved, volunteering
offers a way to have a real and
lasting impact on the world,” he
added. – By Nora Atiqah Roslan

South Korea promotes itself as the “Soul of Asia”, no
doubt a tongue-in-cheek reference to its capital city
of Seoul with a similar pronunciation but with more
heart and definitely color. I found myself among a
group of entertainment writers and travel agents
heading there for a whirlwind K-Pop tour courtesy of
Korea Tourism Organisation, Oriental Escape Travel
(OET) Malaysia and SH Tours Korea.
The Korean experience began onboard Korean Air
KE672 heading for Incheon International Airport. The
innate hospitality of Koreans was evident through
the cabin crew who
were very warm, polite
and attentive to all
passengers. It was also
interesting to note that
the airline ensures
there is at least one
Malaysian or Malay
speaking cabin crew in
every flight from and to
Malaysia.

temperature upon
arrival at Incheon

harsh but we were well-prepared
to face the elements with heat-
tech undergarments and warm
winter clothing.
Our six-day trip was full of color as
I was introduced bit by bit to the
Korean lifestyle and its modern
and popular culture which has
taken the world by storm, hence
its reference as a “Korean Wave”.
One of the most memorable visits
was to Namsan Tower, a famous
romantic location for lovers to
express their feelings by “locking
in” their love with padlocks on
metal grills, similar to love locks
found on Pont des Arts in Paris
and the Ponte Vecchio bridge in
Florence. I was stunned to see
thousands of love locks bearing
the names of many nationalities.
For the record, I secured my own
love lock there too, more as a
promise to return to this city
which had taken my heart away,
rather than to any person.
Another interesting visit was
to Seoul’s WAPOP Hall located
at Children’s Grand Park which
is similar to Malaysia’s own
Istana Budaya in that it features
concerts, musical and plays.
This K-Pop stage features a
weekly show with a lineup that
changes every week, thereby
ensuring the continuity and
sustainability of Korea’s most
popular export. Here, we were
entertained with feet tumping,
head bobbing performances
by emerging K-Pop artistes
such as 24K, Flashe, A-Cian and

Meively. The hall’s state-of-the-
art lighting complemented every
performance and was a personal
highlight for me.
My K-Pop trail continued the
next day when we were brought
to the buildings of established
K-Pop recording labels such
as JYP Entertainment Centre,
CUBE Entertainment and SM
Entertainment. At the K-Pop
Dance Studio and Training Centre,
we mustered some courage to
have a go at some choreographed
K-Pop dance moves and later had
an exclusive interview session
with Korean 2014 Rookie of The
Year, ZELO of B.A.P. (see KPO April
Issue for the interview session).
The K-Pop experience continued
at the K-Live Hologram Concert
in Lotte Fitin, Dongdaemun.
Cutting-edge technology has
now made it possible for adoring
audiences to watch K-Pop stars’
holograms perform any time as
their three-dimensional images
can be summoned at will. There
are concerts from various YG
Entertainment K-Pop stars like
Psy, Big Bang 2NE1 and many more
available at a reasonable price.
K-Live definitely gave me a fresh
perspective on high definition
(HD). A similar concept is also
offered by SM Entertainment at
their latest SM Coex Artium. SM
features their own popular K-Pop
groups like Girl’s Generation,
Super Junior, TVXQ and EXO to
appeal to K-Pop fans.
As a break from the K-Pop pace,
we boarded an E-Land Cruise that
sailed across the placid Han River.
It was a wonderful experience to
see modern buildings juxtaposed
with ancient architectures. The
cruise took about an hour to
complete and a word of caution

cruise during winter: do wear
thick gloves and supplement
yourself with hot drinks! You will
need both if you decide to enjoy
the scenery and fresh air from

For fans of musicals, I would
recommend “Sachoom”, a non-
verbal musical show with a
simple plot but full of various
dance genres including hip-hop,
jazz, breakdancing and more. To
date, thismusical has toured 32
cities and was the first Korean
production to be performed at
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in
2008.
On our last day in Seoul, we visited
“Some Sevit”, three glowing
manmade islands in the Han
River which are commonly used
for cultural and art activities by
the locals. The Cycle 21 finale
of successful franchise series
“America’s Next Top Model”
was shot here on location with
the world’s first water Culture
Complex forming a stunning
backdrop to Korea’s high fashion.
Seoul in winter is a special time
to visit as you can see plenty
of beautiful winter wear from
the high-end brands down to
its trendy street fashions. I
