With Gratitude

What matters to you inspires us at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Is your passion modern and contemporary art? Meeting the artists of our time? Engaging in educa-tional (and entertaining) programs for children, families, and adults? Learning about “What’s Next?” from our dedi-cated volunteer docents? Shopping for artisan-crafted gifts? Fine dining?

The Kemper Museum offers it all. At the Kemper Museum, we strive to forge a place in the lives of occasional visitors, our loyal members, and our neighbors. We share with you a commitment to civic engagement and the advancement of Kansas City as a cultural destination.

Art can and does change lives. Every visitor, at whatever age, comes to the Museum with an active imagination and the desire to experience, learn, and engage. We are all open to the power of art to inspire. As the Museum closes a chapter by reaching our 20th Anniversary year in 2014, I am looking forward in a shared belief with our Trustees, staff, volun-teers, and you, that the next twenty years will be filled with great meaning and promise. Barbara O’Brien Executive Director

Marking 20 Years: Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art was published by the Kemper Museum in 2014, and stands as a record of the esteemed history of a cultural and civic jewel.

Dressed Up

10/11/13 to 4/27/14

Charlotte Crosby Kemper Gallery

This exhibition presents works of art—photography, collage,

and paintings—that exist at the intersection of nature, culture,

artifice, and perception. The theater of the self, influenced by

art history, pop culture, and fashion, takes center stage in

this international exhibition. Every picture in this visually lush

exhibition tells an aspect of the story of our times. Photographs

of constructed realities in the Flora series were created

in collaboration between Neeta Madahar and the subjects of

the portraits.

Conversations—Marking 20 Years

5/16/14 to 9/21/14

Charlotte Crosby Kemper Gallery

Conversations—Marking 20 Years brings together premiere

works of art from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art on

the occasion of the Museum’s 20th anniversary. Pairings and

clusters sparked dialogue between the visitor and the works

of art, questions amongst friends who visit the exhibition, and

conversations about the relationships between artists and the

art that is a testament to their time. Marking 20 Years indeed

marks a signature moment in the history of the Kemper Museum.

Summoning Ghosts: The Art of Hung Liu

10/10/14 to 1/11/15

Charlotte Crosby Kemper Gallery

The exhibition Summoning Ghosts: The Art of Hung Liu is the

first comprehensive survey of the artwork of Hung Liu—one

of the most prominent Chinese painters working in the United

States today. Featuring paintings, as well as personal ephem-

era such as photographs, sketch books, and informal painting

studies from private and public collections around the world, the

exhibition celebrates Liu’s career accomplishments and includes

work completed in China before the artist arrived in the U.S.

This American Life2/18/14 to 9/19/14, Kemper Museum This exhibition presents works from the Kemper Museum’s permanent collection that explore the social, geographic, and historical subjects connected to aspects of life in America. Depictions of the familiar, images of people, places, and things, take on larger meaning when seen in the context of the exhibition. Among the artists featured are Christopher Brown, Rackstraw Downes, Janet Fish, Elizabeth Layton, and Jamie Wyeth.

The Center is a Moving Target4/4/14 to 8/1/14, Kemper at the CrossroadsThe Center is a Moving Target highlights artists whose evolving practice and works speak to the impact and meaningful shifts in the term “regionalism” in contemporary art. The exhibition featured recent two- and three-dimensional and time-based-media works by 12 artists living and working within a 20-mile radius of Kansas City’s Crossroads District (a curator-designated region).

Barry Anderson: Pigeon4/18/14 to 2/1/15, Kemper Museum Reflecting on the poetics of place, Barry Anderson’s single-channel video installation Pigeon (2001) (7:37 minute loop) engages the viewer in both the activity and stillness of a site. In this digital film of a pigeon moving under an arch of flowing water in the Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy, Anderson focuses on the quiet mystery and humor of the everyday. Accompanied by the existing sounds present in the piazza, the video grounds us in a sense of real-time for a brief and unexpected exchange.

Jarrett Mellenbruch: Float5/16/14 to 9/1/14, Kemper Museum A site-specific installation on the grounds of the Museum by Kansas City-based artist Jarrett Mellenbruch, who is known for his interest in community engagement and interaction. This series of 8 hammocks commissioned by the Kemper Museum for the outdoor space invite the audience to take leisure time and relax on and amongst contemporary art.

Depth and Meaning: 20th Anniversary Gifts6/6/14 to 5/24/15, Kemper MuseumDepth and Meaning: 20th Anniversary Gifts presents a selection of works of art gifted to the Museum by artists and collectors, dealers, and other friends of the Museum. The works on exhibition in the Meeting Room and Sally Kemper Wood galleries have been gifted in honor of the Museum’s twenty-year milestone. Additionally, these extraordinary gifts add depth and meaning to our understanding of the styles and influences of contemporary artists whose works are already a part of the Kemper Museum Permanent Collection.

Make Your Mark9/5/14 to 8/8/15, Kemper at the CrossroadsMaking a mark can be an expression of an artist’s signature style, the literal result of the artist’s gesture interacting with the surface of a work, or more simply the manipulation of material. Make Your Mark features ten works from the Kemper Museum Permanent Collection that emphasize the individual tropes and gestures employed by a selection of artists in making their signature mark. This exhibition celebrates the distinctive marks that define the identifiable styles of these individual artists.

12

School ToursFree school tours engage students in discussions about modern and contemporary art and how it relates to their lives. More than 3,800 school children visited the Museum in 2014 for docent- led tours.

Transportation Cost Reimbursement ProgramThe Kemper Museum provides funds to cover transportation costs for Title 1 schools, primarily in the Kansas City, Missouri, Center, and Kansas City, Kansas school districts. A total of 1,829 students from 29 schools utilized the program in 2014.

ArtReachA collaboration with the Center for Child Health and Development at the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Museum offers four free ArtReach workshops each semester for children with and without developmental disabilities. During 2014, ArtReach expanded from 20 to 24 workshops allowing 60 additional children to participate. An exhibition of the children’s artwork was on display at Kemper at the Crossroads.

Camp KemperCamp Kemper is a free, 3-day spring and summer camp for chil-dren ages 6-8, and 9-12 (a spring session was added in 2015). Campers learn about the Museum’s Permanent Collection and special exhibitions while participating in gallery games, hands-on activities, and interactive discussions. Camp Kemper participants doubled in 2013 and 2014 from the level in 2012.

No Boundaries Teen Art InitiativeIn 2014, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art introduced an innovative pilot program, the No Boundaries Teen Art Initiative. This unique program selected 18 teens ages 13-15 years from a diverse range of socioeconomic circumstances and area schools (including homeschoolers) to explore their talent and passion for art at Kemper at the Crossroads. Program goals include inspiring creativity and innovation, cultivating critical thinking and problem solving, and promoting communication and collaboration. To be selected for the program, students were nominated by their art teachers, answered a short questionnaire, and submitted a sample of their art. Three artist educators mentored and guided the group for eight consecutive sessions, and culminated in a public program and exhibition at Kemper at the Crossroads. The success of the 2014 pilot program led to the program’s adoption as an annual program in 2015.

The inaugural class of teens and artist educators celebrated creativity and collaboration through the No Boundaries Teen Art Initiative.
