Kendo• Meaning: “The Way of the Sword”

• Modern Japanese martial art

• Similar to fencing

• Competition for men, women,boys, and girls

Kendo Equipment• Bogu: armor• Katana is Japanese word for sword, but kendo sword is called Shinai• Helmet is called men• Gloves called kote • Breastplate called do•Waist protected by tare• Under Bogu is a jacket, hakama,and towel wrapped around head

Kyudo• Meaning: “The Way of the Bow”

• Based on Kyujutsu (art of archery)

• Used bows in wars, now in competition

• Can be men and women

Kyudo equipment • Bow is called The Yumi (over 2 meters long) Made of bamboo, wood and leather• Arrow called Ya. Made w/ bamboo• Fletchings of Ya made of hawk or eagle feathers• Glove for arrow holding hand called Yugake(made of deerskin)
