COMPANY PROFILE

KEMENA INDUSTRIES SDN BHD (KISB) was incorporated on

17 March 1987. It was jointly formed by IJM Corporation Bhd

(IJM) and Bintulu Development Authority (BDA). IJM is one of

the Malaysia’s leading conglomerates and is listed on the

main market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad, whereas

BDA is the local government authority.

In 1997, KISB had started to manufacture various sizes and

classes of butt joint R.C. Spun Pipe. Over the years, KISB has

expanded its business activities and improved its qualities of

production to meet customers’ expectation. The production

operations are carried out and supervised by experienced

staff. KISB’s quality control system was awarded the

prestigious ISO 9001:2008 for the manufacturing of precast

concrete products and ready mixed concrete.

INTRODUCTION

R. C. Spun Pipes are mainly used as ‘Land Drainage’ units and

‘Sewerage’ units. ‘Land Drainage’ units are intended to be

used primarily for land drainage and for the construction of

culverts. ‘Sewerage’ units are intended to be used in

conditions where more stringent requirements are necessary.

There are various types of joints available in connecting the

concrete pipes. They are spigot and socket joint, rebated joint

and butt joint (with or without collar). For KISB, we only

manufacture the concrete pipes with butt joint.

There are four classes of R.C. Spun Pipe with nominal size

ranges from 450mm to 1800mm. These four classes are

differed by the reinforcement details and structural strength.

The reinforcement requirements are predominantly catered

for handing during manufacture, storage, transport and on

site as appropriate.

SPECIFICATION AND DESIGN

R.C. Spun Pipes shall be designed AS1342: 1973, MS 881: Part

3: 1991 and BS5911: 1981. The R.C. Spun Pipes are classified

into the following:

Australian Standard British Standard

AS 1342 – 1973 BS 5911 – 1981

S Standard Reinforced

X Extra Strength Reinforced L Light

Y Special Strength Reinforced M Medium

Z Special Strength Reinforced H Heavy

APPLICATION

Drainage and sewerage system for property development,

road construction, oil palm plantations and irrigation projects.

MANUFACTURE

Steel moulds are used to manufacture the pipe culvert under

a factory-controlled environment. The spiral steel cage is

installed into the steel mould after the application of mould

oil. Unlike usual concreting method, the pipe culvert is

manufactured with centrifugally spun process, using low-

slump concrete. This process can achieve an equivalent high

compaction due to the coupling effect of vibration and

centrifugal force. The pipe can be demoulded after 15 hours

under natural curing or after at least 3 hours under steam

curing.

CONCRETE MATERIAL

AGGREGATE

Coarse aggregates and fine aggregates shall comply with MS

29.

CEMENT

Cement shall comply with MS 522.

CONCRETE

The concrete shall contain not less than 360 kg of cement per

cubic metre and shall have a maximum water/cement ratio of

0.45.

REINFORCEMENT

The straight wire and spiral wire shall comply to MS 144.

SITE INSTALLATION ARRANGEMENTS

All concrete pipes shall be installed with load line positioned

at 6 o’clock or 12 o’clock position.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Quality Assurance in the manufacture of the products is

provided by established MS ISO 9001 Quality Management

System.

Pipe Class Selection Pipe class selection is subjected to the following factors:

(a) Pipe installation conditions, either in trench or under embankment. (b) Depth of fill above the pipe culvert and type of fill materials. (c) Type of bedding as constructed at project site. (d) Superimposed load condition.

1. The pipe is tested to works proof load only.

2. The pipe shall sustain the appropriate works proof load without developing a crack of width greater than 0.25mm, running

generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe and located only at the crown, invert or spring line of the pipe.
